Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Gale sighed, petting the undersized brown that clung to her shoulder. The poor little thing had been anxious and practically inseparable from her recently. She supposed her mood had been affecting him. She was starting to feel a little better, but she was still scared.

The touching had helped. Seeing the eggs and Izaxth had rekindled some of the wonder she held for dragons and had reminded her why she had been excited to be chosen as a Candidate. Not to mention Nairo and Tallyn's support. They both had a very healthy attitude toward the whole thing and made her feel as though maybe it all wasn't as bad as she was expecting.

Still, seeing what had happened to Suri and F'sh and all those other riders....especially F'sh. Those memories still chilled her to her bones.

She sighed and stood, tired of sitting in her room with only her disturbing thoughts and an anxious firelizard for company. She needed to be with someone. She thought of Tallyn and wondered if he was busy. He might have some idea of how to take her mind off everything...or perhaps more comforting words.

She walked down the hall to the boys' side of the barracks and located his room. Leaning toward the curtain that served as his door, she said, "Tallyn? Are you busy?" She held her breath as she waited for a response, suddenly realizing that he might not even be there.

Tallyn was sitting on his cot. Back against the wall, as he propped an unrolled bit of hide against his knees. He'd been surprised and relived to receive a message from his old brother. He'd been a bit worried about him and his father since thread had resumed falling on Pern. Having not gotten any news before he had assumed both were fine. The message had stirred up previous fears as to their safety, but all it seemed was well at High Reaches. There had been injuries and a few deaths, but Tallyn was relieved to hear none of his own family had been killed. The message was not all good news. His brother retold how he had been injured in the last fall, not badly, but enough to keep him out of the skies for a few weeks. He did joke about how he thought the scars might get him a little more attention from woman. Tallyn chuckled softly to himself, that was typical T'rex. The Bronzerider rarely took anything too seriously. T'rex mentioned hearing there was another clutch hardening on Vaioa sands and wished his little brother luck at the next hatching.

Tallyn was reading the message a second time, when a voice called out from the other side of the curtain. The hide rolled back on itself as he let the item drop onto the cot as he rose. Woman didn't often come to this side of the barracks, well at least not to his room. He took a quick glance around the room, just to make sure it was presentable. Other than than the hide sitting a top the furs, his bed was neatly made, with a slight impression from where he had been sitting. The set of draws containing his clothing was located at the foot of the cot. A smooth stone stone, dark grey in color with a faint lighter streak running through it sat on top. His only memento from the High Reaches. One pair of sandals and another pair of thick soled boots sat by the door way, and a stool sat in the corner nearby. Satisfied Tallyn pulled back the curtain, smiling in recognition. Gale, hello. Come on in." He stepped back from the doorway, holding the curtain aside for her to enter. Well this is a pleasant surprise, I don't get many female guests. He joked.

Gale smiled sheepishly, not quite in the mood for such jokes. "Thanks, Tal," she said. Sisco hissed at the young man as she stepped into the room, but didn't move from his perch. In fact, he tightened his tail's grip on her neck and held onto her ear with one of his forefeet.

Gale looked around as she tried to gather her thoughts. Tallyn was surprisingly tidy. Her brothers had always been making a mess. This neatness was a refreshing and appealing change. She peered at the sculpture on his chest of drawers for a moment, wondering what it's significance was. Being the only decoration in the room, it had to be important. It was a nice piece of work, which spoke to good tastes in her opinion.

Remembering why she had come, she turned back to her friend, hugging herself. "Sorry for coming over here like this. I just....I don't want to be by myself. I need to talk to someone. Do you mind?"

Tallyn smiled and nodded. The girl seems a bit more subdued than usual as she looked about the room. Her flit at least didn't seem to have changed his opinion of him. Tallyn gave Sisco a wide berth, he didn't fancy having the creature decide to attack him. He wasn't entirely sure why the flitt disliked him, but the feeling seemed consistent during all their encounters.

"No it's fine I don't mind all. You should know that Gale." He answered with a reassuring smile. She was obviously upset about something, and he had an idea about what it was. He rubbed a hand against the back of his neck, hesitating for a moment before he spoke. "We can talk, but ah we can't do it here. They ahh don't allow male and female candidates to ah be in each others rooms." He explained a little sheepishly. He knew some candidate did ignore that rule, but he didn't want to put his or Gale's candidacy in jeopardy. "We can go talk in the Common Area though or someplace else more private if you like." He continued, not wanting her to think he was trying to make an excuse not to speak with her.

"Oh!," Gale exclaimed, embarrassed by her faux pas. "I forgot about that rule. Let's go to the Common Room then."

She turned and headed back out to the specified area. She was a little disappointed by this turn of events. There was something more intimate and comforting about being in someone's room with them. She thought it would have helped her feel better to do it there, perhaps because it would have been more private. But if Tallyn didn't want to break the rules she had to respect that.

Upon entering the common room, the short young woman sat down in the nearest chair and pulled her feet up onto the seat with her knees pulled close to her chest. She waited for Tallyn to get settled and then realized she couldn't think of anything to say. Or, rather, where to begin. Sisco climbed down to wedge himself between her legs and her breasts, where he could look up as her and be warm. She looked down at him, stroking his nose while she stalled.

[ooc: if you need gale to say something so you have something to go off of let me know and ill edit. =)]

Tallyn gave a quick nod, following Gale out to the Common Area. With a hatching right around the corner he didn't want to either one of them to miss it because of something silly. Tallyn took a seat across from Gale. It wasn't difficult to see that something was bothering the woman. Tallyn wasn't sure if he could be of any help, but he could at least listen to her worries. He waited quietly as she settled herself into the chair, watching as she gently stroked the Brown flitt.

"I hear the eggs should be hatching in around a month." He commented, once it became apparent Gale wasn't quite ready to start talking just yet. "We've been getting quite a few new candidates already. Kind of surprising since there are only four eggs, but I guess they want to be ready for Bresaith's clutch. Not a bad way to sort out likely candidates. He was rambling a little, more to let Gale sort her thoughts than anything else. "It is nice to have some more help with chores."

Gale sighed and rested her head against the back of her chair, looking at her friend. She kept petting Sisco with one hand. The little brown crooned appreciatively, his eyes calming to a soft blue.

"Tal, is it true people get mauled at hatchings? I heard some of the other Candidates talking about one of the other hatchings here....it sounded awful for everyone that didn't impress..."

She frowned, feeling like the more she heard about dragons the more dangerous being a Candidate sounded.

Tallyn nodded slowly. He couldn't lie to his friend about it, especially when he had experienced it first hand. He left arm bore the scars to prove it, though it had been his own fault. He'd learned the hard way what could happen when you got in the way of a hatchling. He'd gotten off easy though. His injuries had healed, unlike some who had died on the sands. "It can happen. He frowned, gathering his thoughts. "It's not that the hatchings want to hurt anyone you see. When they first hatch a lot of times they are confused and just trying to find there lifemate. They also aren't very coordinated and tend to flail around a bit. If a candidate is mauled it's usually because they got between a hatching and the one they want to impress, or a hatchling injures someone just by accident because they didn't move out of the way."

Tallyn didn't want to frighten Gale, but he didn't want to see her out on the sands unprepared. A candidate had died during the last hatching simply by being in the wrong place. He didn't believe the newly hatched dragons meant to harm anyone. They simply weren't aware of what they could do, and sometime neither were the candidates. "Part of the reason for the touching it to get candidates familiar with the eggs and the being on the hatching sands so no one just freezes up." Tallyn smiled gently. "Hatchings are all bad. Most of the time they are the most amazing thing you will ever see."

Gale nodded quietly, watching her firelizard. "That's not quite so bad as what I'd heard. They made it sound like the hatchlings were vicious. I'll just be careful..."

She sat quietly for a little while and then looked back at Tallyn. "Do you really think I'd make a good rider?," she asked. "Its such a huge difference from what I expected to do with myself, I don't even know what I'm suited for anymore. I mean, just because a dragon says you can impress doesn't mean you should....does it?"

Tallyn gave a quick head shake. "No they aren't vicious. Most just head right off and impress without a problem. Most of the injuries are just because a Candidate was in the wrong place and didn't move out of the way fast enough." Injuries weren't uncommon, especially with the larger clutches when multiple dragons could be hatching at the same time. It could be a bit chaotic for the hatchlings and candidates. "This next clutch is small so there shouldn't be as much confusion like there can be during the larger clutches.

"I do think you'll make a good rider Gale." He said without hesitation. "I've always wanted to be a rider. I've never had to choose between that and being something else. It's a different life than most get to experience, but it has its sacrifices. He rubbed his hand thoughtfully against his chin. "It's the dragon that chooses the rider. Being a Candidate isn't a guarantee. Some never do impress, for whatever reason. No one knows why a dragon will choose one person over another. Some impress their first time on the sands and others can stand for years before they impress. He shrugged his shoulders. There would always been a bit of mystery to impressions."Maybe dragons see the potential in candidates, what sort of riders they could become."
