Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Al'dai leaned back in his chair, looking out over the surroundings. The Hall was decked out for the celebratory feast, and the usual array of offerings was laid out on the far table. Al'dai thought he'd never cease to be thankful for all the food. After living through no tithes last winter, he'd come to appreciate the food more often. They'd never get these vegetables and fish otherwise.

Chattering bodies filled the hall, with riders and candidates alike sitting side by side with no regard for which wing usually sat at which table. Gathered at the closest table, at the end nearest the council table, sat a group of 8 riders, some surrounded by family who had been able to make it to the ceremony.

The dining and chattering had been going on for a while now, and Al'dai was growing restless. It was nearly time, and T'ech had better do the trick right. Plus, he was deeply interested to see if any of the Weyrlings would be requesting transfers. He hadn't had problems with Faile, Eiric, and Olayla, but it was possible they would feel more comfortable in one of the other wings.

Finally T'ech got to his feet and extended his arms toward the crowd and the babble died down almost immediately. Al'dai leaned forward with interest. The man launched into a speech, as per custom, but it was short. Al'dai knew that T'ech was not comfortable with much attention on him; no doubt he'd want to get it over with as quickly as possible.

Then he was calling the names of the graduating class. Eleonora of Garnet Lenath; Olayla of Grey Eyoith; Andreya of Grey Eriardith; Cl'sen of Blue Rhoth; Eiric of Blue Sirith; T'lsin of Green Halieth; Faile of Green Bayluth; and Mattiee of Green Cerith. One by one they approached the dias, to loud applause; T'ech pinned their new knots to their tunics and held their hand between his own while administering the oath. Al'dai watched with a combination of interest and irritation. At least, so far, things seemed to be going smoothly.

(Here's how it's going to go. If you are one of the 8 Weyrlings, you MUST post in this thread in order to remain active and be added to the rider and wing listings. If not, your character will be deemed inactive. Otherwise, you are free to have your character do whatever you want: eating, talking with others, taking the oath to protect the people of pern, etc.)

Olayla's legs were shaking slightly as her name was called and she walked up to the dias. Glancing back once more to her mother and brothers who watched with delight as their daughter and sister would finally become a true rider. We have come far to finally be here. Do not be afraid. Olayla squared her shoulders, lifted her chin, and was able to look T'ech in the eye while he pinned her new knots onto her shoulder. Eyoith was right, she mused inwardly while she recited back the words she had painstakingly memorized over the last month. And though her thoughts were there with her dragon, her mind was also elsewhere. It was hard to believe a scarce two turns ago she had wound up with her life turned on its head. She hadn't expected to be searched, not in a million years. She hadn't expected to Impress Jasper or meet her best friend Senyrae. The bandit attack had been a total shock and the subsequent kidnapping had left a long thin scar down her back from the tip of a raider's blade. She wondered briefly how the young man she had been captured with was doing, as far as she knew Telimnon was still a candidate. She hadn't seen his name anywhere on the weyrling roster so he had to be.

There was her first egg touching, not realizing that Eyoith was there waiting for her. Her shock and surprise when the tiny grey had come up to her with rainbows in her eyes and fear in her heart. It had been the happiest day of her life, (though maybe this day was the second happiest). The both of them had grown a lot in the past turn and a half. Eyo more in size than Ola, but the girl had matured beyond her years. Part of her would always remember Eyoith as the tiny little baby asking for her first meal. She understood now why the older riders looked at weyrlings the way they did. While weyrlings wanted their dragons to grow so they could fly, they never quite realize how truly precious they were when they were small.

Just like that she spoke the final line and T'ech released her hand, she gave a short wave to the applauding crowd. I am a rider now. the understanding washed over her and she had to turn back towards the table where her family was waiting to hide the tears that gathered in her eyes from the being seen by the people gathered. High above the weyr where she was flying, (she had been too excited to stay on the ground) Eyoith crooned. You have always been so. But now we are ready to fight alongside the others.

Olayla's mother, Omala, the woman she was so closely named after and the woman who had taken it upon herself to raise her three children without the aid of their father, stood up and wrapped her arms tightly around her daughter. Olayla returned the hug and buried her face in her mother's similarly colored hair. She refused to let the tears run free, not in front of her family that now didn't include just her mother and brothers, but all the riders and dragons from her weyrling class and also the six firelizards who had become her constant companions. But really it was the entire weyr that was her family now. "I'm so proud of you." Omala whispered.

Olayla pulled out of the hug and beamed at her mother, all trace that she was going to cry was now gone. And it was a good thing too, for as Omala took her hand and led her back to the table she was dive-bombed by the flock, they settled on her shoulders and head and even tiny Danu clutched the front of her shirt. Olayla laughed loudly as they crooned and nuzzled her, "I love you all too. Now off of me before you make a scene." she gave the order with love and Onyx and Zircon returned to perch on Rumal's shoulders and the older greens on her oldest brother, Okero's, head. Omala took Danu and cradled her in her hands. Ola held Jasper in her arms and took her seat again, once everyone from her weyrling class was done taking their oaths she would wander off and try to find someone else she knew. Perhaps A'yar if she could find him. She wanted to thank him for the advice he had given so long ago. She would also have to find Al'dai at some point to tell him that they would be remaining in Sandstone wing. She was aware that she had the option of transferring wings but even presenting the option to Eyoith had left the grey in a bit of a shock. Eyoith didn't want to change now that she was accustomed to drilling with her wingmates. Olayla quickly came to realize that she was also perfectly happy where she was.

But that would come later, right now she would bask in the joy of her success and worry about fighting thread when the time came.

Halieth had been a fountain of happiness all day, an endless gush of excitement running in the back of T'lsin's head. Even now, as he stood on the dais with his weyrling class, the green's chatter bounced back and forth between his ears, her mind voice almost fizzy with intensity. She understood the importance of the ceremony, and what it meant. The next time the skies churned with Thread, she and her T'lsin would be in the wings searing it.

Pride burned in his chest as the Weyrleader - and now, his Wingleader - pinned his new knots to his shoulder, and for once, T'lsin allowed his triumphant smile to blaze unrestrained across his face, eyes crinkling with its intensity. It is our time! Halieth bugled, wings fanning from her perch on her ledge. It is our turn to protect everyone!

He finished his oath smoothly, dropping his hand from T'ech's and lifting his chin to receive the shower of praise from the Weyr, tucking his arms behind his back as he waited for the rest of his class to finish. Once they were released, T'lsin's eyes cut to the small gathering of people behind him. His father and two of his uncles waited silently, and he turned to face them, smile slipping only slightly. He hadn't seen any of these men since he'd been Searched, and a small part of him questioned their presence. Tylir reached out and clasped his son's bicep, and opened his mouth, though no words came. The man seemed to pause, as if to gather himself, and finally said, "We're proud of you. Very, very proud."

T'lsin blinked somewhat owlishly, before nodding, clearing his throat and looking to his uncles. The taller one clapped him heartily on the back, shouting something about being in the weyrleader's wing, while the other grabbed a hold of T'lsin's shoulders in his excitement, asking if he could meet his green. All of the anxiety he hadn't known he'd had dissolved away, and he found himself laughing, nodding. "Later, once I've done all the hobknobbing I have to do. Eat, I can smell that you've already gotten into the wine."

Once his family had released him, he turned and looked out across the crowd, searching for Cl'sen.

also, i can kill you with my brain
It wasn't too hard to be overwhelmed today. Eriardith was pleased and for once wasn't half as timid as she normally was. Today they would be regaled as full riders. No longer would they be Weyrlings. Though still the least of riders, they were now one up from Weyrlings. Or would be as soon as the human half of the duo said her oath. It was exciting, nerve-wracking, even, to think about all of the ordeals of Weyrlinghood as almost over. Just the thought made her stomach roll and her stomach didn't normally roll.

Leah looked at her encouragingly. Her sister was her biggest fan and always had been. The feelings were mutual, of course. But bonding to a wher and the 'wherlinghood' that came with it wasn't like Impressing to a dragon. Both sisters knew that. And Leah's green wher had been fully grown when she'd bonded to it. Andreya's gray had hatched and they had to learn together. Sometimes Andy even joked that they had to learn out to eat right. It was true, of course; slowly, Eriardith had learned how to kill her own meals. Now she was a self-reliant creature who nevertheless relied on Andy as well. And now Eri slept through the night. Andy would never forget her first 'night' with her gray, who woke up frequently and had to be fussed over to no end.

The thought made Andy smile as she stood and approached the Weyrleader. T'ech gave her her knots. Even Eriardith spoke the oath back, though only through Andy's mind. The gray was too nervous and timid to speak to anyone other than Andy or dragons. She rarely spoke to others outside her rider, not even her rider's twin. It took forever to get to this point in time--almost two years--but now that she'd spoken the oath it seemed like it had only been a few seconds worth of time.

And then it was over.

The cheers went up all around and the fully-made riders returned to their seats. Leah catapulted into her sister, hugging her fiercely. "Congrats!" She cried.

Andy let her hug as long as she wanted before stepping away. "Let's go congratulate others."

U Jelly Bro?
You're nervous, Rhoth commented to the lad who was fidgeting by his side.

Of course I'm nervous! Cl'sen said, fiddling with his fingers and biting down on to one of his knuckles. It was Graduation, after all. How is it you're not?

The now fully grown blue shrugged. I guess I'm just not. We will be fighting soon. It is natural. But it is nice to know we are all grown up. He puffed out his chest in emphasis. From the tiny little dragonet to this now large and bulky creature, Rhoth had grown immensely. Both physically and mentally. He would prove to be a very capable fighter when they were to fly.

Tytoth's is calling you. Cl'sen sucked in a breath, waiting as each of his fellow classmates stepped up to the Weyrleader. His wingleader. And then it was his turn.

On somewhat shaky legs, the newly fledged rider nodded to T'ech as his new knots were pinned to his shoulder. And just like that, it was over. Cheers and clapping erupted from the crowd that had gathered for this occasion, and the anxieties the bluerider felt fled out of his mind. He was a rider. A true rider now.

He managed to spot his mother amongst the crowd, who immediately pulled him into a hug. "I'm so proud of you, sweetheart. I can't believe you're a full dragonrider now..." His siblings patted him on the back, grinning like the fools they were. "Congrats, little bro. You'll be watching out for us, right?" Cl'sen smiled. "Of course I will. Wouldn't be doing my job now, would I?"

His father, whom had just approached the group, stared at his son for a moment, as if assessing what happened. Then, he gave him a hug around the shoulders, grinning. "You did good, boy. You did good."

Grinning, Cl'sen waved goodbye to his family as they went out to greet his dragon. Spotting his wingmate, he couldn't help but sweep him into one of his rare bear hugs. "We did it, T'lsin. We did it!"

Weyrling
They were the first clutch of Vaioa, and thus the first graduates. Faile was thrilled to have made it through Weyrlinghood, and she wasn't the only one. Bayluth was practically preening herself over this event. It was their time to shine, today. She still recalled another feast. One that felt like it had only been yesterday. The feast the day she Impressed her beloved Bayluth.

Brushing a strand of blond hair from her eyes, she realized she'd not stopped smiling since she'd entered the dining hall. Why shouldn't she? It was an accomplishment to be proud of!

We did it, mine! We all did it. Eyoith and Rhoth and all of us!

The green's tone was elated, and Faile shared that elation with her. Her family was here for the event, proud as could be of their daughter. Her little sister and parents shared a table with her, and discussed her accomplishment and how the past couple of Turns had been. Upon their arrival they'd met Bayluth, finally, for the first time. Her younger sister, with eyes shining in admiration, announced she wanted to ride green too. Well, Faile couldn't blame her. Her green was her life, after all.

As the night went on, she had a chance to talk to all her new fellow riders. She wondered what wing they'd be in. Thread was scary, sure. But she was glad that they'd finally get to put their training to use protecting Pern! She settled into bed with a bit of a buzz from the couple glasses of wine she'd had, and a smile on her face. They were in their own weyr now, and tomorrow there would be no lessons. It felt good to be a dragonrider of Pern.
