Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Tis the season for santa dragons
It wasn't that hard to see the girl was unsure and timid. A bit like an untamed runner right at the edge of its comfort zone. One wrong move and it would bolt for safety. The girl reminded Arryn a bit of her older sister, timid, but gentle. Trying her hardest not to offend anyone in the slightest. Arryn gave her an friendly smile as Zane hurriedly introduced herself as if fearful if she didn't get it out quickly she quickly find a reason not. "Glad to meet you Zane, I'm Arryn." She spoke softly. When Zane's Blue gave a friendly croon she smiles widely at the creature, He is adorable! Arryn commented gesturing toward the flitt. What's his name?

Arryn listened to Al'dai, finding his topic more interesting than she had anticipated. An eyebrow jumped up when he mentioned an assessment, watching with blatant curiosity as he began writing out a long list of questions. She had been given a traditional harper education so answering questions wasn't new. The type of question the Dragonrider was writing weren't what she was use to or had expected. Some were just down right odd, what feck was a TV soap?! As candidates rose and went forward to get a tablet Arryn joined the crowd, snatching a tablet and returning to her seat.

Resting it on her knee she began scratching out her yes or no answers. This was not anything like what she had expected her first candidate lesson to be. Finishing calculating her score she stared at it for a moment not entirely sure what to make of it.

Isolde ran her fingers through her hair as she read the questions that were written across the board. She was familiar with the type of test this was, but had never bothered to sort out her own results before. Frankly, she didn't know that she wanted to be classified one way or the other, but she supposed that since things were going the way that they were, she would just have to sit it through and be content with the fact that she could wonder no more.

It seemed like a lot of work to go through just to arrive at four little letters: INFJ which were supposed to unlock some sort of secret wisdom about herself. All it really told her was that she had way too much time on her hands.

He’d never heard of a test like this. At the Healer Hall tests were more like handling unexpected injuries and not being made to feel sick by the sight of blood or worse. Firyn of course agreed that everyone had different personalities but he wondered how something written could show it. It definitely seemed like something a Harper would come up with. Not that he had anything against them. Waiting a moment while the majority of the Candidates got up at once to pick up a tablet, Firyn watched with interest as their guest tutor began to write. This didn’t seem completely about diplomacy after all.

When he’d finally gotten his own tablet Firyn sat back and scanned the questions again. He wanted to answer honestly and not overthink them too much but it was going to be difficult for a few of them. The background noise of his fellow Candidates scribbling their own answers faded to a buzz as he focused on writing his own. When he finally did look around the room again it looked like most everyone else had finished before him. Firyn now desperately wanted to know what this very simple result actually meant. Thankfully one of the girls in the room had already voiced that question.

Kymor personally couldn't understand why he already had to be stuck in a room would other Candidates so quickly. It had only been less then a sevenday that he had been removed from his home Weyr. Offered to Vaioa as another male Candidate to add to the mix. He had done nothing to make friends, deciding that if anyone wanted to get to know him they would do so of their own feel will. A lesson, why oh why did he have to deal with a lesson. He stayed off to the side, doing his best to keep from having to deal with anyone, all the lad wanted to do was get the lesson over with quickly. They were to take a test? That was fine with him, funny enough the boy had no problem with being honest in his opinion of things. With easy he blazed threw the questions and then tallied his score.

The letters he came to hardly made any sense to him, but he also didn't care. He listened to the questions of some of the other candidates. It was all well and good but now that the testing was over could they leave. Kymor himself thought that asking his own question would be all well and good. He raised his hand and then spoke. "Was this lesson just about a test? If so would those that are finished be allowed to leave?" Kymor felt that he didn't need to know what some letters said about him. Yet he had the feeling that he was going to find out whether he wanted to or not.

| OOC: I love how INTJ falls under Rational (Mastermind) now Kymor just worries me. He shares his type with Julius Caesar and Hannibal Lecter. |

Well hey, this was certainly a step forward.

By no means could he have considered Atlen to be a friend -yet- but all the same, in that short amount of time, he'd built up that batch of positivity he was so previously known for, and wanted to keep up with the social success.

"Nice to meet you Atlen, I'm Haylian! Agh, it's so emb-" before he could finish the little chat though, they were given their assessment, and he was fiercely trying to keep up with each question. He would've loved to get to know his peer better, but they both would've known it was neither the time or place for that; and if she were as serious about her candidacy as much as he were, she would've ignored that latter half of his statement anyway.

And midway through his own test, he saw another new face enter the room, even later than they'd arrived. Now that must've been embarrassing. All the same, the girl had been mature about the situation and received her tablet and got right to the test. And as Haylian had looked over all the check marks and blanks, he'd smile, wondering how he'd be assessed.

Magical Shiny Times
She’s late, so very late, and it’s no one’s fault but her own. The bread was in too late you see, needed more pounding and twisting before she could braid it and stuff it in the oven. Mercia had to run pell-mell to the candidate barracks, dusting flour off her nose with the back of equally floury hands. She’d never make it in time to be remotely near presentable for her first lesson, and that was something that would drive her wild with shame for days. Her shirt is stained with sweat from hours in front of the hot stones of the baking ovens, skirt patchy with flour and crumbling bits of dried dough. She looks like she stopped in the middle of her shift (which she had in fact) and run straight to the common room upon realizing that she had forgotten her own Candidate Lesson (which, again, she had in fact) without bothering to fix her clothing. Mercia had come to the realization on her run that at least if she was covered in the evidence of her trade she could form a more valid excuse to the dragonriders who had taken time out of their day to help train a silly candidate like her.

Mercia takes a spot amongst the masses, a hastily snagged spot on the floor almost directly in front of the door, a blush burning on her face as she makes it just in time to hear about their assignment.

Well. Isn’t that just perfect. Not only is she later than socially polite, covered in bakery ingredients, and going to be lectured later, but now she has to take a test. Well isn’t that just wonderful. So she accepts her tablet, dubious as to how she’s going to manage this. At least the rider is saying the questions as he writes them, making it easier for her to put a little check for yes and a little x for no. It’s hard for her to manage to get to the results of her test, what with her little board so close to her face so that she can concentrate to the fullest. Mercia hopes that when this is over, someone will help her figure out what her little series of checks and x’s meant.

Al'dai looked over the assembled candidates, watching as they scratched into their wax tablets, occasionally answering questions or clarifying.

When everybody was looking up again, he continued. "You've just discovered your personality type. That's a combination of the way you view the world and the way you react to what you see. If I asked you to describe someone from your families back home, you might tell me that your sister is shy, or that your mother is nurturing. This method is a little bit different; as you saw, instead of applying qualitative words, it gave you quantitative results in each category. People vary in the way they perceive the world: some people prefer to focus on their own feelings and reactions, and some people focus on others. This is called introversion or extroversion, respectively. You probably could have guessed which one you were before you took this test.

"Whether you are introverted or extroverted, the way you understand the world around you will depend on whether you take everything at face value or whether you tend to try and understand the motivations and reasons behind the events. How you react to this information varies as well; you probably focus only on the facts and what you can see of a situation, or you may try to understand the situation beyond just what you see. And despite what you might think, women aren't necessarily the latter category."

He smiled and began pacing. "The fourth letter you got applies to your reaction to conflict. Some of you may prefer to resolve conflict quickly or handle situations methodically. And some of you may prefer to have less structure in your life, and more room for spontaneity."

He stopped pacing and wrote the letters ENTJ on the board, pointing at each one separately.

"For instance; your first letter may be an E or an I; your second, S or N; the third, T or F; and the last, J or P. Having one letter doesn't mean you will have another one; any combination is possible." From looking over the room, it appeared to be that there was a variety of different types.

"These 4 letters are my own personality type. You all have your own written down. To emphasize that there is no 'right' answer, I will go through what your personalities mean according to this test.

"As an E, I am an extrovert. This means I like to be involved with other people. You don't have to be an E to make a good dragonrider; as an E, I may be too quick to involve myself in situations without stopping to think things through. If you wrote down an I instead, it means that you are introverted. It doesn't mean that you are shy or reserved, just that you prefer to know a few people well, rather than spreading yourself among a big group. If you are an introvert, you may spend too much time thinking and wait too long before you act.

"If you wrote down an S for your second letter, this means that you like to look at only the facts in any social situation. As an N, I would rather think things through and work with abstract theories. If you're an N like me, you may tend to 'read between the lines' or see things that people aren't saying; but you may read more into a situation than what is really there. If you're an S, you tend to perceive social situations very accurately, and you tend to look at the basic facts rather than getting bogged down in the little details, but you may miss the chance to take new risks that might involve certainties."

He circled the third letter on the board, the T. "This aspect is perhaps the most important in a dragonrider. If you're a T, like me, then you probably tend to react to conflict in a very logic-based way; following consistent procedures and analyzing situations. When interacting with others, especially out-Weyr, Ts can be seen as cold or indifferent, lacking empathy for others. If you wrote down an F instead of a T, you're probably what's called a 'people' person. You're not only comfortable in social situations, but you you are compassionate to others and you have a good 'bedside manner'-- in other words, you are tactful. When dealing with others, you may appear to be too sentimental, or too idealistic; and you may sometimes miss the end goal of a social setting or communication. The reason this is important is because you will all venture out-Weyr at some point during your careers, and Dragonriders are often called upon by Holders to act as arbiters of conflicts. One of the most important duties is not just fighting Thread, but in presenting the Weyr in a favorable manner. Unfortunately, many Holders will base their opinion of all riders off of their experience with one. If you are the one who appears both empathetic and wise, you will do much to garner the favor of Holders. Whatever your personality, it is important to be aware of your weaknesses as well."

He then pointed to the last letter. "If, like me, you are a J, then you are goal-oriented. Perhaps you like to use lists to keep you on track until you finish your work. You are good at planning things. However, you may be too focused on your own goals to see opportunities, or too inflexible to adapt to new situations that may interfere with out plans. If you are a P, you are more flexible in your approach to work and conflict; you can adapt easily, and remain open to whatever happens. You may be more casual and relaxed in your attitude toward conflict. However, you may have a hard time focusing or getting things done that you get lost or behind on deadlines and decisions."

He put the piece of chalk down and began pacing again. "As I mentioned, we use this type of test in the Wings to figure out who will work well with each other. The last thing I want you to is talk amongst yourselves about the letters you got. Do you think that your letters realistically describe you? Can you see how your strengths and weaknesses are represented?" He leaned against the desk to listen, shooting Merilla a half-smile as the candidates began to talk amongst themselves.

[And for those of you who didn't already look up what your character's personality type is, and are confused by Al'dai's explanation, this is a good link for you to use. Just hover over the letter combination to see what they have to say. This is another good site.]

Boring!

It was all so bloody boring. Who cared what a stupid test said he was like? Denz didn’t need a harper’s crackdust theories cluttering things up in his head. His results hadn’t been accurate anyways. He focused his annoyance into a fierce glare that seared into the back of Daart’s head. The little twerp was enjoying this. How could he possibly think that he was going to Impress? Most of the brats here didn’t deserve even a passing glance from a Searchdragon. Surely the ones that had brought them here were defective somehow.

Daart turned in his seat and flashed the candidate a bold grin, brown eyes dancing with laughter. “You know, if you need help figuring this out, I'd be happy to lend you my services,” the small boy offered. His tone was friendly but Denz just knew he was being disrespected. Shards, as soon as they got out of this stupid lesson he was going to make Daart regret the day he was born. “I know it seems tough, but it’s really quite simple,” Daart continued. “I’m surprised you didn’t know this already, considering your superior education.”

Ok, now that was blatant goading. Dart knew from Denz’s boasts that he came from a wealthy family of holders, that everything in his life had been handed to him on a silver platter. And rather than respecting the candidate’s exceptional upbringing, he was lording the fact that he was a weyrbrat over Denz’s head. How dare that little brat imply he understood the workings of a Weyr better than him? He might have been born in one, but he was just a stupid child that knew nothing.

“I don’t need or want your help,” Denz hissed, he grit his teeth and his fists clenched under the table. Daart was going to pay for his insolence. “And you’ll mind your own sharding business if you know what’s good for you.” His voice was soft but loaded with menacing suggestion.

Daart shrugged, but there was a gleam of triumph in his eyes. He’d gotten the rise he’d been looking for, and therefore some small amount of revenge on his bully. Whatever happened afterwards, well he wouldn’t worry about it at the moment. Because it was so much easier just to soak in Denz’s quiet fury and the older boy’s inability to do anything about it at the moment. Now you look like a stuffy prig in front of a bronzerider, Daart thought with a smirk. Take that, you bastard.
