Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

D'kir and Tanohth - tag K'mor, Rileth, K'tahl, Yalyth

D'kir finally finished scrubbing Tanohth's back and jumped down into the water. There was more and more of the bronze every day, he had a hard time keeping up with the growth spurts. Tanohth was a monster already, and he would only get bigger, a thought that both made him swell with pride and deflate with dread. If it took this long to clean him now...

As the pair stepped outside and the bronze fanned his wings to dry them, D'kir glanced up at the sun and cursed, "Shaffit... I'm late!"

Late for what? Tanohth trotted after his rider as D'kir took off at a run toward the Lower Caverns.

The self-defense lesson is starting... I didn't realize it had taken so long to clean you!

I am sorry. Maybe the teacher will not be mad? Tanohth's eyes whirled apologetically and D'kir chuckled.

It's ok big guy.

D'kir skidded into the room just as T'ian was beginning his speech with instructions and he sighed with relief. Not late, quite. He inserted himself into the group, quietly slowing his breath and wiping sweat from his brow. Glancing about, he quickly masked a grimace as he realized he was standing near K'mor. That boy was trouble. It wasn't that D'kir didn't like him, he just didn't like his attitude. He was sure there was some good inside his fellow bronzerider, but D'kir just didn't understand K'mor's mindset... and that nagged at him. When T'ian finished by saying they should pick partners, D'kir sighed and turned to K'mor. Maybe this would be an opportunity to clear the air between them.

"K'mor, want to partner up?" as he sized the other lad up, he spotted K'tahl nearby as well and blushed slightly, waving shyly before clearing his throat and turning back to K'mor. The other bronze weyrling was bulkier than he, and taller too by a couple of inches, but he didn't think he had too much of a disadvantage.

Outside, Tanohth trotted over to his clutchmates, warbling a friendly greeting, Hello! Are you playing a game? May I join? His eyes whirled with a friendly greeting to Yalyth in particular. He liked her, she had more drive than any of his other brothers or sisters.

Tis the season for santa dragons
Freyia : Tag Kythe

Freyia nodded in return to K’tahl's greeting. Her eyes widened a bit at his remark to their instructor. Well he was young, but surely he wouldn't have been selected to teach them unless he knew what he was doing. Freyia didn't know much about fighting, practically nothing. She hadn't even realized that dragonrider might have to defend themselves from an attack. Her thoughts came to a halt as a a familiar figure approached. "Hello Kythe, how's Trith doing? Darenth is growing like a weed. I swear he does it in his sleep. I had no idea we'd have to learn how to defend ourselves. What sort of person would attack a dragonrider, but I guess it's better to be safe than sorry."

Freyia quieted as the serious looking youngman rose and began to speak. Her eyes widened slightly as he explained what they would be doing. After directing them to pair up Freyia turning for a slightly forced smile to Kythe. "How about it, like to be my partner? I don't really fancy getting paired with on of the boys, they probably wouldn't like it much either." She finished with a soft laugh.

Zelle - Tag: Tiael & Whoever is brave enough to pair up with her tall arse.

She was looking around at everyone else that was arriving and couldn't help the small smirk seeing Tiael among them. The other girl seemed rather energetic for this lesson which was good. This would require some energy. Zelle certainly felt like bouncing with how excited she was to get started but she kept her feet on the ground and watched calmly. When the copperrider stood next to her and spoke Zelle chuckled lightly before crossing her arms with a smirk on her face. "Oh I think I could take you. The question would be could YOU handle ME?" She asked in a teasing tone with a glint of amusement in her own eyes.

Before she add anything else to her words the Weyrlingmaster was instructing them to pair up. Her first thought was to pick Tiael but when he added someone of their own height she huffed. Shards. Tiael was nowhere near her height. Rubbing her neck she gave Tiael an almost sad smile before looking around. It seemed everyone was already jumping to pair up with others...leaving Zelle a bit vexed. There wasn't that many weyrlings in her class that were her height so picking a partner was a bit difficult especially when they already pair up with others.

Grumbling she turned her head this way and that looking but finally just huffed again before turning to the teacher with a slight shrug to say she didn't know who to pick. She still would just prefer to pair with someone she knew like Tiael but if she had to be the same height then that was out of the question.

[OOC: Crappy post is crappy. But its there.]

As Seliarth licked a bloody smear of meat off her cheek, Kari leaned back against the cliff face and sighed. Nearby, Ienirth was finishing his meal as well. The blue was larger than Seliarth but not by much, about 3 feet at the shoulder where Seliarth had now crossed 2 feet, and in length over 11 feet to Seliarth's 10. Ienirth would probably grow up larger, but not by much; the two had had very similar growth rates thus far and Kari thought it seemed likely to continue.

Now that the older Weyrlings were old enough to hunt on their own and had moved out of the Barracks into their own weyrs, the daily carcasses were all for Mercury to share. Even so, Kari would be glad when their dragons were old enough to hunt, in two more months. Chopping up carcasses was a lot harder when your dragon ate 3 to 4 times as much as she used to.

Karen looked back at her cousin, grinning. She was smeared with gore up to the wrists, but didn't seem to mind. Well, Karen had never minded getting a bit dirty... But she'd never been good with a knife. Apparently, necessity led to habits, because Karen had chopped a slab of meat up expertly, tossing the pieces to her teal-hued Blue as she worked.

"You about ready to head to the lesson?" Karen asked her cousin, who was leaning against the cliff wall looking exhausted. It was autumn now, and nowhere near as hot as it had been during summer, but it was humid out, which was draining at times.

Karen nodded. "Yes, I think we should go now. They'll be starting to gather. The notice said that Weyrlingmaster T'ian will be teaching today."

Karen frowned as she wiped up the muck off her arms. "Which one is he?"

"The bluerider. He supervised us that one time last month when we had to look up Big Bay's history, remember?"

Karen wrinkled her nose. "I try not to remember those lessons," she answered. "They're so boring."

"We wouldn't have to do them if they weren't important." Kari looked over at Seliath. The green seemed more interested in laying out on the ledge now that she'd eaten than joining them. Ienirth appeared to do the same. "Let's get going."

As they entered the cavern, Kari saw that they weren't the first ones there, but they weren't late, either. They took their place in the group. The only instructions had said to dress casually in clothes they could exercise in. Was it going to be some sort of drill practice, maybe learning how they were supposed to sit when they were flying their dragons? Kari had no idea what it would be.

Just then T'ian began to speak. Kari frowned for a moment, trying to puzzle things out. Striking? Safety? Evasion? Attack? Suddenly, something seemed to fall into place. She went rigid. This was going to be hand-to-hand combat practice.

What is it? What's wrong? Seliath was instantly alert, plunging into Kari's mind to see why she'd suddenly become upset.

Kari's hands were sweating. We have to practice fighting, she replied faintly.

Seliath gave the mental equivalent of a scoff. So? Why does that upset you?

Kari swallowed, hard. She was only half-listening to what T'ian was saying. Seliarth, I can't fight someone.

Seliarth replied sharply. Why? Everyone else in your class can, right? Is anyone else frightened like you? If everybody else is going along, then you better go along, too.

Seliath, you don't understand, I can't--

Yes you can. I wouldn't have picked you if you couldn't. Don't be stupid, everybody else is going along with it.

Kari glanced around and true enough, everyone seemed to be going along with it... some people even looked pleased. She felt her legs turning to jelly. Sorry, Seliath, but I-- She turned to leave. This wasn't what she had signed up for, and it wasn't something she could do.

She hadn't taken more than two shaky steps away than Karen intercepted her, looking up with one eyebrow raised. "You better stay for the whole lesson," Karen said.

Kari glanced around. Apparently T'ian was done talking; everyone else had begun speaking amongst themselves. "Karen, I can't fight."

The bluerider weyrling scoffed. "Maybe not yet, but that's what we're here to learn."

Kari pressed her lips together but she seemed to be outgunned, so she slumped and looked around in defeat. "What are we doing, exactly?"

Kari waved her hand at the other weyrlings. "Pairing up with someone who is your height or close enough. I guess we could work together, but you're taller than me, so..." She glanced around. "Hey, he looks similar to you," Karen said, pointing at K'mor.

"That's alright," Kari said quickly. Of all the people she could be paired with, a Bronzerider would be the worst.

Karen frowned. "No, it's not. You need a partner that is your height. Hey, K'mor!" She called. "Can Kari spar with you?" She realized too late that D'kir had just approached him too, but turned to survey the remaining ones who hadn't been paired up yet. The female copperrider was almost her exact height. She'd never talked to Tiael, but she knew the names of all of her classmates. So she may as well pair up with her, if she didn't have a partner. "Hey, Tiael!" Karen called. "Do you have a partner yet?"

Risari and Swyth - tag anyone (ffff scatter-brained me forgot that she's also Mercury, so in she goes!)

Her room was a mess! With her days so full of busywork and lessons, not to mention caring for Swyth, Risari rarely had time to keep her living space as neat and tidy as she'd prefer to. When she'd returned from breakfast that morning, she had a moment to breathe and finally noticed... her clothing was everywhere, draped in convenient places, her few books were haphazardly scattered across her bedside table, and Swyth's couch was covered in hide dust. Retrieving a broom and some scrap cloths, she attacked every surface of her room until every trace of dust and clutter was gone.

My bed feels much smoother now, thank you. But I hear the others talking about a lesson, it sounds like they are leaving. I will not be the one to be late! Swyth had appreciatively stroked her clean stone couch with a front paw, only to jerk her head up, eyes whirling bright red in agitation.

"Okay okay, let me put these back first..." Risari gathered up the cleaning materials and hurried as quick as she could to get them back into the supply closet.

Fine, you do that, I will not be late. I will go on ahead.

Risari groaned as the green left without her. This happened all the time. She didn't seem to understand the concept of patience, and always had a mind for being first to any gathering. Ah well... She jogged across the Bowl to the Lower Caverns, smirking as she saw Swyth sitting off to one side of the larger group of weyrling dragons.

See? No use in hurrying me all the time, you know. We'll get here when we get here.

Hush, you. And with a mental harrumph Swyth closed herself off from her bonded and immediately began to preen her wings as though she had nothing better to do, sitting amongst the other dragons but not quipping up quite yet. If there was a game to be had, she would participate.

Risari snuck into the room in time to hear the last part of T'ian's speech and snorted. Fighting? Did she look like she was one for fighting? Ugh. This would be awful. Nose wrinkled in disgust, she crossed her arms and looked about for someone close to her height and suddenly feeling very, very short.

Atlen and Oceth: Tag L'harl, Therial, Eisenth, Rileth, Tanohth, Swyth

Atlen waited for the rest of their class to filter in someone had just came to stand beside her. She glanced over to see who it was and he must have noticed because the next thing she knew he was greeting and bowing to her. Ah yes, L'harl, he was always very polite to her though she doubted she'd ever get used to anyone thinking that they ought to bow to her, even if it pleased her dragon. "Of course I'm ready." She grinned, "It should be fun, it's not every day that we get to throw punches at each other." Although she had to admit that he was probably more ready for it than she was. She turned back to T'ian as he began explaining what they would be doing.

The lesson seemed straightforward enough. Find a partner, stretches, then learn how to gracefully run like hell away from losing a body part. Oceth might not like that running part, she never ran away from anything. Neither should she ever feel as if she had to. Atlen on the other hand had no qualms with running, though if someone were to ever attack her, Leno would probably remove their eye. She grinned sheepishly, she'd always thought the blue was a pain in the tailfork but maybe that wasn't such a bad thing now.

The girl glanced around, people were pairing up without her and she wondered if she'd be one of the last ones left. Maybe no one would want to partner with her? She knew her position could be intimidating but she was still just a weyrling like the rest of them. But still, she didn't know who exactly would even want her as a partner. She glanced at L'harl, no not him, he was definitely much taller and probably much better at this sort of thing than her.

Just as her mental turmoil was reaching its peak Therial stepped up and asked if she'd like to pair up. Atlen could have sang, "The honor is mine." she smiled brightly and gestured to where the others were beginning their stretches.

"I'm honestly probably not going to be very good at this. They didn't teach self defense back at the harperhall. Though maybe they should start." For some reason she found this very amusing, peaceful harpers flinging fists and all that. She crossed one arm over her chest and hooked the other around it to stretch out her shoulder before moving on to the other.

Outside Oceth pulled herself up from her rather languid pose, she hadn't quite figured that others would join her instead of letting her bask in relative peace. But Eisenth had asked very nicely, Of course you may Eisenth. She let her wings lazily drape over her sides and spread them to better catch the heat of the sun. She was just about to note how nice it was outside when Rileth came bouncing in and suggesting a game. Oceth loved games, mainly winning games anyway but still it sounded quite fun.

She hauled herself up and stretched, Leno and Hetch complained bitterly but she shooed them to a nearby rock. I've never heard of this game before but I like it! I will play too! She trotted over to the others, wondering who would chase first when Tanohth and Swyth arrived, the bronze asking if he could join in their game. Sure Tanohth! Now who will be chasing?

Tag: Zelle, K'mor, D'kir, all 'dem dragons

I can’t sleep while you fight. K’tahl’s head twitched back outside the classroom. Yalyth waited just outside, she had obviously headed this way rather quickly. Didn’t you want to rest so we can play later? He could hear her snort through his head, and couldn’t help but grin. You wouldn’t wake me, and then you would just sleep. Nothing would get done. She flicked her tail in irritation, looking for a good place to curl up and rest. Perhaps Oceth would like to speak on certain matters. And I do not play. I am always working.

K’tahl scratched at his head, simultaneously trying to cover a yawn with his other hand. Yeah sure, say whatever makes you feel better. We both know the truth. Her eyes wheeled red in irritation, but quickly returned to a carefree green. K’tahl could say what he wanted. Didn’t make it the truth. As K’mor came and stood next to him K’tahl gave a short smile and a nod of the head. The bronzerider seemed to prefer silence, so he wouldn’t make him speak.

Then he had to turn his attention back to the lesson at hand. After greeting those gathered the teacher started outlining the lesson. He couldn’t help but grimace, fighting had never been all that fun for him. Never thought he’d find riders actually learning about it either. Holders took them for cowards when it came to duels. They had dragons to take care of, and dragons to protect them. Getting in fights would only endanger the beasts, right?

For a moment he became worried on Yalyth’s account. If he were to be injured and end up leaving her…well maybe that was why they were studying to protect themselves. Still, K’tahl couldn’t envision himself fighting anyone off. Shrugging off his worries he noticed that D’kir had come skidding into the room. He’d worried his friend would be late. It was good to see him arrive. He smiled softly and nodded in greeting. However, it seemed D’kir would pair up with K’mor…made sense, they were both too short. It disappointed him but reluctantly he turned to look for someone his height. Hmm, too tall, too short, oh there. She looked only an inch or two taller, a smaller difference than some of the others. Clearing his throat he approached Zelle. K’tahl hoped he wouldn’t come to regret this. She looked tough, and weren’t garnetriders renowned for their brutality or something?

“Wanna pair up?” He almost hoped she would say no. It seemed foolish to fight her. She might be a girl, but something about her made him think he’d get his arse handed to him. Sure he’d seen the basic steps of dueling, a holder’s son would. Didn’t mean he’d paid any attention. Excuses to avoid such practice were easy to make. Perhaps he should feign a twisted ankle? But no, this training was for Yalyth, he couldn’t skip it. Don’t be so dramatic. I’ll be the one watching out for you anyways. You, fighting?

The grey rumbled in amusement at the thought, she would enjoy teasing him about this later. Though he did need to improve. There could be no room for weakness in her rider. She’d chosen him, flawed though he might be, so that they could become the best together. Eyes still whirling in amusement she raised her head as Rileth came bouncing to Oceth and Eisenth. Soon Tanohth joined the friendly group, and rumbling Yalyth stood up. Stretching out she yawned, then turned to peer at Tanohth. Very enthusiastic, that was good. He would lead well indeed. Her clutchmates were improving. She had come to see this ‘play’ as training for further formations. Perhaps those chasing could think of the runner as thread. Running instead of flying, dodging the representation of death. That could work, it would be their own from of training. Even if they only saw it as play. Rumbling in thought she almost forgot to return Tanohth’s greeting.

Hello Tanohth, it is good to see you. I will participate in this game as well everyone. Are there any further rules Rileth? She would make sure no one cheated. Yalyth felt a surge of ambition, she wanted to win this game, but what would that prove? Little wheels turning her head tried to sort it. Well, winning the game would gain some respect right, show she could lead? She wasn’t sure, she wanted to win, but not as much as she wanted to see important learning. Ambition was silly if it had no direction. K’tahl had taught her that.

How far away are they?!
Kythe: Tag Freyia

"She's doing really well thank you." Kythe said with a smile, talking about her Green always made her happy. There was something about having a Dragon that really opened your heart. Giggling she nodded. "Tell me about it. If Trith keeps going like this I'm going to be oiling her every minute of the day to keep her hide from stretching and cracking."
You would never let it get to that point, you take very good care of me. Trith said rather defensively, as though Kythe had somehow insulted her as well by saying such a thing.
I was joking dear heart, I would never neglect you in any fashion and you know it. We only mean that you are all growing so quickly that is all.
Alright. Would you mind if I went out and sunned myself?
Not at all! Enjoy it, why not go find Darenth and sit with him? There was a moment of silence to this suggestion and for a moment Kythe wondered if she had crossed a line by suggesting that her Dragon ACTUALLY socialise of her own free will.
Yes. Yes I shall do that. She said in a tone that was almost happy and caused Kythe to choke in surprise.

Darenth? Would you like to sun with me while Ours attend their lesson? I find it particularly boring having to wait for Kythe to return on my own. The Green added in an honest fashion that was so usually unlike her. Stretching her wings Trith headed into the Weyrbowl and found herself a particularly comfortable patch of ground on which to sit.

"Trith's actually just asked Darenth to sit and sun with her. I think I must be dreaming." Kythe muttered, more to herself than to Freyia. "I know." Kythe uttered darkly as their conversation steered towards the lesson. "I didn't want to come at all, the thought that we would even NEED to learn just makes me feel sick, but Trith said it was best to do it just in case and I suppose she's right." Kythe nodded vigourously and placed a gentle hand on her friend's arm. "You're on. I don't even want to do it let alone do it with a boy." Kythe snorted. "Best we stick together, that way we won't really get hurt, since I have no intention of kicking you or hitting you to hurt you."

L'harl: Tag Atlen and anyone who wants to be his partner

L'harl shot Atlen another of his famously charming smiles and nodded to her. Now here was a person he genuinely liked the company of - they expected nothing of him, she was polite and hard working and clearly intelligent, she was in point of fact what L'harl would probably have been like if he wasn't a complete social moron. He laughed at her comment and nodded. "This is true. I had not expected you to be so happy to be throwing punches at us all." He winked cheekily. "I do hope I don't get paired with you, if you're so happy to get violent - you may hold a grudge against me for something and who knows what might happen!" He joked.
You're being nice to someone, you're actually being friendly. It's weird. Stop it immediately. Adinath said in a groggy way as he woke from his nap.
Well here's a change of tune. I thought that it was you who was constantly telling me to relax and make friends, was it not? So here I am. I am relaxed, I am making friends. L'harl replied in such a cheerful tone it was scary.
It's because she rides Oceth isn't it? Or is it because you get to beat people up today? Adinath said more clearly as he became fully awake. You're odd.[/.color]
Well thank you ever so much for THAT observation. L'harl snapped irritably.
That's better. Grumpy I can deal with, grumpy we know. Adinath said with amusement.

Wind up merchant. That was what his Dragon was. A wind up merchant. The Copper had Impressed to him purely to torture him, that was it wasn't it? When the lesson began he looked at Atlen and offered a smile. "My apologises Atlen but I believe I'll have to find a taller partner for this. Happy sparring though." He said and bowed to her once more as he moved away to find someone around his size to pair up with.

Tiael - Tag Karen - Eisenth - Tag the ragtag dragonlings

Tiael watched and waited as the class for underway, listening intently. This was, most definitely her kind of lesson. Zelle seemed just as amused by the tasks ahead, perhaps they'd finally be able to settle the score of just who was better at sparring. Not that they'd really made any great attempts to find out, but still, she was curious.

Alas, it seemed today was not the day. They were told to pair up, with someone of their own height. Watching Zelle's sad smile, she forced an encouraging grin to her lips. "Lucky escape." She teased, nudging her forward with her elbow. True, Zelle was taller than most, so she could understand why she looked a bit uncomfortable but the Weyrling was confident she'd have someone to pair with in no time.

Hearing her name called, Tiael turned round and scanned the rest of their class. Who had...aha! Karen. Not someone she was familiar with as more than 'another weyrling of the class' but still. She was a match for height, and Tiael wouldn't get far without a partner. Shaking her head, she bounced over to Karen and smiled. "Well now I do." She said cheerfully. "Just, out of interest, have you done much in the way of formal sparring before?" She asked, curious to know whether she'd have competition in Karen or whether she'd need to be a lot more careful. She always struck Tiael as a confident young woman, but that didn't mean she felt comfortable throwing herself around. To be fair, most of Tiael's scrapes had been far from 'formal' but she could at least defend herself. Who knew, maybe she'd be able to learn some new tricks today.

Falling into line beside her brunette accomplice for today's antics, she set to stretching and preparing for the evasive manoeuvres section of the lesson.

Outside, Eisenth crooned cheerfully as Oceth gave him permission to sun himself near her. Golds, he had quickly learned, liked to be asked rather than have assumptions made. He was more than happy to stick to that. Before he could settle though, they were being bombarded by Rileth. Eisenth flicked his tail, concerned he was simply trying to barge his way in. The Bronze however, bumped his head against Eisenth's shoulder and invited them all to play. Eyes whirling with excitement, he watched the Bronze as he explained the game and then glanced at Oceth. She seemed enthusiastic for the idea, as did Tanohth, another of his Bronze brothers! There was quite a crowd gathering it seemed, but Eisenth did not mind. More dragons meant more fun! Eisenth warbled his own greeting to the enthusiastic Bronze.

Oceth seemed eager to start the proceedings, but she raised a good point. Who would chase? Yalyth joined them before anything could be decided, questioning the rules. It seemed straight forward enough to Eisenth. They ran away, unless they were the chaser and if they were, they had to catch the others. Tilting his head slightly, he voiced his own opinion.
Going inside could be dangerous. We should stay out in the open. Besides, we are all dragons, we don't need to cower and hide away. His voice hummed with enthusiasm at the thought of playing, an he swung his head from each of his siblings to the next. It is Rilenth's game, he should choose who chases first, I think. The Copper suggested, glancing to Oceth firstly to see if she objected, and then to the rest.

K'mor tag: D'kir, K’tahl, Karen and Kari
Rileth tag: silly dragonets

Oh all people D'kir was one of the last people K'mor wanted to pair up with. The guy might be bonded to a bronze but to K'mor the guy was more suited for a blue. He was overly friendly and optimistic, not that K'mor had much to go by. Though by now k'mor was just unhappy that he knew D'kir to be friends what those candidates that he's been having trouble with. If his fellow bronzerider thought that he would be making a new friend today then he was mistaken. K'mor allowed D'kir to grab his attention and K'mor took a moment to think of a tactical way of saying no. Luckily Karen would save him from seeming too harsh. "Not today D'kir, maybe next time."

He nodded a farewell to K’tahl, deciding that he would probably not be talking to the other lad for a while. He walked over to were Karen and Kari were standing. He knew both girls by name, but other then that he knew very little of them. Though it was easy to see that Karen was the more outspoken one of the two. "Karen." He nodded his head in greeting then turned to look at Kari. "Am I really that scary that Kari can not ask me herself?" This was K'mor around women, more laid back and not at all worrying about taking a role of dominance. K'mor had a feeling that the girl was probably a shy one, but he could not tell this for sure. Maybe she just didn't like dealing with men, or some other reason.

"I would not mine sparing with you, though going easy on you is a different story. We are both here to learn." He did not mean to sound rude in anyway, but she did not look like she was much into sparing. In fact he doubt she even knew how to stretch properly. Lucky for her they were here to learn just that.

Meanwhile, Rileth was happy to see that his clutchmates wanted to play this new game. He thought very hard as Yalyth asked him if there was any rules. "Well, there is only one chaser, and each dragon that gets caught needs to stay where they were caught. Once all are caught the chaser wins and picks the next chaser!" If there were any other rules he did not know them and was willing to make up his own if he had to. When he was asked to pick who should chase first he wiggled and poked Oceth with his nose. The golden one will be it, the rest will run! And he was off, anyone watching this group would have to laugh at how silly dragonets looked when they tried to run.
