Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Lesley had been given a few days to settle in to his new room in the lower caverns and get his bearings around the Weyr. But he'd been told the Headwoman would be expecting him to report for an assignment. As he'd expected, no one got a free ride in a Weyr. The thin lad was nervous as he buttoned his shirt. He didn't have any training or skills, and he was unsuited to manual labor. He wondered what she'd make him do.

He imagined she'd be a hard, old woman - strict, and unforgiving, expecting a high quality of work. He was sure she'd dislike him immediately. He;d probably be punished frequently for making mistakes or working too slowly. He sighed and slipped his shoes on, filled with dread. Scow trilled sympathetically to him and landed on his shoulder, hugging the young man's neck with his tail. Les stroked the bronze, grateful for the comfort he offered. Then, he put on his hat and headed out.

Although Les had been told to report to the Headwoman, no one had told him where to find her. He wandered the halls, meekly asking those he passed where he might find her. Most of them told him to keep searching and that he'd come across her eventually. After twenty minutes, the ex-holder still hadn't succeeded. He sighed dejectedly and continued through the halls, losing hope.

How far away are they?!
The peppermint coloured Green snuffled happily in Her's ear. "Shard It All will you give up!" Rayna snarled at the Green, waving her hand at the Fire Lizard upon her shoulder. "I do not have time for your nonsenses." The woman said sternly; knowing that the Fire Lizard would not understand the words but would at least understand the emotion in them. A small, unhappy noise left the Green's throat; she did so hate to be told off by Her's but the woman was always so busy, she never had time to just sit and hum to the Green like she had done once.

A sigh left the Headwoman's lips and she put down the scrolls she had been trying to organise, placing them neatly upon the table before her. There was a soft look in her expression as she reached up a hand and stroked Shard It Alls' head. The Green trilled happily and rubbed her head against Rayna's cheek in return. There were always moments like this for them; they could share them every so often, not always but sometimes when no one else was around. "I'm sorry love, I did not mean to yell but I have much to do today and already the newest of my staff has gone walkabouts. He is late for our meeting."

Leaving the room Rayna spotted said young man and wondered what power had sent the lost lad in her direction. She knew who he was; a Rider had pointed him out to her after his arrival and she had immediately put a face to the name and like all others it was stored within her mind. "Lesley. I am Rayna, the Headwoman here at Vaioa." She said in her usual stern tone as she strode towards him down the corridor, Shards wings spread wide to keep her balance. "Walk with me and tell me what skills you possess as well as experience."

Les jumped as the Headwoman suddenly appeared and descended upon him. Her curt questions left him stuttering and feeling foolish for a few seconds as he scrambled to fall into step beside her. Scow trilled happily to the little green on the Headwoman's shoulder as Les drew even with her.

The boy's face flushed with nerves and embarrassment. He wanted to apologize for failing to arrive when he should have, but he was afraid she would snap at him if he did anything but answer her questions.

"I can read and write," he stammered out hastily. "And I know how to prepare and preserve skins for writing. And I know my arithmetic. Some advanced arithmetic, actually. And I know a good deal about history and geography. And I'd read a lot about trade and trade-goods. I have good handwriting, and I can work a simple stitch - good enough for repairing a tear or something...um..." he trailed off, scouring his brain for anything else he could possibly offer. When he couldn't think of anything else, he added sullenly, "I think that's about all. I....I've never worked before....only studied."

He glanced over at the stern woman, hoping his meager qualifications wouldn't anger her. He also hoped she wouldn't make him scrub pots or clean latrines...He would if he had to, but he desperately hoped he was good enough to warrant a different job.

Rayna took a moment to look that lad up and down, assessing him. Her critical eye often reduced people to nought more than shivering wrecks (it was a talent she had learnt over a great many Turns and one she amused herself with more often than not). She ignored the sudden burst of happy trilling and chittering from Shard It All when the Green responded to the lad's own Bronze; they could talk all they liked, it mattered not to her anyway.

A flush went to Les' face and Rayna made a mental note to maybe start being a little less intimidating on a first meeting; it seemed that she was making people nervous before they had a chance to really know her. Not usually a problem but since she had made the conscious decision to be here at Vaioa and since she had also decided this would be her last position before retirement, or her demise whichever came first, maybe she should be a little LESS... well... herself.

As he began to speak she listened to him, her hands clasped behind her back. From the moment he began speaking she knew what she wanted from him. There was a flicker of a smile in the corners of her mouth - never the most comforting sign if you knew her, it meant that she had just had an idea and that wasn't always good depending on what mood the woman was in. He was a scholar. And he could not have come at a better time!

"I may just have the perfect job for you." She said slowly. "Follow me." She turned on a foot and strode back down the corridor the way she had come. Opening the door to the study she motioned for him to enter. Inside was chaos; a mass of parchments and scripts that had become dusty and left to all but rot. "I apologise for the mess. My master scholar has just retired; old age has finally made him realise he cannot continue with his work. You know how to prepare and preserve, you also know how to write - well here is your task my lad. Most of these skins will need to be rewritten for records. Also you will work on inventories and report to Junior Weyrwoman Senyrae; she is working on deliveries and they must also be recorded. Anything that needs to be kept for future reference will be written by you. I know it is a lot of work but it is particularly important. Do you think you are up to the task?"

Les boggled at the mess. He could smell the rot; the Headwoman was certainly right that these records needed to be seen to. But there was so much. The ex-holder couldn't help but feel a little overwhelmed. Not to mention the level of responsibility! Any mistake Lesley made could be crushing to the whole Weyr. The prospect made him fidget.

"Oh, well...." He looked up at the headwoman timidly. "I think I can, ma'am. I'll do my best."

He stepped into the room and began thumbing through a stack of skins. He frowned. "Oh dear...these aren't organized very well at all, are they? I'll get started on that right away."

He quickly cleared a place for scow to perch, and then began sorting the skins into appropriate piles.

Yes. This room really was a nightmare. Sighing heavily she looked around at the piles of rotting skins and papers. It really was going to be a challenge for the lad but at least it would keep him busy and be worth it in the end. "I do apologise for the state of the place. I understand that this is a rather big ask on my part but I promise you will have any help that you need for this task." Was she being mean for giving him such a daunting task? She supposed she was in a way but it was something that needed to be done did it not? He had said that he was more a scholar than a labourer and this was really the only place she could put him to work, that and it was a job that was in need of doing.

"No I'm afraid they are not. I shall fetch a jug of Klah and return to help you. I like to get to know my new staff when they first arrive." She nodded to him and headed back out towards the kitchen. "Well Shards it looks like he'll be comfortable in there. Hm?" She stroked the Green's head absent-mindedly. Entering the kitchen she watched the ebb and flow of her workers for a moment; such organisation compared to the chaos she had first arrived to. A snort of happiness at this and then she set to finding what she had come for. Placing food and a jug of Klah onto a tray with plates and cups the woman balanced it easily on one hand as she moved through the busy kitchen back to the Records Room.

Entering the room the woman sighed as she looked for somewhere to put the tray down. Shifting some of the papers she set it down gently. "What made you come to Vaioa Lesley?" She asked.

Lesley carefully arranged a pile of skins into a neat stack, careful not to damage any of the dryer, brittler ones. He continued to work as he answered, ignoring the arrival of klah.

"My friend Hanalei was Searched and asked me to come with her, so I did."

The young man knit his brow with concentration as he regarded what was left of the mess on top of the desk in front of him. He continued to gather them into neat stacks, hoping to clear a space where he could begin organizing things. He all but forgot Rayna was there as he began to do so, absorbed in his organizing. When all the skins on the desk were straightened out he cleared a place and began sorting the skins by Turn, making a new pile each time he encountered a new date until he ran out of room.

Scow, completely disinterested in his person's activities, fluttered over to Rayna's tray. He warbled quietly to himself and sniffed happily at the food, trying to decide what to sample first.
