Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

If one looked at his room, they could be forgiven for thinking that Dirkallo was not fond of cleaning. He often let the tidiness of his own quarters slip, especially if he could still find everything he wanted and it wasn't bothering anyone else. There were better ways to spend his time.

His assignment to clean some of the storerooms was received cheerfully enough. It was something that the riders and normal staff were too busy to do - they had enough problems running the Weyr or caring for their dragons. No, this was something best left to those with extra hands, and there would always be plenty of those before a Hatching. Even when the popular opinion of the Weyr had been low enough to stop tithes, there had been Candidates.

Dirk poked his head into the doorway and fumbled for the glow. The room smelled pleasantly of leather oils - not surprisingly, as it was the small storeroom the Weyr kept for outgrown riding straps and strips to mend broken harnesses. It was a mark of how much leather the place used, that they had such a room at all when there was a Leathercraft Hall just a hop over at Vaioa Hold.

Arki flitted off to open the glowbasket at the other end of the room as Dirkallo probed the shelves. Not too bad; this place was visited too often to gain a thick layer of dust and decay. But there was enough to merit the work, and besides, everything was tossed haphazardly onto shelves. There was no real order to it.

The Candidate decided to start simply. All the complete (or mostly complete) straps were piled together, and the cut plain leather stacked next to it. That cleared the shelves enough for him to start dusting, and he set to with a will.

There is no but, that is all.
Zannah frowned as she slipped the leather harness around the green. She'd been going over her notes and decided to practice tightening the harness. She'd learned early that if she didn't tighten the harness enough she was going to be falling off, and strength was something she was lacking. A sigh left the small green rider as she looked up at the teal head staring down at her, the straps just wouldn't reach. Zannah removed the leather straps from Theriath. "You have out grown them."

I told you. Zannah couldn't help the small smile that formed at the amused voice in her head.

Moving around the now curled up dragon the brunette shock her head. "I will be back soon..." Zannah frowned as she made her way down to the lower caverns, staying as close to the wall as possible and keeping her eyes down. Her hands clenched around the leather in her hands, she wasn't sure if she would ever get used all the people. It had gotten easier since Theriath, but she still had trouble starting conversations.

You should smile, look up. Theriath yawned back in their quarters, her eyes closing as she keep tabs on her rider. Zannah smiled but didn't raise her eyes.

The store room she was looking for came into view, pushing the door open slowly. She didn't notice the other person at first, but paused when she noticed that the glow was lite.

"Um." Zannah stared at the young man the leather straps clenched to her chest as she blushed. "Sorr-sorry. I didn't mean to intrude."

A quick trial and error session proved that a quick wipe just sent the dust into the air, where more careful rubbing and perhaps a dab of harness oil cleared the shelf with no trouble. Dirk had already lost himself in the task when a quiet voice at the door interrupted his humming.

There was a young woman at the door. Younger than he was, by guess, and a full head shorter, with warm brown hair and eyes, and the knots of a weyrling. "No, no, it's a storeroom. You couldn't be intruding if you tried!" He tried smiling to put her at ease and sneezed as some of the disturbed dust entered his nose. Of course he'd manage to be in the way of someone.

"I'm just erm. Cleaning," the Candidate added, waving a hand at the piles of harness. Well, that didn't look much like it was getting better. "Can I help you find something? I had to take this all off to dust the shelves..."

Zannah looked around the small store room, true it wasn't a private area but he was obviously busy. She peaked at him noting his candidate knots. So he was working on his chores. She noted the pile of harness and leather. How was she going to find what she was looking for.

When he sneezed she jumped slightly, her startled eyes darting to him. Theriath's distinct chuckle drifted over her.

Relax mine, I don't think he is going to harm you with a sneeze. Right, it was just a sneeze, nothing compared to some of the noises Theriath made. But still in the small room, which she was just now noticing was very dusty, it had seemed loader then a dragons roar.

She blushed noticing she hadn't been paying attention to what he was really saying. What had he said... help right. "I was just... you see... well..." She looked down at the harness in her hands.

She was making a mess of this. Her loose hair feel over her shoulder as she closed her eyes trying to calm herself. She'd been in the Weyr for over a turn now, why was this so hard.

"I... ha-harness..." She whispered, her cheeks darkening as she realized she wasn't making sense.

He couldn't fail to notice her reaction, of course. Nervous as a wild runner. Instinctively, Dirkallo hopped down off the little stool so he wasn't looming over her and bent down under the pretext of examining the piles of harness. He wasn't all that intimidating, especially next to some of the burly lads he was sharing Candidacy with. Or at least, so he had thought.

Arki stirred from where he had been stalking crawlers in the corner and glided down to his master's shoulder. The pale bronze chirped politely, his eyes whirling in a friendly blue as he studied the new arrival.

Dirk tried to make sense of the straps. They didn't look so complicated on a dragon's neck. "Is the whole thing worn out or does just part of it need replacing?" he asked, moving the ones that were obviously much smaller than the one the weyrling was holding out of the way.

Zannah moved forward slowly, "well... she's grown." She inspected the harness. "The... straps are to short." She wouldn't admit it but him stepping down from the step stool really helped. She had to look up at him still but it wasn't was intimidating as before.

She smiled sweetly at the bronze firelizard, while his master was inspecting one of the piles. She'd always been more relaxed around animals and beasts, and when she came to the Weyr that feeling had moved on to the dragons and their smaller cousins.

"I think... just... a part." She kneed down placing her harness next to her, she reached forward lifting up a strap, examining the length before returning it to the pile. She had a good idea on the length she needed. "I... t-thank you, but... you don't have to stop... your cleaning..."

She looked down, "Not for me."

Another strap was in her hands, she rubbed the leather before returning it to the pile again. There didn't seem to be any organization here. She bite her lower lip reaching forward again.

Arki warbled, fanning his wings slightly. He had no idea what he had done, but it must have been good because it made the new friend smile. The firelizard decided it must have been the head twist, so he continued to do so until he was looking at the weyrling upside down.

"Hm. How old is your dragon? I know they grow fast, but I thought they slowed down once they were big enough to fly-" Dirkallo started, then bit his lip, cutting off the stream of questions. That was probably the last thing this poor girl needed right now. There were other weyrlings and riders he could ask, if he needed to, after all. He pulled another set of harness free from the pile. "This one looks a bit-"

The Candidate stopped and turned to face her, trying to catch her gaze even though her eyes were cast down. "I'd help anyone that wandered in here looking for something. Why shouldn't I help you too?"

She pulled another from the pile, it was slightly smaller than the one she currently had. Placing it back into the pile she frowned.

"She just reached her seventeenth month." She whispered. "It’s true, th-they slow down, but.... Ah, I haven't really... been practicing flying..." Great now she sounded like she wasn't trying in her studies. She was, she really was. But she was scared of falling no matter how many times she was told that she wouldn't. She was having enough trouble getting the harness on right; she was scared that she was doing it wrong.

She looked up, "I just noticed..." Zannah giggled softy at the bronzes antics. She covered her mouth and blushed, looking way as she noticed that the boy was looking at her. How embarrassing, what he must think of her. Laughing for no reason.

"Oh... well... I do-don't want to be a bother..." She noticed the strap in his hands. It might work, it seemed the right length. “Ca-can I see that one?” She gave a slight nod to the one in his hands.

"Oh, it's no trouble. Half of my chores are directly helping riders, anyway. Right, here," Dirkallo handed over the harness, doing his best to keep himself from getting tangled in the straps. If this one was the right size for a dragon not even full grown... Faranth, dragons were big. It was amazing how that simple face escaped you once you got used to having them around.

To avoid staring, he looked away, and only then spotted what his firelizard was up to. "Arki, what are you even doing. You wherry." With a gentle touch, he stroked the bronze, causing the flitt to hum appreciatively. "This is Arkimidez," he added, after a moment of silence. "And I'm Dirkallo. It's a pleasure to meet you, miss..."

Taking the strap from him, giving him a slight smile in return she turned her gaze downward again, examining the strap, yes this one should do. She smiled, as she removed the old strap from the harness, and placed the new one in its place. Hopefully she wouldn't have to replace it too soon.

Theriath hummed in her mind. Mine, I am not done growing. The thought caused the green rider to shake her head, oh dear. Looking down at the harness she noticed that soon she would have trouble with it, if not already.

“Th-thank you, Dirkallo” She blushed, now unsure what to do now that her task was complete. “It… I don’t know how long… You were a big help.” Turning her gaze to the bronze firelizard she smiled sweetly “Nice to meet you Arkimidez.”

Introduce yourself…

“ah right… Z-zannah…” She lowered her head, realizing she’d just answered Theriath out load. What horrible manners, her mother would be ashamed. “I… am called Zannah… do you...need... help cleaning this up...” The last part was barely above a whisper.
