Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Aniese had grown used to her cot in the lower caverns. The room was small, a fraction of the quarters she'd had back at Big Bay. The bathing pools were communal and there wasn't even a real mirror. In fact, she'd pretty much stopped wearing cosmetics as there wasn't much time to apply them, or a good enough reflection for her to see what she was doing. The labor was hard, and her hands were usually dry and cracking from being submerged in hot water and soapsand all day. But for the first time in her life, Aniese didn't feel like she was wasting her time or that she wasn't really wanted. She actually felt useful. Maybe not as much as she would have liked, but a little bit wanted. Rhyssone had told her that she was now free to go home but Sien had sent her a note informing her that the Hold's inheritance had officially changed. Aniese didn't have to think for very long that if she went home, she'd quickly be tucked away into some sort of domestic corner and groomed for a husband. The difference was, even though she was doing chores around here, it wasn't with the fate of being forced to marry someone she didn't want. Aniese thought she'd certainly stay, as long as the work was good.

And it wasn't like being in the Weyr was all bad, either. She hadn't had the courage to get anywhere near a dragon, even though it had been over half a turn since Telimnon had told her that dragons couldn't hurt humans. They were still pretty terrifying. And although that first threadfall had been violent, and there had been injuries ever since, in general she'd figured out how to be useful in the Infirmary, learning the procedures and even some basic things like wrapping bandages or applying numbweed. There had been a few major injuries, but nothing as bad as that first time.

And she had Cedar and Cove. Since O'zen had let her bring Skiff too, she saw him almost every day. Even though she hadn't met almost any of the other Weyrfolk and only occasionally spoke with other Lower Caverns workers, she was almost content.

There was a measure of loneliness, but it was not so bad. Nowhere near as bad as she would have thought.

Aniese looked once more around her small quarters before heading out into the lower caverns. Dark-colored Cedar and bright-colored Cove perched on her shoulders, peering ahead alertly. The caverns were empty this evening. Thread was scheduled for the following day and early in the morning, so most riders were sleeping or at least having the sense to not get splitting hangovers. Aniese poured herself a mug of klah, topped it off with some drops of sweet nectar and a dollop of cold milk, and headed to one of the hearths. She pulled a chair up and leaned back, near the fire. Now that summer had given way to autumn, it was much cooler in the evenings.

Things were a bit hectic around the Weyr considering that Threadfall was due to hit the next day early in the morning. Everyone had been busy preparing and making sure that they were ready for whatever happened. Though with Threadfall no one knew what could happen and Ebylin dreaded the worst but hoped very much for the best. Harnteth was highly confident that they would do a great job just like last time. Her dragons reassurance was almost enough to make her believe it though she still worried. She just didn't want to see anyone else die...that was one of her biggest concerns.

The thought was a depressing one but unlike before she was still in pretty high spirits despite it. She had her reasons and was grateful she had them to keep her from wallowing in anxiety and sadness. That evening she was a bit anxious but mostly just tired after a long day of preparing for Threadfall. Harnteth waited for her outside, being lazy and laying out in the cool air outside the lower cavern's entrance. She got into the kitchens and went right for the klah, though she probably didn't need to be drinking it at this time of night she wanted it. Only putting a bit of nectar into it she cradled the cup in her hands and made her way to a table.

Her eyes instantly caught sight of the girl next to one of the hearths and she did recognize her...it was hard not to. Considering she had heard people talking about her. It wasn't so much anymore and Ebylin honestly never really saw her much herself. Not really sure if the girl wanted to be disturbed Ebylin settled for sitting at the opposite side and end of the table she was at quietly and leaned against the table to sip her klah. She winced with a hiss and put her cup down to rub her arm with the burn scar. Her scars, especially her arm ached during cool weather. Which was why she tried to stay out of the cold during the winter unless doing drills. Harnteth's sleeping mind barely flinched from the disturbance since she was used to it.

Glancing at the girl after the hiss she decided to at least say something. "What has you up at this hour dear? Can't sleep?" Goodness she sounded like some old woman. Oh well. Sometimes she felt like one when around younger people.

[ooc: its horrid. I know. But I couldn't resist them meeting.]

Aniese looked up as a rider came to sit at the table she was at. The girl spared a closed-lip smile for the woman, who was unfamiliar to her but had the courtesy to be friendly. She did not recognize the knots on her shoulder: they seemed to be more complex than just those of an average rider. The strand of color woven through them was green, though. Aniese knew what that meant. She wondered who the rider's dragon was, and if she'd ever seen her before.

The rider hissed under her breath and Aniese looked over again, mildly surprised. She hand't heard well enough to tell if she had been saying words but it didn't sound like it. She was rubbing her arm and Aniese wondered if she'd spilled hot klah on it. A moment later the greenrider met her eyes and spoke. Aniese tilted her head slightly. She sounded friendly rather than grumpy.

Still, Aniese wasn't sure how much she could tell this woman. If this rider wasn't really interested in knowing, was maybe just asking to be polite, then all Aniese's thoughts would seem trivial. It wasn't as though this was a good time to be musing and thinking over things, anyway. She had to get her head clear for Threadfall tomorrow. Aniese shrugged. "Just had a lot in my head. Wanted to mull things over." She raised an eyebrow in an expression of polite interest. "I haven't met anyone with your knot before. Would you mind telling me your rank?" And name, she added silently, feeling stupid. Well, hopefully the woman was in the mood to talk and wasn't just being polite.
