Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The long corridors deep underground were a welcome relief after the desert sun, even though it was only spring. Dirkallo hadn't truly noticed how long he'd been away, but it had been enough time that the contrast between Fort, where winter was just breaking, and Vaioa was a shock.

Arki chirruped, landing on his master's shoulder to rub against his cheek. The bronze was happy. They were at the home-place again, the one with nice warm sun, and he was glad to be where he knew the other firelizards. Every now and then, he had popped back to warm up from the cold-place and when something frightened him, but he didn't like to leave his master alone too long. What if he had needed help? He was going to need help soon. Arki knew this. He could feel the tenseness in the shoulders under him and felt the twisting not-quite-unhappy feelings through their weak link. But Beryl's master was good. He would not do unhappy-making-things on purpose. So he would watch and wait.

Dirk was nervous. He hoped any sweat could be attributed to his harrowing ride shortly before he arrived, and to the climate. But he anticipated all sorts of uncomfortable questions that he would rather not answer. Because in truth? He still wanted to be a dragonrider. But after what Master Gurdis had said, he knew that he was only getting his hopes up. Why would a dragon choose him anyway?

Oh well. He knew he was good at this, if he could stay focused. And he had friends here still, D'kir had just handily proved that. He screwed up his courage and knocked on the door to the Masterharper's rooms.
