Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Kari felt a strange sense of claustrophobia coming down on her as the Hatching drew nearer. Apparently Thread did not fall in their territory every day, and so after the disastrous First Fall, T'ech had been doing whatever it was a Weyrleader did in getting the wings ready for the next one. They'd had their egg touching very soon after the Fall, and Kari felt like her head was spinning. There were so many changes, and they were coming so quickly! She still half couldn't believe that she'd been Searched. It seemed too coincidental; Karen just happened to get Searched after sleeping with the Weyrleader, and then she did too? It felt like a political move to get them to be distracted or at least on their side. Kari wasn't sure what to think.

A turn ago she would have hated the idea of being in a Weyr. It was so liberal, so immoral. But being here she'd found that was something of a preconception that wasn't entirely accurate. Although there was an unsavory amount of sex, the people weren't particularly demons; they were actually fair and kind. Kari had been surprised to find that. Still, the Holder part of her was uncomfortable with really being in the Weyr and facing the possibility, however unlikely, of Impression. Being raised to look down on a position made the prospect of accepting that position ridiculously difficult.

Only one thing would really make her feel better right now, so she slid back into the heated soaking pools at the back of the barracks and exhaled silently. Some candidates were comfortable enough to actually come in here naked, but Kari could never go naked unless she was in the female bathing pool. She had changed into her swimwear and now draped her towel over the counter in the corner before stepping into the pool and wading in. It was blessedly warm and steamy, promising to ease away her tension. Gently she settled herself against the waist-high bench and leaned against the edge of the pool; the hot water lapped gently around her shoulders.

At last, a piece of quiet and relaxation.

Tahven walked slowly back to the candidate barracks. He was hungry after a full day of chores, but didn’t feel like grabbing something to eat just yet. His body still ached from the First Fall and he was filthy from working all day. Despite running and staying fit all he could the muscles used for swinging a pick simply weren’t used to that kind of strain. Always did hurt worse the days following. A good long soak would feel nice. At least he didn’t have to deal with any threadscore, it seemed like every rider he passed had some vicious burn all bandaged up. Even with all their practice the rider simply didn’t have the experience needed quite yet. Fighting thread was incredibly dangerous, and there was no substitute for actually doing the job where they could get decent at it.

Grabbing a towel and fresh clothes from his room Tahven made the quick walk to the pools. He’d learned in his long experience as a candidate that it was best to stay fully clothed until you knew who was using any coed pools. Growing up in a weyr one was never ashamed to bathe naked around others, but once you joined with other candidates you’d find those only recently come from holds. Normally those types were more conservative. After an incident where he’d been screamed at and threatened by some minor hold lord’s daughter he’d decided it was worth arriving fully clothed to see who might be there already.

As he entered the room Tahven was relived he had come clothed. He had seen this candidate before and something about the way she held herself told him she was holdfolk. The long hair, the swim wear, everything spoke of a modest holder. Best make nice before making her angry. He’d been bathing naked with girls for as long as he could remember, but he doubted if she had ever fully seen a man. Well, she seemed a nice sort and it might be pleasant to have company, better make sure she was okay with him even coming in with smallclothes on. He’d run into a holdfolk girl when he was fifteen that’d thrown a punch when he simply tried swimming with her.

“Mind if a join you?” He said with a gentle smile. Now Tahven was an admirer of women, and he struggled with it daily. It was difficult when every woman walked by caught his eye and his heart leapt into his throat. They didn’t like to be stared at all the time, and he had learned his lesson, but he still had to remember at times. This candidate wasn’t the most beautiful he’d seen, but she was pretty. Personally he loved the long hair holdfolk kept; it bothered him that it was necessary for most weyrwoman to keep it short. Always preferred a healthy look over starved, and though she sat down he could see this young woman was definitely taller than most girls. Keeping a gentlemanly air he waited to see if she would allow him to join.

Kari tilted her head back and let her eyes drift closed. The warm water was relaxing and she could feel her muscles easing and the tension dissipating. It was so soothing, she could almost drift off....

Footsteps slapped against the stone floor and her head shot up instantly. Someone had to be approaching. She looked up just as Tahven entered the room and quickly flushed. A man? Well, sure, these pools were mutual. But it was so dangerous to be in here, alone, with a man. Just the thought would have caused rumors to abound, back at Keroon...

He seemed to be a bit gentle though in his manner. He paused and asked her if she minded. Kari tried to calm her fluttering nerves down. Maybe he was just tired and stressed out, like she was. She hadn't ever spoken to him before, so how was it that he could be intentionally seeking her out and taking advantage of her? She shook her head once, slowly, and then said, "No, I don't mind at all. Feel free." She attempted to offer a friendly smile, but she didn't know if it was fully expressed. Well, ok, so he seemed to be polite. But that didn't excuse her sudden nerves. Being alone in a bathing pool with a man.... it sounded so scandalous.

Tahven waited patiently for her answer, trying not to notice the flush that came to her face. It would make him feel like an intruder if she was embarrassed over this whole matter. As she answered him his smile brightened. It would be nice to relax in the heated pools. She actually smiled back so it couldn’t be all that bad. Still seemed a little on edge but the water was calling to him and his muscles ached. Hanging his towel on the rack near at hand he turned his back to her as he undressed.

Pulling his filthy tunic over his head revealed a muscled back several scars from his fights apparent on his skin. Tossing the tunic aside he untied his trousers and quickly tossed them aside. For the girl’s sake he kept his small clothes on, that nervous smile meant she was definitely not used to sharing a bath. It felt good to finally be free of his sweat-stained clothes, stretching with a yawn he grabbed some soap sand then turned to walk back to the pool. Tahven had not spent his numerous years as a candidate being idle. No he trained daily and his toned form spoke volumes for the amount of effort he put into running numerous times a day. He smiled as he walked past the girl and made his way to the opposite side of the pool. Best keep his distance in case he frightened her away. He set the soap sand near the edge of the pool before entering.

Stepping into the warm water he closed his eyes and slowly let his body sink into the wonderfully hot water. His height made it difficult for him to submerge all the way where he sat, but he compensated and crouched low. Tahven was used to such problems and soon enough he was comfortably soaking in water up to his chin. Sighing with content he let the aches and pains be carried away. For a moment he forgot that the girl was even in the pool. Opening his eyes he smiled, seeing her sitting directly across from him. “Nothing quite beats a warm bath.” At least he always looked forward to it. If he were to ever impress he hoped his weyr would be near such a device, otherwise he’d have to go between and find one. “I’m Tahven by the way. I think I saw you at the egg touching, but I didn’t get your name. What did you think of that huh? Pretty crazy how big those shells are.” Best try to make simple conversation to make her feel comfortable. He would have preferred some silent alone time, but he had to be polite. Besides, she was rather cute and he couldn’t help himself, not when she was shying away like that.

Kari looked up hesitantly but as Tahven turned his back on her and began undressing she quickly averted her eyes, feeling her face grow warmer. It was one thing to say she would share the bathing pool with a man... but a totally different thing to actually do so. She continued to look away until she heard him entering the pool from the other steps, and then risked a quick glance over. Silly relief flooded her as she briefly glimpsed some clothing. It was not much but at least he wouldn't be naked. Unconsciously she crossed her arms over her swimclothes, risking another glance at Tahven.

"Oh. Yes. The baths are nice... and relaxing. They are a good deal better than the water cavern, especially at this time of night." She risked a small smile and looked down again. "Oh. Er..." She looked back up, half amazed that he'd remember seeing her. She wasn't all that memorable. "Yes... my name is Kari." Another smile, this time slightly more confident. Yes! Eggs. Eggs were good to talk about. Safe. "I didn't realize they'd be so... large," she said, echoing his words. "I mean, they're not as big as us, but they're still..." She raised her hands, forming a vague egg shape as though molding clay. "And that gold egg was huge," she added, eyes going slightly unfocused as she remembered the vivid details of the event. "I'm sure the hatching will be here any day now. But I don't think I'll Impress." She averted her gaze and dropped her hands back into the water.

Tahven felt better already. The water seeped away the pain and grit from the busy day. Breathing deeply he let himself sink up to his nose. Rising slowly he kept his eyes open so that he could look to the girl when she spoke. At the moment he couldn’t tell if his words had helped her become more at ease, or had riled her further. Well he certainly didn’t want her upset. Smiling gently he nodded politely as she spoke. Tahven couldn’t help but notice her stumbling over her words, if anything it was endearing, holdfolk really were quite shy. So her name was Kari. Tahven quickly put it to memory, though he doubted he would forget now. It was a simple name, but all the more lovely for it. “Kari…” he spoke slowly, as if tasting the sound, “yes that is a beautiful name.”

He sat up straighter now, though a chill spread through him as wet skin became exposed to the open air. Thankfully the steam kept him somewhat warmer. Still it wasn’t so polite to slouch when talking to a lady. They really should make some deeper pools for those that stuck out of them when sitting. He laughed lightly at her descriptions of the eggs, “Yeah, I don’t run into many things bigger than me.” Tahven blushed than, hoping she hadn’t taken that the wrong way. The candidate had never been artful with words. “Well,” he tried to recover, “besides whers and dragons that is. Hatchlings grow so fast!”

Nodding with her assessment of the eggs he looked off to the side a little before meeting her eyes. “Can’t see it being longer than a week now. Could happen tonight for all we know.” There had been some very entertaining hatchings at Benden, it would be nice to have a simple one with so many eggs at stake. Tahven gave a start at her doubt and quickly looked towards her, but she was looking off to the side now almost sad. His first instinct was to cross over to her, perhaps comfort her on the manner. Reflexively his body moved, though he stopped himself. Instead of crossing the pool he only leaned forward, able to rest his elbows on his knees while still keeping his head above water.

Tahven felt quite silly but he could imagine her running away in fear should he try to comfort her and be any closer. “Can’t say I have the best advice for Impressing, but if you have any questions I can probably answer them…I’ve been standing for years now.” he swallowed hard, straightening slightly, “I think you’ll do great. Dragon would be silly to not want you.”

Beautiful? Kari flushed deeply at his words. It was one thing to have him sharing the bath with her, but entirely another to have him complementing her... especially when she was undressed! Before she could formulate a response, luckily, he continued. She sent him a slightly quizzical look. Bigger than him? What did he mean? She frowned and then ignored it. "I'd never really seen a dragon, before we came to Vaioa," she confessed. "And even at the Hold, I only saw them way in the distance, you know, because even though the hold is not too far it was long enough that there wasn't much chance to make anything out. But at the Turn's End gather they were all over the place." Her voice was slightly hushed. "Well, I never realized how... big they are? I always thought one of the herdbeasts that pulled the caravan was large, but..." She trailed off, raising her eyebrows at Tahven as though unable to comprehend the pure scope of an adult dragon.

"Y-you what? Oh? You've been to a Hatching before?" Kari didn't know if there was any shame to Standing and not Impressing. She was totally new to the world of Candidacy-- to the world of Weyrs. And there was so much going on that overwhelmed her and she just didn't understand most of it. Tahven suddenly seemed much older and wiser and knowledgeable than her. She edged closer, scooting along the low bench just slightly, and leaning forward. "Wait, so the eggs on the sands now-- that is how big the dragonets will be? And you said they grow up fast? But the eggs are big-- but the dragons are so much bigger..." The scale of the dragons was immense and even so, she hadn't expected the eggs to be so large. "...Much bigger than a baby! SO how do they grow-- I mean, how exactly.. what happens? And do you really think they'll hatch in a sevenday?" She stared at him, wide-eyed. "The shells didn't feel like they were ready to hatch. But I don't know what they're supposed to feel like. They were very hard. I don't know how a dragon could break through them. I mean," She took in a deep breath, unaware that she was basically overwhelming him with questions, "...do you really think I could Impress even though I don't know anything?" Her eyes were very wide.

Tahven wondered what it must be like to grow up without dragons. Living in a hold must be so dull. To live without dragons…for a weyrbrat it seemed an impossible lifestyle. At least to Tahven it did. To go a morning without their bugles, to never hear their voices, watch them soar…it made him cough shortly. Thinking about it only made him all the more desperate to impress. Vaioa would be different, he knew it would be. There were thirty-three eggs on the sands, one of those held his dragon, he was sure of it. Looking back at Kari he smiled gently, entranced by all of her questions.

He had to listen carefully, lest he miss something she said. Tahven didn’t want to offend her by forgetting a question, though they were overwhelming. “A herdbeast is smaller than the tiniest of greens. After all, they have to carry people like us!” He couldn’t stop smiling. To see someone so entranced by just the size of dragons happened to be, well, refreshing. Tahven realized he hadn’t spent too much time with holders. Living in a weyr all your life well, you took things like monstrous dragons for granted. He flinched at her next words however, yeah he had been to plenty of hatchings. Maybe he should keep it secret just how many. She wouldn’t think less of him if she knew how many dragons had rejected him, would she?

“Yeah, lots of candidates end up standing more than once. Though I can’t say I’ve met someone that has stood as much as me…” His voice drifted off, eager to answer the next of her questions and get away from that subject. It did not help to dwell on the subject. This hatching all of that would change. He would impress soon, the eggs would hatch any day now and he would move onto weyrlinghood. “Yep! Hatchings are pretty long, though not very tall, and they do curl up a bit in the egg. Not sure ‘how’ they grow. Just…quickly. Just watch the gold from this clutch! They start at near eight feet, and they’ll reach over forty feet within their first year! Oh and their appetites…voracious creatures weyrlings are.” He smiled as she edged closer, he felt himself pulling closer as well. Especially as he described the creatures, using wide motions from his hands. “Any day now, and they’ll have a special bit on their noses to break through the shell.”

For a moment he wondered if he might be stepping too far, but in another thought it almost felt natural. Tahven stretched out, still answering her questions, and very gently his hand was on her shoulder opposite him. Smiling he turned to look at her, “How could a dragon not want to Impress you?” he blushed, pulling away slightly, unsure if she might think him too forward “Well, only reason you’re not a rider is probably because you haven’t let a hatchling claim you yet. Can’t see anything walking away from someone like you.” Faranth he was making a fool of himself! She was just curious, wanted to know a little bit more, no reason to think that meant she had any interest in him.

((necrooopost haha, 'tis fun))

Kari sighed wistfully. "If you've stood loads of times before, you must have more experience," she said softly. "I don't even know what I'm supposed to do." She shrugged... truth be told, she wasn't even sure she wanted to Impress. Dragons were, well, really big. Kari had always envisioned her lifestyle as being a mother to a large brood of holdborn children, not being a dragonrider. She wasn't a hero, or a fighter.

She nodded at the rest of his words, mesmerized by the picture he was painting. An eight-foot dragon sounded quite big enough, but forty feet was just about unthinkable. The prospect was daunting. And she hadn't even thought about their appetites. How did one keep such a big beast full, anyway? Surely he'd be constantly eating. She realized that she didn't have a lot of knowledge and although Tahven was very helpful, she felt overall very ill-prepared to try and Impress. She didn't even know what she had to do during the hatching.

For the first time in perhaps her whole life, Kari didn't flinch away from contact with a man, though it was more because she was too distracted to notice really that Tahven was touching her. Somehow though, his words seemed to penetrate the misty dragonscape that was filling her mind. SHe turned to look at him with a wry smile. "How could a dragon not want me?" She said with an uncharacteristically dry laugh. "Dragons need a partner who is brave and strong, to help them fight Thread. I'm not brave, I'm not strong, and I certainly can't fight Thread. There's absolutely no reason a dragon would want someone like me." Self-deprecation was rare for Kari, and a side most people hadn't seen, a combination of her sensitive nature and her uncertainties, which she rarely showed others for fear of being thought unseemly.
