Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

And not a moment too soon; Gariden had barely settled into his chosen spot before the first eggs split open, spilling two greens and a blue onto the hearth. The noise level of the room nearly doubled, with folk of all sorts trying to attract a flitt and the babies themselves squalling. The wherhandler gritted his teeth and did his part; the sooner he got one over here, the sooner he could leave.

The blue firelizard seemed to notice his efforts, but veered away at the last second, choosing to beg from the weyrling woman next to him. Ah well, all was fair in firelizards and Fall. Plenty of eggs left, and more were breaking shell already. There were a brown and the darker green on the hearth still and-

Something tiny and sharp latched onto his hand. He looked down to see a bright, grassy green shoving her head between his fingers to bite at the meat he held. She wriggled about, trying to force herself inside as she squeaked imperiously.

Gariden gently grabbed hold of the green, pulling her off his hand and cradling her to his chest to keep her from springing away. Now that the hand holding the meat wasn't under seige, he brought it up to her, offering a scrap that she eagerly seized.

How interesting; he could feel her demands for more, in a weaker form of the same way Garisk communicated with him. He must have been successful then. Slowly, he backed away from the crowd to reduce the chance that some sudden movement or noise would startle her. Well, now she was his. Only time would tell how useful she would prove to be.

Gari got tinycousin! Garisk crowed, dancing in place. The bluehandler carefully made his way to his wher, and the blue shoved his snout so close that he could have inhaled the tiny green. She seemed unfazed enough; the nose was not meat and she wanted more meat. More! The wher watched the firelizard, absolutely entranced. What Gari call tinycousin?

A name. He hadn't even thought that far. Gariden considered the tiny creature stuffing herself in his hand. "Hm. How about Kelle?" Short, sweet, and easy to bark out should he need to. "Kelle," he said out loud, and the green peered up at him, attention caught by his voice. She chirruped a question. "Yes. You are Kelle."

Now to feed her into a stupor and get her back to the Hold before Garisk overturned all the tables in his excitement.

Another egg spilled out a beautiful green; dainty, with a hide color a dusty pine, and with vivid blue tones dominating, she was eye-catching, and suddenly aware of all the attention. She skittered sideways into another egg as it cracked open, and the brown within spilled out awkwardly.

The brown sprang to his feet and began barking immediately. The green shot away, diving into the shadow of the few eggs that were left.

The brown then puffed out his chest and strutted forward, or rather, away from the green and toward the food. He might want to tell her how upset he was that she ruined his hatching, but only as long as she wasn't going to tell him anything back...

Before he could get much further, though, a piece of meat dropped into his line of vision and he sprang forward eagerly, instinct kicking in and devouring the succulent morsel immediately. More where that came from? He screeched demandingly at the girl who was scrambling for more.

Rhias

A second egg split, startling the green. She squawked and backpedaled, sending a spray of sand across the hearth. There were only 5 eggs left and they were all in the process of hatching as well; cracks riddled their pale surfaces.

The new hatchling was a slightly greyish rose-brown, but when he gingerly unfurled his wings, a flash of bright, shimmering peach streaked across his sails, livening up his hide. He glanced around briefly, slightly disoriented, but then ignored the green and moved forward. He was hungry, and there was food just nearby, if his nose was anything to go by. He crept forward eagerly before fastening upon one hand and wresting the meat free from it.

The remaining eggs continued to crack menacingly. The minty green wavered for a moment; she seemed torn between hiding out, and succumbing to her hunger. Finally, though, the hunger won over. Besides, who knew what would be coming out of these eggs? She hastened her footsteps, and hurried straight toward both food and shelter. Normally she may be skittish, but there was plenty of food here. She attacked it with greedy hungry.

What started as clinical detachment bowed beneath the almost competitive atmosphere as expectant new handlers clustered before the earnestly rocking, cracking eggs. Somewhere Raisa had gotten a handful of partially crushed meatrolls, and not a crumb passed her own lips as she elbowed her way back into the thick. As the first lizard broke shell, Raisa’s eyes locked themselves onto the spindly hatchling, the rude looks of the neighbors she’d pushed past ignored in favor of twisting off a hunk of one badly squashed roll to compete with her immediate neighbor – a wherhandler, by his knots.

She wasn’t aiming for any one in particular; in fact, something in the back of her mind was screaming for the focus which was quickly bleeding away as more babies excavated themselves from the ruins of their eggs. Two greens now joined the first blue, but their company spurred the bow-legged creature forward – closer. He was creeling now, the sound of which was absorbed by the boisterous crowds, but that look, that desperation. It was so very reminiscent of a freshly hatched Khorinth that it gave the weyrling pause.

And then came the tremulous plea, threading through her confusion. It was a drop in the ocean of the bond she shared with her brown, but there it was all the same. Gathering up the squalling blue in one stiffly posed arm, Raisa shuffled back and away from the hearth front, catching Aislyn’s exuberant wave just as the realization of what she’d done hit home. Getting herself a sharding fire-lizard, right after giving one away – and getting caught red-handed by the very person she’d handed that egg off to. Aislyn was blessedly distracted by a strange woman, and was not there to witness Raisa turn a very unbecoming shade of red, her fire-lizard crying plaintively for the meat rolls being crushed in her fist while he himself was pinned to her chest.

It was quite a sight to see the numbers break shell so quickly, firelizards practically piling atop one another in tangles of limbs, wings and tails. Blues and Greens and a single Brown so far, all looking well. There was almost a surge of childish glee that rose within V’sun, echoed unabashedly by Amarth, as some eventually dove into the crowd.

It wasn’t long before one of the largest eggs split and spilled forth a pretty reddish hued Bronze. He had to say the snap he took at the dark Green was a little surprising, but no harm was really done. Well, the guy had attitude. After a scan of the crowd the newborn flitter was off and straight into his hand. Oh!

V’sun was grinning from ear to ear when the little bronze devoured his offerings in seconds flat before scratching for more. As the little creature looked ready to leave him if nothing showed up soon V’sun made haste to locate another handful of meat from those being offered around. A task rather difficult when one hand was full of flitter and the other a plate.
“Take this for me please” Quickly he handed off the item to some chap before reaching for a fistful from the bowl of scraps he spotted. The flitter gave a hatchling’s screech of impatience and V’sun shushed him with a laugh, handing the new supply of cut meat in moderation to the waiting maw. The reddish bronze firelizard had quite the strong personality.

You got one? Amarth asked giddily, having noted the brand spanking new bond that placed itself in the mindspace of his rider. At V’sun’s confirmation the Blue gave a massive roar of delight. What should we name him? What’s he like? Should it be a serious name or a personality one? This is exciting, hurry so I can meet him properly!
V’sun only gave an unmanly giggle, having pulled away from the gathering of people and happily tending to the little Bronze’s every demand for food. He placed the flitter on an empty table and sat, listing off all he could for the dragon as the new addition was fed. Amarth’s own zealous mood almost obscured the simple affection that prickled his way from the creature. It was interesting, small and just about all blind adoration, but a new link nonetheless. Now what should he name him?

He’s very red, but I think Red would be too simple. Duly noted. Suppose he couldn’t come up with anything better in that department, so how about...
“What about Hein? Short, handsome. I think I knew a guy by that name. Funny fellow, he wasn’t exactly the nicest guy around but... blah blah blah” And there went V’sun, off on a continuous ramble as the newly dubbed Hein continued his feasting, giving a gruff chirp on the matter in apparent agreement.
Welcome, Hein!

"Flattery will get you everywhere." Well, only so far really. Smirking, Aislyn returned the wink and returned her eyes to the hearth. The little ones were going so fast, the meat really did the trick if you were lucky enough at least. "Fresh meat, hm? I can see you being into something like that. Wouldn't surprise me at all." Chuckling, she shifted her gaze back to Rhias for a moment before her eyes snapped back to the little ones. "Really? This is my first fire lizard hatching here. Though now I'm glad they don't just hand out eggs to the important people. How else would I entertain myself through the day."

Two almost identical blues spilled out of their eggs and Aislyn wiggled in excitement. Since coming to Vaioa, blues have been her favorite. They were just adorable. A familiar voice drew her attention away from the little ones and blue eyes turned to see one of their candidate masters. "Really? That's a shame, I'll have to come up with a better excuse then." Smirking, she waved cheerfully to V'ash with a slightly meaty hand.

A noise from the hearth drew her back to the little ones and the two blues. It seemed that the larger and paler one had...barked at him. And then he started growling at the other two before promptly walking over and snatching at any piece of meat. That just so happened to have been dangling from Aislyn's hand. Blinking in surprise, the red-head stared for a moment before the blue began to complain, loudly, about how he was still hungry and one piece just wouldn't do. Oh, right! She quickly offered him another piece before scooping him into her arms. A blue firelizard for the former harper. Somewhat ironic but she wouldn't complain. A bite at her fingertips alerted her that the little one was done with the second piece and needed more. Now.

"Bossy, aren't you?" She smirked before looking up at Rhias and grinning. "Good luck!" With that she eased her way from the crowd, cradling the blue to her chest as she continued to ferry bits to him. He made sure to bite or growl should she dawdle too long. Ah, fresh air. Well, at least fresher than it was in that crowd. Jeez, he was such a rude guy. "Now I just need to find a name for you, hm." Was that Raisa? Ohh, she was still here. Practically skipping over to the dark-haired girl, Aislyn couldn't keep the grin off her face. "Soooo, got yourself a little one too, hm?" It was still somewhat funny that the weyrling was here, since she'd given up her egg in the first place. "What are you going to name him?"

"Way too many damn people here," Rhias complained to the redhead at her side. "It's almost impossible to see the bloody fire lizards." She should have known that a public clutch like this would attract a ridiculous crowd. There were so many people shoving meat in the poor hatchlings faces that the chances of one finding her were small. With that in mind, Rhias had no compunctions pushing through the rest of the crowd and ducking under the arm of a brownrider to dangle a slice of meat right at the edge of the nest.

"Hey!" The brownrider glared indignantly down at her.

Rhias grinned at him. "Oh, keep your pants on. I'll be outta your way just as soon as I catch myself a little minion of my own." She half expected to be shoved aside but the man merely huffed and stepped aside to watch her with his arms crossed. He was a dragonrider with a dragonrider's salary, she thought. He could buy a bloody egg.

The candidate wiggled her piece of meat, hoping to catch the attention of one of the blues wandering about, but it was a large brown that found her instead. His teeth sank into her finger when she was too slow to provide him with a second slice of meat. Rhias yelped but scooped him up and shoved a slice into his screeching jaws. He was a warm, reddish brown shade with darker points on his front feet and tail. And he was bloody loud.

"Oh shut up, you. I've got more food. See? Good stuff, right?" Stuffed to the brim with fresh meat, the brown was quite content to crawl up onto her shoulder and fall asleep. A rare, tender look swept across her features and just as rapidly disappeared as she slipped carefully out of the dining hall and away from all the commotion.

Well, Jerund felt like a fool, hunched over, dangling a bit of meat between his fingers. People pressed in around him, doing the same charades, so at least he wasn't out of place. Regardless, the minute that last shell cracked open and this hatching was over, he would be out the door. What a suffocating environment to be born into, he mused with some pity for the hatchlings.

Before he could think on it any further, a tiny brown firelizard clung to his hand and wrest the offered meat from his fingers. Jerund drew back in surprise, then steadied himself and held out another morsel to appease the brown, who had been startled by the movement. Eagerly, the creature snapped it up. While he worked on swallowing, Jerund gathered him up and withdrew from the crowd, bowl in hand.

Jerusk was right where he had left him, looking bored. He raised his ugly head at Jerund's approach, his red eyes fixating with unnerving interest on the tiny brown form in his arms. An impression of hunger and anticipation crossed over their link.

"Not for you," Jerund corrected hastily, and Jerusk's head drooped ever so slightly. "I'll get you fed next. This one wouldn't even be a mouthful for you, anyway." As Jerusk fell in behind him, Jerund peered down at the brown in his arms. He had no idea what to name him; he supposed he would figure something out.

She’d backpedaled, had made a fair bid at escaping before the red-head could track her down. And then she’d gotten distracted by the wiggling blue mass that had wriggled his way free from her vice grip. That was when Aislyn closed the distance, her upbeat hallo catching Raisa in the act of trying to herd her hissing new addition further along her shoulder, where his tiny claws couldn’t quite tear all the way through the fabric of her shirt.

Already flustered by the events that had taken place, and the concurrent waves of embarrassment and frustration with her moment of weakness, Raisa’s response was snippy and combative. “What are you doing here, you have a sharding egg already.” Pitched so as not to carry, as unlikely as that was with such a huge crowd, Raisa was cut off as someone brushed past, bumping her shoulder and eliciting a dark look from the weyrling before her laser focus was trained on the shorter Candidate again.

The little pain she’d just bonded with had since journeyed his way along both of the woman’s broader shoulders, and was mincing his way down her arm before Raisa wrangled him back onto her shoulder with a low hiss for the pain of direct claw-to-skin contact. Mollifying the similarly hissing blue fire-lizard with another chunk of meat, she channeled her annoyance into a more aggressive tack; spending any amount of prolonged time in the overtly flirtatious woman’s presence put her on edge. “What, are you trying to fill some void?"

Well, she wasn't too happy to see her, huh? Brow furrowing slightly, Aislyn tried to pinpoint what she'd done this time to cause the dark-haired woman's ire. She was pretty sure she hadn't flirted with her...nope. She hadn't even done any teasing! Though it had been on her mind. The only thing she had done was make a simple observation and then asked about a name. So she could think of a good name for her own little blue. Wrinkling her nose, the red-head glanced down at said blue just to see that he was quite finished with all that meat. Turning his head from the food, he seemed to radiate sleepiness but the presence of the other blue kept him from submitting to sleep. Couldn't seem weak in front of another. That had Aislyn chuckling to herself before smothering it. She didn't want Raisa to think she was laughing at her, that could be bad.

"Well...yes. But it hasn't hatched yet." Blue eyes blinked before settling on the increasingly frustrated woman. "And I don't think having two would be a bad thing...they are kind of adorable and all. With the right training, they'd be helpful too." Her blue shifted in her arms and she moved her grasp just slightly so he could get into a more comfortable position. Which ended up with him curled up on her shoulders, eyes trained on the pair in front of them. Well, there went a few scratches...nothing too bad since he was still a baby. Though she might have to see about getting some covering for her arms...and shoulders.

A hissing that did not come from her fire-lizard had her attention return to Raisa and her little one. Ah, did she get one as bossy as her? Arching a brow, she was about to comment on Raisa's flitter and maybe even offer congratulations. That is...until the other woman opened her sharding mouth. Aislyn couldn't hide her surprise at the words that came out. Her eyes went wide and her jaw nearly fell off. She hadn't. Surely even Raisa couldn't be so...so...so rude. Of course, her red-head temper flared and she glared. "Are you serious?" The words managed to hiss past her lips as her hands balled up into fists. Before she could even process what she was about to do, one fist flew towards Raisa's face. "You have no right to say that. It's a surprise someone like you even managed to Impress a dragon." She growled with an accompanying hiss from her blue.

How dare she. How dare she! Who did she think she was, just because she managed to get a sharding dragon and Aislyn was left. It didn't mean anything! And that poor brown having to put up with the likes of Raisa, how did he manage that?

In hindsight, there were signals to clue the weyrling in, but Raisa obstinately ignored them to fan the flames of her own agitation. And so when the smaller Candidate cocked a fist and swung at her, she had only enough time for a hitched breath before impact. Her head rocked back as it absorbed the force, a solid hit right to the jaw – she stumbled a half-step back, with her fire-lizard screaming bloody murder in her ear, a wildly flapping wing cuffing the woman in the face as the blue felt the aftershock. It was a sharding miracle that the thing hadn’t flown the coop right then and there, instead sticking around to squawk and kick up a fuss.

Raisa herself was stunned into silence, eyes bulging and the whites clearly visible as one hand shakily rose to wipe at her freshly busted lip, her fingers coming away flecked with blood even while she continued to stare blankly at Aislyn, eyebrows knitted over her dark eyes as if she was having trouble processing what had just happened. Khorinth stirred sluggishly on the opposite end of their bond, his sleepy inquiry shot through with mounting concern as his rider’s turmoil and stinging pain made their way to him, safely bundled away in the Weyrling Barracks.

Raisa, what happened? Why do you hurt?

It was that, that and a combination of Aislyn’s accompanying snarl that shocked the weyrling out of her stunned silence. And then that stunned passiveness caught fire, bristling outrage drawing the woman to her full, imposing size. “Well maybe you just proved my point, you crazy Bitran!” How dare she accuse her of treating Khorinth ill!

Any concern for the sort of negative attention they might have drawn was handily tossed out the window now. With screaming fire-lizards and similarly screaming handlers, there was no point.
