Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

WTF AM I DOING
Something, someone, rummaged and rustled through kitchen storage.

Say one was found to be carrying flour and fruit away from here, at a glance it wasn't a suspicious act. Maybe this particular fellow was simply being kind and useful, fetching supplies for the staff to make pie or other like sweet foodstuffs. The young man looked the sort bred and made to carry the heaviest of things, so it would appear this is only a natural task for him. Maybe he endeavored to experiment with cooking all on his own, which was a commendable learning experience. Available pie was a pleasant afterthought for anyone.
This worker could bring one to question the scene, however, should one's gaze linger. How many pies were going to be baked? This person had in his possession, bulk bags of each, lugging them over his shoulder as one carried a shovel or pickaxe. Something rolled out of one of the bags not securely tied, and the carrier of said stock flinched when it splat upon the ground behind him, looking back at it. It was an incredibly ripe redfruit, soft and wet.
There was no celebration that called for that much pie.
Clearly, something was afoot.
Should one chose to still be witness to this event, they may then mull over the fact it was the dead of night and well past lights out for this candidate's bedtime, peculiar and recognizable as he was. There was no such kitchen shift that involved late night pie making. He had no reason to be here.
The last, final fact that made this entire situation wrong and questionable, was that this man was the tallest of candidates. The sturdy sort, of thick shoulders and build, with long dark brown hair and a deep, expressive brow line shadowing the mischief and driven purpose twinkling in his green eyes. This was Balusc, and his chores involved cleaning out the herdbeast stables and minding the flora coverage outdoors. He was most typically filthy and would never involve himself, or should ever be involved, in cooking.
Here he was, putting aside sacks of flour and redfruits out into the hall and dipping back into kitchen storage for more, picking through the fruit to find ones bruised and beaten, those that give to a light squeeze. He stuffs more of them into another sack he holds waiting in his other hand. Balusc smiles to himself, a sort of terrible grin that picks up his ears, and his movements are swift. He does not have much time before he might be found, and he knows it.

He was restless. The sun had slunk below the horizon without anything truly eventful happening to him, and he was far too awake to lay dormant in his bed, tossing about fitfully under his blanket. Lady clung to his bony shoulder, tail curled loosely around his neck, chittering quietly into Rujin's ear as they prowled the dark corridors of the lower caverns together. The little green couldn't bear to let her feeder out of her sight for more than seconds, and she was dimly aware of the fact that they weren't supposed to be where they were, picking up on the pinpricks of mischief coming from Rujin. She was nervous, but couldn't stand the thought of her red-headed handler getting himself into trouble without her there to defend him.

Rujin stroked a finger down her neck, turning his cheek so that he could nuzzle his nose against Lady's snout. "Shh, shh, pet. We're on a reconnaissance mission. Don't you want to know where they keep all the wine? I know you like wine, Miss Emerald Shimmer."

She did like wine. This was true. Lady simmered down, though she did keep her head plastered against Rujin's cheek, still nervous. She could hear someone moving up ahead, and the quiet splat of something hitting the floor. Rujin 'hmmm'd under his breath, peeking around the corner in order to see who else was roaming the caverns at night.

Balusc! Rujin recognized him from the touching. Rujin identified the massive bags of flour and redfruit, wheels turning in his head as he tried to put together why Balusc, of all people, would be carting around pie ingredients after dark. Well, only one way to find out.

"No celebration requires quite that much pie," Rujin called quietly from behind his corner, smoothly sliding from around it so that he could be seen. "You're certainly up to something. Lady here and I were after some wine, but...whatever you're doing looks much more interesting." The little green warbled inquisitively, eyeing Balusc from her perch.

Balusc froze as he was discovered, mid-action to placing a fruit into the sack he held, staring stupidly at Rujin and his firelizard for a moment longer than he really needed to.
Feverishly he tried to think of an excuse on the spot, only remembering to exhale after Rujin explained himself. Rujin was no enemy, it was after dark and he too was after something he shouldn't.
He placed the last redfruit he cared to take into the bag he held, and tied it. Hopefully that was enough, he felt maybe a touch uncertain wasting anymore of them for the mission he had in mind.

"I grow tired of the air being so serious here. Losses happen in this line of work, yes? Must people brood so?" he queries, rolling his eyes to demonstrate his annoyance. He fails to mention how he's been effected by the losses himself, and moves away from that thought very quickly.
Balusc reminded himself he had a solution, that's what he was gathering supplies for. He shifts his weight slightly, hoisting up the secured bag and carrying it over one shoulder as he's already done several times. He pats the bag almost affectionately and smiles. "Balusc is set to clearing the air this night. Flour for every pillow, and a soft redfruit for every pair of britches." he rubs his chin, "Though I still feel there is more I can do. Something...something is missing. Oil...honey...hmm..."

Balusc is honest with Rujin. Being of a spirited, positive mood, he decides the candidate comes across to him as someone he doesn't need to hide this from. Should he be wrong to assume this and Rujin prove otherwise, Balusc still had a way out that involved a quick dose of knuckled naptime.

This was fantastic. "I think I saw some honey in the other room while I was scrounging for wine. We could put it in their hair." Already Rujin was insinuating himself into the plan, more than happy to be an accomplice to Ballusc's caperings. The heavy weight of death and shroud of dreariness that had descended onto the Weyr was too much for Rujin - it seemed that weyrfolk were rarely in the mood to be cheered up, and had little to no regard for harpers and their songs.

Or maybe it was just his songs they disliked.

"Once the honey is in their hair, the flour will stick even better."

Lady trilled sweetly, snuggling her face against Rujin's cheek in response to the brimming joy that had taken the place of the candidate's previous boredom. "I really like your redfruit idea. It'll be delightfully squishy! I can just imagine the juices running down their legs and staining their trousers." Rujin snickered, eyes bright with a growing sense of mischief. "I'll nip back and grab the jar of honey. Do you think we could maybe find some crawlers, too, or would that be too much?"

As he skirted around the corner, nearly prancing with excitement, he thought, yeah, the crawlers would be too much.

Balusc grinned and let out a laugh. It rang a bit loudly he noticed, and he tried to tone it down too late to a calm chuckle. He cleared his throat and moved on. "Bah, crawlers are a splendid idea! All or nothing I say! Tell me where I can gather the finest crawlers my dear ally and you gather the honey!"

He hoisted up the second bag of redfruits and let it dangle for a moment -- the bag was of sturdy make and didn't give, good. Onto and over the same square shoulder as the first bag. A few mashed redfruits didn't really matter. Where they were destined to be, the overripe things would be destroyed by the tossing and turning of the sleeping anyway. He followed after Rujin wherever he headed off to. Balusc needed a bare arm to steady himself or deal with interference, should anything come their way, and was not hindered by all the excess weight on one side of himself. Past experience had him lug around lambs and calves in much the same way.

"I do not think people must outgrow a good prank, I am twenty turns myself. I think riders and candidates alike just...needs reminding what it is to laugh again." he states, with certainty in his expression. Happiness could not be forgotten, laughter was an incense that needed to linger in the air. He needed to see other people experience it.

Privately he wondered what his neighbor Garel looked like, when he laughed.
