Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

A certain excitement buzzed around Metralts head the moment he laid eyes on the chore list for this morning. He was in a group of Candidates that not only was working in the lower caverns, but working in the creche! And not only was he working in the creche, he had the chore assigned to him for both morning and afternoon! Metralt's eyes danced with glee as he ate breakfast and prepared to walk in the creche for his first stint. Sure, ever since he had accepted Candidacy his presence at the creche had been much diminished. However, that certainly didn't stop the childish adoration that overflowed the moment the enormous man walked through that door.

"Uncy Metralt!"
"Metralt, hi!"
"We missed you uncy!"

"I missed you all too. I wish I could come everyday," Metralt smiled widely as at least three kids attached themselves to his tree-trunk legs. "Whoa now!" He laughed deeply, "not too many at a time, I won't be able to walk and I might accidentally hurt one of you!"

"You never hurt anyone uncy Metralt!" One of the kids piped up, and Metralt playfully rolled his eyes at the kid. "I guess that's true. Still," and he gently disengaged clutching arms from his legs, walking further into the creche once he was free. A gaggle of small children followed him as he began to think of a game to play with the kids. "So do you any of you have any suggestions for games?" He eyed another Candidate nearby, and grinned, "I'm asking you as well, since you're with me on the chore!"

Raisa shuffled uneasily as Metralt attempted to rope her into whatever the giant had planned, abrasive palms dragging themselves in slow circles across the rough material of her trousers. The normally stony-faced woman looked downright apprehensive with so many littler bodies running underfoot, and her eyes latched onto the much taller man with a voiceless plea for mercy. When she’d been assigned Lower Caverns work, she hadn’t been expecting this.

The former Miner was formidable in certain arenas pertaining to her old Craft, but her skills stopped a far cry short of long-lasting composure alongside other human beings. Wailing toddlers she couldn’t begin to fathom, and even the elder children seemed wary of the perpetual frown Raisa wore to anything other than solitary labor. She’d been down here once or twice before, and for some reason the Creche workers hadn’t seen fit to plead their case to the Master in charge of dispatching Candidates to their tasks.

Raisa couldn’t understand why, the caretakers could see for themselves first-hand how shriveled her maternal instincts were. She’d steamrolled through Anger and Denial, and was on the cusp of entertaining a Bargain of some sort. This wasn’t the place for her! A delighted squeal coming from one of the bright-faced children encircling Metralt had a finger of unadulterated anguish shivering down her spine, and solidifying that thought in the forefront of her mind.

“I don’t…know any games.” With a great deal of reticence, Raisa admitted to a terribly droll childhood. What ones she’d entertained herself with as a tot were long forgotten. And the ones she was privy to nowadays she was sure the hawk-eyed matrons of the Creche would tan her hide for; gambling was not a child-friendly exercise. She knew THAT much. “…something quiet would be good.” Another shriek had her grimacing painfully.

Although he tried his best to hide a grimace at the fellow Candidate's discomfort towards his idea - she seemed uncomfortable just being here! - Metralt frowned a little bit when Raisa's response was surprisingly subdued. "Hold on just a sec, kids, we're going to cook up something special for you right now!" Metralt winked at the kids, cusping a couple of little boys firmly on the shoulder as a gesture to keep them where they stood before trudging on over to the other Candidate.

"I have to apologize," and Metralt's face was suddenly quite apologetic, perhaps even a little embarrassed at his own eagerness. "I used to work here, and the kids know me very well. I love working here, and it is so easy to get carried away. It's hard for me to imagine people coming in here being so reluctant and uncomfortable around the kids. I didn't mean to pull you in to this if you didn't want to be here." He looked at the ground ashamedly for a second, before the smile was back on his face. "In any case, I think I can get them quiet, but I'll need your help. I need a judge of sorts to help me play this game." A wide grin was now on his face as he turned back to the children. "All right! We're going to play a game! To win this game, all you have to do is stay still and be quiet the longest! You cannot talk, you cannot move, otherwise vicious wild whers will see you and you'll be out!" He grinned, before gesturing to Raisa and himself, "I'll be the hunter! I pull out anyone whose caught, and the lovely lady here will help me find victims! Do you understand? We're about to start, so get still!" The excited giggling of the children died down as they took to lying still, though many of them couldn't help but wiggle a bit. He whispered to Raisa, "don't be too harsh on them, it's hard for them to stay perfectly still; look, so many of them are wiggling. Aren't they cute?"

Raisa reflexively shrank away as Metralt approached; the man’s commanding stature dwarfed her as easily as she did the children. His fists must be the size of hams! The Miner had been born and raised around burly men, but this behemoth was something else entirely; that the matrons had no problems with this giant handling their charges had Raisa reconsidering just how bright those women were.

She stubbornly held her ground, tamping down any instinctive urges to flee as the Candidate warily studied Metralt’s face, especially his beetled brow. Something troubled him, and for a second Raisa questioned the wisdom in not withdrawing. But before she had the chance to leap on the defensive, Metralt spoke and banished the woman’s concern that she was somehow to blame for this change of mood. He was apologizing? Her eyes bulged as she reevaluated his expression to a look of sheepish chagrin, emphasized as the big man's head drooped. Such an unequivocal show of kindness baffled the woman who was conditioned to expect the worst from people.

“Uh.” What did one say to something like that? After furiously blinking her eyes for a few seconds, Raisa nodded dumb assent before falling behind Metralt as he addressed the crowd of eagerly squirming children once more. His flattering introduction of her had the woman awkwardly clearing her throat, and before her disbelieving eyes the raucous weyrbrats were all prostrate on the ground with a few wiggling exceptions.

Metralt’s bemused aside startled her into the equivalent of a murmured shrug. …how did he do that? Beginning to see the other Candidate in an entirely different light, Raisa studied her much larger counterpart while he gazed fondly at their charges. “How did you do that?” The woman gave voice to her query, having come to no satisfactory conclusion herself. His gentleness emboldened her, and it would undoubtedly come in handy should she be unfortunate enough to land another day in the Créche.

always classy, never trashy
((Okay I had to do this, saw topic was open. If you mind let me know and I will have this deleted. Inspiration struck me and I thought Rennavi would liven things up for ya! Again feel free to tell me to leave and find fun elsewhere))

The fardling guy in charge of something or other thought she needed to go to the crčche. Rennavi knew for a fact that she did not deserve such designation, fourteen now she could not be considered a child. Had it been her height? Her face? Whatever she should’ve knocked his teeth out for sending her down here. Still it had seemed a grand opportunity to shirk chores before being properly introduced to a candidate master and getting assigned such dull work. Might as well fight out where this crčche happened to be located. Probably have to watch the little dimglows tomorrow if her luck held, seemed some kind of familial curse, that bad luck. Blame it on uncle.

Rasputin hummed and put his head below her chin, wrapping his tail warmly around her neck. His purring tickling her throat. She grinned at the bronze flitt, taking a moment to give him back some of the love he heaped on her. “You always do cheer me up Ras. You like this crazy place?” He trilled happily, removing holding onto her shoulder as he leaned out and bugled his glory. Taking to flaring his wings wildly, sending Rennavi’s hair in a wild flurry. The candidate just grinned and picked up the bronze. She didn’t feel like getting buffeted by a wing right now. Rasputin turned to look at her curiously, and she gave him a wink. Then he knew what was about to happen.

He flared his wings just as she tossed him into the air, a wonderful game indeed! Trilling happily through the hall he circled round her, happy to show off even if he didn’t have an audience. Over the firelizard singing Rennavi heard the usual sounds one would expect of a crčche. At least the instructions that man had given her had been somewhat good. Curious now she silenced Rasputin with a quick motion and listened to the commotion. Suddenly a great booming voice announced a game. Oh well that would be just great.

Oh she knew this game, and that tactic. Tricky crčche folk. When a brat herself she’d picked up quickly on the point of this game. Rennavi did not take kindly to being silenced, especially when it was done in such an underhanded manner. Grinning to herself she figured it would be time to make this game a bit more exciting. She motioned for Rasputin to come to her, he would need to help in this plan. Quickly she laid it out, imagining the images the firelizard would need. Quick on the uptake Ras chirped, tail twitching as he prepared. The firelizard edged around to Rennavi’s back, clinging to her shirt, concealing himself. Had anyone faced her they wouldn’t see him, though coming from behind he draped rather magnifently. They were ready.

Rennavi could hear the quiet query of a woman, someone new to the game then? Well time to learn the new rules. With a rush she burst from her concealed spot outside the doorway. Though barely standing over five feet she spread her arms wide and gave a bestial roar. “Being quiet will not help you! The wild ones can smell you!” Hands held like claws she growled and launched forward near the children scattering a few screaming. “Beware the wild WHER!” She screamed aloud, as Rasputin burst from his hiding spot on her back.

The firelizard screeched loudly, pretending by all means to be incredibly fierce. He bugled again, though his eyes betrayed a friendly blue-green light. Sweeping low over the children’s heads he pretended to spew fire…perhaps not knowing how whers really attacked. Still the effect was great as he circled back around, tail brushing the top of some heads as he roared mightily.

"Well," Metralt shyly began to answer Raisa's question, eying the still yet playful children to make sure that they weren't breaking the rules before lowering his voice, "I've been here for a few Turns now. I started out as a drudge, but I found myself coming here more often. I quickly was picked up to work here, as I quickly learned how to interact with the littles. I know how most of them tick, not just in general but each specific child as well." He smiled, lowering his voice a little more to make absolutely sure that none of the kids heard him. "I figured if you wanted them to be a bit more quiet, I could get them to do this and it would be a win situation for everyone." Another voice from nearby caught Metralt's attention, and the beastly man grinned at Rennavi. "Don't move, kids, or it will eat you!" Metralt teased playfully as he watched the children closely.

So then he had a proclivity towards children. A disappointment, seeing as how Raisa was terrible at mothering things; in truth, it wasn’t that hard to guess of Metralt, seeing as how the towering man had only the gentlest smiles for the behaving children under his care. “I appreciate it,” was all she could manage to mumble in her aside, before Rennavi sprang into action and the room was once again filled with shrieking, spastic children. The Candidate jumped a little as the younger girl’s growl and her bronze’s shriek tore through the peaceable calm, clearly thrown off her guard and reeling in shock as her sanctuary exploded into chaos.

“STOP!” She retaliated the only way she knew how, voice booming over the din in what Raisa desperately hoped was an authoritative tone. It just sounded like a panicked shout to her, but then she was distracted by the many visions of children running into sharp objects while being simultaneously mauled by the bronze fire-lizard swooping over their heads. Someone was going to get hurt, and SHE was going to have the worst fardling migraine on Pern.

Why wasn’t Metralt doing a sharding thing to stop this insanity?! A few of the children had idled in their paths, but before Raisa could flag them down, the fire-lizard would sweep by, and they were off again, shrieking. It was all play, but Raisa could only see and hear the panic they play-acted.

Metralt smiled at Rennavi, happy that he had calmed her down from her original nervous state. "I understand your hesitance," the brute nodded in agreement, "I've seen a lot of other Candidates who get very shy around children. Some of them just don't like children, and think they're too energetic and annoying." The older Candidate merely shrugged before admitting, "guess I've always been more patient than most, and I like seeing them happy."

Unfortunately, the peace and quiet in the creche was temporary as several of the children began shrieking and giggling. Metralt immediately sprung into action, "you're eaten! You're eaten!" He began calling some of the littles out for their noise, corralling them to gather separate from the group of kids still playing. In a hushed yet playful tone, Metralt suggested, "you can play again after this game finishes if you want to try again. But remember, stay still and quiet!"

Metralt grimaced as he looked back to Rennavi, who, in her panic at seeing the children go hog wild, had shouted a plea for the children to stop. She looked like she was about to explode! The beastly Candidate closed the distance between the other Candidate and himself, and put a calming hand on the young woman's shoulder. "It's all right, this is normal." He smiled warmly, "y'know, I think I remember hearing that we do the chores here because dragons start off as babies as well."
