Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

"Twice-fardled son of a herdbeast," Hana muttered as she stalked away from the candidate barracks and towards the dank, and frankly depressing depths of the lower caverns. She liked grounds chores; she liked being out in the sun all day and getting her hands dirty with good, honest hard work. Being down in the lower caverns gave her the faint sensation of being buried alive, knowing that there was hundreds of feet of rock above her, that that rock belonged to a dormant volcano and that a good tremor could literally bring down the Weyr on her head...

She'd find a way to make Q'wyn's life a little more difficult after this, that was for sure. Sure, she'd been snarking off to him this morning, but he'd struck her as the kind of guy who could take a joke. Apparently, she'd pushed it too far. How the candidate master had known she hated the lower caverns, she didn't know. Perhaps he'd been paying closer attention than she'd thought to the candidates.

In any case, she was doomed to be miserable for the rest of the bloody week.

"Oh good, you're here," a rather plump drudge greeted her in the kitchens. "I was told we'd be getting an extra one today, but we don't need you in the kitchens right now." Before Hana could ask where she was needed, a broom was being shoved into one hand and a duster into the other. "Go sweep the wine celler. I want it spotless for the hatching feast."

Fred leaned dangerously off her shoulder, ever the mirror for his master's emotions as he hissed. Tas clung to her other shoulder, looking rather ridiculous as Fred took up most of the available room. His eyes whirled in uneasy yellow shades, reflecting Hana's irritation and nervousness. She opened her mouth to point out that guests for the hatching feast wouldn't go into the wine cellar themselves, but the woman was already pushing past her to get to work.

Shaffit.

Well at least she actually knew where they were. Lesley had shown her once, on the way to giving her a tour of his work space in the records room, and she didn't have to worry about getting lost in the winding maze of passages that made up the lower caverns. She brushed Fred irately off her shoulder so that Tas could sit comfortably and let him lead the way, still grumbling to herself and fantasizing about how she could get back at Q'wyn without losing her candidacy. When she arrived, she took one look at the rows and rows of bottles and sagged in defeat. It was going to be a long day.

Finally, finally he was allowed to do proper chores again, and instead he got more of the same. Dust this, tidy that; these kind of chores were useful, but he was tired of doing things that didn't matter much. They could put off sweeping and dusting the wine cellar for a sevenday or two and still have it done before the Hatching. Dirkallo sighed and kept moving, pushing the broom in its back-and-forth course along the stone floor. Well, he'd just have to make the best of it. This room would be the cleanest it had ever been when he was done.

Arki (instructed to be on his best behavior) was examining his reflection in one of the bottles on the shelf when the door thudded open, letting in the soft sounds of agitated firelizards and irate grumbling. Dirk froze, his imagination going wild. Faranth, was this a drunk rider coming to raid the stores? There was no way he was going to convince them to move on if they decided to be confrontational.

His firelizard peered between the bottles and chirped cheerfully, sending the image of a short, dark-haired girl and two bronze flitts. Dirkallo exhaled in relief; though he didn't know her name, he recognized her as one of the other Candidates. It stung a bit that they'd sent him help, as if he couldn't manage on his own, but he'd take that over an irritable, drink-addled man who could break him over his knee if he wanted to.

He probably should say something now so she knew he was here, Dirk decided. In a place full of glass bottles, he didn't want anyone getting startled. So he poked his head around the shelf. "Hey."

"Hey."

"Jays!" Hanalei yelped and nearly jumped out of her skin.

Fred trilled joyfully and fluttered over to greet another bronze fire lizard and Tas just huddled closer to her neck, burying his face in her hair and shivering. "Shaffit, I didn't know anyone else would be here. I wish that wherry-brained woman had said something; you nearly gave me a heart attack."

A moment's inspection revealed that the boy wasn't a lower caverns worker, but another candidate and one she recognized vaguely from lessons and around the barracks. She was somewhat relieved that she wasn't stuck in a dank room with a complete stranger, but that didn't make the task ahead of her any less irritating. Still, she offered him a wry smile.

"Got stuck with the shaffity job too, huh? I'd honestly rather be shoveling the stables then trapped down here. What about you?"

Dirkallo came fully out into the open, broom clutched in his hands. "Sorry, I figured that would happen. Better to get it over with away from the bottles, though." Arki fluttered down to his master's shoulders, chirping politely to the other two bronzes before settling in to groom the dust from his toes.

"Well, I don't know if I'd go that far..." he said, his nose wrinkling at the memory of how ripe soiled straw could get. "Still, I wish they were putting me back on tougher jobs than this. I'm not an invalid anymore..." This last was muttered, but still audible if Hana was paying any attention at all. He stewed for a moment, then shook himself out of it. "Anyway, there's work to be done. Do you prefer to dust or to sweep? Or we could do the jobs at the same time."

With someone else in the room with her, Hana felt less like the hundreds of feet of rock above her would fall down around her at any moment. It was a ridiculous feeling, one that she squashed firmly as she set the duster aside. "I should sweep I think," she said. "As much as it pains me to admit, I'm too bloody short to reach all of the wine racks, and I'm sure that woman will expect every inch of this place to be spotless."

She brushed Tas gently off her shoulder and the little bronze swept off to join Fred in his exploration of the wine room. Fred alighted upon the highest shelf and cocked his head at his own reflection in a bottle. He poked at it, chirping animatedly. Whether or not he recognized his own reflection, Hana didn't know. She liked to think bronze fire lizards were self aware enough not to be fooled by something like that.

She set to sweeping. The sooner she got this job done, the sooner she could taste fresh air again. "So, you're a candidate, yeah? I think I've seen you around." Talking made the stone less menacing so she babbled on. "I've been here for a little over a turn now. Cirseth's will be my third clutch. How about you?"

Before she could go on, a loud pop echoed through the room. She whirled about to find Fred lapping at the opening of a bottle and Tas wrestling with a cork. Clever little bastards. "Oh for the love of little green dragons! Are you two trying to get me stuck down here for the rest of my bloody candidacy?! Jays!"

Her point was valid enough, and Dirkallo gathered the small dirt pile he'd accumulated with his broom before setting the tool aside. He hadn't been given a duster, but several plain rags should be fine for the job at hand. Carefully, he picked up a bottle from the top shelf and wiped it clean before setting it on the floor and reaching for another. The other Candidate's chatter wasn't terribly distracting; it wasn't like he needed intense focus for this chore. "Second, but my first was one of Lisenyth's-"

A loud pop rang out before he could get any farther, and he flinched, nearly dropping the bottle. His scrambling fingers caught it before it could slip free and he clutched it to his chest, his heart pounding. Dirk barely had time to breathe a sigh of relief before Arki sprang into action. The firelizard swooped at the other bronzes, chattering as he attempted to reinforce their mistress's scolding. He shoved himself between Fred and the bottle, which separated them rather more than intended.

Dirkallo lunged for the falling bottle, knowing it was out of reach but unable to stop the impulse. It ended up being the worse course of action, as the movement sent one of the bottles on the floor flying straight into the side of the shelves. The resulting crash seemed unimaginably loud. He stared dumbly for a moment before stooping to recover one of the bottles. It had broken at the neck, spilling about half of its contents across the floor. The other was sitting in a slowly growing puddle of its own, the liquid seeping out from the spinner-webbed cracks spanning its side.

"...shells."

Well then. They were well and truly fardled.

The situation was so ridiculous, so out of control, that it was pointless to panic anymore. So Hana did the next best thing and started laughing hysterically. Tas snapped defensively at Arki before dropping down to the floor with Fred to lap at spilled wine. Hana wasn't sure if alcohol could hurt the bronzes but she brushed them away from the mess with her foot anyways, still clutching her sides in laughter.

"Jays! We're in trouble now, aren't we?" The small girl stole the broken bottle away from Dirkallo and took a sip. "I can't take you two anywhere." Tas fluttered to her shoulder and creeled pathetically. His contrition tugged at her heartstrings. Fred, however, was an unrepentant little shaffit. He stared up at her from the floor, looking every bit as amused as she was.

She took another sip and then grinned at Dirk, holding the bottle out. "Can't let this go to waste! It'd be a shame to just pour out the rest, don't you think? And if I'm gonna clean up a mess like this, I might as well have a little fun in the process."

Arki settled on top of the shelving, his eyes whirling yellow in concern. A Bad Thing had happened, but he wasn't sure who was at fault for this, himself or the other bronze. Worse, his master was alarmed. He crooned softly, waiting for instructions.

Dirkallo grimaced as he looked at the mess. The only thing still going for them was the fact that it was white wine and not red; red would be much more likely to stain the floor despite their best efforts. Hana started to laugh, and he looked at her, bewildered. What was funny about it? They were going to be in so much trouble when somebody found out.

He continued to stare as she slipped the bottle out of his hands and took a sip. It would be a waste to pour it out but- wasn't this violating one of the rules? Surely there was an empty basin or something they could use to hold the wine, and so long as it was clean, nobody would notice the difference once it had been put in a wineskin or goblet to be served.

"I- I don't know," he said doubtfully, eyeing the extended bottle. With his luck, he'd manage to cut himself on the glass. "Wouldn't we get in trouble for this? I mean, more than for the mess."

((If this is hard to follow, let me know, orz))

Hanalei let him know her opinion of his trepidation with a snort. "We're already in trouble," she said, wiggling the bottle. "I mean we can clean all this up and move things around so it looks like it didn't happen but...eventually someone's gonna realize there's two good wine bottles missing and know just who to blame. So," she took another big sip and then shoved the bottle at Dirkallo again, "Might as well make the best of the situation, don't you think?"

And jays, after the day she'd had so far, a good drink would do wonders for her mood. She could almost tolerate the stuffy lower caverns with alcohol buzzing through her bloodstream. And she wouldn't have the heart to be angry at the fire lizards who had caused the mess in the first place. And if they managed to Impress before anyone realized two of their best bottles of wine were missing...

They could probably get away consequence free. "C'mon. Don't be wherry-hearted. Have a drink."

Her argument didn't quite sit right with him, but another glance around didn't show Dirkallo anything suitable to use as a container. Well, it was better than letting it go to waste... surely nobody would care more than if they had just let it spill. But he hadn't been planning on hiding it-

"I- I am not!" he spluttered. What did drinking wine have to do with being a coward anyway? But to prove it, he grabbed the bottle and took a swig. The drink managed to be reminiscent of both cream and the citrusy fruits that had always graced the table at home, and though sweet, was not overbearingly so. It was surprisingly pleasant, and the second sip was more for pleasure than to make a statement.

He eyed the bottle speculatively. "Got to be Benden... ah, there's the mark. Too light to be a Tillek." Not that he was an expert, of course, but some things were common knowledge on Pern.
