Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Biscuit's Second Clutch; 14 Eggs! Get 'em while they're hot!

Biscuit settled down pleasantly on her nest, the occupants of the dining cavern having learned well the first time that she didn't do well with people being close to her. If not for Visani's insisting that she lay her clutch somewhere where it would be safe and she would be readily fed, the queen would have opted to find a sandy niche in a rock up in the weyrbowl and brood there. But as it was the fourteen eggs were safely tucked under the queen and buried under a good layer of sand, a small fire was set in the hearth behind her, sending flickers of light across her hide. The breakfast crowd was just beginning to filter in and a few glanced longingly to where she sat, jealously guarding her eggs.

Visani was among them, she sent a mental greeting to her pet who trilled loudly back, startling a few people who were carefully passing by into thinking that they were going to be attacked by an irate mother. Visani swiped a few scraps of meat strips and offered them to her pet as a peace offering, which Biscuit eagerly snapped up and got a quick scratch while her mouth was otherwise occupied. But for the moment Visi was safe, her queen's head was pressed against the sands, listening for the telltale sound of shells giving way and the chirps of babies as they struggled to be free. "What is it?" the brownrider whispered softly and brushed her fingers across the sand to uncover the creamy eggshells. Biscuit hissed and lunged for her hand though Visi expected nothing less and was able to pull her hand away before she got bit.

The queen huffed at her mistress and returned to listening, her snout digging into the soft grains to begin revealing the tops of her eggs and the cracks that were appearing on their surfaces. Biscuit threw her head back in another happy trill, humming already building in her chest that was quickly picked up by others. She flicked her head around, eagerly searching for her mate among the gathered flocks. She'd let him see his eggs the night she laid them, before she'd carefully hidden them by sand and he might be the only mate she'd ever let near her while she brooded. Though perhaps he'd want nothing more to do with her now that his babies were on their own. Even in Biscuit's tiny brain that idea didn't sit right, even so her job was not yet done, she had to make sure each of her little ones got free from their eggshells.

Nairo looked down at his shirt in utter dismay. As a weaver, seeing any article of clothing ruined pained him. It was much worse when that article of clothing was something he'd made himself. The nice white shirt he'd spent hours sewing together was stained red with redfruit juice and the bronze fire lizard munching merrily away on his shoulder was to blame. Cliff was a much fussier eater and only dropped a crumb here and there from the piece of toast he chewed but it all added up to one big fat mess. That's what he got for letting his fire lizards share his breakfast he supposed.

"Thanks guys. I needed an excuse to make new clothes." His dry sarcasm was lost on them. Moriarty finished his scrap of fruit and hopped down from his bonded's shoulder to chew at the remainder of the candidate's meal. Nairo just let him and sighed, drifting in and out of a mildly pleasant sleepy haze. He wasn't a morning person, shells he was an insomniac if anything. Early morning candidate life was unbearable sometimes and klah didn't seem to do a sharding thing.

As if to add to his morning misery, a low hum broke out among the fire lizards gathered with their people in the hall. Nairo noticed for the first time that there seemed to be quite a bit more fire lizards than people, more than usual at least. Moriarty and Cliff gave small cheeps and zoomed off to join the group gathering around the hearth. For the first time that morning, Nairo smiled. Leaving his mostly empty plate to the drudges, he went to join the growing crowd to watch the hatching. He already had two fire lizards and did not need another but hatchings were always fun to watch.

A small smile crossed her face as the lightly buttered toast touched her tongue. Some said toast was rather tasteless without jam, but she happened to enjoy the simplicity of it. Nothing big and fancy, just toast, one of the most honest of breakfasts. A slightly confused expression crossed her face as she pondered what she had just thought. Could food be honest? Sure it could be simple, but it wasn't like it could actually lie to you, therefor all food was honest.

Erianna rolled her eyes to herself and thought, stop thinking about food so much, me, and get on with eating it. You need to get ready for the morning chores, you know, it you're allowed back in the kitchen after last time." With her mental scolding she glanced back down at her meager breakfast. A piece of toast, a small egg, and a tiny sausage. It wasn't that much, but honestly it was more than she normally ate. She was a small girl in general, eating wasn't a big priority for her.

When a firelizard let out a happy trill Erianna nearly jumped in surprise and fear. For a moment her body went stiff as worry set in. The trill sounde happy, but that might have just been her imagination. For all she knew someone got too close to the eggs, she assumed it had been the nesting queen that made the sound, and the queen was attacking. However, this idea was soon wiped from her mind when the many firelizards in the lower caverns began to hum. A genuine grin set out across her face, this was a hatching! With enthusiasm that she had not shown in awhile Erianna abandoned her food and went to watch the hatching. A thought began to grow in the corner of her mind, maybe one of these creatures would impress to her! She told herself that it probably wouldn't happen, still, it was a tempting thought.

Rin entered the Lower Caverns, rubbing her eyes groggily and heading right for the klah pot. Blessed klah... her first sip perked her up enough to take stock of her surroundings and she moved over to scoop herself up a bowl of porridge and assemble a meat sandwich. Breakfast of champions! She always maintained that a little meat in the morning was good for you. She just liked meat.

As she took her mug and plate over toward a table, she passed by the hearth just in time for Biscuit to let out a surprisingly loud trill that startled her nearly into dropping everying, "Oh fer.... shaffit sharding feck..."

Managing to steady herself, she hastily set down her food and looked over toward the little gold with a bit of a scowl creasing her brow. Immediately, the scowl disappeared however, as she realized the flitter was uncovering her eggs and the kitchen's population of firelizards were flocking around her, humming. They were hatching! How wonderful.

Dumping the meat off of her pieces of bread and holding the strips in her hand, she moved closer to the hearth, ready to thrust forward morsels toward one of the babies in hopes of securing one. She'd always wanted one, but had always managed to be absent during hatchings or too busy with Syzreth to attend.

How quaint, tell me when it's over, the garnet mumbled sleepily, and Rin chuckled. The queen was as much of a morning person as she was. In that... she was not a morning person at all.

A large yawn issued forth from Iscia, grumbling under her breath when she failed to hold it in. Faranth, but she hated mornings. They made her look nasty and mussed her hair and a whole bunch of other things that irritated her to no end. That was one of the many things she hated about wing drills. They were way too sharding early.

The greyrider grabbed a mug of whatever, not caring what it was and just hoping it would wake her up faster. Faintly recognizing the taste of klah, she slipped herself into her own seat, resting her head against the stone table.

It'll be over before you know it. The grey's words soothed Iscia slightly, but didn't help the headache that was forming. For once, I hope you're right.

If that wasn't enough, that blasted humming coming from who-knows-what only seemed to make things worse. A snarl formed on Iscia's face, about to scream at whatever the blasted racket was, before seeing the congregating group of people in the Kitchens.

What the feck was going on? The blonde woman hurried over, the noise gradually rising in volume as she got closer. "Move over," she sneered, shoving a wayward drudge in her path to see the small queen surrounding a clutch of eggs. And not only that, they were beginning to hatch.

The frown flipped to a grin. Oh, but this was just perfect! A firelizard would be perfect for her in many ways, so long as it proved to be useful. She had gotten lucky today.

V'ash had already been up for a few hours. The thrill of being a rider still hummed through him. No more lessons or silly tests. Instead there were practices and flying thread. Well...flying thread could be particularly frightening. He hadn't enjoyed that in the least. Best not to worry about it now though. So far his wing had been tons of fun, and Cedith performed extremely well. Besides his first mistake everything had been going smoothly so far. One thing was for sure, he would never forgot to bring the firestone again.

I will not let you forget again. V'ash grinned, practically skipping through the dining hall, his klah nearly tumbling from his plate as he searched for a seat. You remind me? You can't even remember what we did last week. Cedith whined unhappily through their link. The bubbly blue was fetching breakfast for himself as well. Now that he had filled out and stopped growing he didn't seem to be hungry nearly as much. A beast maybe every week or so, but today happened to be that time. Perhaps I can't remember the details, but I'm no Lalath

V'ash laughed aloud, much to the curiosity of those surronding him as he sat down to eat. L'ren's good 'friend' had quite an interesting dragon, or so he had heard. Cedith kept with the rumors as well and felt like meeting the green again one of these days. She was a lot of fun to chase, do you think next time I might actually catch someone? I think she favored Torenith. V'ash shrugged, already stuffing his face with a meatroll while simultaneously reaching for his klah. It's good you didn't catch her, that would've hurt L'ren, but I'm sure you'll find someone that favors you.

Suddenly their conversation was interrupted by a high happy trill. V'ash's head turned quickly, almost pulling a muscle as he strained to see what all the commotion was about. "Biscuit's clutch!" he shouted excitedly as the humming began. Cedith rumbled as well Go if you must, I won't mind another small friend. Pip could use company since we're busy with each other all the time. V'ash was already on his feet, one meatroll stuck in his mouth, another in hand, hopefully for a firelizard.

Running to the little nest he almost ran into a few already gathered. Muttering muffled apologies through the food in his mouth he quickly swallowed his breakfast. A flash of green caught his eye and Pip gave a trill as she circled low to land on V'ash's head and watch the proceedings. Her humming caused the young rider's head to practically vibrate, only causing him to be more excited. It looked like he might have shown up just in time to impress!

She wasn’t even sure why she was here, maybe because Sulath was curious about the flitt’s that this so-called Biscuit had hatched. Flitt’s were... cute, she guessed? They seemed more of an annoyance than anything really, unless of course they could fetch her things so she didn’t have to. She supposed that the notion was entirely plausible. She could hear Sulath’s mental snort, but dismissed it as nothing since she was used to such a response from her brown. Time and time again he was nagging at her about something. It was usually, in her opinion, unimportant and uninteresting. He was so fixated on them bettering themselves, whatever that meant. Really all Tieler wanted to do was have a good time, and she really felt that Sulath was out to spoil it for her.

If caring is spoiling, so be it, he broke into her thoughts, sounding somewhat hurt. She hadn’t meant to go and upset him, but at the same time she had no idea how to make it so that they were on the same page. Neither dragon nor rider wanted to bend to each other’s will, so here they were, as obstinate as ever. Alright Sulath, I know I’m being too hard on you, she replied, though her words were a half-truth. Sulath knew better, and proceeded to change the subject, What do you think yours will be like? Red and obnoxious-perhaps? the brown jested. Tieler glared at the cavern ahead of her, glad she hadn’t gotten the location of the hatching wrong. Stepping into the entrance way to join all of the others that had gathered, she scoffed in annoyance at how many had showed up thus far. ”Shards, why can’t they go and have at it somewhere else?” she said aloud, giving anyone that looked her way stink eye. She didn’t care about who heard her, which was no different from every other time.

Could you try and have some respect? I mean, really Mine, I don’t see why you find it necessary to go and cause a commotion like you always do. Folding her arms over her chest and grumbling like a wounded child, Tieler quieted any further complaints.

As the humming reached an overwhelming level and firelizards from all over the weyr flocked to the caverns, perching in the rafters, on the lintels, on the benches and tables, even landing on unwary shoulders, the eggs finally began to break open, encouraged by the music of their brethren. Biscuit had been fairly spot on. The eggs were ready to hatch, and they seemingly all did so at once. Three greens struggled forth, three blues, a bronze, and two browns all began emerging from their eggs, with various limbs and body parts breaking free of the shells-- for those who were counting, anyway. The remaining five eggs were just as eagerly wiggling, with cracks spreading across the surface, but their occupants appeared to be less successful, including that of the largest, golden-hued egg.

Bowls of meat scraps were suddenly procured. Hands filled the air, offering morsels for the newly hatched and hatching lizards. The first firelizard to completely break free of his shell was a brown, but a green was hot on his tail. The brown was a rich orange-brown with muzzle, belly, and limbs dipped in deep klah. He was large for a brown and displayed a rather rude temperament the minute he picked himself up he bared his fangs and hissed loudly at the green.

The green was almost an eyesore. As she unfurled her wings to dry the thin membrane, her hide showed through... a painfully bright green all over, similar in color to the phosphorescent light emanating from a fresh glowbasket. Her whole head and face was a contrasting grey, rare enough to find on a lizard, but otherwise she seemed to be unmarked. She glanced over at the brown and flicked her tail carelessly at him. He could get his smallclothes in a knot for all the good it did him; she was hungry and she'd take care of it immediately! Instant gratification when a hand carrying a piece of meat descended right before her, and she pounced ravenously on the scrap.

The brown followed her progress with bared fangs as the person managed to coax her onto his hand and continued feeding her. He was hungry too, but not stupid enough to trust those hands, no, not at all... The arrival of another green behind him caused him to turn around and eye her balefully as she flopped onto the table. Well, on second thought, there was a piece of meat over there that looked unattended, and he sure didn't want to stick around and meet any more greens. He found the piece of meat and devoured it greedily before locating a second, not realizing that he himself was being coaxed into the palm of one of the audience members.

Soliska had been eyeing the little queen ever since she had laid her eggs, it was starting to seem apparent that Soliska was addicted to the little things. Something like a modern day cat lady. She had made a habit of sticking around the dining hall more then normal. Her small fair of firelizards coming and going as they pleased. Having butter really helping in keeping check on her little friends, not that any of them were real trouble makers. Even Moss who was the youngest of the group enjoyed just sitting around and eating. Speaking of her little group all but her gold stood at attention as the shells started to crack. Butter was more then happy to stay wrapped around Soliska. Her place was on the women's shoulders and she was determined to stay there. None of the firelizards minded the idea of having a new friend to add to the group, Butter herself was ready to add another follower.

Soliska followed the crowd as a few people started to gather around to watch the hatching of the little ones. like always Soliska was ready, she had grabbed a small bowl of scraps over a few moments ago. Everyone else was doing the same, she found a good spot near the eggs and bent low, hopefully one of the little hatchlings would wander just close enough for her to grab it.. feed it lovingly till it loved her. Another? Make sure this time is is something that can think for it's self. Last time I asked for something smarted then the little blue, and you get me a little green who asked when she is hungry.

First of all love, they are not for you. They are for me, and you just happen to like them as much as I do.

Maybe.

V’ash eagerly watched as the eggs began to hatch. So many were already starting to break free! Times like these he was happy to be so short. Some of the taller folks hadn’t noticed as he wiggled forward. Suddenly three greens burst free from their shells, along with three blues, two browns, and even a bronze. Smiling happily he drew as close as he could to the nest to see which one could make its way forward first. A brown broke free first, but V’ash became more interested in the green after the large fellow bared his fangs at her.

Well that was a bit rude, she hadn’t done anything yet. Frowning a bit at the brown he almost admonished him. Pip still humming, but watching carefully to make sure V’ash didn’t get bit. The young rider’s eyes lingered at that little green. She seemed a bit bigger than when Pip had been born. And that color, it even hurt his eyes! Probably wouldn’t need a glow in your room with a hide shining like that. What a strange gray face she had as well…smiling he stuck his hand out with the food all ready for her. She didn’t hesitate for a second. She had glanced at the brown, flicked her tail, but now she pounced onto the scrap he held!

A slight flood of emotions hit his head as impression was made. Grinning from ear to ear he quickly ducked away from the group to allow more people to impress. Delighted he brought her in close as she continued tearing at the food. Pip chirped happily from her perch on V’ash’s head, tail curling around his ear. The bright green quickly finished the meal and turned to peer up at Pip. She gave a miniscule chirp, but immediately turned back to V’ash to demand more food. “Alright, alright, I get it.” Thankfully a helpful person handed him a bowl already prepared and set to go.

Smiling he went to sit down at a table nearby and fed the scraps to the new addition. We were lucky today Cedith! The dragon seemed to have forgotten all about hunting in the excitement of the hatching. V’ash could already feel the blue drawing closer as Cedith soared towards the entrance to the lower caverns. A green then? Is she pretty? What does she look like? Can I see? What will you call her? V’ash put a hand to his chin and peered at the little hatchling with the gray face. “Hmm, she’s quite bright, almost like a glow. Also has quite an interesting gray face. So a dim face…but kind of fluorescent everywhere else.”

The blue rider laughed aloud then, “Think we’ll call her Dimglow. Even though she is so bright!” Cedith rumbled happily, Won’t she take that as an insult? Smiling V’ash watched as the hatchling finished stuffing herself and snuggled close to him, her tiny belly many times larger now. Walking carefully and slow the bluerider headed out to show Cedith. “Honestly, I don’t think she cares.”
