Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

On this day, Dofon had started a usual job of copying right after lunch. The hides he was working with comprised one of the largest projects he had been allowed to work on during his brief tenure working with the archivists: it was a record detailing events that took place a Turn or two ago as the Red Star was being bracketed in the Star Stones and the Pass officially began. He was going quite slowly as he copied, not only making sure his handwriting was as neat as possible, but to make sure he read through the hides. It was amazing how much he missed of events like this having been still in the creche; he had no idea most of this stuff even happened.

It took Dofon quite a long time, but he was finally almost done. However, a knock on the archives door caught his attention, and the moment he let himself look away from his work, he realized that he was the only one in the archives. The boy's eyes widened; how long had he been here!? He was suddenly quite tired, but he knew he had to finish his project, and he had to welcome his late visitor. He grimaced as he wished he could actually just shout out to the visitor to come in, but instead he had to actually open the door and prepare his slate to "talk' to whoever was visiting. He swallowed his nerves and opened the door, and his jaw gaped as he saw who was standing right before him; a queenrider, by knots. It even surprised him more that the full-fledged Queenrider, who most certainly had to be about twice his age, was barely taller than him! He was so young and low-ranking, the woman deserved someone better to talk to than him! He began to write on his slate, chalk dusting his hands before he turned it around to show the woman what he had written:

Greetings, Queenrider. I am Dofon, assistant to the archivists. I am sorry, but I believe all the others have left. Did you need my help?

Things had been crazy since the recent flight of Cirseth, and thus the choosing of Vaioa's new Weyrleader. With the change in leadership came a slew of new things to do, listings to fix, supplies to bring in, etc. It was a very menial task, though Senyrae didn't necessarily mind. It kept her busy, and if there was anything she liked to do it was to be kept busy.

Bresaith, snoozing away at their weyr, made a brief remark. It'll be better when I'm up there again. Those males have no idea what they are truly missing. Chuckling, the girl replied, You're turning your back on Avath already? Of course not. I just like the attention.

Whatever made her happy. It was good to know she had at least forgotten about the troubles that happened at her Hatching, content with going about the queen's usual daily business. Smirking unconditionally, the girl hefted the last of the hides she had scribed and started heading out to the Archives.

Isn't it late? What if they aren't there now? Well if they're not, then I'll come back tomorrow. Might as well check at least. Bresaith shrugged, continuing once again to snooze the day away.

Truth be told, she kind of wanted to just have some time for herself, but she knew better than to shirk her duties. And right now she would have to have someone double check on these to make sure everything looked okay.

Finally arriving, she knocked on the door, not hearing a sound until faint scuffles and footsteps caught her ears. Ah-ha! So someone was still here. The door opened, however, to reveal not one of the archivist workers, but a small lad only an inch or so shorter than her, but would probably grow out of it soon. And very young too, from the looks of it. She gave him a small smile. "Hi there. Is one of the Archivists in today?"

Surprisingly, the boy did not answer, but proceeded to grab a slate and scribble until he showed her the words. "Oh!" Hmmm... that was interesting. This was something she never experienced before. "Well Dofon, I was hoping to have these hides looked over before giving them to Talora. I like to double-check before handing them in." Sheepishly she smiled at Dofon. "If you need me to I can come back tomorrow?"

Dofon cocked his head curiously at the Queenrider and the hides in her head. His curiosity began to get the better of him as he could only begin to wonder what sort of record Senyrae had in her hands. Oh! He should get to see it, especially since no one else was around! Besides, all she wanted was for someone to check them; he could do that with his eyes closed! Well, okay, that would make things hard, but Dofon had all the confidence in the world that he could proofread hides; even copying old hides was harder than that! The slate turned back toward his writing position, the little assistant began scribbling another message onto the slate, before turning it back over to Senyrae, an unusually proud grin on the boy's face.

You can wait until tomorrow if you want, but I can do it right now if you are in a hurry. I usually help with checking and copying hides here, so I am sure they won't mind me taking up this project. You can count on me!

Seeing the small lad's eyes light up at her remark made her grin as well. The child was just too adorable as he wrote on the small slate once more with new words in their place. "Oh, you can? I'm not in a hurry but..." He seemed eager enough to help her out. And she would like to get it done as early as possible.

Nodding her head, Senyrae replied, "If you really want to, then sure! Thank you very much, Dofon. I appreciate it." After a moment she added, "And please, call me Senyrae."

Why does he not speak? I thought all humans had that tendency to speak to others, not write on a slate.

The queenrider had pondered that when the archivist brought out the small object, immensely curious as to what could have happened. The temptation to ask was a mighty one, but thankfully she held it in check. At least for the moment.

Taking a seat, Senyrae placed the hides on the table with her stick of charcoal on hand, gesturing to a spot. "So, some of the numbers look correct, but sometimes I might miss an addition here or there. It's hard to keep track when you mix around numbers, but I seem to be doing them okay for the most part. And here, I'm wondering if any of the names on the listings are out of place. With the new wing being added, I want to make sure everyone is in their proper spot."

The queenrider gave Dofon a quizzical look. "I think that's about it. It won't be too much work, will it?"

Dofon wiggled ever so slightly as he awaited Senyrae's request for him. Not only would he be able to do some work that wasn't quite as low-brow as copying and organizing hides, but he was doing it in service of Senyrae, a Queenrider, a Junior Weyrwoman! When the young woman requested that she be called Senyrae, the tiny mute actually blushed a little; usually when a higher ranking member of the Weyr hierarchy visited the Archives, it seemed like they were always called by their rank, or at least a polite "sir" or "madam". Dofon was quite honored to be able to know Senyrae on a name basis, even though it was likely she was like this with everyone!

The diminutive assistant peered over Senyrae's shoulder as she explained her needs to him. Almost immediately he began to visualize how exactly he should complete this task. Even at first glance, Dofon spotted a fixable error on the top of one of the hides, a seeming lapse in arithmetic. He then looked at the Wing listings, quickly scanning the names to familiarize himself with the format of the information. With his task assigned, the mute boy scrawled another message down on his slate, and he set it down on the table for the Queenrider to see, a big cheesy grin on his face.

I can do this. You can count on me!
