Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

"Nice to meet you Nira, I'm Arryn." She replied softly to the older candidate's greeting. "If you keep me awake I'll keep you awake." She said jokingly. Hopefully the lesson would prove to be more interesting than if first seemed. If not at least she would leave having met another candidate. He gaze flicked over to a few late comers who were trying their best not to draw attention to their arrivals. Most of the time such antics had the opposite outcome. With all the seats taken, both settled on the floor, making Arryn more grateful she had managed to snag a seat.

With her attention elsewhere Arryn didn't notice Zane drawing closer until the other girl brushed lightly against her. Arryn bounced gently in her seat in surprise, looking up as a low apology reached her, "Don't worry, just gave me a little fright." She whispered back with a warm smile. The girl seemed just a little unsure of herself. Arryn did a double take as a bit of blue on the gril's shoulder caught her eye. A small Blue flitt was perched there, such a tiny thing she had almost over looked him.

It was hard for Isolde to slip back into the role of invisible candidate after the last hatching. She wasn't particularly proud of her little break-down after the hatching and she'd been especially careful so as to avoid the majority of the people who DID remember that she existed lest they tried to offer her their sympathy or some other crock of bull and/or wisdom that they felt obligated to pass along. It was especially difficult not to turn around and smack a body that happened to be considerably younger than her and managed to impress. Then suddenly despite their youth, the new Rider knew absolutely everything that there was to know about everything and it was up to them to help ease the pain of the sting for those who hadn't impressed.

It was not a fair assessment of all new riders, young or old, and Isolde knew it, but for the time being (as she watched the other Candidates listen to the leader and then to flutter around absently as they were instructed to listen to the goodly Al'dai who would impart his own special wisdom), she felt perfectly content and justified in being petty.

Being lectured to by a rider was not particularly uncommon, they did it every so often, whenever a rider was bored or something had happened within the weyr that merited being addressed by someone different than their typical candidate master. Camaraderie, companionship, diplomacy, trust, etc. were themes constantly revisited in the candidates' lessons, so really, it was all Isolde could do, as she sat somewhere near the back of the room, to look with a placid acceptance between the Master and the guest Rider who had come to speak to them.

Al'dai returned Merilla's little smile and turned to face the candidates. Some of the faces were admiring, others skeptical or apprehensive. He cleared his throat.

"Alright, as Merilla said, the duties of a dragonrider that are often glossed over are the civic responsibilities, including representing ourselves well to the Holders and Miners. Not acting obsequious, but knowing how to handle yourself in certain situations where you might otherwise act freely if you were in-Weyr. You'll learn more about diplomacy as a Weyrling, but I'm going to go over the basics.

"This is also a technique we employ in the Wings. The most essential part of being a dragonrider, fighting Thread, is best accomplished if the wings work well together. To eliminate friction we have our riders undergo the same assessment you're about to take.

"The idea, proposed by Harper Hall, is that people have different types of personalities. That's obvious, and I'm sure you all know it very well; some of you may be shy, and others like to meet new people. But more importantly, the type of person you are determines how you react in high-stress situations-- like your wingmate making a mistake in the middle of Threadfall, or a Holder making a threatening comment about the Weyr."

Al'dai took up a piece of chalk and began to write out a series of questions on the board. While he wrote, he spoke over his shoulder. "Record your own answers on your wax tablets, and then when everybody is done we will see what your answers mean."

[OOC: This lesson is really more about you than your candidates. The personality typing test can be found here. Take this test and answer each question as if you were your candidate. It is important to answer HONESTLY, and remember that there is no personality type more desirable than others! Feel free to RP out your character taking this questionnaire, and when everyone's done I'll post something about the results.

For instance, I just took this test as Karen, my candidate. I'll copy/paste the results I got so you can see how to do it. Just a simple copy/paste is fine:
Your Type is

You can RP your character tallying up the numbers and such.

It isn't much of the types of lessons you're normally used to, but we recommend you all do it; it will help us write dragons for your candidates.]

OOC: Brantor isn't "technically" a candidate, but I did his so Icy could have it for future reference.

ENTP - "Inventor"

(Extroverted, Intuitive, Thinking, Perceptive)

Quick, ingenious, stimulating, alert, and outspoken. Resourceful in solving new and challenging problems. Adept at generating conceptual possibilities and then analyzing them strategically. Good at reading other people. Bored by routine, will seldom do the same thing the same way, apt to turn to one new interest after another.

Zane really hadn’t meant to startle Arryn, she felt terrible for it. Sick to her stomach, actually. She really shouldn’t let it affect her so seriously, but she couldn’t help it. She felt the need to apology a second time but withheld, not wanting to embarrass herself further by pleading with the other girl. She’d already accepted her apology, and admitted that she’d been given a bit of a fright. ”O-okay,” she choked out, not knowing what more there was to say. Would it be smart to make an introduction? Yes, go ahead and introduce yourself when you might have very well gotten yourself onto her suspicions list. She’d only brushed past her, how badly could she be viewed for that? Did the girl think she was rude by not saying more?

”I’m Zane,” she said in a rush, looking over at Arryn out of necessity, hoping that her blush wouldn’t be commented on or noticed. She could see past Arryn to a girl that was sitting by her. Was she interrupting their conversation? She couldn’t help but overanalyze, it’s what she did best. She hated to have gotten herself on anyone’s bad-side, or to be thought badly of by anyone. She cared far too much about what other people thought of her. It was part of the reason why she didn’t bother socializing.

Al’dai began to speak and Zane looked forward, quieting. There were no seats left so she was standing. She didn’t mind standing; it made it easier to get away. You have nothing to get away from, she told herself. She didn’t think anything of Arryn studying her flitt. She was probably just curious about him. Volcom, however, was curious about her too. He crooned a friendly greeting, realizing that he was being looked at. He liked to be looked at!

Zane nodded along with what Al’dai said, even if he wasn’t looking at her, she wanted someone to know she understood and was paying the proper attention. She didn’t want to mess up. The sound of an assessment was making her panic. What if she failed? Hearing him talk about personality types was making her really consider her own. Who could rely on her with the way she was now? But what could she reasonably do about it? She was who she was. She knew she had things to work on, but... Could she really be there for someone else when they truly needed her? She couldn’t answer that question with a definite answer. Did that make her unacceptable as a dragonrider? She bit her lip, hard, trying not to be too much of an open book. With Zane it was inevitable.

She made her way to the front very carefully to grab a wax tablet, proceeding to head back to the exact same spot she’d been occupying. She used her arm to steady the tablet, taking a look at the questions on the board before glancing back down. She didn’t like to be confused, but these configurations were a bit tricky. She’d never been good with calculations. It took her some time as she worked through it bit by bit, and she was sure that those around her likely had it all done. She placed her tablet before her face, holding it out at arm’s length, looking at her numbers. That must have been right...

Counselors have an exceptionally strong desire to contribute to the welfare of others, and find great personal fulfillment interacting with people, nurturing their personal development, guiding them to realize their human potential. Although they are happy working at jobs (such as writing) that require solitude and close attention, Counselors do quite well with individuals or groups of people, provided that the personal interactions are not superficial, and that they find some quiet, private time every now and then to recharge their batteries. Counselors are both kind and positive in their handling of others; they are great listeners and seem naturally interested in helping people with their personal problems. Not usually visible leaders, Counselors prefer to work intensely with those close to them, especially on a one-to-one basis, quietly exerting their influence behind the scenes.

Counselors are scarce, little more than three percent of the population, and can be hard to get to know, since they tend not to share their innermost thoughts or their powerful emotional reactions except with their loved ones. They are highly private people, with an unusually rich, complicated inner life. Friends or colleagues who have known them for years may find sides emerging which come as a surprise. Not that Counselors are flighty or scattered; they value their integrity a great deal, but they have mysterious, intricately woven personalities which sometimes puzzle even them.

Blessed with vivid imaginations, Counselors are often seen as the most poetical of all the types, and in fact they use a lot of poetic imagery in their everyday language. Their great talent for language-both written and spoken-is usually directed toward communicating with people in a personalized way. Counselors are highly intuitive and can recognize another's emotions or intentions - good or evil - even before that person is aware of them. Counselors themselves can seldom tell how they came to read others' feelings so keenly. This extreme sensitivity to others could very well be the basis of the Counselor's remarkable ability to experience a whole array of psychic phenomena.

Nira grinned at Arryn and then looked over at the girl who was standing nearby and had introduced herself as Zane. "I'm Nira," she said to Zane in a voice that was trying its best to be a whisper, as she supplemented her introduction with a wave of her fingers. She devoted a moment to looking at Zane's flitt, before looking forward again and paying attention to Al'dai as he spoke. She waited until the herd of other candidates had surged forward and gotten their tablets before picking her way to the front herself.

Grabbing a wax tablet of her own, she returned to her spot, taking her familiar posture over a tablet; peering forward and tapping the stylus to her teeth in contemplation. Marking the boxes took some time as she considered each question, but going row and column to add all the scores together made her feel at home. Each time she looked up from her work she half expected to see seven crates of numbweed jars or twelve rolls of hide in front of her instead of the studious backs of her colleagues. When she had completed her tabulations she gave a slight nod, allowing for the accuracy of the assessment.

Atlen finally settled Leno onto her lap, out of sight out of the other firelizards. He rumbled softly though, still agitated so she only looked up when the boy sat down beside her, relief washed through her. At least she wouldn't look so awkward, she almost missed the words whispered by the young man when Leno struck out a wing against her hand trying to wriggle free of her loose grasp. "No, you're fine." She whispered back and shifted so that he could have a bit more space, "I'm Atlen."

The test seemed simple enough. She'd seen them taken at the Harperhall by curious journeymen and a few other apprentices. Even so she worried. It was one thing to play around with the information, a complete other to actually have it applied in her life. The thought flitted through her mind that perhaps she was fooling herself and they'd look at her score and tell her that she couldn't impress because it wasn't high enough in on category or something strange like that. She bit her lip in worry but as the numbers added up she was actually quite interested by the results.

Tavian's face brightened again when Al'dai mentioned a test. Maybe this was it, the formula for what made the best kind of candidate. He didn't quite understand that there was no "right" answer here. Surely some of the results would indicate that one was more suitable to being a rider. As he collected his tablet and returned to his seat, Tavian wasn't sure whether to be excited or terrified. On the one hand, he was fascinated by the concept that personality traits could be quantified, but on the other hand, if he got the wrong result it might mean that he would never Impress.

The only thing to do was to fill out the questions honestly and hope for the best. Tavian frowned in concentration as he worked through the questions. They were all based on personal assessment, of course, but figuring himself out was a sort of problem, just like anything else. When he was finished, he tallied up the results in his head. Now he had the numbers, but what did they mean?

Tavian:
INTJ
Percentage:
89 38 38 67
# very expressed introvert
# moderately expressed intuitive personality
# moderately expressed thinking personality
# distinctively expressed judging personality

"Problem-solving is highly stimulating to Masterminds, who love responding to tangled systems that require careful sorting out."
"Many INTJs do not readily grasp the social rituals; for instance, they tend to have little patience and less understanding of such things as small talk and flirtation...Perhaps the most fundamental problem, however, is that INTJs really want people to make sense."

A Candidate lesson? This should prove interesting, if just to meet all the rest of her fellows. Yithel had gotten over not Impressing, and emerged from it more determined than ever. She was confident that now she would Impress, perhaps with the next clutch. And what would she Impress? Who knew. Not as important as Impressing itself. Maybe lessons would help her Impress at the next clutch, though Yithel strongly suspected they would be a slew of things she already knew, coupled with some common sense advice on how NOT to get mauled by an angry dragonet on the actual day.

Yithel had actually taken the test before. It made sense- she was from the Harper Hall, and the entire principle was very interesting. Still, if she had to take it again, she would, though she remembered her results from the last test fairly well. But how would the dragonriders take the knowledge and apply it to them? May as well ask. Sitting here quietly filling out information without any clue as to how it would be fully utilized didn't seem to be the most intelligent of activities. Information was valuable.

"How will this information actually be applied to us?" she said, once she had finished writing down her answers in a neat, if rather flowery, hand. Writing well had been one of her specialities, and it was completely and utterly useless at the Weyr. She would take the chance to practice, and hope that some of her fellow Candidates saw how her writing was, and expression admiration. It was worth hoping for, right? Eventually Yithel would have to get to know this group, and hopefully she would be given slightly more time to do so. It would nice to make friends... and actually know who everyone was. She hadn't even gotten a handle on all the names of the last batch of Candidates. She needed them now.
