Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

It was just past lunch hour, during which Merilla had been preparing for the afternoon lesson, which would be given in the common room today. She'd gathered all the hides she needed with the help of Al'dai, who had graciously agreed to speak at this lesson. Imri, too, fluttered around as if he could help, although Merilla shoed him away from the hides every time he got close. That flitt was good for spying, and little else.

"Welcome, candidates," she announced and stepped to the front of the room once they had entered and seated themselves. Imri settled lazily on her shoulder. She glanced towards Al'dai and offered a small smile before launching into the lesson. "Being a dragonrider seems like a fairly simple job: you ride your dragon and you fight thread. But in truth, it is much more complex. Dragonriders are diplomats as well. Each and every one of you represent this Weyr and thus you must learn how to properly communicate with holders and crafters.

"In addition, you must be able to work well with other members of your wing. Al'dai, if you are not familiar with him, is Wingleader of Sandstone Wing, and thus is quite experienced in matter such as these. He has agreed to help with this lesson, so I expect you give him full attention." Merilla turned to the Wingleader and gestured for him to speak, sending another half smile his way.

Dart was excited.

No, he was more than excited: he was thrilled. He’d only just been accepted as a candidate at Igen when he’d pissed off the Weyrwoman so he hadn’t had any chance to attend lessons. But at Vaioa his clean slate still stood and he was trying, for the most part, to keep it that way. Those few things he’d been involved in had been harmless fun. Nothing that could get him expelled from candidacy. And from what he’d heard, Merilla wouldn’t hesitate to kick a troublemaker out. So he fully intended to keep himself on the down-low until he Impressed.

Fully aware of Denz’s glare boring into the back of his head, Daart turned and offered his bully a wide grin. “You look surprised to see me here!” If the older boy had expected his little stunt with the fire lizards to drive him away from candidacy, well he was stupider than he looked. Bootstrap hissed at Denz from his shoulder and the other boy’s two fire lizards hissed right back at him. Daart resisted the urge to stick his tongue out at the other boy. Denz wouldn’t dare hurt him here in front of two dragonriders – especially a bronzerider – but he’d find a way to make Daart miserable afterwards. And get away with it too.

“Why would I care if you were here or not?” Denz answered smoothly. “I barely know you. Now if you’d excuse me, I want to focus on the lesson.” Unless they looked carefully, no one would notice the glint of malice in the candidate’s eyes. Judging by the look, Daart had better find a damn good hiding place, or he wouldn’t be fit for any chores for a week. And faranth only knew what that would do to his chances at remaining in candidacy.

Instead of dwelling on that, Daart settled in to listen to Merilla, eager to hear what she and the bronzerider had to say. They had his complete and undivided attention. For everything they said to him would affect his chances of becoming the greatest dragonrider he could be. Impression, and what came after, was far more important that worrying about what sort of hell Denz might next inflict upon him.

Tis the season for santa dragons
Arrryn shook some of the sand from her skirt before entering the Candidate Barracks, her first lesson was today and she actually a little bit excited about it. Her lessons at home, once she no longer needed Harper lessons, had consisted of sewing and other female oriented tasks. The Common Room was already beginning to fill with candidates. Not wanted to be left standing for the lesson Arryn quickly found an empty seat, shooting the candidate next to her a quick smile. Hi, hope you weren't saving this for anyone.

She turned her gaze toward where Merilla and a Dragonrider stood. Some hides were nearby, part of the lesson perhaps. She wondered what the lesson would be. Well there was a rider present so maybe dragon care or some info about thread, or going between or... diplomacy?! Arryn felt a bit let down and was tempted to shut out the rest of the lesson. That really wasn't the best attitude to take, especially with her very first lesson. Sighing ever so softly she forced herself to focus on Merilla. If there was the chance that she did impress this could be helpful. She new some holders weren't always to fond of Dragonriders -coughhermomcough- and it was a bit naive to think riders just flew about all day long. The man Merilla introduced as Al'dai looked every inch the dragonrider. Tall, muscular, good looking... he probably did have quite a bit of experience with diplomacy.

Kidnapped by the Holidays
Chittery's tail latched onto Telimnon's neck, nearly choking him. The green was obviously afraid of the hissing firelizards on the shoulders of the boys nearby. He couldn't blame her really. Who really wanted to be around a whole group of hissing flitts? The creatures could be vicious when they set their minds to it. However, little Chittery seemed to believe that choking him would somehow protect her.

"Ow, ow, ow," Tel tugged at her tail. Thankfully it loosened, leaving the little firelizard shaking on his shoulder. "Calm down," he whispered, "they aren't out to get you." He wasn't sure if she understood that at all, but at least she stopped shaking as Merilla began to speak.

He was excited to learn that today's lesson would be taught by a Wingleader. So far most of the candidate lessons had been focused on caring for dragons or scroll learning. There came a point, way too quickly, when information was just being rehashed again and again. Maybe today they'd learn how the Wings actually worked, rather than just the history of the Wings and Wingleaders of Vaioa.

Nira had been resting on her bed, gazing idly up at the ceiling. She was still becoming accustomed to the idea that the ground did not sway gently beneath her and water did not lap at the walls of her new accommodations. She had arrived a-dragonback the previous morning, her small allotment of possessions in her trusty rucksack. They had not been shy about setting her to work almost immediately, allowing her a moment to locate her room and set her bag down before shuttling her off to the kitchens to help with breakfast clean up.

She hadn't been added to the official chore roster yet, something that the Candidate Master was quick to assure her would be rectified shortly. Her first afternoon had been given over to a tour of the barracks and a brief outline of expectations and codes of conduct. This morning, she had been sent to the infirmary, where she had happily sorted through vials and ampoules of numbweed and fellis, surgical tools, and bed linens until lunch time.

She must have dozed, for the next thing she heard was the sound of footsteps and rustling in the common room. Pulling herself upright and giving her limbs a quick shake to inspire them into wakefulness, she strolled out into the common room to find out what might be going on. She recognized Merilla, who was amassing supplies and conversing with a man who had the look of a dragonrider. She saw that her fellow candidates were arriving and sitting, attentive looks settling onto their faces. She sidled past two young men who were clearly in the midst of some sort of...conversation, scooted around a boy with a frantic fire lizard, and sat with an empty seat on either side of her. When Arryn scooted in and sat beside her with a lightly apologetic smile, Nira waved it off and threw back a friendly smile of her own. "I'm Nira," she said quietly, for Merilla and the other fellow had turned to face the room, "glad you joined me."

When Merilla spoke and introduced Al'dai, Nira flashed a small smile of self-congratulation. She was getting better at recognizing dragonriders, at least. Like her classmates, she leaned forward a bit, eager to hear what Al'dai might have to teach them.

Tavian was more than ready for this lesson. He didn't know much about dragons, except for what he had observed, and he wanted to be prepared for the Hatching. He still didn't completely grasp the concept that there was no way to "solve" a Hatching in order to Impress, and he was just waiting for the right piece of information that would unlock the secret. Maybe he would learn it at this lesson. He was smiling as he walked into the lesson room, his eyes bright with excitement.

Tavian took a seat near the front of the room, watching Merilla expectantly. As she began to speak, however, his expression changed from excitement to nervousness. Diplomacy sounded like it would involve talking to people, and he sometimes wasn't very good at that. Sure, he could start a conversation, but it always seemed to end badly. He lifted his left hand to his mouth and started worrying at his thumbnail as he watched the bronzerider, wondering what Al'dai had to share. Maybe the Wingleader had some tips that would make this easier.

Atlen had entered and found most of the chairs already occupied or generally taken over by the others, rather than make a fuss about it she sat on the floor and leaned against the side of one of the couches. It didn't bother her, she didn't figure that it mattered where she sat as long as she was there to hear whatever Merilla and Al'dai had to say. As long as they both didn't care, she worried slightly. Maybe they'd think it was disrespectful or prude that she sat on the floor rather than on a chair. But there was nothing to be done for it now without making a fool of herself. So she resigned herself to her spot.

Her blue flitt Leno gripped her shoulder with more force than necessary and showed his teeth in the direction of the firelizards who were making a decidedly loud ruckus. He didn't care that they might be larger than him, if they even dared come near his person he would have something to say about it. Atlen stroked his back softly "Easy baby." she carefully soothed him before he could become more disruptive, he wrapped his tail possessively around her wrist and mantled his wings but his hissing quieted to a mere vibration through his small form. She looked with more interest at why her flitt was reacting this way and finds a young man picking on a much smaller boy. She bristled with rage but thankfully the candidate master began speaking before she can say anything particularly nasty to the older kid.

Haylian
Candidate
As had the the candidate just before him, Haylian had arrived just a tad bit late. But with all the eagerness and anticipation the candidates had usually shown when it came to lessons, well, a few seconds late could register as a billion turns late. Though thankfully, the eyes in the room would've been set on the other candidate -Atlen, he'd believed- before reaching him. He tried to be smart about it and glance around with a smile as he walked around, even if he'd only really been searching out for a seat.

Of course they were taken.

And so he went to Plan B: following the girl over and down onto the floor. It was better to feel a fool with someone else than by yourself, right? And boy was it awkward. He'd hardly known the girl, hardly known anyone for that matter, so what had resulted was that awkward freezing of time, before he'd try to break it with a few whispered words, cautious of Merilla and Al'dai.

"Hey, hope you don't mind I tag along?" At that he'd wave faintly, to both Atlen and her flitt, hoping they wouldn't mind.

As curious as he was to meet the candidate even more, he was even more curious about the lesson. They'd entered at the tail end, and hadn't a clue about dragons, but he was hoping today's lesson would given some helpful insight.

The opposite of Tavian; Firyn had purposefully arrived in the common room a little early just so he could get a seat near the back. He hated the feeling of having pairs of eyes on his back, and being at the front as too attention-grabbing for his liking. The redhead wasn’t in the far corner or anything and as more Candidates arrived he ended up more in the middle after all. He even took to counting their numbers as the others arrived. There were definitely more than just those that had been recently left on the Sands. He was glad he’d arrived early enough to not sit on the floor.

He’d been sitting with his head resting on one hand when Merilla came in and instantly sat up as the Candidate Master started speaking. Diplomacy? Firyn guessed that anyone in the room with Harper experience would have a better idea of that than the rest of them. He got along with other people well enough and was fine with following instructions, but he wouldn’t want to be in the middle of any debates. He’d never questioned any of his tutors at the Healer Hall.

Curiosity made him wonder how creative Merilla and Al’dai were going to be. Diplomacy was not exactly the most interesting of topics for Candidates!

So the hatching of the senior gold was over, and Zane had walked away from it. Unharmed, but also unimpressed. At this point she wasn’t sure which was worse. Would others make fun of her for standing again? So far she didn’t recognize any of the current candidate’s in the room as returning from Lisenyth’s hatching. She had a stomach ache from being so nervous. She wrapped her arms about herself in a protective manner. The only thing that she’d come away with recently was a blue flitt. She loved him dearly, and he was far more social than she. She’d named the little guy Volcom. It was rare that he left her side, as if he understood he was needed for support. Presently he was perched on her shoulder, looking around at the new faces about them.

Zane recognized Merilla of course; she was the candidate master that had taught her prior. She listened to what the young woman said, trying her best to focus. She couldn’t stop thinking about Cayden though. She looked around, feeling as if without the girl here the group lost its charm. Likely Cayden had never been described as having charm before, but to Zane she possessed... something. Whatever that something was, Zane could only best describe it as her own personal charm. She smiled a bit at the thought, and Volcom inclined his head to glance at His. The little blue still had a lot of growing to do, not that he’d get very big. He would be average-sized, same as all the other blues flittering about the Weyr. Of course he was different in that he was hers, and she cared for him deeply.
The brunette girl wasn’t too sure what Merilla had them here to talk about.

Something to do with what kind of person they were meant to be, or were? There needing to be social? She tried to do a better job of listening, moving closer. She brushed against Arryn on accident, quickly apologizing. She kept her gaze down respectfully, looking up only to observe Al’dai. He had been introduced as a Wingleader by Merilla, and Zane was pretty sure she’d seen the man around before. Volcom chirruped to the Wingleader. She shushed him, not wanting him to be seen as a disturbance. Well, Al'dai seemed to have her flitt’s respect. Peculiar. She usually respected those of rank, and even those whom weren’t. Zane wasn’t the type to judge, and figured everyone was owing a bit of something...
