Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Tis the season for santa dragons
It hadn't been a good day for the young man. The first half had been okay, nothing too exciting just the normal routine. Unfortunately the afternoon had turned out to be more eventful, and not in a good way. Tallyn had been assigned to the infirmary for chore duty. It was straight forward enough and those without healer training were often assigned fairly easy if boring tasks. Maybe if the task had been more difficult he would have been paying more attention, rather than allowing his mind to wander. Normally he was a diligent and focused worker, but lately he had troubling keeping his mind on the task before him. The result of his inattention had been a shattered pot of numbweed and a good tongue lashing from Journeyman healer in charge. Tallyn had taken the healers scolding without offering anything for his defense. Simply issuing apology or agreement as needed. He had ended the time with giving the infirmary floors a good scrubbing before leaving.

Unfortunately his misfortunes had not ended with a broken pot of numbweed. A sharp edge had caught his tunic, resulting in a large tear. He didn't have many light tunics suitable for Vaioa weather, which seemed shift between hot or hotter. Normally he would have gone to the lower caverns and seen if it could be mended or gotten a new one. On this day it had just been one thing to many. He stomped into the Candidate barracks, with no eggs on the sand the place was practically deserted compared to how it had been. The presence of someone else would have checked his temper, but with everyone apparently at dinner he felt no inhibition and gave his temper free rein. Scowling he tore at the offending garment, pulling it off over his head before he threw it aside. Still unsatisfied by the gesture he kicked out at a nearby chair, sending the piece to the floor with clatter.

"Shard it all!" He cursed, dropping into a chair. His last action had been painful, and the toes of his right foot were throbbing from the contact. He felt suddenly ashamed by his childish reaction and let his head drop into his hands. Maybe he wasn't meant to be a rider. How many times had he been told by his father that rider's didn't loose their tempers. He propped his foot on top of his left knee, rubbing his still smarting toes.

Gale sat in her room spinning at a wheel she had recently procured with the help of the nearby Weaver Hall. It was a much smaller Hall than the one she had come from, of course, but they had enough resources to help her with this request. She found spinning to be very relaxing and she was grateful Vaioa had the resources she needed to do it.

She glanced over at the patch of floor near her bed to make sure Sisco was still occupied with the rock she'd given him to play with. It was an ideal toy since it was far too large for him to swallow and it rolled in a bizarre way that made predicting its trajectory impossible. The young weaver had needed something to keep the little terror from attacking her wheel or playing with her thread, and so far the rock worked perfectly. At the moment he was wrestling with it.

Content, Gale turned back to her spinning. A few moments later a loud shout from down the hall made her jump out of her skin. She stopped her wheel, wincing as a loud crash followed the shout. Concerned, she stood and hurried down the hall. Sisco shrieked and flew after her, attaching himself to her shoulder just as she reached the common room.

The short candidate eyed Tallyn and the tipped chair. She gathered from his expression and the way he was rubbing his toes that he must have kicked the chair over in a fit of anger. She crossed the room and pulled up a chair to sit near him. She reached out her hands for his foot.

"Here, let me see," she said in a tone somewhere between gentle and businesslike. Sisco glared at the boy from her shoulder, his eyes whirling orange and yellow.

Tallyn winced as he massaged his throbbing toes, at least the pain proved to be quite distracting. It was difficult to think of anything beyond the pain and how stupid it had been to kick a chair in the first place. Unfortunately the act had not gone unnoticed. Seeming to appear from thin air a female candidate pulled up a chair and sat done. Tallyn eyed her with a startled expression as she reached towards his foot, asking to see it. He wanted to refuse the requested, but rather than make a fuss he complied. She hadn't needed to come out after all and only seemed to be trying to help. Sheepishly he handed over his foot.

"I ah don't think it's broken just stubbed it good." He explained quickly. He recalled her name, Gale, from their previous encounter. Hopefully this hadn't ruined whatever opinion of him she may have had if any. "Sorry if I startled you. I thought everyone was at dinner." He apologized, dropping his gaze, still embarrassed at having been caught loosing his temper. "So are ah you a healer?" He asked. Those he were familiar with were often eager to help out when an injury was involved. Maybe that had been what prompted this girl's response. Tallyn watched the flitt on her shoulder warily, he didn't look to pleased at the moment and he really didn't want to add bites or scratches to his injury list.

Gale patiently waited for Tallyn to surrender his foot and then bent over it to examine the injured toes.

"I ah don't think it's broken just stubbed it good. Sorry if I startled you. I thought everyone was at dinner."

Gale smiled at him, though it was lost on him as he lowered his gaze. "That's alright," she assured him. "I'm not quite hungry yet, so I thought I'd wait till the crowd died down to head over." She bent back over the toes as she spoke to give them one last look-over and then straightened up and released his foot with a smile. Sisco hugged her neck with his tail and leaned against the side of her head, still glaring. "Looks like you're right," she said. "No real harm done."

"So are ah you a healer?"

Gale shook her head, still smiling. "No, I just had a very dutiful and well-rounded mother growing up. I learned a lot about recognizing minor injuries from her." The buxom candidate sat back in her chair and pulled Sisco down to her lap. She massaged his neck the way he liked and soon he'd lost interest in Tallyn. His little eyes whirled blue-ly off into space.

"So," Gale began when her firelizard was effectively indisposed. "What's eating you? No one kicks a chair for fun."

Tallyn nodded as she spoke, then realized with her examine his foot she wouldn't be able to see the movement. "That makes sense. Though then you run the risk of being left with whatever no one else wanted. Though now with the holders tithing that's not much of an issue." The lack of tithes had been difficult on both man and beast. Now at least those memories were slowly fading. The return of thread had also meant the return of generous tithe trains. The Weyr depended heavily on tithes to survive. The lack of them had been a true test of resolve for everyone.

As Gale agreed with his previous diagnosis he managed a grateful smile, "Thanks." He placed the injured limb carefully on the floor. The cool stone felt good against his sore foot, and he gave his toes a tentative wiggle. They hurt, but not too badly. He looked back up at youngwoman as she spoke about the source of her knowledge. "That's some good knowledge to have." He hadn't known his mother, not very well any way. He'd never even called her mother, but he'd never felt neglected. There were always plenty of Weyrfolk to help care for and look after the offspring of dragonriders.

He was beginning to relax when Gale asked her next question. He felt himself tense before forcing his body to relax back into the chair. He pushed a hand through his hair, forcing the brown strands back into place. "Oh you know just a bad day." He answered casually, shrugging his shoulders. Actually it had been a string of "bad" days all starting with his last appearance on the hatching sands. He stood, carefully, and limped over to where he had tossed his shirt and picked up the article. He returned to the chair, sitting as he turned the piece over in his hands. Finding the rip, he showed it to the young woman. "Started off breaking a pot of numbweed in the infirmary and then tore my tunic."

Gale watched Tallyn carefully as he answered her question. Although he seemed to be trying to hide it, it was obvious he was pretty upset. She narrowed her eyes a little, somewhat unnerved by the fake casual air he pulled around himself. Whatever the problem was, it must be a deep one. People didn't act this way over one bad day; they got frustrated and complained about it instead. Tallyn was dodging the question and trying to hide his feelings. She studied him, wondering what the best way to help him might be.

Her eyes followed him as he limped over to his shirt. She wondered about what might make a young man like this unhappy. Perhaps homesickness? It seemed unlikely; Tallyn had been at the Weyr quite a while. He should be used to it by now. Trouble with another Candidate, or...well, it could be anyone, really.

Tallyn shook her out of her train of thought by sitting back down and holding the tunic out toward her. Gale leaned forward to peer at it, nodding as he explained how it tore. Thought of Tallyn's deeper problems faded to the back of her mind as her Weaver training took over. She took the shirt from him gently and examined it.

"I could mend this for you." Gale held up the shirt briefly and then laid it back in her lap, slipping a hand inside to feel the tear. "Quite easily, actually. Or, I could even make you a new one. But that would take much longer; I don't have much free time." She hear her words after she said them and smiled in amusement at herself, glancing up at him. "Of course, you know how it is."

She looked back down at the tunic, the smile disappearing back into concentration. "But if you need a quick solution, I could stitch it up for you and hide the mend in a stitched design. Something modest, befitting a Candidate." She looked back up at him, her head tilting to the side. "What do you think?"

The youngman allowed himself to release the breath he hadn't even been aware of holding. He was relieve the torn shirt was enough to occupy the girl's attention and keep troublesome questions from being asked of him. He allowed himself to relax, leaning back into the chair as Gale studied the rip, wondering if she'd realized he hadn't been entirely truthful with his answer. He felt a little guilty about side stepping the real issue, but he didn't want to dwell on the past or place his past failures on display. It was time to leave his last failure on the hatching sands behind and start looking toward the next clutch.

Tallyn blink in surprise as Gale offered to repair the garment. He'd thought she might simply wash her hands of him and return to her room after casually blocking her inquiry. "A healer and a weaver eh. I guess my luck is changing. He answered with a teasing smile. "I'd really appreciate if you could mend, it. I was going to see if I could find someone in the lower caverns to mend it, but if you can do it that would be great. Thanks. He said gratefully. "When ever you have a chance will be fine.

Tallyn nodded thoughtfully as she explained her idea on how to mend the tear. "Sounds good to me. I'm afraid i would not one stitch from another. He admitted. After a moments hesitation he plunged into his next admission. "I'm afraid I don't have much in the way of marks, but if you let me know how much it will cost I'll make sure you get what's owed you." He said quickly. He wasn't exactly sure how he would earn the payment. Perhaps someone in the lower caverns would pay him for doing some odd jobs for them.

Gale's mouth fell into a little 'o' shape and she raised her hands as Tallyn brought up the subject of marks, shaking her head.

"Oh no, no, no," she said, waving her hands a little. "You don't need to pay me. This won't take me long to mend at all. I can do it right now if you want. Honestly, its no trouble at all. Don't even worry about it." She put her hands down and looked at the tear again. "I think i will, actually," she said. "Mend it now, I mean. I can sew while we talk."

She looked down at her firelizard and tapped him. "Sisco, fetch my needle and thread. please." The brown yawn at her. She frowned slightly and pushed an image of the item she wanted at his mind, along with the suggestion that it could be found in her room, then patted him on the rump. "Go now."

Sisco chirped and flew off the way they'd come only moments ago. Gale smiled a little in satisfaction and then turned back to Tallyn. He still seemed tense. She suddenly remembered what she'd been musing about before Tallyn distracted her with his shirt. She studied him a little, once more wondering how to handle the situation. Since she didn't know him well, she decided to ignore it for now and just talk with him to keep his mind off of...whatever it was.

"So, where are you from, Tallyn?" She smiled wryly at herself for asking the most stereotypical question in the Weyr. Everyone was always asking it and always answering. It was the fastest way to get a handle on someone, but she felt silly knowing how tired she was of that same question after only being in the Weyr a few weeks.

The young man studies Gale's face, "As long as you're sure about that. Though if you ever need some help with something just let me know. He continues, pushing a hand through his hair. "I don't have any crafting skills, but I do know my way around Weyr fairly well."

Tallyn watched, impressed with the amount of control she had over the flitt. Most he saw on a daily basis just sort of ran wild doing whatever they pleased, which most often involved getting into some sort of trouble. Gale seemed to have spent some time training the Brown to retrieve items for her.

"High Reaches. He answered, flashing a smile. "Born and raised there and stood for two hatching before transferring here to stand for Lisenyth's last clutch. He continued. He left out that obvious fact that he hadn't been successful at any of the hatching. It was a difficult thing to explain to someone and no one really understood it unless they had experienced it for themselves. "How about you?" He asked, watching the weaver.

Gale smiled fondly with memories from home. "Southern Boll," she answered. "I grew up in the Weaver Hall there. My parents are both very accomplished Weavers and most of us kids took after them. They were so pleased when I was Searched though. They talked me into coming, really. I hadn't ever been to a Weyr before I came here."

She turned back toward the hall to the girls' quarters as she heard Sisco returning. He glided over to her and dropped what she had asked for onto her lap before landing on her shoulder, his tail curling firmly around her neck.

"Gooooooood booooooyyyyy!," she squealed, rewarding him with scratches in all his favorite places. He crooned happily back to her. "Good job, Sisco! Good boy!" She gazed lovingly at the lizard for a moment and then looked down at her sewing as she began the repair process.

Once she had things started she looked back up at Tallyn. "So, High Reaches? Was it hard adjusting to the desert? I don't mind it too much because Boll can get pretty hot too. Its mostly just drier here. But High Reaches is so cold! You must hate it. Do you miss snow? I've always wanted to see snow. It sounds beautiful."

She smiled cheerfully and began stitching, glancing up at him frequently to show she was still interested.
