Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Maylina- tag Risari, Sorindeeth- tag the dragons

Maylina had slipped in late, reluctant to attend the lesson at all. She knew that learning self defense was necessary for her future as a dragonrider, but she had no idea how to fight and she didn't want to make a fool of herself. In the past, a sharp word or maybe some hair pulling was all she needed to deal with conflict. Now, she apparently had to know how to handle a knife and a whole bunch of other technical things.

She looked around, wondering who to pair up with. Her eyes fell on Risari, a short, skinny girl. Their builds couldn't have been more different, but T'ian had only mentioned height. Besides, the girl didn't look very strong, and Maylina would rather not challenge herself. "Hey, want to be partners?" she asked Risari. "I know I'm a little taller than you, but I have no idea what I'm doing."

Sorindeeth was much more enthusiastic than his rider, skipping his way over to the other dragons. I wanna play! he announced, flailing into their midst. He wasn't completely sure what was happening, but running was fun!

Freyia : Tag Kythe

Dare is good about letting me know the moment he is even slightly itchy. Sometimes I think it's more because he wants to go splash. She answered with an amused smile. She hadn' realized how much care and attention young dragons required. The first few months had been consumed with feeding and bathing her brown, and when he slept so did she. Slowly though the time between baths and feedings was increasing, giving her a little more freetime.

"Oh yes I would like that very much!" The Brown answered happily, rousing from a half doze. "Mine I am going to go sit in the sun with Trith. Alright love, just be sure to behave yourself and don't wander off. A few minutes later the light hued Brown was bounding toward his Green clutchmate. "Hello Trith! This is a great idea, then sun feels very nice today. The Brown settled himself beside the Green with just a bit of scuffling to find the perfect position.

Freyia wrinkled her nose, she didn't like the thought of needing to defend herself. The idea of someone wanting to harm a rider was distasteful and a little frightening. Everyone knew if a rider died or even if they were seriously injured their dragon would go between. She smiled bravely at Kythe, "I'm sure it's just a precaution. I don't think anyone in their right mind would harm a rider. She answered trying to reassure herself as much as her friend. "Well I wouldn't want to beat a boy in front of the everyone. Poor guy would never live it down. She joked.

Karen: Tag Tiael
Kari: Tag K'mor

Karen beamed at K'mor as he came over. "No, she's fine," she reassured K'mor with a little grin. She then gave Kari a little wink and turned away. Tiael was coming over, and seemed willing to be her partner. She grinned again.

"Alright!" Her expression changed, but only slightly, when Tiael asked her question. She smirked a little bit mischievously. "Formal sparring? No." Well, if Karen was being completely honest, she hadn't done too much informal sparring for that matter. She'd roughhoused a bit with some of the guys-- rarely would any girls come out and play with them, being too intent on building up proper sharding reputations in the hopes of marrying up-- but Karen had hit the tunnels and paths of Keroon more than once, and scuffles were pretty common. It had been easy, as long as she didn't get caught... her parents didn't mind what she did as long as she stayed out of everyone's hair, but that didn't mean they wouldn't have had to try to save face if Karen had ever outright done anything improper. Still, though, Karen was scrappy in her own right. Even if she didn't have experience with sparring she wasn't about to go down easy.

Realizing Tiael had begun stretching, Karen began to do the same, imitating the copperrider half the time but doing other motions and holding out her limbs, touching her toes, gently stretching out her muscles.

Kari's eyes went wide as K'mor came over and Kari sent her a secret wink and walked away. This was a bad idea, she just knew it... She looked over at K'mor who, fair enough, was her height. But he was much more muscular than her. Taking care of a green dragon might be hard work, but she had vestiges of her willowy, curvy form, and not all that many muscles. K'mor also had a mean and intimidating air about him, or else Kari was just imagining it. She managed a small squeak and nodded once as he spoke to her.

"N-no, you're not scary," she lied in a petrified tone of voice. Sharding shells and shards, why would Karen do it to her? Surely Karen knew that Kari didn't know the first thing about sparring or defending herself?

"What? G-go easy on me?" Kari was barely keeping her panic from emerging and she began swinging her arms back and forth. "Um, I wouldn't... wouldn't want you to," she said weakly.

Zelle - Tag: K'tahl

She had spotted a few others that were about her height but truth be told Zelle wasn't sure who she'd want to spar with. Course the decision was made for her when a familiar face approached her. Ah, K'tahl. The weyrling with the slightly snobbish and pushy grey. Well...to be nice one could say she's just ambitious but Zelle went with her own description. Course the rider had always seemed like a nice guy. Jenaveth would argue that his dragon was nice to you just have to tolerate how she acts sometimes. Her garnet was just too nice sometimes...Rubbing the back of her neck she gave the boy a smirk. "Yeah sure. Guess you're close enough to my height eh?"

Chuckling she glanced over at Tiael and twitched slightly seeing her pair up with someone else. In the back of her mind Jen was huffing at her emotions and Zelle shook her head to clear it. The small burst of emotion an unwelcome one as she tried to focus. She started to stretch to get ready. "Have you ever sparred before?" Zelle asked curiously wondering if she would have to go easy on this guy or not.

Now that most of the weyrlings had paired off and begun their stretches (and verbal battering, some of them), T'ian mentally referred to his lesson plan. It was essential that every rider knew the ins and outs of hand to hand combat, lest a holder get too uppity and decide to be violent. He was less concerned with the handling of a blade, and more focused on defensive maneuvers. Quickly, he scanned the crowd of weyrlings, eyes picking out one of the remaining loners.

D'kir of Tanohth. Kyzzith supplied, peering at his rider's thoughts inquisitively. It was always interesting when T'ian did the self defense lessons. All of the action and noise was somewhat intimidating, though.

"D'kir, with me, please," T'ian called out, voice sharp so that he could be heard.

"Our first movement that we'll be learning is how to block properly. From there, we will advance to a motion that will both move you out of harm's way and disarm your opponent. I will remind you that while we are practicing here today you are to have respect and courtesy for your partner. Do not strike too hard or with intent to harm."

His eyes flickered briefly to some of the older male weyrlings, though particularly lingered on K'mor and Kari. He would be watching that pair carefully.

"Watch in particular where I place my feet. Proper stance will ensure that you don't go toppling over when you make contact." Deliberately and slowly, he placed his right foot in front of his left at about a shoulder's width apart, sliding his back foot behind and out to the side. "Make sure that your back foot isn't in line with your front. You want to be evenly balanced, not like you are trying to walk on a rope."

Once the class had emulated his stance, he raised his arms, bringing his fists to chest level, fingers loosely curled. "This movement is a quick one. When your assailant is coming at you, shift your feet backwards. Some prefer to hop, others step back and reform. At the same time that you are shifting backwards, raise the arm that mirrors the arm your attacker is striking with. Swiftly, knock their arm aside with the side of your forearm."

He crooked a finger at D'kir, falling into stance facing the bronze weyrling. "Come at me as if to strike me. I will block your strike, then go back into the proper stance."

Once that had been done, T'ian turned back to face his class. "Do it 10 times each on both sides to practice blocking with both your dominant and nondominant arms. Once the first partner has done that, switch. I will be watching your forms."

Karen: Tag Tiael

After they were done stretching, T'ian began instructing them once more. Karen listened intently. Having never had any proper training, she was eager to learn as best she could.

On the one hand, blocking didn't sound that effective. On the other hand, though, Karen did realize it would be useful to know, even if at the time she didn't directly see herself using it. But if she somehow ended up in a situation where she was hopelessly overpowered, then knowing defense would be useful.

"You can block first," Karen told Tiael and moved forward as if to punch her, but not intending to hurt her. The copperrider's arm came up to block her effectively. Karen watched her with avid interest, repeating the movement and in turn being blocked. Well, one thing was sure, Tiael had at least as much of an idea of what to do as Karen. Still, by making Tiael go first, Karen was able to observe her and try to figure out how to do what T'ian had said. His instructions were clear enough but she wanted to make double sure she knew what to do, and watching Tiael do it before she did it would help her.

Tiael seemed to be just as good with her dominant hand as her nondominant one, and although Karen wasn't particularly trying to land a blow, she had the sense that she may not be able to if she did try.

Kari: For K'mor

Kari listened to T'ian with the intensity of a drowning person clinging to a life preserver. She assumed K'mor would rather strike first, or at least, she didn't know how she'd go about striking him and letting him go. She glanced around to see how other people were doing, and tried to adopt the stance he'd described. His instructions seemed clear enough but her body felt awkward and clumsy, lacking the natural flow of his movements.

"..Alright," she told K'mor uncertainly. She just had to step back and knock his arm away when he came at her? I can do this, she told herself, trying to ignore how petrified she was.

K'mor tag: Kari

K'mor had a moment of worry for the girl, he wasn't much for the wounded wherry look but this girl screamed it. She just did not look, or for that matter, acted like someone that should be dealing with sparing, let alone have a dragon. Though the deed was already done and Kari would be stuck with the Weyr for the rest of her life, he might as well leave her fate to chance. He would not go easy on her, there was no reason to, they were there to learn and he would help teach her that. Dragonriding was no game and there were things they had to do that might not be what they were used to, but there was no turning back now.

The girl had a way about her that he disliked, she sounded fearful and he had to wonder if she was always like this. K'mor listened to what T'ian wanted them to do, it was simple enough and the newer people to sparing would probably like to learn to block first. Since he had a good idea of what he was doing K'mor was sure kari needed the practice more then he did. He watched her get into the stance that was shown, she seemed unsure of herself. "I will strike first, you block. I'll move slow at first and then when you got it I'll strike fast and hard."

K'mor did just as he said, moving slow so she could get an idea of how to block and then he picked up the pace. Hopefully they could get through this lesson without much of a problem.

(::) (::) (::) ...mmm cookies.
Tiael listened quietly to the lesson plan, musing that while initially boring, it probably wasn't the best idea to let the class start hitting each other over the head just yet. Some would be way too eager and some would be terrified. At least this way, they'd stand a chance of deflecting hits. To hear that Karen hadn't done any formal sparring either was a comfort, she doubted anyone would recognise half of her 'moves' as most of them in the past were reduced to whatever seemed like it would get her opponent knocked down so she could get away. Hardly anything worth shouting about.

Hearing the rather decisive way Karen spoke, Tiael raised an eyebrow but complied. She raised her arms, curling her elbows up in front and moving aside the 'hits' Karen was aiming at her. They weren't very fast, and meant she could block with ease so instead, she focused on getting the movements more precise and hoping it would become natural. It certainly seemed more effective than general flailing.

Feeling confident, Tiael grinned. "Speed it up a little and then we'll switch." She said cheerfully, liking that the movements were becoming more fluid with each successive round. She blocked five of the faster hits with each arm in turn and then shook her limbs out, bouncing onto her toes for a moment. "Well that seems be easy, lets give you a whirl. We'll start out slow and if you want to try something faster let me know."

Tiael smiled, and began to strike at Karen. Slow, without much force, but these movements came a lot more easily. She'd preferred to get at her opponent before she had to resort to flailing and so hitting things, was a little more familiar. Watching as Karen blocked the hits, she smiled. Perhaps she would get a good mornings workout afterall.

Karen: Tag Tiael

Karen shot Tiael a grin as they sped up and the girl continued to block nicely with the actions T'ian had told them. Now she was beginning to feel like an oaf. Striking at Tiael once was ok, but doing it over and over made her realize she wasn't completely sure if she was doing that part right, either. Maybe he'd tell them the proper form for striking in a second.

She was growing exerted by the time Tiael switched with her.

I just put my feet here, Karen told herself. And step back, and bring my arm up, like she just did. She imitated the way Tiael had moved, doing a little step back and reforming her feet, and then bringing her arm up in a kind of side-swiping motion. Tiael was going slowly and Karen wasn't moving fuildly or gracefully, but she seemed to get the hand of it after they tried a few times. Even when they stiched to nondominant hands, Karen caugth on quickly. "Let's go a little faster," Karen said. She figured this was a move they should practice a lot, until it felt natural, and she needed to keep repeating it until that happened.

Kari: Tag K'mor

Kari felt very silly and suddenly overly aware of her own body. Was she holding her elbows out too far? Too close to her body? Should she bend her knees more? SHe barely had time to shuffle back as K'mor came at her, and she was late in knocking his blow aside. Luckily he had done his first punch very slow so that she knew it was coming. Even so, knocking it aside stung her forearm. Granted, it faded quickly. And was probably less painful than being punched. But Kari wasn't used to pain in the slightest, even if it was only small pain, and she bit her cheek to keep from wincing, and repeated the blocking motion every time K'mor came at her. She had the impression if she showed further weakness, he would refuse to continue practicing with her... and although Kari wasn't comfortable with this lesson anyway, she couldn't afford to be partnerless.

She noticed that he started to pick up the pace and tried not to panic. Step back with both feet, make sure they were still planted wide with one in front of the other, and then swing her arm as he punched at her. She felt like she was starting to get the hang of it, but slowly, and leaned back slightly as K'mor came on faster and with more strength behind his punches.

She wasn't sure what happened next. Maybe when she took a step back as K'mor came at her, she misstepped. Maybe he was coming too fast. Either way, she wasn't able to get her hand up in time, and his hand connected hard with her shoulder. Already off balance, the movement sent her falling backwards. Everything happened too fast for her to react and the next thing she knew, pain was exploding in her shoulder, she couldn't seem to breathe, and her eyes were swimming involuntarily as her stomach roiled and she tried not to retch.

Wimp, maybe. Truth was, Kari just wasn't used to pain; she'd lived a sheltered holder's life before being Searched, and although she'd worked hard, she'd never really had to endure physical pain. Kari glanced down at her arm and immediately wished she hadn't; she looked away quickly, struggling to keep it down. She didn't think she'd broken anything, but her arm was laying on the floor at an angle she'd never seen before, and her shoulder was blazing with fiery agony. She still couldn't seem to breathe, as she'd been winded when she'd fallen, apparently only catching her weight on her shoulder. She made a quiet, odd choking sound as she tried to draw breath and failed to do so. The pain was so intense. She curled inward, folding her good arm across her stomach helplessly. Seliath was roaring in the back of her mind but it only increased her pain, and her eyes flickered shut briefly.

Perhaps he should have paid more attention to the lessons back at the hold. His eldest brother had been considered quite a duelist. Ah well, he would just have to do the best he could. K’tahl hadn’t spent much time with Zelle. The girl seemed to hang around Tiael most of the time. There could be something to be said of that…he supposed. A fine garnetrider and copperrider making nice with each other. Could just be friendship, he was no authority on relationships, but Zelle did seem a bit disheartened being separated from her friend. Looking back over his shoulder K’tahl spared a glance for his own friends. It would’ve been nice to spar with the mild D’kir. Probably wouldn’t make him work all too much, well, he hoped he would be able to convince D’kir not to take it too seriously. D’kir is no fool. You would practice. I’m not letting you get out of this.

K’tahl crossed his arms in silent defiance to her claims as he listened to their teacher explain what they would be doing. He watched with only half a glance, they couldn’t be doing anything too advanced. Sure he would know at least these steps. While ignoring T’ian he turned to glance to where K’mor hard wandered off. Hmm, seemed he chosen to pair up with that Kari girl after. Really though? K’mor needed a tough partner. Maybe that L’harl dude. He chuckled to himself, L’harl was a tall guy, maybe he wanted to see the smaller K’mor knock him down just for kicks. Blinking he turned back to T’ian’s demonstration only to find that it had been concluded.

Mind recalling Zelle’s earlier question he grinned and dropped into what he remembered as some kind of ‘ready stance’. Legs bent, one foot a little further back, and standing perpendicular to the enemy. Happy with that he edged her on, with his hands, “Oh yeah, plenty of times. Hold kids always knocking each other right? My brother was a good teacher.” He put up his arms in self defense, Zelle might look tough, but she couldn’t really hurt him could she? Smiling once more he peeked out from behind his arms, “We don’t need to go all lazy and slow like, let’s get these ten strikes out of the way quick, c’mon I’m ready for ya.”

Yalyth watched in silence, nodding at any of the ‘rules’ that were offered up. The game seemed simple indeed. Run away from the one that was it. Easy enough. Listening as Rileth explained once more. Well it was only far that the young bronze got to pick the chaser first. Snorting with agreement at the conclusion she flicked her tail and awaited his decision. The flouncy bronze wiggled up to Oceth and immediately took off. For a moment Yalyth wondered if the game would begin so quickly like that. What no more rules or recommendations? How where they organize and learn from this? But the urgent need to get away from the chaser quickly dashed those thoughts away. Yalyth didn’t feel like being caught first. So after a confused paused she immediately dashed hopped away, running the only way a hatchling could.
