Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The slightly unfocused gaze and his previous experience of dragonriders were enough to inform Dirkallo that her dragon was running her own commentary. Hopefully the dragon wasn't being too hard on the girl, but then again, after... how long had she said, seventeen? months, they would know each other well enough to avoid needlessly needling each other. Oh, that was none of his business anyway.

"A pleasure to meet you, miss Zannah," he repeated, with a smile. "No no, you don't have to do that. Well, I mean I'd appreciate the help but..." It was his turn to have color rise in his face. "You've got your dragon to tend to, and stuff like that. There's no need..." Awkwardly, he shifted his gaze back to the piles of leather. Most of the work was going to be sorting this stuff, but that was his duty, his chance to prove his usefulness to the Weyr before taking on a baby dragon.

Arki chattered in response before his attention was caught by a loose buckle. The bronze pounced on the bit of metal, picking it up and bringing it to a small pile of similar stray bits he was collecting by the doorway.

There is no but, that is all.
Zannah watched the small bronze. How curious, did flits enjoy shiny things like the belt buckle? She'd only really watched their interactions with their owners... or was it handlers... no that was Wher.... Masters, no... It was a shame she had left her sketch pad in her quarters, she didn’t know when she’d have the chance to draw a fire lizard acting like this again. Again Theriath gentle laugh rolled through her mind, snapping the girl out of her thoughts.

"Zannah is fine...." She looked down; being called miss reminded her to much of her time with her family. She liked the idea of being separate from that time. "I suppose... if you don't..."

No.

"Theriath?" She was shocked by the firm tone in the normally sweet greens voice.

Stay, if you come back now you'll return to your silly books. In their quarters the green stretched before curling up for a nap. She was quite content to have her rider interacting with someone; well someone outside of her duties might be a better way to phrase it. Make a friend, he has one of those small things you enjoy so much…

Zannah didn't believe that her studies were silly. If she didn't learn everything she needed to know she would fail as a dragon rider. And she didn't want that.

Yet did Dirkallo want her help?

“I… I could s-stay and … keep you company.” She blushed, looking up scared she’d offended him. “I-if you want…that is…”

She gripped the leather in her hand, she was expecting a negative. At least she could say she tried before returning to Theriath.

Dirk watched her hesitate, unsure of what he should say. If she really wanted to stay, he wasn't going to kick her out, but it felt wrong for her to work on his assigned chore. It would be up to her, he decided, and waited for her to finish gathering her thoughts. It wasn't too long in coming.

"Like I said, it's a public room," he responded with a little laugh. "I couldn't kick you out. Not that I want to, I mean, you seem like a pleasant enough person. You're welcome to stay if you want to, I just don't want you to feel obligated to help me work when you have enough work of your own, taking care of a dragon and all-" Forcibly, he clamped his mouth shut, mortified that he had started babbling again. He should- put things back on the shelves. Yes, that would be a good idea.

Quickly he stood up, placing the smallest sets of straps he had found off to one side of a shelf. If he could just get these grouped roughly by size, that would probably help loads when riders came down here in a hurry. As he did so, the small shelf full of harness oils caught his eye. He had no idea how to tell if the oil had spoiled. Maybe his guest did.

"M- um, Zannah?" Dirkallo asked, reaching out to put a hand on the shelf in question. "Do you have any idea how to tell if these are still good enough to use? Or does harness oil go bad at all?"

((Sorry it took so long....after much googling, and pestering of the father unit :P I have come to the conclusion that oil used on leather do not go bad, only thicken over time. If this is wrong ehh, I tried, and failed.))

Zannah tilted her head to the side, letting his question hang in the air for a moment as she mentally went through everything she had read on the topic of leather and oils. Truth be told there hadn’t been many, other taking care of her riding harness. Though if she thought back she never noticed the tanner at her father’s hold worrying about his oil, unless of course he was running low.

“I-I don’t believe so.” She stood slowly, making sure to place her harness and new strap against the wall away from the piles in the floor.

She slowly moved around until she was standing at the oils, picking up one she inspected the contents. It seemed to be the same as the one she had in her quarters. Smiling she placed it back on the shelf.

“….maybe…. putting the… newer un-used bottles in the back….” She looked over at Dirkallo. Waiting to see if he agreed, it was his task after all. Last thing she wanted to do was mess him up.

Dirk considered the suggestion and found it a good one. "And if they do go bad, at least the ones that will go bad first will also get used first. Works for me!" He smiled as he went for another harness and hauled it up to the appropriate shelf. Two more, and then he would need to sort the rest...

"So, tell me about your dragon," he prompted, casting about for a safe subject. He didn't want Zannah to feel like he was prying into her personal life, and he had yet to meet a dragonrider who didn't like talking about his or her dragon. "You're from the oldest bunch of Weyrlings, you said? Lisenyth's?"

Dirkallo gave a soft grunt as he lifted the next set of straps. He'd been a Candidate for that clutch, but he didn't remember Zannah; if her shyness was anything to go by, maybe he wouldn't have had the opportunity to notice her. But he was sure if she just described her dragon, he'd remember which one it had been.

((This is abysmally sparse and I apologize : P ))

Zannah smiled, happy that she was able to help. Even if it was just a little. She started shorting through the bottles, seeing how he was still messing with the straps. She peaked at him when he asked about her dragon.

“Theriath?” She paused, tilting her head to the side. He wanted to know about her? “Well she’s a green… with a teal head…and tail…. I-I am sure y-you’ve seen her… around…”

She looked back to her self assigned task and giggled softly, “She’s loving, and… very energetic. I have tr-trouble keeping up s-sometimes.” She continued to sort, a soft smile on her lips. “She has a te-tendency to… put me in sit-situations I tend to avoid….”

You got yourself into this one on your own Zannah mine. The green replied with a teasing tone.

“Though.. I think… she means well.” Zannah said softly. Blushing she looked over at him, “Ar-are you worried… about the hatching?”
