Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Made some shinies, did good?; Gold Fizban's first clutch - 16 eggs

Alexis had been marking Fizban's progress as her eggs grew in her belly with attentive eagerness. She'd never had the opportunity to observe the reproductive cycle of a firelizard before, and Fizban was amenable enough to all the attention and poking about her tummy, as long as it was gentle. The weyrling kept a log on a sheet of hide, marking the gold's belly growth for each day. Lianth too had been deeply interested, his young mind not sure what to make of it all but still picking up on his rider's fascination with the process.

That particular evening, with Fizban's belly swollen, Alexis could swear she saw the individual lumps and outlines of the eggs. She chuckled and stroked her gold's side fondly, but for once the flitter squealed and wriggled from her grasp, anxiety and need leaking through their bond.

"Are you alright, Fizban? What do you need?" setting down her writing tools, Alexis stood from her chair and watched the gold laboriously flap up into the air.

"Lianth?"

She says she is very full and it is time, the copper yawned from Alexis's bed, having claimed it for an evening nap, then rolled onto his side and closed his eyes. I will tell her to wake me when she is done, now come and oil my belly, it's itchy!

She watched as Fizban gave her a bit of a scolding chirp, then lumbered through the air out of the barracks to find a suitable place to clutch. Shaking her head, she made a few notes on her hide, then moved to Lianth to tend to a flaking patch of hide.

A short time later, Lianth woke from his nap with a soft warble, She says she has finished, and she wants you to come see! The green-speckled copper hopped down off the bed, stretched, and trotted alongside Alexis as she picked up her writing things and hurried toward the Lower Caverns.

Fizban had made a nest of discarded scraps of linen, kitchen towels, and what looked to be straw and hay from the herdbeast pens, all wound up into a large pile on the hearth next to one of the cooking fires. Atop the pile, Fizban sprawled, her wings draping over the nest protectively as she hissed at the kitchen workers whenever they passed. As soon as the little gold saw her owner however, she perked up and began to warble and trill excitedly, fluttering her wings so much that Alexis had to physically move her aside to see the eggs.

There were 16 of them, all creamy white and varying sizes, though there was no golden shell amongst them. Alexis took a few notes after measuring some of them with her finger for reference, then set Fizban back atop of them.

"You did very well, Fizban," she smiled, stroking the gold's head gently.

_________________________________________________________________

Two sevendays later, Alexis had become accustomed to Fizban's absence from her shoulder as the gold had been brooding over her eggs. The kitchen workers had quickly lost their menace in Fizban's eyes, and the little gold even let them come close enough to see the eggs once in a while, provided they "ooh" and "ahh" over them appropriately.

One day, Alexis had just finished feeding Lianth and oiling him for the afternoon, when she got an urgent feeling from Fizban. Something like a begging, with the impression of 'quick!' in there as well. The eggs must be hatching!

Lianth waddled alongside her again, as ever enthusiastic to see what his little gold friend was up to. Fizban perched on her haphazard nest, her throat vibrating with a welcoming song as the tiny eggs twitched and jerked about. The kitchen workers scurried about, moving a few tables aside to make way for the weyrfolk who would undoubtedly begin arriving and crowding around the nest, all hopeful to attract one of the hatchlings. Alexis sat to one side, Lianth leaning sleepily against her legs, and took notes marking down times between eggs cracking.

Having set out with every intention of grabbing a quick bite to go, Raisa was understandably dismayed to find the hearth teeming with a mixed crowd. The timbre of their collective voices rose over the general din of the Kitchens, prompting the brown weyrling to investigate despite better judgment. The sight that met her eyes was disappointment and unpleasant reminder both – fire-lizard eggs, an entire clutch’s worth by the looks of their closely packed ranks. Well, that and the delighted little gold presiding over them. She’d just foisted the sharding egg her brother had misguidedly tried to buy her affections with off on someone else, and here was an entirely new crop to rub it in.

Fardling Sankal, he’d had any number of sites to study at, and he chose this one. There was no way she could have kept that egg and her own pride at the same time, and she didn’t even like the things, anyways! Khorinth had some weirdly vested interest in the tiny menaces, and she’d been unhappy just to see her brown upset at losing the egg. It was better off in that candidate’s hands, someone who didn’t have such heavy obligations and could afford to spoil the thing rotten – better yet, someone who knew how to care for the egg before that time came.

Still hovering at the fringes of the crowd, Raisa seemed hesitant to shrug the whole affair off as she’d first been inclined to. She recognized that woman, and her copper, both faces she’d seen at lessons. Her name escaped the brown weyrling, but she had her nose buried in what looked to be notes anyways – maybe she could ask a few questions of her after this thing was done. Had to be her gold fire-lizard, right? As more bodies began to crowd in closer towards the hearth, Raisa allowed herself to be shuffled off to the side, at a far enough angle that she wasn’t bumping elbows with the more determined set of would-be fire-lizard owners.

Tanohth settled down on a sun-baked ridge overlooking the Lower Caverns entrance, his muscles tired from flight drills and welcoming the late fall sun. He spread his wings to catch every last ray, sending a satisfied thread of love and affection to D'kir as his rider entered the kitchens to fetch himself some lunch.

D'kir blinked, his eyes adjusting to the darker lighting inside, and furrowed his eyebrows in surprise. He hadn't quite expected to see such a crowd here for the mid-day meal. Odd. Things became less odd, however, when Calen and Wavi swooped inside after him, their little throats vibrating with the unmistakable hum that meant that eggs were hatching. The bronze and blue settled down onto the rafters over the hearth, Calen snapping at Wavi to give him more room while the blue focused all his attention on the event unfolding beneath them.

What d'you think big guy, should I try to get another one? D'kir smiled to himself as he sidled over to grab a couple of meat rolls to munch on.

By all means, they're very useful at bathtime, they get the spots that you miss, the bronze's voice rippled with amusement and D'kir chuckled.

Yeah well, if you didn't get so sharding big it wouldn't be such a problem!

On that, he used his small stature to wiggle through the crowd toward the front, slinking in between a pair of greenriders who were chattering excitedly to each other and finding a good spot to view the clutch from, meatrolls at the ready.

V’sun had been taking an early lunch, hunkered down on a table and stuffing his face before the numbers grew larger of those with the same plan in mind. His reason was that he planned to give Amarth an absolute spoiling in the next bath, which they’d decided to be around lunch time today. Might as well spend the hours on it and burn off what he ate now for another feast come dinner. The Blue could muck about in the dirt and dust all he wanted beforehand, in fact, V’sun had encouraged the dragon to get extra dirty so they could spend more time on being thorough. Call him odd for making more work, but this man just loved spending any sort of time fussing over Amarth.

So when the lunchtime rush pushed on and he was still mauling his selection, V’sun perked up to the sudden increase of babbling noise. It wasn’t the gradual rise like he expected, more like an explosion of sudden excitement really. Thus so of course it caught the Bluerider’s attention. Intrigued to see what was the call for all the fuss V’sun jumped to his feet, plate still in hand an eating on the move, and followed the flow.

He worked his way in, curiosity at its peak, until he came to the sight that spoke it all. Ah, flitter hatching. Maybe he should stick around, he missed the last one!
Firelizards? Amarth suddenly perked up, no longer so focused on gleefully rolling in dirt, Oh! Get one, can you get one? That’d be just the best, you said you wanted one!
V’sun cracked a grin, fingering a half-eaten meatroll into his maw. ‘Sure thing, we’ll see what happens.’

Suppose he should save those other two on his plate, then.

Rho didn't really spend all that much time in the lower caverns. It was usually in, get food/drink and be off again. These Vaioa folk were a bit more than she was used to. Their enthusiasm for life caught her off guard, though if she had been paying proper attention she might have been able to account it to the cooler temperatures. So far as she knew, it was because with the onset of winter they would all get a break from flying thread. She would just have to wait and see how Fiifth would take the downtime. The Garnet had settled into her new home with relatively little trouble. She still thought she owned as far as the eye could see but other than a squabble with the largest dragon in the weyr, things had been going great.

Well, at least that's what Rho had thought when she'd gone to bed the previous evening.

WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU'RE SO SPECIAL OCETH? Were the words that Rho had awoken to. Fiifth had seen fit to once again antagonize the now egg heavy queen, YOU'LL SHAFFIT OUT EGGS AND BE STUCK WATCHING THEM LIKE SOME GUARD CANINE! Fiifth's cackling laughter had echoed through Rho's mind, jolting her out of bed to the clamor of Oceth's resounding bellow.

It had taken a candlemark for Fiifth to tire of Rho's screeching, another candlemark for the woman to explain and apologize to Atlen and also get a promise from her Garnet that it wouldn't happen again (at least until Oceth's eggs hatched). As soon as Atlen had left, Rhoess had given up and gone to get a pint of ale. It had been early then but now late afternoon was upon her and a blush was spread out across Rho's face even as she meandered to get another drink.

Rhoess, that is enough! Fiifth growled, 'Calm your pinions, not hurting anything dearie.' Rho giggled and took a long draught from her refilled mug. I don't want to hear you complaining because you feel like shaffit tomorrow.

Rhoess ignored her in favor of the commotion that was gathering near one of the hearths. Excited chattering of weyrfolk clued her in to a clutch of firelizard eggs that were just about to hatch. No. Don't you dare. Fiifth hissed, You do NOT need one of those things!

Rho only chuckled at her and swayed her way over to pick up a bowl of scraps and shoulder through the crowd to get close. She'd never had the chance to impress a firelizard but Vaioa seemed to be overflowing with them and her addled brain thought it could indeed be a wonderful idea to try her luck. 'Don't worry Fifi, just going to try and get you a friend~' I don't need a friend! 'Too bad!' Rho grinned and pushed her way none too gently towards the little nest and the rocking eggs.

Gariden sipped at his mug of cider, content to lean against the wall and watch all the commotion. Klah would have been welcome as the temperatures drifted towards winter cool, but the bluehandler actually planned on sleeping before sundown. It was the middle of his "night" as it was, but the riders kept a diurnal schedule, and it was a rider he had been on an errand to see. Garisk certainly wasn't having any trouble dozing out in the little room devoted to the Night Hearth, so Gariden saw no trouble with stopping for a quick bite before they returned to the Hold to sleep.

The Dining Hall hadn't been empty before, but suddenly there were people pouring through every entrance. Sometimes he forgot how many people the Weyr and Hold housed, since most of them slept through the time he was awake. It was too early for the dinner rush, and they all seemed drawn to one corner in particular rather than collecting food and dispersing among the tables. Intrigued, the bluehander slipped closer.

What what dis? Much noise, much people.

Gariden hissed through his teeth. "Garisk! Hold!" He turned to see his wher freeze in place, blocking one of the entrances to the Hall. The blue send a hurt question across their link, and the man sighed. "Many people. Little space. You might scare them."

The blue hhrrrred, but he could see the sense in his handler's thoughts. Garisk slid through the opening to press against the wall, not attempting to fight through to Gariden. Tiny cousins come! All chatter, new eggs!

Eggs, hm? That would mean a firelizard hatching then; no wonder folks were so eager. The Weyr had a positively embarrassing amount compared to the average Hold, but firelizards were still uncommon enough that most folk who wanted one didn't have one yet. Well, he had no desire to muscle in to claim one for himself. Let them squabble and strain trying to coax one their way.

Garisk wants! The blue had been snooping on his thoughts, and abruptly gave his opinion on the matter. Like tiny cousins! Help scratches, help find things, warm when sleep.

Gariden winced. He still sometimes debated the wisdom of letting Garisk into his life - not that he regretted it, but the blue could be troublesome to handle. He wasn't sure enough in it that he was willing to risk a distraction.

Please? Garisk be good! Garisk be so good! The wher crept forward again, still hugging the wall. He was close enough now that Gariden could see his eyes whirling anxious yellow-green through the tinted goggles.

The handler's gut instinct was still to say no, but he hesitated. The promise to be good was a rare enough thing that it might be worth it, especially if the one he attracted was biddable. It could be a win on both sides of the table. His brow furrowed in thought, and a slow moment later, he nodded to himself. This was worth the effort and risk.

Yes! Good Garisk, love Gari.

"I'll try, at least. Stay there, I'll bring any I get over to you if they come." Without an uttered word, the wherhandler approached the hearth, collecting a bowl of meat and sliding in beside a well-built woman with weyrling knots. Now to wait for the shells to crack.

K'mor was not is the best of moods, even since he had mentioned that there was a gold firelizard that had laid some, he had been plagued by his dragon. Rileth, being the loveable creature that he was loved firelizards and had always asked for his rider to get one. Over and over K'mor had refused, saying that they were too busy and did not need another mouth to worry about. This was when Rileth learned from other dragons how fun and helpful the little ones were.

With the thought of firelizards fresh in his mind K'mor was trapped with his bronze remembering that he wanted one. Today he had given in, he could only say no to his dragon so many times. K'mor himself did not want a firelizard, he had a canine, that was a good enough pet, but he loved his dragon and wanted to beast to be happy. K'mor made sure to come by early, even playing nice as he asked around to get an idea of when the eggs would hatch. When he was told that today might be the day, he was met with the voice of a very excited bronze.

Does that mean we can have one today? A little one of our own, I really would like to have one. A little cousin of my own. K'mor was trying his best to understand how the firelizard would be Rileth's? They bonded to people not dragons. K'mor would not correct his dragon, if the bronze wanted a pet that was fine with him. The less caring he'd have to do for the creature the better, though, if it was a smart one if might just make itself useful.

I will take good care of the little one, maybe you could get more them one, so it will have a friend. K'mor paused in his thoughts and signed. One or none.

One it is.

With that K'mor moved closer to where the crowd was gathering. The eggs were already shaking and he grabbed a bowl of meat from one of the kitchen workers. He wanted a smart lizard, if they were hungry enough it would come to him. He grabbed a piece of meat and held it in his palm, open handed and a bit away from the nest. He knew he couldn't be strongly picky, but he would try.

A blue and two greens were the first to hatch. The other eggs were all cracking and rocking violently, but the three were first to break shell. The two greens hatched at precisely the right time and as they landed from the contents of their shell, their long and ungainly limbs and tails immediately tangled. The blue, who had been only a few eggs away, observed the two and skittered out immediately.

His hide was a brilliant midsummer sky tone, and it darkened along his wings and head. He seemed to be average sized for a blue, although small as a hatchling. He smelled the fresh meat and creeled loudly. He felt only one emotion, hunger, and had the sense that wherever the smell was emanating from would be good to satisfy the ache. He darted forward, knocking against a hand here and some fingers there, before his jaws fastened upon a morsel being offered. He swallowed it greedily and chirped insistently for more.

Meanwhile, the two greens had finally broken apart, both snarling and hissing. Before the fight could escalate much further, though, a nearby egg hatched and disgorged a brown, who immediately toppled into the darker of the two.

The brighter one saw the opportunity and turned, vanishing into the hands reaching out. There had only been time for everyone to see a brief flash of yellow-green hide before she was gone. However, she hadn't vanished, simply put a safe distance between herself and the other green before she paused to smell for food. She immediately turned to the nearest morsel and pounced, sending demanding thoughts of hunger to it's owner.

Rhias:

The few weeks she had spent at Vaioa had been interesting to say the least. Rhias had found that not only were people at the desert Weyr not the hide-bound losers she'd expected, but they lacked the stick up the arse that everyone at Igen had.

A whole new Weyr to explore, free of reputation - but for her outbursts in candidate lessons - she could go anywhere, do anything, talk to anyone, and no one would look at her like she was a three-headed wherry.

So when she bounced into the dining hall and pushed her way through the crowd to get a better look at all the commotion, no one shoved her away. A wide smirk spread across her face. There were already two greens a blue hatched but loads of eggs left. Never once at Igen had she had the opportunity to procure one of the little creatures but Vaioa had so many sharding queens that chances like this would be frequent now.

But why wait?

"I'll be taking this, thanks," Rhias said as she swiped a handful of meat out of the nearest offered bowl and waved it towards the hatching eggs. A little partner would be nice, not quite as nice as a dragon, but fine company nonetheless.

The rumors had been that a fire lizard hatching would be happening soon and sure enough, as soon as Aislyn arrived there was already a crowd. Cursing to herself, she slipped through to get a better look and wasn't surprise to find three had already hatched. A blue and two greens, very nice. Ohh...it looked like Raisa managed to get the blue; a wave followed by a grin were quickly thrown in the weyrling's direction. Then her attention shifted to why she'd come down in the first place. Eggs filled with babbiieess! Watching the two greens finish their fight she tried to not laugh as a brown broke from it's shell and promptly fell onto the darker of the greens. Which left enough time for the other green to rush to a person before the fighting began again. After the hatching, she'd been...well, a bit depressed. Babies seemed to be a good way to cheer herself up.

"Oh..wow..." The girl mumbled, sliding closer to the hearth to get a better look. The red-head had to keep herself from squealing in delight. She would have to make sure to come to every fire-lizard clutch she could, they were all just so adorable! Hmm, maybe she should get one. Wasn't like she had a baby dragon to take care of...and Rykka said it was good idea. It apparently helped prepare for a dragon and that was tempting enough. Even if they were adorable little things. Well, that was that. She quickly got her hands on some meat. Surely she might be able to get one of these. Oh...was this a smart idea? Raisa had handed over an egg...wait, if she'd given up the egg what was she doing getting a fire lizard? Bah, she'd ask later. The egg wasn't ready to hatch, at least that's what she'd been told. So she could get some practice in before Raisa's gift came into the world.

Oh, was Rhias going for the same goal? Grinning, she shimmied around people to get to the other woman's side. "Here for the babies as well?" A playful nudge. She actually liked this girl, much more than some of the other candidates. She wasn't as uptight or as annoying as some people. More fun as well. "Going for a specific color, or just whichever one you can tempt over?"
