Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Lesley poked his head into the bathing cavern, clutching his personal supply of sweet sand and towels to his chest. He had come during off-hours, hoping to find the room deserted. He was in luck!

Not about to let his opportunity slip by, the young man skittered into the room and set his bathing things down beside the pool. Scow, always worked up when his master was nervous, did circles around the room, peering into cracks for interlopers. Les ignored his firelizard and slipped out of his shoes, stripping hurriedly before plunging into the water. He sucked in a sharp gasp at the cold and tugged at the tie on his sweet-sand bag as he shivered.

He wasted no time beginning to clean himself as soon as the bag was untied. He glanced nervously over his shoulder at the door, afraid someone might come in. Scow posted himself on a ledge near the door, keeping watch.

J'co sighed and stretched as he wandered down the hallway towards the public bathing pools, unbearably sore from a long day of flying sweeps. Somewhere on the fire heights Piranth was stretched out, soaking up what was left of the sunlight. He felt his dragon's soreness as acutely as his own and that just made his mission to get into a bath that much more urgent.

The bluerider paid little attention to any of the room's occupants upon first entering, focusing more on casually shedding his clothing and grabbing his bag of sweetsand out of his coat pocket. Two green fire lizards swooped into the room after him, chattering excitedly. He ignored them and sank gladly into the pool of water. He'd soak first, then get clean later.

You could have bathed in our weyr, you know.

The pool here is bigger. I wanted to stretch out. He sighed happily, letting his eyes finally sweep the room and settle on its only other occupant. He lifted an eyebrow speculatively at the boy. "Are you in a hurry or something?"

Les heard the footfalls before Scow's sharp warning chirp. He turned his back to the entrance, heart racing. He wasn't done washing yet!! Grasping at straws, he grabbed another handful of sand and scrubbed himself as fast as possible. Perhaps if he hurried he could finish before who-ever it was entered the room.

His ears told him it was hopeless. Mortified, he turned himself flat against the wall of the pool and crouched, trying to maintain some level of decency while stark naked. He could feel the blood rushing through his face as the whoever-it-was stepped into the water. What was he going to do!?

The man's voice stopped his lungs working. He stared straight ahead, petrified. After a moment or two he peeked over his shoulder. His eyes widened and he felt something similar to - and yet oh so different - beginning beneath his hands almost at once. He turned back around and forgot about hiding himself behind his hands in favor of scrambling for his towel.

He yanked it into the pool and wrapped it around his waist. He clutched it there, desperate to keep it secure, and slowly turned around. He was still blushing furiously and couldn't bring himself to meet the man's gaze.

Instead, Les found himself gazing right through the clear water and the other man's...

His face invented a new shade of red as he turned round eyes up at a blank bit of wall. He sank down into the water again so that it came up to his chin and tried to keep himself from exploding. Scow fluttered over, landing beside him in the water and chittering anxiously at him.

Not quite brave enough to spare a hand for his firlizard, Les closed his eyes against the embarrassment of existence and muttered, "Sorry." He didn't know what he was apologizing for, but he couldn't think of anything else to say.

Why me?

J'co was torn between utter confusion and worry at the other man's reaction. Lesley was flushed from head to toe and that was definitely not healthy. He frowned at him.

"Are you alright? Perhaps, you're ill. You shouldn't be taking a cold bath if you're sick."

Maybe it's you.

J'co paused as he began to scrub himself, lifting another eyebrow at Lesley. "Is it me? I don't think I've done anything wrong yet, but it's only a matter of time." Maybe he'd been thinking out loud again and offended him somehow. It had been known to happen.

That's not quite what I meant...

"I...I'm not sick..."

Les made a face at himself for sounding like a half-wit. He took a deep breath to steady his nerves a bit.

"I'm just....holdbred and...I'm not used to...uhm..." he couldn't quite bear to voice a summation of what was happening right now.

"I was hoping for privacy..." he mumbled in a tiny voice. He kept his eyes shut, hoping the man would leave. Even if he did have very nice...

Oh, jays...

Les sank underwater with a pitiful moan and tried to think of something, anything, to take his mind off of....that. Scow dipped his head under to watch his master's bizarre behavior with curious yellow eyes.

J'co couldn't help frowning.

"I'm holdborn as well. I'm not sure what you mean. This room is for public bathing so it's not very private at all. If you want to bathe privately you should sleep with the Weyrleader; he gets a bathing chamber all to himself."

Piranth's laughter rang through his head as J'co began rubbing sweetsand against his skin calmly. He literally could not understand why this boy was upset. Was nudity so offensive to him that he'd invent new shades of red when exposed to it? What was he doing in a place full of people who barely understood the concept of modesty then?

"Does my body offend you?"

Les resurfaced for air just in time to hear J'co's suggestion. He boggled at the man, his voice shrill as he cried, "WHAT!? I can't do that!!!"

Unfortunately for Lesley, his body didn't think it was such a bad idea. He suddenly clammed up and curled up, trying to fend off an embarassment worse than death. He whimpered pitifully in response to the man's next question.

"N-no...it..." he stammered, unable to form coherent words around his burning humiliation.

He squeezed his eyes shut and tried to calm himself. He laid his head against the outside edge of the pool and took deep breaths, imagining himself far away. Alone. On a calm beach.

After several moments me managed to calm both his mind and body well enough to communicate intelligently.

"...I was hoping if I came here during off hours I could get a bath in while no one else was around. ....I don't....like other people seeing my body. I don't mind seeing theirs so much....except....seeing guys like you....can create...certain problems."

And there was the blushing again. And the shame. He sighed, his face contorting with frustration and unhappiness. Scow crawled out of the pool to fuss over his master as Les covered his face with one hand.

J'co moved closer to the bath's other occupant, concerned as the boy looked like he was about to be violently ill. Snark and Reimi landed on the edge of the pool and chirped inquiringly before slipping into the chill water and rolling about. He reached out as if to put a hand on Lesley's shoulder but stopped when he spoke.

"Why don't you like people seeing your body?" The bluerider asked. "You're attractive enough."

It was as close to a compliment as J'co usually managed and not really intended as one. He was nothing if not totally honest with himself and everyone else around him. Lesley was not hard at all on the eyes. Piranth snorted in amusement in his mind.

"What kind of problems? Can I help you? I seem to bother a lot of people without meaning to..."

Les turned to face the wall of the pool and put his face down on his arms, miserable. He could hear the rider wading toward him and it made the scholar's heart pound annoying.

The fact that the man thought him attractive was so shocking he couldn't comprehend it. He set it aside for now. It wasn't important. Keeping himself from humiliating himself beyond repair was the priority here.

The man's question rang in his ears. No, there was only one way the man could possibly help and the thought made everything so much worse. Les whimpered. The man was a stranger! He couldn't!

Hana did. Still is, the little voice in his head reminded him.

Les wanted to smash it with a hammer.

He took a deep breath. How could he explain to this man what the problem was without dying of embarrassment?

After several moments, Les said in a weak voice, "Please just leave me alone for a moment..."

J'co flinched back and away from Lesley and frowned. He'd done it again, hadn't he? If there was anything he was good at it was somehow managing to offend anyone he attempted to have a conversation with. This boy was so offended by his presence that he was asking him to leave.

You were there first, that's not fair, Piranth commented dryly.

J'co ignored him and stepped out of the pool, reaching for a towel and then his clothes. Snark and Reimi fluttered to his shoulders. He paused in the doorway and sounded deeply troubled as he spoke. "I'm sorry my presence offends you or makes you uncomfortable. I don't really understand but I won't speak with you again, if that will help. Goodbye." He left hastily, not giving Lesley a chance to respond.

You didn't have to leave! He was being a stuffy holderbrat!

No, I messed up somehow. I always do.
