Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

He didn't mean to do it. Honestly, he didn't want to but he couldn't help it! It was the perfect opportunity and Cl'sen just did not want to pass it up.

You do know that you'll be in big trouble, right?

Thanks for stating the obvious.

Rhoth chuckled in the back of his mind, watching with amusement to see Cl'sen check back around the entrance to make sure no one had followed him in his haste. Clutched between his hands was a basket, filled to the brim with bubbly pies of all assorted smells and flavors. The cooks were too busy to pay the weyrling mind as it was right before dinner, and had more to cook with the abundance of food since tithes were restored.

But now...

Cl'sen gazed at the basket, remorse creeping around. This was supposed to be for everyone, and look what he did. What a sharding dimglow he had been! What was he bloody thinking?!

But they looked so good...

Peering around again, Cl'sen dubbed it safe and plucked a treat right into his mouth. So good and sweet... He hadn't tasted anything quite as delicious as these particularly bubbly pies. Whomever baked them had a talent for making them.

Hey! You could at least share! Rhoth dive bombed for the goodies, jaws gulping down at least half of the stolen treats. Rhoth! Save some for me! You never share! Again the blue went for them, resulting in a tug-of-war that snapped the basket and sent bubbly pies all over the place.

Oh jeez... Everything was a mess. Crumbs and filling spilled about and basket threads all over the place. What now? The evidence of their crime - Your crime!... Cl'sen's crime was apparent for all to see. There was no way of getting out of this now.

The change that had come over the Weyr when tithes were restored was astounding. Nerilan had come during the food shortage, so she had never seen the kitchens in all their glory. She had quickly adjusted to the meager supplies and the recipes that stretched their food as far as it could go. Now, with tithes back in places, she could see just how richly dragonriders ate when they were given the respect they were due. And the kitchens were glorious. They were bustling with activity and Nerilan found her own cooking knowledge expanding greatly as she assisted with different recipes.

Still, nothing beat baking bubbly pies. Today's batch was finished, packed up, all ready to be handed out, so Nerilan moved on to another task as dinner hour moved ever closer. She'd been shuffled off to mash and season the tubers and set to her task with pleasure. Overhead, Salera circled, trilling happily as she watched her bonded work. The tiny green's soprano warbling made Nerilan's task all the more pleasant.

After a while, Salera wandered off, probably to visit the rest of the kitchen workers or to play with her firelizard friends. Nerilan didn't pay much attention to it, as it was no uncommon occurrence. However, when Salera suddenly popped back into view in front of her face Nerilan jumped, nearly dropped the bowl of tubers she was carrying in her surprise.

"Sal! Jays!" A vision of bubbly pies filled her mind until she shooed the green firelizard away. Nerilan set down the tubers and whirled around to glare at the creature. "Salera, you know better," she chided. Salera merely chittered at her and zoomed off. Following her with her eyes, Nerilan noticed something - something very wrong.

The bubbly pies were gone. "What!" Panic rushing through her, she hurried to the spot where she had left the basket. Gone! "Sal?" She looked to the firelizard, who squawked and offered her a blurry image of a young man carrying the basket, which was in clearer focus. Anger now replaced panic and Nerilan stomped from the kitchens, following her green as she darted down the tunnel.

Salera popping out from between and shrieking unhappily was all the warning Cl'sen would get before Nerilan burst out from the doorway to the lower caverns, murder in her eyes and a tuber-covered wooden spoon still in her hand. She caught sight of Cl'sen, of Rhoth, and of the incriminating mess, and pointed the utensil accusingly.

"You!" Crossing the distance between them, she got right up in the weyrling's face, drawing herself up to her full height and still falling much shorter than the man. "Not only do you steal my bubbly pies, but you destroy them too! I worked all crackdusted day on those! And you've sharding annihilated them! I have never witnessed anything so childish! You wherrybait! Deadglow!" Her voice rose continuously higher until she was practically shrieking at the younger man, punctuating her words by waving around her hands and the wooden spoon.

"You are going to clean this up! Then you are going to march back to the lower caverns with me and apologize to everyone! And you!" Now she whirled on Rhoth, jabbing forth the spoon. "Don't think you're getting off easy! I know you've got your super special mind bond, so don't pretend you didn't know what was going on! Don't even try to play innocent! You are going to apologize to me. Directly! Don't even think about trying to make your rider say it for you!"

Of course, Nerilan had absolutely no authority to be making commands. She was just a general kitchen worker, nothing more. But shardit, those were her bubbly pies! Hazel eyes narrowing into slits, Nerilan's voice lowered to a deathly quiet. She poked Cl'sen in the stomach with her spoon. "I hope those give you the worst stomach ache of your life."

It was the screech of someone's accusing voice that stopped the poor weyrling from attempting to clean up what he possibly could. "Ah!" He dropped the basket from his hands, jolting up to is feet and whirling around to face Nerilan with a look that had "guilty" writtenall over it.

"I-I-I didn't mean to-! I mean, i-it's not what it-" Cl'sen couldn't finish his sentence, terrified when the shorter woman strode up to him, eyes narrowed in accusation and looking ready to kill. It would have been funny seeing the girl glower up at the boy from a good foot shorter height, but right now he just wanted go crawl in a corner and get away from the woman's wrath.

Eyes widened with each insult she threw at him, muscles beginning to tense and utterly failing at placating the kitchen worker. This was someone he did not want to mess with. Pinned down, Cl'sen sent a look towards Rhoth, eyes pleading. Help me out here!

I'm not the one that- But not even the dragon was spared from Nerilan's wrath, cocking his head back as if to avoid whatever she was going to throw at him. What? he squeaked out. For once in his life Rhoth was at an utter loss as to what to do. He never had someone yell at him. Never! Clearly she meant business, and the blue had the mind to take a step back or two away with the utensil in her hands. The pair wouldn't be surprised if she started attacking them with it. Even if it was just a spoon.

Cl'sen still hadn't had a chance to speak out with all the yelling a screaming going on, getting them a few curious looks sent towards them. Oh shards, but he had screwed up big time.

Hands raised in acquiescence (more to keep the spoon away from his face), Cl'sen finally got his words out. "L-Look. I-I'm really sorry, and I'm sorry for being wherrybait and deadglow." He lowered his head, truly embarrassed beyond belief. "I'm really, truly sorry. I'll clean up and head in to apologize."

It took another moment before Rhoth added in, I'm sorry too. We were both at fault, and for that I apologize.

The pair began the tedious task of picking up after themselves, silence stretching between the trio. Fidgeting, Cl'sen said, "I-If it makes you feel any better, they were really good." Suck-up. "N-No, really! You must have a natural talent or something."

Nerilan's eyes narrowed as she regarded the young man, who finally managed to stutter out an apology. That's right! You better apologize! she thought to herself, pleased that she had successfully intimidated the dragonrider even though he was nearly a foot taller than her. Shards, he looked well and truly scared! Of her! If she wasn't so angry right now, she would have been tickled to death at the notion of it.

Rhoth's apology, however, did the trick. Her gaze snapped to the blue and she blinked in disbelief, not sure whether or not she had heard what she thought she heard. Yes, she'd demanded an apology from the dragon, but she hadn't actually expected him to comply. Despite herself, she grinned suddenly and let loose a silly, squeaking laugh before managing to get herself back under control.

"I didn't think he would actually-- I've never had a dragon talk to me before!" Nerilan said by way of explanation, hardly noticing that the rider had already started picking up the mess. She cleared her throat then. Shardit, she was supposed to be angry still! One look at the mess that used to be her pies and Nerilan knew, these two weren't getting off easy, regardless of how exciting it was to have the blue talk to her. How strange it had been, too, to have a foreign presence in her mind. It was like nothing she had ever imagined!

She looked at the rider, then, as he complimented her on the pies. Half of her was stubbornly wanting to remain furious at the pair, while the other part of her was deeply pleased with the compliment. It did make her feel better. At least someone had appreciated the pies.

Still. Everyone could have enjoyed them if it weren't for this deadglow and his dragon. "Thanks," she said, stiffly.

It was the sudden change from angry, scary woman with a potential weapon in her hand to a stuttering and laughing girl that had Cl'sen pause for a moment and truly assess the situation. She... was angry at them, but then not? "Wait, what?" The woman had never had a dragon speak to her before? Despite the situation, Cl'sen was immensely curious with this development. How does one who spent so long here never have heard a dragon's voice before?

Uh... thank you, I guess? the blue said to Nerilan. Clearly, Rhoth had no way at looking at this either.

After a moment of calming down, she was back into her "You better get this done soon, or else!" mode, making the weyrling return to his job she had given to him. He didn't want to make her any more mad by looking unproductive.

A grin spread across Cl'sen's face when she thanked him for the compliment. They were getting somewhere! If but a bit stiffly, but it was something, nonetheless.

"No problem!" he chirped, spilling bits of the mess from his previous excursion in his excitement. "S-Sorry." He went back to his task, glancing up at Nerilan now and again when he realized she wasn't leaving. Oh no, she would wait until he was done.

Why didn't you just say you've never had a dragon talk to you before? Rhoht questioned the kitchenworker admist all the crazy. If you just asked, I'm sure at least one would have wanted to talk to you! I wouldn't have minded! If he didn't want someone angry at him, Rhoth was always good at sucking up to said person.

Oh, shard it all. Nerilan frowned to herself, noticing the blue weyrling pause when she'd uttered that stupid, ridiculous laugh. He'd probably stopped taking her seriously, then. She could see his confusion. She could hear it in the dragon's voice as well and had to suppress another smile, so amused was she that he was still talking to her.

Ohh, shaffit, bloody shaffit. Did that boy actually just grin at her? Indignation flared up. Nerilan's brow furrowed and her hands went to her hips. That boy wasn't allowed to be smiling right now. He should be trembling in terror and picking up her pies like his fardling life depended on it. But that smile said it all. That smile said that she wasn't so terrifying anymore.

Well, perhaps not completely. She noticed the stutter came back when he spilled some of the pie he'd gathered in his enthusiasm. He was still scrambling to clean up the mess. She could see him glancing up at her every now and then and made sure she was scowling every time he looked up.

Nerilan peered back to the blue as he questioned her. "I didn't demand an apology because I wanted a dragon to talk to me. I demanded an apology because I wanted a fardling apology!" she snapped. "Because you destroyed my bubbly pies, and shard it, you're going to take some crackdusted responsibility for it!"

Cl'sen cringed with the s nippiness in Nerilan's voice. Guess she sill wasn't over what he had done. The horrified blush on his face spread up to his ears, making them a bright red as he struggled to get the last bits of bubbly pie off the floor.

Rhoth had to huff at her words. I didn't mean it that way. I meant if you perhaps just asked someone they wouldn't have minded to talk. I didn't say your apology thing was what made you want to do it. The blue bent his head down to pick up a stray basket weave off the floor to hand to his bonded. I think that's all of them, Cl'sen.

Standing again at his full height, he made sure he kept a grip on the mess before stuttering out, "O-Okay, that should be all of it." Gnawing on his bottom lip, he said to her, "S-Should we g-get going then?"

Should I come too? You won't fit in there, Rhoth. You can apologize from out here, anyway. Settling down on the ground, the blue set out to relax. All right. Call me when you need me.

The lad took a few cautious steps before making clear he wasn't going to be dropping anything soon. He began heading inside, glancing at Nerilan now and again as if to say something, but stopped himself lest he make her angry.

Finally, after a much heated debate in his brain, he said to her quietly, "I-I... I really am sorry this happened, ma'am. I should have thought about what I was doing, and I'm sorry that I wasn't thinking properly." Gathering a bit more courage, Cl'sen continued, "If you won't forgive me, I-I understand. But I thought it would be better if you knew..."

He turned to look the other way and stare at the wall as they continued. Better to get off his chest now and not make her more angry.

The blue's words kept ringing in her mind, but she didn't know how to respond. So she'd misunderstood him, then. She wasn't about to apologize for it. That blue should have been groveling to her, just like his rider. But she pondered over his words, wondering if it really would have been that easy to talk to a dragon. People had always told her that it was a great honor if a dragon talked to you, and that it was rare, so it wasn't something she ever actively pursued. Arley kept her busy in the kitchens anyway; she hardly came into contact with dragons.

Still burning with anger under her furrowed brow, Nerilan's hazel eyes fixed on the weyrling as he straightened up. He announced he was done - stuttering all the way, poor kid - and she gave a curt nod. Time to go.

Turning on her heel, she whisked up her skirts and strode back into the lower caverns. Salera swooped down and landed on her shoulder, curling her green tail around the back of Nerilan's neck. From her perch, she watched Cl'sen with wheeling yellow-tinged eyes.

In the long silence that stretched on, Nerilan's anger slowly died. It would flare up every time she peeked over at the basket containing her destroyed pies, but for the most part, fury gave way to guilt. She felt bad for exploding on the poor kid; maybe it was how he had reacted that touched her. Jays, she'd never thought he'd be so afraid of her. And he was being so sharding polite about it, now. He apologized again, breaking the silence.

Nerilan sighed and frowned to herself, thinking. Then she spoke, her tone still acerbic. "You're sharding right, you weren't thinking," she said, but then her voice softened. "But don't worry; I'll forgive you. They're only pies."

She fell silent again, and remained so for a while, but stopped the boy right before the entrance to the dining hall. Through the doorway, she could see people sitting. An audience. She could force him out there with the nothing but the acid in her voice. She knew he was willing to confess his crime. But another sigh escaped her as she turned to face him.

"Look. I'm not going to make you apologize to everyone," she said flatly. The weyrling looked humiliated enough. And with that stutter - clearly, he had trouble speaking to people. Having to reveal such an embarrassing, childish lapse of judgement to a whole crowd - well, forcing him to do that would just be cruel.

The firelizard arriving in on the scene did little to ease Cl'sen's frayed nerves. It was one thing thing to have Rhoth around, but seeing those beady yellow eyes giving him a stare down was a different story. Please go away.. he thought in the back of his mind. The green did not hear his plea, so he settled with giving the wall an appraising look.

Her biting tone at his apology had Cl'sen flinch again, only to have his growing fear die off when she forgave him of his folly. Now that he had to give himself a pat on the back for. "T-Thank you. R-Really, though, they were good pies. I-I mean, before I made a mess of them, that is." Yes, they were quite tasty.

It hadn't taken long before they entered the Dining Hall. And... shells, there were people. People who didn't know what he had done. And they were all gonna hear him. This was going to be so sharding embarrassing.

And again, Nerilan amazed him. Maybe she wasn't as mean as he had originally thought. "O-Oh! Well, t-thank you for that. That would have been... well, really I don't want to think about it." He laughed sheepishly, the tips of his ears still burning bright red.

Clutching the remains, the pair made their way to the kitchen, where the cooks had turned a moment to face him. Best to get it over with, he thought as he gulped.

"U-Uh, I don't k-know if you've even s-seen what happened, but I-I made a mistake today. I took the bubbly pies you all m-must've worked really hard on," he placed the basket weaves and pies on the table, "a-and made a real mess. I-I really wasn't thinking. So, I wanted to apologize. I'm really sorry I've done this, and I-I hope you can all forgive me for it." You're turn.

I am sorry, too. We both made a mistake, and I realize it was wrong. Please, if there is anything we can do to make it up to you in some way let us know.

"Y-Yeah," Cl'sen finished. He turned a sideways glance to Nerilan, giving her a small grin. All things forgiven, right?

The boy's relief was palpable. For a moment there, a hint of a smile flickered across Nerilan's lips, but she forced it away stubbornly. She may have forgiven easily, but she was still unhappy! And the weyrling didn't deserve her mercy; he didn't deserve a smile.

She wandered over to the kitchens, ready to get back to work, and thought little about how Cl'sen continued following her. She figured he'd drop off the basket in the kitchens, then turn tail and run. After all, she'd released him from her punishment. There was no reason for him to stay.

So she halted and threw a surprised look over her shoulder when Cl'sen's timid voice rose over the din and clatter of the busy kitchen. She wheeled around to face him, her eyes wide, though she made no move to stop him. She couldn't help but feel a measure of respect for him for being so brave to apologize when she didn't require him too.

Now she couldn't help but give him a little smile. Well feck. This kid was just too adorable. She couldn't possibly stay mad at him - or his dragon.

"Thank you for apologizing," she said softly as kitchen workers, slightly baffled by the interruption, began resuming their work. "And tell your dragon, too."

Then she raised her spoon and stuck the end in his face, perhaps an inch away from his nose. "But don't you ever do that again, you hear? Or I'll have to kill you."
