Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Kaz'ech and T'ech:

"Just for the afternoon."

"No."

"You can bring J'ean!"

T'ech's eye narrowed dangerously at his brother as they made their way into the dining hall. The fact that he had to look up at the younger man never failed to annoy him. Kaz'ech squirmed, grinned at him with startlingly white teeth, and gave him a thumbs up. The bronzerider sighed. "I'm not going back to Fort if I can help it. I don't care if you have friends there. Me and J'ean left for a reason."

The greenrider's face settled into a pout of epic proportions. Despite everything J'ean had told him about T'ech and Fort Weyr, he hadn't thought his brother actually hated the place. All his plans for the afternoon were ruined now. "Being a Weyrleader made you no fun. You're like a constant buzz kill."

T'ech opened his mouth to argue, or to tell Kaz to go away, but Fardles was suddenly stiff on his shoulder, humming along softly to the commotion in the dining hall. Samus appeared beside him and joined in, keeping a respectable distance from the hearth. When the bronzerider realized what was happening, he spun on his heel and walked right back out. "Sorry, I have to go."

"T'ech! Hey come on! You're gonna miss the hatching!"

"Don't care." The last thing he needed was another bloody fire lizard.

Kaz'ech made a rude gesture at his brother's retreating back and then pushed his way through the crowd towards the nest. Fire lizard hatchings were generally rare. Most people with golden lizards sold or bartered off the eggs. Sometimes they were confiscated by Weyr leadership to be gifted to high ranking holders and crafters as gestures of good will. At Vaioa, the miners had hogged the majority of lizards until queens had started cropping up in abundance. His eyes fixed greedily on rocking egg. Perhaps he would get lucky this time; no one seemed to be claiming the eggs...

An egg hatched open at the back of the clutch, revealing a steely-hued blue who moved forward with alacrity. He had a pretty greeny-cerulean shade on his underbelly and wingsails, setting off the steel of his hide. The green and brown were still untangling, and he stopped to watch for a moment, briefly distracted by their squabble.

The green had been in the middle of squabbling with her sister when the darker brown hatched quite on top of her. She had hence untangled herself and abandoned all attempts to move anywhere; rather, she was attempting to curl up in her shell again, frantically pulling its remains around her as though hoping to escape back into her egg.

The blue seemed to sigh in frustration and turned away. He didn't have time for such stupid nonsense; he was too hungry. He turned his back on his brown brother and darted forward, picking the closest morsel of meat and devouring it.

The brown gave the green a quizzical croon and when he received no response, turned away with an irate twitch of his tail. Two blues were bursting from their shells not far off, and he had the impression that he would have to act now if he wanted his food, before they broke free and beat him to it. He stepped forward cautiously, and squawked in surprise as a hand descended right before him. Well, that was easy! He gobbled the meat up greedily.

How far away are they?!
Bo'an and Olimoth

There are more little ones Hatching? Olimoth asked Bo'an softly as she trotted along beside him with her new companions - oddly enough Irit had become fond of the Green Dragon and as such had made her his official post along with Silence (ultimately freeing up Bo's shoulder and head for Captain and any other new comers the lad might acquire along the way). The Green had been rather distressed at this - Irit spent an inordinate amount of time screaming at Shiver and Captain who both screamed back, sending Olimoth shivering by her Rider. But it seemed the youngest Blue was content to remain quiet so long as Olimoth let him use her for a ride.
"There are yes. Do you mind me trying for another one?" Bo'an asked his beautiful little Green; eyes flickering to her swiftly. If she did not wish for him to have another then he would not even try - after all he did not wish to upset his beloved Dragon, he would never do that to her.
No! I think more friends would be good. Just as long as they like me. Olimoth added, turning her head briefly to look at her two friends and huffing softly at them both.
"Sweet one I doubt anyone could ever dislike you." He chuckled, leaning down to stroke her head lovingly.

Entering the Lower Caverns he grinned at the sight of all the others who had come. Suddenly a pang of guilt hit him - he had forgotten to find Hanalei! He had promised the girl that he would find her before the next Hatching so that they could go together... and he had forgotten. "Silence, go find Hanalei!" He said swiftly to his companion and watched as the Blue nodded and took off from Olimoth to find the Copper Weyrling.

Settling in a seat he saved one for Hanalei (by putting Captain on the seat next to him, no way anyone would mess with the Brown) and got himself some meat. Giving some to Irit, Shiver, Captain and of course Olimoth he held another piece towards the eggs and watched as they Hatched, he had forgotten how exciting all of this was. Olimoth sat beside him, her tail wrapped around his ankle, watching intently.

Rhias - Tag Aislyn:

Rhias flashed the familiar red head a grin and a lascivious wink, bumping back against her with a hip. "Hellooo beautiful."

She didn't dare look away from the hearth for too long; two blues, a green, and a brown had already Impressed and the remaining green was probably seconds away from either attaching herself to someone, or going wild. The candidate wiggled a piece of meat enticingly at her.

"Nah, I'm here for the fresh meat," she quipped. The green wasn't even looking her way, sharddit. "There weren't many hatchings back at Igen. The only way you could get a fire lizard there was to buy an egg off of someone with a green and hope it wasn't a dud. All the gold eggs got passed out to more important people than candidates. I'd be happy with anything."

She smiled in fond remembrance of the candidate master that had saved her ass from simply losing candidacy. "Someone got me an egg once. Took care of it for weeks and weeks until I realized that it wasn't going to hatch. Green eggs usually don't."

Hanalei - Tag Bo'an and slight Alexis:

Hanalei was in the middle of writing a rather long-winded letter to her parents when the little blue appeared on her desk. Fred perked up instantly, chirping to his friend, while Tas retreated to her shoulder and watched him suspiciously. The copperrider smiled, set her pen down, and offered a hand to the little blue, coaxing him up onto it and trying to make sense of the message he'd been sent with for her.

He wants you to go to the kitchens, Cyprath supplied sleepily. The dozing copper didn't even bother to open his eyes. Something about a hatching. On any normal occasion, the young dragon would have loved to attend such an event, but he had a full belly and moving was near impossible at the moment. Go on without me, I'll watch through you.

Hana needed no further urging. She sprang up with an enthusiasm that had Tas digging his claws into her shoulder and squawking in protest. Fred flew after her as she practically ran to the kitchens. She arrived to find quite the crowd - jays she was never going to get through that - and Bo'an saving her a seat.

She should have thought to check with Alexis to see when Fizban's eggs were due to hatch but Cyprath's upkeep had swept the thought right from her mind. Hana waved at Alexis, grabbed a bowl of meat and flashed the Bo'an a wide grin. "Hey you! Thanks for the heads up! Hello Olimoth!"

V'ash slight tag: Rhias and Aislyn

Finally the bandages were gone. Done away with thrown to the fire. Healer said not to climb for a while, or vault around like V’ash had been practicing, but a healer couldn’t watch all the time could he? Just finished with his meal the bluerider took a redfruit to go. Mouth full and juice running down his chin the sprightly candidate master headed towards the exit when an odd noise caught his attention. Chewing slowly he turned watching with curiosity as a crowd began to gather. Eyes lighting up as Pip and Dim flashed from between above his head. His two greens trilled happily dashing and twirling as they joined the humming of the other firelizards. Swallowing with a grin V’ash turned right back into the dining hall. Oh? Another small one then? Cedith perked up at the curious thoughts running through his rider’s head.

V’ash shrugged still slowly eating the redfruit. We’ll see, Pip and Dim would love more company. Cedith hummed in glee Yes and they are quite helpful at bathing. V’ash chuckled at that redfruit all but gone now. The two greens had become quite good at scrubbing Cedith. Funnily enough they seemed entranced by the bubbles always getting confused and trying to scrub them off. Wiping his hands clean the bluerider found himself some of the little scraps for the hatchlings.

Within the bustling group he suddenly spotted two of his candidates. Oh so this is where they could be found when chores were said and done. Good a firelizard would be excellent company especially if they didn’t happen to impress. V’ash couldn’t remember a time without his own little Pip. Dimglow had been a recent and quite pleasant addition, but life without one of these fun little creatures? Dull indeed. Grinning he gave a sharp call to Rhias and Aislyn. “Just so you know, new firelizards are no excuse for missing chores.” With a side smile and a wink to the candidates he let them know his words were in fun. Of course none of them would want to miss chores!

Then the bluerider hovered on the edges of the group. If a firelizard happened his way he would greet the creature but he saw no need to muscle his way to the center. Best let these strong personalities get what they wanted, a new friend would find him or not. Above his head Pip and Dim resumed their humming as the first few eggs began to crack and the first hatchlings appeared. Always a good day when new little ones joined the world.

The first blue, an intense blue shade with slightly dusty undertones, moved forward. He could immediately smell the fresh meat and moved forward toward the hands cautiously, but his blue brother barked at him and he skittered back, alarmed.

The other blue was nearly identical in shade, but paler and softer. He was also larger. He growled at the blue and at the green who was still hiding in her shells, creeling softly, before marching forth and snatching a piece of meat huffily. He was hungry and those idiots weren't getting in his way!

Quarrelsome and domineering
Aislyn

The other blue chirped uncertainly and glanced over at the green, who paid him no mind. Indeed, she hardly noticed much, as she was still attempting to burrow into the sand. The blue hesitated. He seemed uncertain of her sanity. Wasn't she hungry? But then decided he had more important things to worry about. He edged forward, skirting most of the hands, until he was a safe distance from the hearth. Only then did he select a morsel and fasten his little jaws upon it.

Timid and indecisive
K'mor

Immediately, the largest lizard of the clutch yet broke shell. The hearth was a haphazard mess of cracking shells and fragments of already broken eggs. The newly hatched lizard uncurled from his egg and flexed his wings. He was much redder than any bronze in the Weyr, with a definite bronze-gold sheen to cover his entire hide.

He strode forward proudly before noticing the green who was still busy burying himself in sand. He too paused in concern, then hissed and sprang forward. She yelped and dislodged herself, skirting his fangs and shooting into the crowd. Finally, she acknowledged her hunger, and leapt upon a hand, wresting free the piece of meat from within.

Avoidant and unselfconfident
Bo'an

The bronze surveyed the cracking eggs with moderate satisfaction before strutting forward proudly. Food and thoughts pushed at him, and he vaguely ignored some of them, searching around for the primest, juiciest piece of meat. THere! He surged forward, grabbed the morsel, and swallowed it whole before scratching at the hand. More food, and faster! He whipped around quickly as though searching for more.

It wasn't often that Jerund stopped by the Weyr; he usually had no reason to. However, he had heard that a firelizard clutch hardened by the hearth in the lower caverns and, finding the rumor to be true, decided to check in on it every now and again after his day patrols. Firelizards had their charm, but Jerund's interest in them was professional. One would be useful as both a scout and a messenger on patrols.

With a short day patrol behind them, Jerund directed Jerusk to the lower caverns. It would just be a quick stop, like the others. The likelihood of actually catching the clutch while it was hatching was small, but there was no harm in checking. Jerund trotted down the hallway, Jerusk plodding dutifully after him, and stopped short a few paces from the Dining Hall, hearing a commotion. Was it usually this busy?

Shards, was he really that lucky?

"Best stay out here," Jerund said to his wher, glancing in at the growing crowd. Jerusk huffed, settling to the floor at the side of the hall. "I'll be right back." He hurried into the room, silently hoping Jerusk didn't inadvertently give some unwitting passerby a heart attack.

Accepting a proffered bowl of scraps, Jerund hovered near the edge of the crowd and peered through the bodies. With so many people gathered around the clutch, it was unlikely he would walk away with a firelizard. But again, no harm in trying.

Archives Assistant Dofon

With slate in hand, the scrawny mute boy that worked with the Harpers, Archivists, and sometimes Queenriders and Headwomen was finally heading to eat. He had been doing quite a bit of hide-copying this day and he eventually had to be yanked from his chair by one of his superiors since he had become so engrossed in his work that he hadn't realized just how loud his stomach was growling. "It's distracting us! You need to eat, lad!" The man had advised without any lack of mirth in his voice. So thus, Dofon had just grabbed two meatrolls, and had quickly devoured all but a half of one when he decided to return to the archives. With the remaining chunk of meat in his hand, he noticed a crowd of observers standing in the dining hall.

Dofon was naturally curious, and his eyes widened when he closed in and saw tiny baby firelizards hatching! Although the mute kid was usually calm, he found himself bouncing up and down a couple of times before attempting to squeeze through the crowd, dropping his slate in the process. Oh well, he could go back for that later, as the chance at getting a firelizard - a loyal companion like he'd never had before - was just far too tempting to miss!

The past few days had gone by much more quickly than she was accustomed to; Caylan, who not a week ago had been living the life of a journeyman metalsmith back at the hold, now found herself walking the halls of the Weyr as a Candidate, and she was still working on settling in to the new rhythm. Having spent most of her twenty turns back at the Hold, it had been ever so slightly disconcerting, living in a place that she didn’t know like the back of her hand. It had served as a pretty compelling motivator, in fact, and as a result, whenever she had a spare moment between chores, she’d taken to exploring. Quietly, unobtrusively, she’d been diligently mapping the place out at every opportunity, committing to memory as much of the Weyr as she had access to. And she finally felt she was making progress - in small increments, but progress nonetheless. She had her own little set of rules that she lived by, that she adhered to very strictly, and one of those was that you never let yourself be lost. You learned the layout, always, and you committed it to memory - not just for the sake of convenience, but also in case of emergency. Having therefore spent the past several hours on the move, she’d managed to work up quite an appetite – but that was no problem, the dining hall was one place she could now find without any difficulty at all. The food here was pretty sharding good, she’d give it that.

However, having set her sights on a meal, she was dismayed to find the place even more crowded than usual. But as she drew nearer, she realized that the rhythm of the crowd was off – something was going on, these people clearly weren’t here to eat. Well, not all of them, anyway. The place was practically buzzing with poorly contained excitement. Though being short of stature was rarely something she considered an asset, she had no qualms about using it to her advantage in a situation like this one – curiosity piqued, she slipped and ducked and finagled her way through the mob of weyrfolk with relative ease, skirting the edges but slowly working her way towards the center. As she came closer, it soon became apparent what the fuss was all about – there were little baby firelizards about!

She could certainly understand the excitement, now - ‘lizard clutches came through the Hold now and then, but they were rarely as large as this one seemed to be, and more often than not the eggs got sold away individually to anyone well-off enough to afford them. She’d never been witness to a mass hatching like this one. It would have to be a pretty fascinating thing to see, wouldn’t it? With that in mind, she resolved to stick around for a while, and continued working her way closer. Off to one side, but close enough now to have a clear view of the clutch, her expression relaxed into a soft smile as she took in the scene. Quite a few of the little creatures had already broken free of their shells and had apparently Impressed to some of the bystanders, seemingly at random. There seemed to be no formal claim on the eggs, then, from what she could tell, and she was quite interested in seeing the process by which a newly hatched firelizard selected a human from a crowd - or opted not to, as the case might be. Folding her hands behind her back, she settled in on the outskirts of the crowd, rocked back on her heels, and kept quiet; though she seemed just as at-ease and composed as she'd been when she’d arrived, she was in reality rather excited to see how this thing would progress, and it showed in brightness of her eyes.

Weyrling
K'mor tried to pull the bowl away from the blue that moved towards him, but was too slow. The little thing got the meat in his mouth before K'mor could react. With a piece of meat hanging in it's jaws the little hatchling toppled backwards and rolled head over tail. It ate that one piece and then looked up at K'mor with sad eyes, why did the one with food move away? The little blue got back up on his feet an cried for more, he was still hungry and this person would feed him, right?

K'mor sighed, it would be his luck to get one of the small ones. He knew that these things could be trained and useful, but he also knew the smaller they were the dimmer they were. This blue was on the small side and seemed to not be all that bright, but now he was stuck with it. He knew enough of the things to know how dependent they were, he would have to take care of it. He picked up the blue with one hand and moved over to an empty table.

He plopped the firelizard on the table and started to hand feed it, as he tapped his foot. "You need a name." Just as he wondered what to name the little blue, Rileth decided to jump in. Can I name him? K'mor was not sure how that would be a good idea, but he was drawing blanks. Sure, what did you have in mind?

Sky?
No
Blue?
No
Little Blue?
No
Sky.
Fine.

Sky it would be, not the best name, but it was something. It was better then being called Nameless or Blue.
