Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

How far away are they?!
The Green burst from Between with a happy bugle to announce she had arrived. Lazily circling above the Weyrbowl she allowed her passengers time to gaze upon the Weyr - it was the first time both Rider and the woman they had brought with them had ever been to Vaioa and the Green had been instructed to take a little time to allow the woman to view it without being disturbed. After what seemed to the Green as the appropriate amount of time to remain in the air she began to descend, wings spread wide as she began to glide downwards. Landing gracefully she turned her head to look at her Rider and their passenger; the woman was a funny thing, always scowling.

Her Rider jumped to the ground and offered his hand to the woman who took it without a word. Stepping onto the ground the woman cast her deep brown eyes around herself and said, "Mmm." under her breath.
"There you go Rayna. Home sweet home." The Greenrider said with a grin upon his face, watching the woman's reaction.
"Mmm." She repeated, not meeting his eyes.

J'lon had to force himself not to laugh at her. Rayna was well known throughout Pern; the woman had been sought by nearly every Hold, Hall and Weyr, each sending their own individual requests to her asking for her to become their Headwoman. Some she had taken, most she had refused, but of those she had agreed to all were satisfied and working in the same way as she had left them. This, however, was unusual for two reason. First, Rayna had never ever agreed to be Headwoman for a Weyr and second (and most importantly) Rayna had put in the request herself. The Greenrider busied himself with getting the woman's things while watching her out of the corner of his eye. Never had he met a woman like her, quiet and stern looking and almost always scowling. Grinning he put her bags by her feet and clasped his hands together loudly to bring her attention back to him. "So want me to come with you?"
"No. Thank you. I will be quite alright on my own." Came the reply as the woman bent and picked up what little belongings she had brought with her. She noted the look of disappointment on his face, clearly her reputation had preceded her and he had been anticipating watching her as she made her introductions and naturally created enemies within minutes of walking into the Caverns, but she was not here to create a show for others, she was here to work.

She nodded to the man and handed him a mark for good measure. "Thank you for bringing me here. I will go the rest of the way on my own."
"Oh. Ok. Thanks Rayna. Enjoy yourself here won't you?" He called after her, bursting into hysterics as she answered him with a simple, "Mmm."

Upon her shoulder sat a mint Green Fire Lizard, the little creatures eyes zipping back and forth as she took in their new home. She shifted restlessly from one foot to the other, chittering away in Rayna's ear constantly. The extremely tall woman stepped into the Lower Caverns and looked around herself. She had never been to Vaioa but she knew it's layout - she had spent a great deal of time studying blueprints she had acquired not so long ago. It was always best to be prepared. Striding inside she put her bags down at a table and looked around. The staff watched her with interest as she moved around, opening cupboards and store rooms, sniffing and continuing to say, "Mmm." as she went. Whispers went around her as everyone watched her, who was she? What in Faranth's name was she doing?

All of this she ignored. She was taking stock of everything. Best to familiarise herself with it all now so that she could just get on with her job. The Green chirped loudly in her ear and Rayna looked at her. Yes. Best introduce herself before this lot became too suspicious. Turning to face everyone, since they were all looking directly at her, she spoke. "My name is Rayna. I am your new Headwoman. Would you please inform the Weyrleaders of my arrival."

Word had spread all throughout the lower caverns like a wild fire. The kitchens were abuzz with low conversation, all about the same thing. Rumor had it that Vaioa was finally getting another Headwoman and that she was arriving today. Nerilan had heard the name "Rayna" mentioned once or twice and could only assume that she was the new Headwoman. Nerilan had never heard of her before - surely lots of women were named Rayna - but some of the older women seemed to know her.

Well, in any case, Nerilan was excited. It was about time Vaioa got a Headwoman. Surely, it would make Weyrwoman Rhyssone's job easier, as well as Arley's. She quite looked forward to meeting the woman, but went on with work as usual. She might take a break to meet the woman once she arrived, but for now, she had a job to do.

It was when murmurs began rippling throughout the kitchens that Nerilan grew curious and couldn't resist the temptation to leave her post. Peering outside into the hall, where many of her coworkers hovered, she caught sight of a tall, stern-looking woman going through cupboards and peeping into storage cabinets, a small green firelizard perched on her shoulder.

Any questions about the identity of the woman were quelled when she introduced herself. Oho, Nerilan thought, briefly appraising the woman. So this was the new Headwoman. One of the women beside her nodded and swept up her skirts, striding briskly to go find the Weyrleaders. Nerilan watched her go, then turned her eyes back on Rayna.

A sudden trill over her shoulder made Nerilan jump, and before she could respond, Salera darted past her in a green blur, making a beeline for the mint green on Rayna's shoulder. She zipped around Rayna's head in two full circles, then hovered by the new green, chittering wildly and happily. A new friend!

Nerilan, however, was horrified. "Salera, behave!" she cried, stepped forward. Salera chirped and circled Rayna again, not understanding what she was doing wrong. She was just being friendly!

With her hands folded in front of her Rayna looked around herself, taking in the place where she would be working. Her first Weyr; this would be interesting. Holds and Halls were all well and good but the challenges were all the same for her now, she had worked with so many of their kitchens that nothing really surprised her. A Weyr on the other hand offered her challenges that she had not yet faced and this, this was why she had asked for Vaioa. Or at least that was what people knew anyway, whether Rayna had other motives for taking a Weyr for her latest post or not was known only to her.

One woman nodded to Rayna at her announcement and immediately scurried away to find the Weyrleaders and let them know that their new Headwoman had finally arrived. It must have been a relief to them, to know that finally someone had come to relieve them of some of the duties they probably saw as mediocre and trivial. Brushing at her skirts Rayna watched the other kitchen staff, raising an eyebrow to them, questioning why they were all just stood about doing nothing in particular other than staring at her. So it was that Rayna's reign had begun - stand about and you might dace her wrath.

A trill alerted the woman to the arrival of another Green and she turned her head to one side, watching as the Fire Lizard flew directly towards her. Her eyes followed the path of the Fire Lizard as she flew around her head and a twitch flickered across the corner of the woman's mouth, whether it was a smile of amusement or a grimace of annoyance was unknown - it hadn't lasted long enough to tell. Her gaze continued to remain on the Fire Lizard as she hovered by her shoulder, trilling and chatting to Shard It All who had been hopping excitedly from one foot to another from the moment the call of greeting had come. Chittering away at the other Green the mint coloured Fire Lizard stood on her back legs, flapped her wings and let out her own version of the bugle the Green Dragon had given when she had arrived.

Rayna coughed, looked at the girl who had run forward to claim this rogue hovering around Rayna's head. "Yours I believe?" She said in her usual stern tone. "Do not worry. She is not being a nuisance." Rayna said, looking to her own Green and shrugging her shoulder to dislodge Shards into the air. "I have my own nuisance who is much worse." She stated, watching the clumsy Green plummet from her shoulder for a moment before gaining air. Rolling her eyes at her useless companion she sighed and turned to the girl. "And what is your name?" She asked.

With Salera ignoring her, so wrapped up in the new firelizard that she was, Nerilan turned her wide eyes on Rayna, scrutinizing her response to see if she could get any idea of the degree to which the new Headwoman would be furious. The woman kept her expression neutral, though Nerilan caught the corner of her mouth twitch - in annoyance?

Nerilan nodded slowly at Rayna's question to confirm her ownership of the flit in question, cringing inwardly at the stern tone; what a wonderful first impression to make, as a girl who couldn't discipline her firelizard enough to make her behave. But Rayna's next words surprised her. Nerilan straightened, a little shocked that she was off the hook, but pleased that Rayna understood the difficulties that came with owning a firelizard.

Well, as long as she wasn't going to get in trouble, there was no reason for her to cower. Rayna seemed nice enough! Nerilan gave a cheeky grin. "M'name's Nerilan," she answered brightly. "Welcome to Vaioa!"

Rayna continued to watch the two Fire Lizards together for a moment, her dark eyed gaze following as Shard It All danced in the air with her new friend. For all of her clumsiness (and there was a lot of it) Shards was rather graceful and beautiful once she was in the air... so long as there was enough space for her aerobatics of course and the kitchen was not usually the place for it...

Nerilan. The name was immediately stored away and saved against an image of girl's face - Rayna never forgot a person she had met, not once in her entire life. "Thank you Nerilan." She said, nodding to the girl. It was nice to be welcomed she supposed. "What is your role here at Vaioa?" She asked curtly. Motioning with a hand for the young woman to follow her she moved through the kitchens. Hands clasped behind her back Rayna inspected the facilities with a critical eye. There was much that would need to be done here before she was satisfied with the running of these kitchens and halls.

As they went deeper into the kitchens there was a colossal 'CLANG!' that stopped Rayna in her tracks. With a sigh the woman closed her eyes and took a deep breath; would that ridiculous Fire Lizard of her's never learn! "Shard It All!" She roared angrily, turning around and glaring at the Green who had just flown headlong into a pan and was now lying on the floor in a dizzy heap. Already kitchen workers were moving to inspect what had happened. "Back to work! You will soon get used to her antics and you will soon realise that she does that more often than is normal... or that I would like." She muttered. "Shard It All come HERE." Rayna scolded, lifting her arm to indicate the Green needed to return.

"Nerilan if ever your Fire Lizard seems like an undisciplined menace to you please take Shards for a day and you'll learn to appreciate what a gem your little Green is."

Gathering up her skirts, Nerilan followed Rayna, hurrying to keep up with the tall woman's long strides. "My role?" Well, she did a lot of things. She didn't really have a specific role. "I just work in the kitchens. I'll help prep meals, or I'll serve people out in the Dining Hall, or I'll do the dishes. I usually help make the bubbly pies." She paused, trying to think of anything else worth mentioning. "I guess I do whatever needs to be done." She looked up at Rayna and shrugged helplessly, smiling.

She flinched at the loud clang and searched for the source of the noise. Her hazel eyes locked on to the Headwoman's green. She frowned; hopefully the firelizard was alright. But Rayna was shouting at the workers and Nerilan cringed inwardly at her tone, even though it was not directed at her.

You'd think such a sought-after Headwoman would be able to train her firelizard, she couldn't help but think to herself. But maybe that was an unfair judgement; Nerilan knew how silly firelizards could be.

"Oh. Okay." The smile returned to her face and she chuckled. Well, luckily, Salera was usually very well behaved. Usually.

A question to a question. Rayna sighed inwardly. She had a pet hate for this mimicking nonsense. Why did people not just understand a question when it was asked of them? Why did they feel the need to repeat the question back as though it was difficult to understand? "Yes. Your role." Rayna said quietly, reigning in her own emotions. She had only just arrived to the Weyr and the last thing she wished to do was alienate people right from the word go... there was plenty of time for that later.

Listening to Nerilan's answer Rayna nodded. "Very good. So you can be put to work within the kitchen without the worry of not knowing what to do. Is there a task that you particularly enjoy or feel that you are best at? Or is there something that you wish to learn within the kitchens and Caverns?" Now here was a question that had stalled many a person in their tracks. What did it matter what someone wanted to do in a kitchen? Well it mattered to Rayna - if her workers enjoyed their tasks then they worked even harder. It was a simple enough theory and it had worked within her Caverns before.

A small smile flickered to Rayna's face as Nerilan laughed and there was a moment where she looked almost human in nature. "Give her a clear space and she can dance in the air beautifully. Stick her in a confined space and she crashes into everything... no distance perception whatsoever." Rayna sighed, stroking the Green's head in an exasperated but fond manner.

Nerilan laughed at Rayna's observation. Well of course she knew what she was doing! She'd been working in these kitchens for a while now, so she was familiar with how they worked. Not much really changed from day to day. But Nerilan checked herself, realizing belatedly that it probably wasn't a good idea to laugh in her new Headwoman's face.

"Yes, I know my way around these kitchens," she confirmed with a smile. Rayna's following question made her pause for a moment. No one had really asked her what she liked to do before. Her answer came easily, though. "I like to do the baking, and frankly, that's what I'm best at," Nerilan explained. "But I'm open to doing anything in the kitchens or lower caverns. Wherever I'm needed is fine, I suppose." She shrugged, smiling softly.

Oh, was that a hint of a smile Nerilan saw? She was glad to see it. Rayna seemed authoritative and industrious, which would be good for Vaioa, but shards it could be hard to work with people without humor. Nerilan had chafed under the headwoman at home for that very reason. But Rayna seemed like she would be alright. "Well, she sure is cute," she remarked, peering at the Headwoman's tiny green.

There was another cheek twitch which could have been a smile as Nerilan laughed but it only lasted a second. She was not annoyed, not really, it was nice to see that the girl had the gall if nothing else. Rayna enjoyed seeing that people were happy in their jobs and that they were in fact proud of what they did - Nerilan laughing at her meant that the girl was proud of what she knew and thought it silly to think that she knew nothing; not a bad trait in Rayna's mind. Looking at the girl she realised something rather sad - that she was a potential Candidate. Rayna had lost many a good worker to searches and while she was no expert she could spot potential a mile off. Why had the girl not been Searched by now? Or were the Riders here getting lazy at looking within their own Halls?

A good answer. Good. The girl knew what she liked and knew what she had a talent for. False modesty was pointless. "Good, then you shall be put to baking as your primary task. You see Nerlian it is my belief that people should do what they are best at and what they enjoy. While you may have to do other duties to ensure the kitchen runs as it should there is no reason for you not to do what you like. If baking is what you enjoy and what you are most skilled in then it makes more sense that you take up the task rather than have someone else do it when they are better at cooking meats or preparing tubers. For example." She stated simply.

"Thank you, she is isn't she? I do love her but I wish she had a brain in that head of hers." Rayna sighed softly, stroking Shards lovingly. "Watcher! Seeker!" She called and suddenly a Blue and a Brown descended from the rafters to settle upon her shoulders also. "My other companions, far smarter than Shard It All as well." She snorted.
