Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Gale paced up and down a small portion of hallway in the lower caverns. She hadn't been back to her room since her stint in the Infirmary during Threadfall. She had been told to go to bed but she knew she wouldn't be able to sleep. And she just didn't have the energy to face Sisco right now. He was such a handful...

She couldn't stop shivering. She shook out her arms and opened and closed her fists, trying to regain control over his muscles, but it didn't help. Her breath came in small little spurts, causing her to feel like she was drowning. She tried to take deep breaths but it was difficult. She whimpered and walked faster, not knowing what to do with herself.

She hadn't known what Threadfighting was really like. Of course she had known it was dangerous. She had known what thread was capable of. But hearing about it from a gentle harper and seeing it before her own eyes were as different as a kind word was from a whiplash. She saw Viroth crashing into the floor, his bones crumpling like stale bread and his rider flying away through the air, over and over again. And F'sh's face as he lay on his dragon's neck was still as clear as if he were right in front of her.

The life of a dragonrider was ugly. She didn't want it.

The normally buoyant candidate collapsed to the floor, the hard shock sending pain shooting through her back. She barely noticed it. She heaved forward, a ragged sob tearing from her throat to fill the hall. She put her face in her hands helplessly, feeling utterly disconnected from the body sitting in the dark, rocked by its own sobs.

Well this was familiar. Sent on another errand again to the Weyr. This time she remembered her way around and was on her way out. Taking her time since Murask was wanting to sniff at everything again and was spooking others that saw him. The whole place had a heavy melancholy feel to it this time. She knew why of course, Threadfall had come and gone that morning. Taking so many lives with it and injuring many more. The supplies she had been told to bring had been extra food and some medical supplies. The medical ones had been delivered first and Faranth she had gotten out of there quick to get to the lower caverns.

Muran hated seeing and hearing people in pain. It made her feel helpless and Murask got upset when she started feeling sad. Walking along they were both just enjoying how cool it was in the lower caverns compared to outside. That's when Murask's head snapped up and he let out a grunt. "Murask? What is it?" He had stopped dead in his tracks and seemed to be listening. "Murask?" She was getting a bit worried now but when she reached out to touch him he turned to her with eyes swirling with yellow. Hear sad sound. Fff..ffaamiliar. Muran frowned at his words and looked ahead of them straining her ears. As she did so though Murask huffed and started forward at a quickened pace.

"M-Murask! Slow down..." But he didn't listen. He kept moving forward at a trot now and Muran was having to jog to keep up. That's when she started to hear it. The sound of crying. How had he heard that? When he started to slow down she did too and soon spotted the source of the sounds. Her heart clenched at the sight of the familiar form bent forward with their face in their hands sobbing. Murask let out a sad whine and moved closer to her until his nose was gently bumping against her shoulder. Muran quickly moved to rest on her knees in front of her. "Gale..? Gale are you ok? What's wrong?"

[ooc: wonderful <3]

Something bumped her shoulder and Gale automatically moved away from it. It was a slight movement, barely enough to bring her out of Murask's immediate reach. Someone sat in front of her, but she didn't pay them - or the source of the bumping - any attention. She just sobbed, unable to think or react.

"Gale..? Gale are you ok? What's wrong?"

She recognized the voice, and with it the creature she could hear breathing next to her. Their presence was comforting, and yet at the same time mortifying. For a long time she couldn't respond. She just went on weeping. Eventually she fell forward into Muran, leaning against her helplessly. She sniffled and tried to bring her tears under control, but she still couldn't speak. She clung to the young handler, desperate for comfort.

Muran's heart felt like it was breaking seeing the girl sobbing so uncontrollably. When Gale suddenly felt into her, Muran's arms immediately went around the other girl. Squeezing her a bit in a comforting hug as Murask moved closer to gently rub his nose against her back. Both of them were worried about their friend that had been so kind to them before. "Gale...Hush now its ok. It'll be ok." She didn't even know why Gale was so upset but it didn't really matter at the moment. Until she calmed down Muran knew she couldn't get the other girl to talk. Even then she might not want to.

Murask didn't like the sound of his friend crying. He didn't like it when anyone did around him. It was an upsetting sound and it made him sad when he couldn't make it stop. Breathing softly against Gale's back while rubbing it with his nose he tried to be comforting too. Friend no be sad. Is ok. We here. We make better. Yes yes? No more eye water. He tried to use a gentle tone like his handler did though it sounded odd coming from the big blue.

[ooc: <3 theres no problem with the length]

Muran and Murask's voices sounded miles away. Gale wanted to respond, but she had no strength. All she could do was cry and cling to her friend. With time, her sobs slowly calmed to shuddery, sniffy breathing and her grip on Muran's arm softened.

No longer feeling crushed beneath the weight of her emotions, Gale sat up and moved into a more comfortable position next to Muran. She sniffled and pet Murask in attempt to reassure the worried blue. Feeling tired after all her cryng, Gale leaned her head on Muran's shoulder.

"Thanks, Muran. I'm sorry about this, I just..." She swallowed hard to keep her voice in control and continued, "I was in the infirmary during Fall today. ...And it was awful." She shuddered and turned, burying her face in the other girl's shoulder as she tried to force more images of maimed and dying dragons out of her head.

Muran and Murask simply stayed where they were patiently waiting for Gale to calm down. Muran held her gently while Murask crooned and rubbed her back with his nose. His eyes swirling with shades of worried yellow. When Muran felt Gale's grip soften she felt relieved hoping it meant she was calming down. As the other girl sat up and got comfortable Muran stayed quiet. Not if her friend was ready to talk about what she had been so upset about. Murask let out a gentle rumbling when Gale pet him and moved to lay down next to the girls. Laying his head so it was just barely touching the girl's leg. Wanting to keep contact in case she was still upset.

His handler kept one arm around Gale as she put her head on her shoulder and listened quietly when her friend spoke. When she was done she gently squeezed Gale with her one arm before speaking in a soothing, soft tone. "Its ok. I don't mind. I'm so sorry you had to see such awful things...I heard people at the Hold talking about...some of it." Actually she had heard it all. They talked about all the injuries some dragon's and their riders sustained from the Threadfall. She herself had heard the horrible keening of the dragons that she had learned meant the loss of life. "If you want to talk about it...I'm here to listen. I don't have anymore duties back home anyway."

She smiled at her friend and moved to carefully put her head against hers. "I can stay for a while if you want." Murask suddenly let out a huff of agreement and thumped his tail as he nudged the girl's leg. Yes yes! Stay. Make better. Make smile. We help friend. Yes yes? Muran chuckled and nodded to her wher's words. He burbled happily before speaking again. Go swim? Swim fun. Make happy. He said in a hopeful tone but Muran shook her head a bit. "I don't think she wants to swim sweetie..."

Gale nodded to Muran and glanced down at Murask, grateful for his close presence. She stroked his neck, slowly starting to relax. He looked up at her and thumped his tail, bringing a smile and a small chuckle from Gale with his words.

"Yeah...I don't know about a swim...I don't think I have the energy. But maybe a walk? That would be better than sitting here in the dark I think..." She looked at her friend, hoping the other girl wouldn't mind.

Seeing the girl smile and hearing her chuckled was a great reward for Murask. His tail thumping a little more on the ground like a canine that just got a treat. It kicked up a bit of dust and echoed slightly off the walls. He rumbled at her touch and waited hopefully for the answer to his suggestion. A bit disappointed hearing them both say no swimming but perked right up at the mention of a walk. Walk? Go walks? Yes? See twinkles yes yes. His tail went from thumping to swishing back and forth on the ground rapidly. Muran sometimes swore that he was just a canine in the body of a wher at times.

Muran chuckled and gave Gale a soft smile. "I guess Murask agrees...I do too. A walk would be good. Get some air..." She gently nudged Gale before moving to stand up and then after brushing herself off she held out her hand to her to help her friend up. "Watching the stars um...usually helps me relax. He..calls them twinkles." She said explaining what Murask had meant by the word. Twinkles! Me catch. Someday. Get for Murask's. Muran shook her head waiting for Gale to take her hand so they could get going. The big blue was still determined in his quest. Since he was still barely a hatchling. It was amazing he remembered it at all.

[OOC: XD trust me length is no prob.]

Gale heaved a sigh and gladly used Muran's proffered hand to haul herself to her feet. "Thanks," she said, wrapping her arms around her waist. "Let's go." She looked down at the excited blue as they headed outside together. "...Twinkles...that's really cute. He's such a sweet wher. You're lucky."

She walked along with them quietly, at a loss for anything to say. Her mind felt empty and tired. Suddenly she found the idea of a bed very inviting. She didn't want to be alone just yet, though.

As the entered the Weyrbowl she looked up at the sky, her pace slowing nearly to a stop. It was a spectacularly clear night and the stars were out in force. Gale had rarely taken the time or had the opportunity to view the stars at night and she let out a small, awed sound at the sight.

She gazed upward for a long time, not even realizing her mouth was hanging open or that she had stopped. Eventually, some sound from Murask brought her out of her reverie and she looked back at her friends. "It's beautiful. Do you get a view like this every night? I can't believe how clear it is. Back home in Boll there's almost always clouds."

"No problem." Muran responded softly as Gale pulled herself up with her offered hand. Her small frame wobbling a bit but she managed to keep her balance. The arm around her waist felt a bit odd since she was shorter than Gale but she didn't mind. Putting her own arm around the other girl she chuckled when she called Murask's name for stars cute. "He's always called them that...no matter what I tell him too." She blushed lightly when she said Murask was a sweet wher and she was lucky. "Thank you. I certainly feel lucky to have him."

As they got outside into the fresh night air Murask moved ahead of them with his tail gently wagging behind him. Muran was glad to see the sky filled with stars and smiled when Murask lifted up on his haunches with a grunt to point his nose to the sky. The sound seemed to snap Gale out of her admiration of the stars and Muran smiled a little brighter at her question. "Yes we do. Well...nights when its clear of course. One of the upsides to be nocturnal now I guess..." She liked talking with Gale. She was one of the few people that Muran could talk to without feeling like she would say something wrong. Murask stopped his gazing to skip over to the girls flicking his tail about happily. Many twinkles. See? Shiny bright. Catch for Murask's. Yes yes me will. He said the words proudly and gently nudged his handler before moving to do the same with Gale. Being extra careful cause he didn't want to knock her over with his large head.
