Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The letter had come in that evening by way of her father's blue firelizard.

Muriel -

I know you were fond of Quentin when you still traveled with us. He was not well when you left us, and he has been struggling an uphill battle ever since.

Two days ago, the fever returned worse than ever, and this morning he died.

I thought you should know.

Muriel gave the blue flitter a bite of meat to entice him to stay just long enough for her to scribble out a quick response.

Thank you for letting me know. Send my best to his mother and sisters. I will visit as soon as I am able.

The blue gave a chirp and rubbed her hand with his tiny head affectionately before popping between, leaving Muriel in a numb silence. Quentin had been a childhood friend, and she knew that his illness never sat well with him. In the end, before she left to become a Candidate, he had confessed to her that he would rather die than become a liability to the wagon train.

"He got his wish, I suppose..." she whispered.

Arilieth rumbled softly, snaking her neck past the curtain that surrounded her rider's sleeping area and pressing her muzzle against Muriel gently. The two spent a few moments like that, with Muriel gripping her dragons snout and staring off into the distance, though she didn't shed any tears. It had been something she'd been expecting for Turns now, she was only surprised it had taken so long.

"I need a drink," she murmured finally, and Arilieth glided her down to the kitchens.

She found herself a table alone with a bottle of wine and a glass, nursing away the dull ache in her middle by acknowledging the relief she actually felt now that her friend was no longer in pain. That part was the hardest to swallow.

Numael sighed and ran a hand through his tousled hair, his most recent apprentice was showing himself to be a bit of a slow learner. Not that the Masterharper wasn't patient, but the young man was also proving that he was stubborn and intolerant. He reached down and scratched Blue's shoulders and she looked up at him with bright eyes, "The first chance I get I'm shipping him off to the hall." He confided. Shards if the lad wasn't so damn insistent he would have dropped him entirely from his apprenticeship by now. He held the report he'd been writing on the apprentice out to Beryl, the brown flitt took it in his claws and disappeared with a flick of his wings.

He stood from his chair and stretched, sighing when his back finally popped. Blue waited patiently at the door for him to come to the door. She trotted proudly ahead of him, having grown used to the hustle and bustle of the lower caverns since she'd arrived at the weyr.

Numael grabbed her collar when they entered the dining cavern, sending the message that she was to stay by his side and not go running off. She did as she was told and dutifully followed him while he grabbed a couple of meatrolls and a glass of wine.

He was just about to settle into a seat when he spotted Muriel sitting alone with nothing but a bottle of wine for company. He immediately changed direction, his face falling when he saw her expression and the way she was holding herself. "Hey, Muriel, you alright?" He placed his food on the table, sliding in to sit beside her and wrap an arm around her. "What's wrong?" He held her tight against him, hoping that his presence would help calm her. He didn't like seeing anyone upset, let alone the woman he'd grown to care so much about. Blue seemed to catch on and she peeked her head out from under the table to lay her head on the greyrrider's knee.

Glancing up when she sensed someone nearing the table from the corner of her eye, she smiled at the Masterharper and leaned against him when he sat down. Just the person she wanted to see at a time like this. Her hand strayed down to Blue's head, scratching around the canine's ears affectionately.

"I'm fine, I'm fine. I just..." she sighed heavily. "Got some bad news in. A friend of mine died."

She waved her hand hastily, brushing away anticipated pity, "He'd been sick since before I can remember, really. It just got worse as the Turns passed and I guess it was too much finally."

Topping off her glass and pouring one for Numael, she raised hers in toast, "To Quentin, never more will you feel your pain or wash the dust of the road from yer arse." Downing a large swallow, she chuckled at the traditional use of caravan humor when toasting the dead.

"I'll miss him, but..." she shrugged. "I guess I'm... glad it's over? Over for him, his family, and the 'vanners."

Numael's eyes softened and some of the worry lifted from his features as she spoke of her friend. He let her speak, the gruffness her voice couldn't help but make him smile, still finding it amazing that dragonriders came from such varied backrounds all over Pern.

He took the offered drink and clanked it against hers, "May he rest in peace wherever he lays." He took a long swallow. The harper had often wondered what might happen to people and even creatures once they passed on. But so far his questions remained unanswered, so he just liked to think that maybe they all came back as firelizards or something, or perhaps canines like Blue.

"I'm sure he led a good life despite his sickness." He rubbed his hand across Muriel's shoulders and leaned his head against hers. "I'm so sorry." He whispers, hating to use those words. Some would believe that a harper who knew so many words and phrases might come up with something better. He never mean to pity, only to try and understand.

Muriel smiled and rubbed her cheek across his forehead affectionately, sighing a little. She slipped her arm around under his, squeezing his shoulders appreciatively. They spent a long few moments like that in a comfortable silence. Shards, she hadn't even bedded the man and she felt more comfortable around him than she did anyone else in the Weyr, a good portion of which had seen her naked after a Flight even. Odd how that worked. Briefly she wondered when Arillieth would Rise again... it would be within the next few months surely.

Shaking her head, she sat up straight and refilled their glasses, "Let's not dwell on the sadness. Lets drink to his memory, and the memory of all those who went before him. Seems the only honorable thing to do!"

She squared her shoulders and put on a bit of a comical smile before tossing back another drink, ready to get roaring drunk with the one man who seemed to understand her quiet ways better than anyone.

Numael couldn't help the sigh of contentment that escaped him in the almost too brief moments while she took comfort in his presence. He regretted not having a dragon to provide company for Arillieth but to know that the greyrider wanted to spend time with him despite his lack of a dragon, pleased him to no end. They were close sure, but he still had no idea what they were officially, and he had no intentions on pressing the issue. He'd rather have her be comfortable around him and share his company than possibly cause her to withdraw.

He kept his arm tightly around her even when she sat up and refilled their drinks, "I'm sure they'd be doing the same thing for us." He grinned and threw back his glass, inwardly cringing at the action. Wine wasn't supposed to be drank, it was supposed to be sipped but it wasn't the best Benden wine anyway so it couldn't be considered too much of a travesty.

He refilled their glasses, already feeling a slight tingle from the wine, "So what does Arillieth think of me anyway?" He couldn't help but ask. Having been living in the weyr he'd learned much about dragons but still it wasn't often that he'd gotten to interact with them. Well that was until he'd started spending so much time with Muriel and her grey, still he was curious. Arillieth spoke with him often enough, though it was usually brief comments. He hoped she didn't hold any resentment against him for not being a rider himself.

Muriel hiccuped quietly, surprising herself into chuckling and fanning herself. Good, the wine was going right to her head. Perfect. She smiled indulgently at the Harper for a moment before cocking her head at his question. Turning her head vaguely in the direction of Arilieth, who was outside lounging on the hot sand, her eyes unfocused in that characteristic way of a dragonrider who was speaking with their dragon.

I like you, Arilieth said, so both could hear her. You would have made a fine bronzerider, I think, had you had the opportunity. But you make a fine Harper and you sing very well too, which is nice.

Arilieth paused for a moment, then continued privately so only Numael could hear, And I like you because Muriel likes you, a great deal. She doesn't like many people like that, and no one quite as much as you. She finished with a tone that clearly meant "make of that what you will." The grey then withdrew her presence from Numael's mind, settling back into a comfortable doze.

Muriel cocked her head at him again, "You have that look, is Arilieth sneaking around on me again?"

Numael couldn't help the silly grin that spread across his face at the grey's words. He decided to hide his face in his cup to try and control it a bit but failed miserably, I like her too. He thought. Perhaps the grey was still listening to him or something. "Maybe she is." He reached for the wine bottle and refilled his glass to occupy himself.

Muriel wasn't like any other woman he'd ever met. She didn't care that he was a Master of his craft. As best he could tell was she only cared that he did his job and did it well. And of course she seemed to care about him, or at least he hoped she did.

He took another long drink of his wine, already feeling a slight flush cover his cheeks, "She only told me that you like me a lot." He grinned and leaned in close, nuzzling her warm cheek with his nose, allowing the alcohol to make him a little more bold and silently pleading she wouldn't be upset with her dragon.
