Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

All right, so becoming a candidate again was a bit of a drag. She had to leave her nice little cozy place in the Lower Caverns and say goodbye to mending and working on fellis salve and watching the kids with other women. And she couldn't quite lurk around the mating flights and hope that one of those nice bronze riders wasn't scooped up before she could get there.

...Actually that competition was a drag, nevermind. Besides, the last Green flight, A'zyn had been in, and that was so awkward.

Still, chores are still a pain. At least it was midday when she was assigned to clean all the bed linens. Washing was perhaps the most annoying work of all, especially when something was stained for whatever reason.

Like that one time that girl she used to know that would get horrible nosebleeds due to the dry air. No, really. Kortni freaked out the first time she saw that poor girl with blood pouring down her face and the girl calmly explained that it was normal.

Then Kort had a good laugh and proceeded to hate her every single time she had to clean the blood from the sheets.

At least she didn't work alone. But it seemed that she didn't know the person that was to be working with her.

She gave him a quick glance over as she set the basket of linens down. "Don't think I've punched you before," she said, her tone friendly as she reached for a washboard and soap.

Terran did not know what to expect when he left home. He had been a member of the Vaioa Hold for all of his life: its buildings, its mines, its citizens, all of them he knew intimately for years. To go from so much familiarity to something so new was jarring, to say the least. But this was his calling: he had been Searched, after all. Even when he wanted to just keep his head down and stay unnoticed, he always found himself doing something more. Something greater.

In this case, however, "something greater" proved to be almost comfortable in its familiarity. Just like at home, he still had his trusted fire lizard perched on his shoulder. Just like at home, he had a roof over his head and no shortage of things to occupy himself with.

Just like at home, he was getting to work cleaning some bedsheets.

Ossum proved to be quite the help. Flits were never too intelligent, but Ossum was always clever enough to follow the simplest commands. Luckily for Terran, "help hold this" qualified. He scrubbed calmly. Not too fast, not too slow. Just like his mother had to teach him, when his siblings were too young to help around the house.

There were a lot of sheets, but he wasn't alone in cleaning them. And as the two continued to clean, he noticed her trying to strike up a conversation.

"Doubt it," he commented. "I'm new around here. What about you?" Ossum turned to her, looking a little shyly as it tottered behind Terran. While Terran was merely quiet around new people, his flit was outright bashful.

"Thought you were new," she said, a wry smile appearing on her face. She brushed some of her short hair out of her face and mentally reminded herself to get it cut later. "I grew up here. Vaoia Weyr has always been my home and always will be. Haven't been a Candidate in a while, though." The first bed linens were remarkably clean. Someone was a neat freak; Kortni'd find out who sooner or later.

"My name's Kortni. My parents are riders." Blue and green, it didn't matter; dragonmen were men apart, and it was always an honor to be near the beautiful creatures. "How about you?"

Rider kid, huh? That explained how she seemed so knowledgeable about the place. He put down the sheet he was cleaning, a little messed up but not too bad, and motioned for Ossum to hand him another one. The flit briefly poked its head out from behind Terran's leg long enough to hand him the corner of another sheet. As Terran picked it up, his nose wrinkled with disgust.

Sweat stains were the worst.

As he began to scrub, he answered his new acquaintance's question. "Terran," he replied. "Lived in the nearby Hold for as long as I could remember." He didn't feel the need to go into more details, or talk about who his parents were: in fact, the mere thought of is father caused his blood to boil slightly. In hopes of inching away from those thoughts, he decided to change the topic.

"What's it like living in a Weyr?"

"A Holder, huh? I went down there for a Gather once, though I tend to prefer the Weyr." Oh dear, this one had blood on it. Nosebleeds or just womanly things? Kortni smothered it with the lye, then set it aside to sink into the sheet. She grabbed another and continued her work.

"Dragonmen are strange," she said bluntly. "I've been around them my entire life and you can tell they're different from other men. I can't really put my finger on it, but there's just something about a rider... All of them just seem more complete than other people, if that's even a thing to say. I've been told Impression changes you. It's like a second birth. That single moment when you realize that it doesn't matter what it is before you, it's your dragon and it's perfect and it completes you. That's the moment I've wanted to experience my entire life, the moment many of the kids I grew up with experienced."

A small green nose poked out of the front of Kortni's shirt, the sign of Felicity being around. She stared a bit at Ossum and Terran, then peeped and curled back up to nap. "The Weyr revolves around the dragonmen. The Caverns exist too, but even the people down there seem to exist simply for the dragonmen. We all grew up with their morality, which I hear is different from the Hold's. Most of the girls that come in from the Holds, for instance, find me repulsive." She grinned.

"Pretty sure most Holders in general do. We're open about a lot of things here that the Holds aren't. I've heard there are Holds where women can't even speak out of turn. That's not the case in the Weyr. Here, the only differences between men and women are the dragons they get and the way they handle them. Riders of both genders are valued and given ranking positions. Our Weyr is run by a Weyrwoman and a Weyrleader, too, to symbolize how, not just the Weyr, but all of Pern needs man and woman, bronze and gold, to survive.

"And because of the dragonmen and their ways, so we adapted around them. You'll learn in time, Terran. And I'll help you with whatever you need."

After methodically cleaning out the sweat stains on this sheet, Terran moved onto his next one. However, as he took the sheet, his eyes widened as he noticed some very green-and-brown looking stains. Quickly he smothered in in lye, following Kortni's example.

Some poor, unlucky Weyr-dweller must have been ill, because that one was definitely vomited on.

As he worked, however, he found himself listening quite intently to Kortni's stories. Things did seem awfully different over there: even though his mother was always queen in the household, as soon as they stepped outside of their house's walls she was generally not treated as well as her husband or sons were. While sad, it was just a truth of Hold living, and Terran's mother always handled it in a dignified fashion. The whole family knew who REALLY held control, anyway.

When Kortni mentioned girls from the Hold finding her repulsive, Terran found himself briefly trying to imagine her fitting in with Hold society. Even though he hadn't even gotten to know her too well, the mental image nearly made him snicker.

However, the dragon part is what intrigued him the most. Complete . . . like a second birth . . . it sounded almost too good to be true. Terran always fancied himself rather stable and happy. Could there really be something missing from his life of such importance?

The brief longing he felt when Kortni mentioned the dragons answered for him.

"Thanks. Glad to know someone's here to help out the new guy," he joked, smiling a little. "Anything I should try to pick up on quickly?"

"No problem." She set aside another dripping clean sheet, then grabbed another. The amount of hair that accumulated on these things was ridiculous. She hated long hair, too. Ugh.

"For starters, dragons aren't pets. Yeah, I know, everyone knows this, but it's true. Don't ever touch a dragon without a rider's permission. And if it doesn't have a rider, stay away from it. 'Course, the only Riderless dragons are on the Sands, and they're only babies, but I've seen them maim a Candidate, or even kill him. One of my friends got mauled by a dragon. He's alive now, but man all the blood... But yeah, dragons are noble creatures and you should only touch them if a rider gives you permission."

Almost done with the basket now. She'd go out to pin them up soon. "Most Weyrfolk have bets as to who's gonna Impress what and who's gonna walk off the Sands without a dragon. Don't pay them any mind, and don't gamble. If you get caught up in it, you'll probably wind up in trouble with Merilla. Keep your pants on, too, and don't tell anything you want to keep secret to a dragon rider. Actually, that last bit of advice is something you'll want to remember. Dragonmen have a hard time keeping secrets. It's not their fault, it's the dragons. Things have spread all over the Weyr because one rider couldn't keep his mind closed from his dragon's eye and then suddenly the news was out and everyone knows. And in this Weyr, yes, it probably is everyone.

"As far as the actual Hatching goes? Get your robe and sandals fitted well before the Hatching. Nothing's more embarrassing than having clothing that fits, especially on what could be the most important day of your life." She knew that from experience. "Most of it'll be taught to you in Candidate Training, and the rest you'll learn by messing up a few times. It happens. Don't slack off, and if you do break the rules, make sure it's something you can hide, yeah?"

Terran nodded, taking in all of Kortni's advice as he continued handling sheets. Most of them were in pretty good condition, although worn and tattered from use. One was just plain ripped and torn: not sure whether scrubbing it would make things worse or not, Terran took extra-care with cleaning that one. He was nearing the end of his share, though, so he kept persevering.

The secret-keeping part struck him as a little odd, though. Of all the world's creatures that could be chatty gossips, he didn't expect dragons.

All things considered, the advice made a lot of sense to him. Keep your head down, don't screw up, and if you do try not to make it too noticeable. "I'll make sure of it," he replied, snickering a little at the idea of someone's robes falling off or clinging too tight in the middle of a Hatching.

Ossum took out a final sheet from the basket and handed it to Terran, or more accurately passed him a single corner of the sheet. He was a small flit, after all, and while he could help speed the process along he couldn't even lift a whole sheet on his own. One last scrubbing and it was finished.

"Alright, done with my batch. Ready to pin these up?" His voice and stance sounded more relaxed now. Helping clean up seemed almost therapeutic, and helped him take his mind off of his change in location.

After washing clean the last sheet, Kortni was more than ready to head out. She dried her hands on her apron then grabbed the basket and stood up. "Yeah, sure. Follow me, the lines are just outside." Out through the tunnels they went. "It's so much easier in the winter. Linens, I mean. I mean, we don't have to plan around... Well, y'know."

After the death of Trouth (the talk the Weyr for a while), not many people could talk lightly about Thread. Kortni's tone took a more serious tone when discussing it, and she wasn't a woman who discussed many things seriously. Best not to get into details.

The air was cool outside; it wasn't quite snowy in the desert but it definitely cooled off this time of year. "The line's right over there. There should be pins on it." She set down the basket and reached in her shirt, then pulled out her fire-lizard. The Green writhed in her grasp and peeped angrily, but Kortni ignored her. "Felicity, help me out. Get me some of those clothespins."

With an agitated chittering, Felicity complied, fetching a single clothespin in her tiny forearms and handing it to Kortni, who pinned up the first of many bedsheets.

"If she starts climbing on you, just shoo her away. She doesn't have a very good memory so she'll forget any anger she has in a few moments."

Cool air blew through Terran's hair as he stepped outside, placing down his basket of sheets at the other end of the line. Ossum tottered along after him, noticing the clothespins and quickly stashing a few. The flit excitedly ran up to his owner, handing him the clothespins.

"Thanks for that," he replied, smiling appreciatively and giving the little lizard a pat on the head with his finger. The two worked like a well-oiled machine, Ossum handing Terran clothespins and Terran using them to pin up sheets. To help speed the work along Ossum perched on Terran's shoulder, allowing him to help Terran without having to fly up to him all the time.

Then Ossum noticed Felicity and quickly hid behind Terran's head, causing him to laugh a little.

"Felicity, eh?" he asked, smiling at the little flit. "I'll keep that in mind. As for mine, he's named Ossum. He's . . . kinda shy." Terran lightly poked Ossum's side, spurring the brown flit to stop hiding behind his companion's head. It looked at Kortni and Felicity, shyly holding up a claw in greeting.
