Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

This time T'ian had chosen his venue more carefully. It seemed that, for whatever reason, the Weyrleadership thought it best that a dragonhealer teach the weyrlings their basic self defense, as this was the second time that he had been called upon to do so. It was true that all Riders received basic instruction in how to defend themselves, and T'ian knew he could probably do so just as well as the next Rider, but it was still an odd choice. So far he hadn't had any issues with the weyrlings disobeying or ignoring him, despite how close they were in age. He supposed that when he was holding a knife and demonstrating that he knew how to use it, no one particularly wanted to sass off to him.

He'd read over the list of Mercury class weyrlings several times in his office, and even still he had trouble remembering all of the names. It was an absolutely massive class, which was part of what had prompted him to find a larger, more controllable indoor space. Such a big class would need few distractions in order to function. Today he'd been able to wrest ownership of one of the bigger lower caverns rooms from the head woman, and had set about removing the tables and chairs from it. It was probably designed as a smaller banquet room meant for private parties, or perhaps even a ball dance of some sort. But it would perform admirably well as a large, flat open space.

Your sister is in this group, Kyzzith hummed in T'ian's head. Why doesn't that make you happy?

T'ian shrugged, perusing his lists another time, seated in the room's one remaining chair. Therial will get no special treatment. This is a massive class. They all need to be taught equally.

The meeting time and place had been posted in their barracks as usual. T'ian simply had to wait for the weyrlings to start trickling in.

Tis the season for santa dragons
Darenth had insisted upon coming with her. Freyia convinced her Brown to stay in the barracks. He hadn't been happy about it, but she didn't think the lower caverns was a good place for her curious Brown to be. The youngwoman had dressed in a light beige tunic and a pair of dark green trousers. She had pulled her hair back into a runner's tail, dreading the day when she would have to have it cut short. "You will not be gone too long right? Darenth questions his rider, watching her prepare with forlorn expressed. Freyia smiled and kissed her Brown's snout. "I'll be back as soon and the lesson is over love. Giving her dragon a final caress she started off for the lower caverns.

Freyia took a moment to gaze around the room. She didn't think she'd been in this part of the lower caverns before. Not that she ever had a lot of time to go exploring. As a candidate chores and lessons had kept her busy and now Darenth and lesson kept her even busier. chiar and tables had been moved to make room and she spotted an unfamiliar figure seating in one of the few remaining ones. She approached the Bluerider and offered a friendly smile. "Hello! I don't think we've met before. I'm Freyia, Brownrider of Darenth."She still got a thrill at being able to introduce herself as a dragonrider. "Are you teaching our lesson today?" She asked curiously. She gueesed that the young man must have been a few years younger than her, but she had learned that age and experience didn't always go hand in hand in a Weyr.

"You won't fit in the lower caverns now." Atlen sighed, she'd once again failed to keep her dragonet in the barracks with the others. I know I can't. I will nap outside where it's warm. I'd rather do that than lay in our room. The girl had to give her dragon that, it made sense and there could be little harm that came from it, unless Oceth herself instigated it.

They stopped at the doorway so Atlen could peel Hetch off of her shoulder, "You'll stay out of trouble right?" The queen lowered her head so the little brown could be laid between her headknobs. Of course. Now do us both proud. she gave her rider a firm nudge into the door. Leno shrieked from above, but Atlen insisted he go wait with the others. This was a self defense lesson and if he were to see blades and weapons flashing around he was sure to lose it and go into full-on protect mode for his mistress.

She found the room quickly. It was familiar, she'd spent much of her time as a candidate passing by it on her explorations. She remembered quite fondly the mushrooms she'd managed to cultivate and as far as she knew the staff continued to harvest them even after she'd Impressed.

As she stepped into the room one of the weyrling masters and Freyia were already there. He seemed young, probably not any older than herself, but she knew that candidates started standing at the age of twelve so he could have already been a rider for years now. "Hey Freyia!" she called smiling broadly. She didn't know the girl very well but she was at least familiar with her from lessons. "Weyrlingmaster it's nice to meet you. I'm Atlen rider of Gold Oceth."

She glanced about the room at the equipment. She didn't know how much self-defending she'd have to do in the future. Who would dare attack a Jr. Weyrwoman? But that thought only brought up memories of the food shortage, how on edge everyone had been. No. Her position wouldn't protect her, it would only make her a target. She mentally steeled herself, fully intending to get the most out of this lesson that she could.

always classy, never trashy
Yalyth continued to challenge him. Every day she grew, and somehow she only got smarter. “I wish you were stupid so I could tie you to a post. And you would be happy about it.” K’tahl sighed as he flopped into the furs that made up his bed. Shirtless because of the heat it actually felt okay for the moment. The gray ignored him as she lay curled in her corner of the room. Yalyth had decided to get some sleep. K’tahl had to go to yet another lesson. Didn’t seem fair that she got more sleep than he did. He needed more rest, no dragon oiled their own hide. If I could I would. Your pouting is making me restless, get to your lesson so I can sleep. We will have much to do later.

Laboriously he rose, quickly finding a suitable shirt for a self-defense class. He wrestled with his hair, giving up soon after. It would only be a mess after practice anyways. Any extra physical exertion wasn’t it worth it right now, not with the heat. “Maybe you have plans. The rest of my day is filled with a nap.” Yalyth opened an eye, and if possible it appeared that she smirked. Believe whatever will get you to your lesson. Hurry back, I don’t want to sleep long.

K’tahl couldn’t win and he knew it. Pulling on some shoes and waving Yalyth off he stumbled out the door. Perhaps the grey should’ve chosen someone not so dependent on midday naps. Yawning as he walked the weyrling was thankful he didn’t have to go far. Hopefully today they would just go over stances or something. Dueling had some importance as a minor holder, but K’tahl had never paid attention to such frivolous behavior. Who in their right mind wanted to play with knives and get their face broken?

Apparently riders did. It appeared he was still a little early, not many had gathered yet. “Fardles you Yalyth…” he mumbled under his breath, “I could’ve slept a minute more.” Yawning loudly he stretched widely and joined his fellow weyrlings. “Atlen, Freiya…” He nodded to each in turn, and then faced their teacher for the day. Looked too young to be teaching anything. In fact…was this rider younger than him? When did this guy impress? Eyes full of confusion he turned his head to the side as he inspected, “You must be quite the fighter to be teaching us at your age.”

K’tahl grinned, trying to remain slightly charming, though he the effect was lost as he yawned at the end. Almost as an after thought he added, “Oh, I’m K’tahl, Greyrider of Yalyth. Pleasure meeting you.” Stepping back a bit he glanced around the room, he put his hands behind his head, trying to hold it up as he strolled. “So…we have to punch each other today or something?”

Zelle woke up to the sight of Jenaveth trying to sit up on her hind legs and lift herself up using her wings and tail for balance. She had no idea what she was doing but when she let out a loud yawn the garnet snapped her head toward Zelle then promptly fell over with a loud thud. You're awake! Yay! I was practicing standing up like you do. Its really hard. How do you do it? Two legs don't seem that balanced to me. You don't even have a tail to help. Did you have good dreams? I didn't peek this time, last time was weird. You had no clothes! Tardis went somewhere again he's always off somewhere. Don't you have a lesson soon? Why did you have to take a nap when you had a lesson soon? The constant flow of hyper words made Zelle groan but smirk slightly. It was something that had become normal for her to be greeted with every time she woke in the morning when Jenaveth woke before her or when she took her naps after doing chores. Sometimes it was like the dragon stored all of it inside her head and just waited to pounce on her rider with all of it at once.

Though it was frustrating sometimes, this was one of those times it was almost soothing to hear the familiar rambling. "I don't know how we do it, we just do. I had no dreams this time and yeah. I have a lesson soon. I took a nap so I'd be rested for it. Ok? Tardis can go where he likes you know, he's a big boy now." She managed to answer as much as she could while getting up and putting her pants back on. Moving to pick a different shirt for this lesson since she recalled it saying that they were doing self defense. This was a lesson she could get into, already keeping herself in shape by doing her exercises whenever she had time. Making sure her annoying shoes were secure on her feet she looked to Jenaveth who was waiting expectantly. "I'm sorry Jen, but you can't come with me on this one. You need to stay here."

The garnet's eyes swirled and she seemed to frown. Zelle was expecting that. Jenaveth hated staying behind while her rider went somewhere. Especially when she was wide awake and wanted to explore! But...I want to come! I want to learn how to fight too! Zelle shook her head and chuckled while moving to gently pat her dragon's neck. "I'm afraid you wouldn't learn much. This is for human fighting. Not dragons. I promise we'll go do something the moment I get back ok? She still didn't look happy about it but she huffed with a slight nod of her head. Smiling she gave her a quick peck on her nose and then headed for the door. "Remember...BEHAVE."

Jenaveth sent her a quick burst of amusement at the order but otherwise kept silent while she watched her rider head off. Zelle made her way quickly to the meeting place for the class. Seeing others already there she rubbed her neck just happy she wasn't late. Seeing their teacher for the day she bowed her head before introducing herself. "Zelle of Garnet Jenaveth. Ready and waiting." She said with a slight smirk before crossing her arms and looking around at everyone else. Wondering who would give her the best challenge today..

Tiael & Eisenth: Tag Zelle & Oceth

So, we have a lesson, yes?
"No, I, have a lesson."
But, we got to lessons together. Eisenth insisted.
"Not all of them, remember the one where I had to learn lots of names for places and tithes and things?" Tiael reminded him, causing the Copper to tilt his head thoughtfully.
Still, I do not see why I can't come?
"Because it's inside, and it's defense lessons. You would neither fit, nor be able to participate."
I could learn to defend you? He inquired hopefully.
"Mmm, nice try but no. For today, you are to relax. If you really want to do something, get to know your clutchmates; afterall we'll be flying with them in a few months."
There was a pause as Eisenth considered this before...
Very well. I will learn about dragons, you learn how to flail your limbs at people. He said decisively, observing as Tiael tightened her laces, her ponytail and ensured her clothes were fastened properly.

Done, she headed out into the caverns, Eisenth slinking outside to the sunlight. He meandered along, spotting a familiar shape sprawled in the light. He upped his pace to that awkward lumbering trot that only a dragon could manage on the ground.
Oceth, greetings. May I share the sun? MyTi has a lesson with Yours, I want to talk with my clutchmates. He stated rather matter-of-factly, though he had paused a ways from the Gold and waited, snout outstretched curiously at the young Queen.

Tiael meanwhile hurried to lesson. There was more enthusiasm in her stride than she'd mustered in a while. Despite being a lot more tired than she could ever remember, she was enthusiastic for this lesson. The general babble that marked her Weyrling class could be heard long before she arrived, a smile curving her lips she almost bounced into the room and grinned to their instructor. "Tiael of Copper Eisenth, looking forward to today sir." She said cheerfully, glancing over the others for a moment. Today would be interesting.

Sidling over, she pursed her lips thoughtfully for a moment but shrugged and wound up shoulder to almost elbow with Zelle. Shards it was easy to forget how tall she was when they weren't hanging out much. "So, that sparring we never got round to..." She murmured quietly, gaze sweeping the room, though she did spare a quick glance up at Zelle, a determined but amused glint in her eye. "Think you can take me?" She questioned after a moment, bouncing on the balls of her feet but keeping her gaze firmly forward. She couldn't help it, a lesson like this? She would wonder who she was if she wasn't competitive.

T'ian nodded to each weyrling that wandered in, mentally committing their names to their faces. Small, neat checkmarks were etched next to their names on his role sheet as each announced themselves. It seemed for the most part that Mercury class was a punctual group. He gave K'tahl a somewhat blank look when the gray weyrling addressed him, as if he were deciding whether or not to take it as a slight or a compliment. Either way, it didn't really require a response. His questions about the lesson, however, did. T'ian rose from his seat and tucked the chair along the wall so that it wouldn't be in the way, folding his arms behind his back.

"Some of today's lesson will be spent on proper striking, yes. But most of it will focus on safety and evasion." He made sure that the class had focused their attention on him before he continued speaking, not bothering to raise his somewhat dusty sounding voice. If they wanted to learn, they would listen carefully. "A dragonrider does not strike and attack like a common animal. Unruly brawls are beneath our dignity as the protectors of Pern. I will be teaching you how to defend yourself in the instance that someone assaults you, so that you can escape with that dignity intact." He paused for a moment, and a dry smile crept over his lips. "As well as your face."

He motioned with one hand to the scraggly group of weyrlings, saying, "Pair up with someone close to your height, please. Our first section of the lesson will be about proper evasion techniques, such as dodging a strike or a knife. We will start slowly, and build up momentum as everyone becomes comfortable. Of course, beforehand, I will lead you all through some mild stretches so that no one overexerts themselves and must be sent to the infirmary. Once you've found your partner, please line up in an orderly fashion. We will begin with toe touches."

Who will be your partner? Kyzzith asked, having taken a mental count of the weyrlings that had shown up. We currently have an uneven number, so unless someone shows up late, I will take one of the male weyrlings as a demonstration partner.

K'mor tag: anyone and no one.
Rileth tag: Oceth and Eisenth

So you have a lesson, but I can not go, because I am too big? K'mor was please that with age his dragon did not have to be told anything more then once or twice. Too big was an understatement, height wise the bronze would be fine, but he was getting long. K'mor was keep track of the time as best as he could, managing to visit his canine right before he would leave for lessons. He saw no problem with showing affection to both his canine and dragon. Rileth was no normal dragon, he was friendly, happy and shared his joy with everyone and everything. K'mor decided that this was what kept the bronze from being over protective of him, otherwise they might have had some problems by now.

'You might not be allowed to go inside, but staying outside should be fine. If anything some of your clutchmates may be there.' This perked up the young bronze, he enjoyed the time he spent with his clutchmates, even if he could only remember a handful of their names. The bronze followed K'mor closely and bumped the weyrling playfully with his head. Can I play? K'mor thought about his dragon's question as they walked across the weyrbowl towards the entrance to the lower caverns. 'Under one condition, if Tanohth, D'kir's bronze is there you are not allowed to play or speak with him. Try playing with that Gray sister of yours, Yalyth or the queens, the gold and garnet.' Rileth listened carefully, he could do that, he would do anything K'mor wanted, just as long as he was allowed to play. He already knew what he wanted to play, there was a game he learned for the young children of the weyr. He did not know the name, but one player was the chaser and the others were to be chased. He always wanted to play, and maybe he could convince his siblings to play with him.

K'mor eyed those dragons that had followed their bonded. He noticed the young gold and suggested that Rileth should included her in his games. Walking into the meeting room K'mor was just in time to listen to T'ian's speech. Was this boy really to be their teacher? The kid looked to be around the same age as K'mor, was he really going to learn from this guy. K'mor, the son of two riders, who as a weyrbrat knew of both of his parents, probably know more about fighting then this kid. He took a spot next to K’tahl and crossed his arms. K’tahl was one of the only classmates he could stand, so taking a spot near him looked better then standing alone. K'mor took count at the weyrlingmaster spoke, adding him made an even number, which meant he would have to pair up with someone. Well being a future bronze rider there might be a few that would want to spar with him. He would wait for someone to come to him, there was no point in him picking a partner.

Outside Rileth bounced around Oceth and Eisenth, he greeted then both before he bumped his head into Eisenth. Let us play a game! I know a game that I want to play! All run but one, the one that does not run catches the rest. They win when all are caught! His body shook with excitement, he was overjoyed with being able to spend time with his siblings.

Tag - Atlen

You know you really have nothing to worry about. Therial heard Aeve, but it was hard to be reassured. She'd never considered herself super fit and she was sure this would become obvious. The only silver lining was the fact it was her twin teaching the class. It wasn't that she expected special treatment, but it would be a little easier doing this in front of him versus some other rider she didn't know. She really needed to remember to visit him and Kyzzith soon, though. She really missed the blue and hearing the nickname he gave her.

But you miss me more, obviously. Aeve couldn't help but butt in. She was young enough she felt she could get away with playing the jealous card. Of course I miss you more. We're almost never separated for lessons. However, the grey actually thought this was a good thing. It was good for her rider to interact with the other weyrlings without the dragons getting in the way.

Examining the other weyrling and listening to the goings-on, she couldn't help but frown. She didn't like the looks they were sending her brother. Yes, he was young, but he was a rider and due the respect he so rightly deserved. She especially didn't like the other grey weyrling questioning T'ian. Not sure if she liked K'tahl, she looked towards some of the other girls. Out of them, she really only enjoyed talking with Atlen, not that she'd spent much time with the other girls. When T'ian announced they should partner up, she gravitated towards the goldrider, knowing they were roughly the same height, Atlen being a few inches taller. She managed a small smile for the girl. "Hello, Atlen. I would be honored if you'd partner with me?" she asked, not wanting to assume.

How far away are they?!
L'harl - tag Atlen

Now this was more like it! Here was a lesson that L'harl could not only enjoy but excel in (or at least so hoped). He had done plenty of self defense back at Benden and naturally with two younger brothers and plenty of male 'friends' there had been more than a few fights between them all to practice what he was taught by the Riders. No one got badly hurt, only a few cuts and scrapes and plenty of bruises for them all to brag about later on - after all it was all in good fun!

Striding down the corridor towards the lower caverns he clasped his hands behind his back and allowed himself to relax a little. Adinath had been fed, washed and oiled early that morning and he had taken the time to go for a run too - he had been far to lax with himself recently and he knew that he was going to get out of shape if he didn't push himself harder (or at least out of shape in HIS eyes).

Entering the room he nodded to the man who would be conducting their lesson for the day before finding himself a place beside the Goldrider within their group. "Greetings Queenrider Atlen." He said formally, bowing to her with a charming smile upon his handsome face. "Are you ready for todays lesson?" He asked her politely.

Kythe - tag Freyia

This was not a lesson she wanted to do. No. No thank you.
It is necessary. Trith said sternly to her Rider. It is so that you can be safe in places that I cannot reach you.
That is not a comforting thought dear heart. Kythe sighed softly.
Maybe not but it is one you must face. While I cannot see any trouble that would mean you would need these skills, nor do I see that I would not be able to protect you from harm at all times. However, I do see the logic behind it all. Please just do this for me.

Sharding Dragon always knew what to say to make her Rider do as she was told... Walking into the room Kythe nodded her head to the Weyrlingmaster and immediately found her place beside Freyia. "Hi." She said with a smile. "This is going to be... interesting..."
