Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Yarrow hadn't even bothered to change from her dragon bathing outfit before heading for food. She was far too hungry for that, and had made a beeline for the lower caverns once Ranemeth was sufficiently clean. Song, ever the dutiful and loyal assistant, was crooning most unhelpfully with his wicked visions of hot meatrolls and tasty porridge as the weyrling trudged stolidly toward her breakfast.

She found a rather dishearteningly large crowd gathered around the hearth when she arrived. Groaning inwardly, she took up a bowl and waited behind several other people.

What are you waiting for? Ranemeth asked, annoyed at the hunger trickling into her via their bond.

I have to wait my turn, like everyone else, the girl explained patiently, though the rationale was losing its charm with every passing second. Even the normally affable and patient Song's eyes were tingeing red.

Why should you wait behind others when your need is greater? You would not let someone bleed to death because it was not yet their turn to see a healer, would you? No, the dragon continued though Yarrow had not responded, you would not. Go on, don't hunker behind politeness.. Rather than shove her way forward as Ranemeth felt she ought, Yarrow sidled between several waiting people, Song clinging low to her neck to offer less resistance.

When she got to the front of the hearth, she saw with surprise that the wait was not for food but for the boisterous clutch of infant firelizards pushing their way toward the eager crowd. After a moment's deliberation, Yarrow snagged a left-behind bowl of enticing scraps, abandoned by the previous owner when its purpose had been served. However, she was so hungry she couldn't resist popping a sliver of mostly charred, fat-marbled scrap meat into her mouth, giving another to the eager Song before extending her thoughts and her food outward.

Rhoess beamed in success when she finally managed to reach the hearth and hold her hand out to the little blue and green that had just hatched. They were so cute! She giggled drunkenly at the hatchlings and their antics. 'Just like dragons' She noted to Fiifth, No. They're not. They're squalling little things that screech and they are completely and utterly useless! Rho chose not to comment as she cooed gently to the tiny green that hatched, only for the bright little creature to disappear into the crowd. See, they don't like you. You should leave now.

The words "Shut up." never got to reach Fiifth. A beautiful little blue had hatched at the back of the nest and was making his way in the direction of Rhoess' hand. He seemed to be distracted by the antics of his siblings and then he darted forward to gulp down the meat from Rho's fingers. The young woman gasped in surprise, her heart thudding loudly in her chest even as Fiifth's snarl echoed through her mind. "It's ok, here have some more." She soothed. The blue glared pointedly at her but the next piece of offered meat held him captivated. Rho scooped him into her shaking hands and backed away from the hearth and those that still squabbled for the attention of the hatchlings.

Put it back! Fiifth bellowed, the force of the command nearly driving the little blue away. "Shhh... You're fine little one." Rho eased the creature and continued to feed him. Rainbow hued eyes stared up at her and she felt the tentative touch of his affection.

'That's enough!' Rhoess hissed and Fiifth finally grew silent but for a low growl in her throat where she perched. 'There's no reason for you to be jealous. It's just a firelizard, a pet. I'm sure you'll like him when you meet him.'

I doubt that. The garnet pouted.

'At least give him a chance.'

No. That thing is your problem, I refuse to have anything to do with it!

'Your loss then.' Rho sneered and held her new charge up to a nearby glowbasket to get a better look at him, even as his eyes began to droop closed. "I'm going to name you Stoic. With my angry dragon you'll probably have to live up to that name." She smoothed her finger tentatively over his soft hide, marveling at the play of colors. Stoic peeped quietly at her and curled up tighter against her warm skin to fall asleep.

From amongst the scattered eggshells emerged a pale green, softer in hue than most that had been seen around the Weyr. She was small, too, a dainty thing, but the puzzling thing was the way her colorings faded into pure white on her face, on all four limbs, and at her tailtip. It was an extraordinarily unusual marking, and caught the attention of many.

While she was busy picking her way through the shells, one of the last remaining eggs hatched, spilling forth another green, bulkier than the pale one and colored pale sage green with darker sage mottlings. She might have been handsome on her own, but with all of the attention on her smaller sister, only a few spared her more than a glance.

She watched her picky sister with distaste before moving forward, stomach full of hunger and eyes whirling orange-red. She didn't care for those people, who were hoarding food to toss at the other green. She was just as good! And just as hungry. Irritably the green pounced upon a hand who offered meat out, claws scratching in as she scrabbled for the morsel.

Picky but helpful
Hana

The last two eggs hatched open, the largest revealing a dull, mustardy hide and the smaller a vivid teal green.

The bronze picked himself up and darted forward, examining himself and reveling in the attention all at once. He had faint navy markings edging his wingsails, back paws, and tailtip. And he knew he was handsome. He squawked loud, sending the pale green tumbling into the sands and the teal green squawking right back.

Well... that was new. Who knew one of them would respond? The bronze snorted. He couldn't immediately think of a response, and besides which, there were plenty of morsels being offered nearby. He darted forward and snatched one, but quickly returned to the safety of the hearth as he looked over, considering.

While he gobbled up his stolen piece of meat, the teal green used as an opportunity the opening in hands to dart forward and sieze the meat that was somehow calling to her and coaxing to her. Whoever had the meat was sending out lovely thoughts, of course. She crawled eagerly up her hand and chirped petulantly for more.

Yarrow

The bronze considered the pale green for a moment before looking back at the thinning crowd around the hearth. He needed more meat, and though the deluge of hopeful thoughts was intimidating, he couldn't ignore the hunger in his belly. He stepped off the sands again, and this time, settled on a piece of meat and stood in front of it, devouring with the ferocity of newly hatched hunger.

The pale green was finally the only one left. She picked herself up with good grace and stretched her limbs before exuberantly leaping toward the closest piece of meat. Her pale hide seemed to glow as she fastened upon the meat and devoured it. She swallowed it whole and nipped lightly at the fingers, too hungry to wait patiently for more.

Hanalei - Tag Bo'an:

Hanalei had been fully expecting to be passed over this hatching; after all, there were so many people that she could barely even see the bloody nest. But somehow, a little green found its way through to Bo'an and before she had a chance to congratulate her friend on beating his streak of exclusively male fire lizards, another much brighter green attached itself first to the meat in her hands and scrabbled frantically at her hand to reach the rest, nipping sharply at her fingers. The tiny claws weren't strong enough to do more than barely break the skin but it still stung.

"Ow! Nonono! Here! Here you go, eat this! Not my fingers!" She felt Cyprath watching through her as she began to stuff the little green. His strong curiosity pulled a smile to her face. Tas and Fred, perched on each of her knees, leaned in to investigate their new green friend, crooning softly to the baby fire lizard. "You two be nice to her, you hear? Keep her nice and safe." Fred tilted his head and trilled at her. "That's right. Safe. Guard."

She's very tiny. How big will she get?

Not nearly as large as the boys. But much bigger than she is now.

As the tiny green finally curled up to sleep in the palm of her hand, Hanalei turned to smile at her friend. "Well how about that? We both got greens! Are you happy?"

Kaz'ech:

Shardit! He was going to miss out again! Kaz danced from foot to foot, wiggling his slice of meat at the dwindling number of hatchlings. The blues and browns ignored him, two bronzes passed him over, but it was a tiny green, the most strikingly marked hatchling in the group that finally looked his way. The last hatchling left, she was probably feeling just as desperate as the greenrider. She spread her wet little wings and half flapped, half jumped her way to his hand, devouring what he had to offer and nipping at his fingers demandingly for more!

I got one! Kaz'ech crowed to his dragon. She looks kind like you! All pale and marked with white.

Trudath hummed excitedly. You would get another green. I don't suppose she'll be good for much but company then. The smaller fire lizards aren't very bright. She rolled over in the sun, flashing her white underbelly to the Weyr.

Kaz couldn't stop grinning as he fed the tiny thing, cooing nonsense to the green as he pushed his way back out of the crowd. Now that the hatching was over, people were making their way back to their tables or duties. She cheeped up at him, stomach bulging, then curled up in a tight ball and fell asleep in the palm of his hand. I'm bringing her to you, love. Then you can help me figure out a name.

D'kir

The first eggs had cracked, and the colorful babies were flapping and flailing about desperately to get food in their faces, snapping up bits of meat wherever they could. Firelizard hatchings were always so frantic, the poor things not having the innate sense of who was right for them. They must feel so alone. D'kir frowned, shoving his bit of meat farther ahead of the other reaching arms for a moment.

A handsome little brown, dark like klah, staggered forward and snatched the meat from his hand. Sniffing around for more, the hatchling flopped awkwardly up onto his hand, clinging to his wrist and weaving his head back and forth, squeaking pitifully.

"Alright, little guy, I got ya..." D'kir mused, withdrawing from the crowd with the hatchling carefully cradled against his chest lest the clumsy little thing topple off his hand onto the floor.

Wavi swooped down from the rafters, landing on the bronzerider's shoulder and making a soft peep down at his new friend, already deciding he liked him. Calen on the other hand, squawked dismissively, swooping out of the Dining Hall now that the instinctual urge to welcome hatchlings had left him.

D'kir chuckled, feeding the tiny thing some more, "What do you think we should call him, Wavi? What about... Rel. That sounds nice and sturdy." The dappled blue on his shoulder chirped in agreement and Tanohth sent amused thoughts his way.

___________________________________________________________________

Alexis

The hatching was nearly finished, her hide full of notes detailing the times between eggs cracking and individual Impressions being made. She was surprised at how tiny some of them were, her only experience having been with Fizban herself. Notes on their relative sizes filled the bottom portion of the page, and she smiled. An excellent event with many things for her to ponder over later.

Sometime during the event, she'd secured a slice of wherry from a tray a passing drudge carried, rolling it upon itself and chewing on it thoughtfully as she went over her notes.

"Hey!" Alexis grimaced as she felt tiny pinpricks of pain in her hand where it had come to rest next to her leg on the hearth. Glancing down, she saw a tiny, boldly striped blue clinging to her, taking bites out of what was left of the wherry meat.

She scowled at the hatchling. This wasn't supposed to happen, she hadn't wanted yet another baby to take care of, Lianth was quite enough as it was. But the feelings of tentative joy leaked through the new bond as the little blue cemented himself inside her mind were unmistakable. She sighed, opening her hand and allowing the little thing to gobble up the remains of the wherry meat until his tiny stomach bulged.

With the last of the eggs all cracked and the hatchlings being carried off with their new owners, Fizban hopped down off her nest and waddled over to Alexis. The white-tipped gold chirped happily, cocking her head this way and that at the little blue before squeaking in pleased tones and flapping up to Alexis's shoulder.

Hmmm another? Oh good! I like the little ones, Lianth's unshakable enthusiasm for all things was evident in his voice, and Alexis couldn't help but chuckle.

"I'll call him Rivet," she murmured, gently stroking the tiny blue neck before standing, gathering her notes, and heading back to the Weyrling Barracks to show Lianth.

Bo'an - Tag Hanalei

The lad grinned at the sight of Hanalei as she arrived, Captain immediately crawled onto Bo'an's lap before hopping up onto the lad's shoulder, remaining there for what would be the duration of the Hatching. He was glad she had come, he could do the Hatching alone of course, he had before, but having Hanalei there made it... well a bit more special. Like when Visani had been there when he had Impressed from Biscuit's Clutches, he had enjoyed that too. "Glad you could come, sorry about the delay. In such a hurry to get here I forgot to swing by and get you, knew Silence could do it though." He smiled, eyes flickering to the Blue who had settled beside Olimoth.

The Green in question slunk under Bo's chair as well as Hanalei's (she was small enough!) and nuzzled at Hanalei's hand from beneath the seat to say hello. She liked the girl, she was quietly spoken and always nice when she spoke to her and Hanalei gave the best eye scratches too. That and Hanalei made Bo'an happy - which was the main thing for the Green. Her eyes whirred as she watched the eggs Hatch, fascinated as she watched the little ones wobbling around as they found their new owners. She watched as the little Green flew in their direction (well, flew in some fashion anyway). Bo lowered his hand to the little Green, picked her up and put her on his lap, grinning as he watched Captain chirp at her, demanding her attention. The Green hissed at him and withdrew into Bo's hand further, claws digging into the lad's hand as well as the meat he was holding out to her. "Hush Captain stop scaring her!" He chided the demanding Brown, giving the Fire Lizard another piece of meat to keep him silent.

Oh! Oh she's pretty! Olimoth said softly, snaking her head around to look at the Fire Lizard. The Green looked at the Dragon with interest, stretching out her neck to touch noses. Oh what are we going to call her?
"How about Oli? After you?" The lad answered, smiling at his Dragon as he stroked her with his free hand, continuing to feed his newest little friend.
Oli? Really?
"Well? Do you like that idea?" He asked.
Oli... yes... I like that.

Bo let out a laugh as he saw Hanalei get her own Green. "Very happy. You?" He grinned. "Bet you're glad I called on you now hey?" He winked.

She had been about to snag another scrap for herself and call it quits until perhaps another clutch of flitters hatched when the little green raced up her arm, leaving the tiniest of pinpricks in her wake. Song warbled a welcome, and the small creature hissed back at him before availing herself of the meat Yarrow was stuffing into her maw.

The blue, put out by such a welcome, huffed and hunched his shoulders, turning his attention to unraveling Yarrow's braid in an effort to make himself feel better. Yarrow, smitten by the little green, tried to run a forefinger down the creature's head and back. Hissing again and flattening herself like Yarrow was pouring hot lava down her back, the firelizard managed to keep eating while making it quite plain that she did Not Want To Be Touched.

However, once she was full, she hiccuped and crawled close, seeking warmth in the crook of the young woman's body. Smiling indulgently, Yarrow tried again to touch her new acquisition, but the flit huddled away from the loving caress, sending a small shock of distaste toward the girl for her efforts. Ranemeth peered in on the goings on, giving a small chuckle of approval for the newest addition.

I would've thought you'd not like another interloper, my love, Yarrow said airily, a grin in her voice.

At least this one has a mind of her own, and isn't blithely obedient. Yes, she will be permitted to stay and learn to wash me when she is older. Ranemeth decreed with all the dignity due her eight months of life. Yarrow shook her head and, finally obtaining a tray laden with proper breakfast, made her unsteady way to the table to eat.

"Give her time, Song," she encouraged the blue, who was fretting and fretting and fretting through her hair in distressed. "Well, that'd be a good name to have her by. Thyme. Ha!" Laughing at her own cleverness, the girl tucked into her food and offered her blue a whole conciliatory meat pie as a peace offering.

She watched, fascinated, as one of the remaining eggs broke open, revealing a gorgeous little green. She thought markings like those were likely pretty rare, but her experience with firelizards was limited to only a few interactions with some particularly social ones back at the Hold – she’d been accosted in the market for a bite to eat, on a few occasions, and there’d been that day she’d been running about taking care of errands, and somebody’s blue had followed her around for hours. She’d never figured out who he’d belonged to, either. Her focus was drawn back to the clutch, then, as another green followed the first, followed again by a bronze, and then finally a third green emerged from what appeared to be the last little egg, although as short of stature as she was, she couldn’t quite be sure, despite how close she’d managed to get to the hearth.

The first two greens paired off fairly quickly, but the bronze – after snatching some food from a bystander – returned to the hearth, where he gobbled down his prize and regarded the crowd with a surprisingly critical eye. She wondered if perhaps he’d go wild, but he didn’t really appear inclined to do so. Rather, he seemed as though he was simply taking his time to decide which human he wanted, and she pondered, amused, what a newborn firelizard might have to be picky about. The morsel he’d stolen apparently wasn’t enough to satisfy him, though, and his hunger once again motivated him to move away from the hearth. This time, however, and much to Caylan’s surprise, he darted directly to her, eye on the cuttings of meat she’d forgotten she held –some thoughtful weyrperson (with more foresight than she’d had) had all but thrown them at her as she’d been making her way through the crowd. She drew in a surprised breath, though it came out more like a gasp, when the little ‘lizards teeth bit into a finger in his haste to get at the food, and hastily moved to make the meat more accessible. Still a little bit shocked, she instinctively moved to pick him up, wanting to duck out of the crowd and also to have a little more control over how much of her he could reach to bite (or claw, as the case might be); too late, it occurred to her that he might not be agreeable to that, but to her relief he reacted not at all to the change in elevation, too preoccupied with filling his belly. Well, that was a start, she supposed.

Belatedly, she realized she was sporting a full-blown grin, staring down at the little creature and admiring the splashes of blue along his wings and tail. Parceling the meat out to him bit by bit, forcing him to slow down a little (she didn’t want him choking, and with the way he’d been inhaling all the food he could get at thus far, she felt that was a valid concern), she tutted fondly at him.
“Well, now, I suppose I’ll have to come up with a name for you, won’t I?” He surprised her again by pausing in his meal to warble at her in response, although it came out a bit garbled on account of the food that was still in his mouth, and she chuckled at the sound. She took a minute to ponder what seemed like a pretty big decision – and not one she'd had any expectation of having to make today, or any other day anytime soon. She didn’t often have cause to name things, really, which didn't help matters. She sometimes named the knives she was commissioned to make, although she didn’t often share that with anyone – it just seemed right, somehow, especially with the trickier commissions that took up a lot of time and skill. But that was it! She could name him after one of her knives – in fact, the color of his hide did remind her a bit of a particular handle she’d fashioned out of bone, old enough that it’d grown fairly dark by the time she'd gotten her hands on it.
“Well maybe that’s it, then.” She adjusted her hold on the little critter, holding him closer now that he was finishing up the last of his meal. “How’d you like to be called Jarik?” He offered no protest, and so the name stuck.

Hanalei - Tag Bo:

"I'm very glad," Hana murmured, reveling in the feel of a new mind in reach of her own. It was nothing but a tiny echo of what she'd experienced with Cyprath but wonderful nonetheless. Now that she could get a proper look at the sleeping green she could make out the darker green mottlings on her spring green hide. The same color painted the edges of the underside of her wing sails, striking and beautiful. She was quite different from her bronzes, and stuck out like sore thumb next to them.

"I have no idea what I'm going to call her," the copperrider realized outloud. "I didn't expect to get her and I didn't have anything picked out ahead of time. Any suggestions?" The infant green nuzzled her thumb in her sleep and Hana nearly melted. "Jays, but she's pretty. Both of ours are."

When will you bring her back? I want to see for myself.

Soon, soon! There's no rush, Cy. She'll be with us forever.
