Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

WTF AM I DOING
Balusc had not been here long enough to make friends. He did not know yet where to begin. An idea came to him as he rose for the day. A few ideas, actually. Accomplishments to be had, a groundskeeper he needed to speak to. He'd dive right into this whole mess. Yea, that was it, get his fingers in deep from the start, he had the energy for it!

He noticed how glorious the pillow behind his head felt. So very, very soft.
Suddenly, all these thoughts? Became vague, unfocused. Sort-of thoughts. Maybes.

There would certainly be time for all that, he thought with a grin.

His manner of rising from bed wasn't particularly hasty. The buff looking fellow went about it slow, having a very satisfying rest left a lingering feeling of pleasant laziness. He stretched his back down to his toes. He rolled his shoulders, cracked his neck.
Balusc reached for the chest at his bedside with all the belongings that came with him, not even bothering to get out of bed as he did so. He was up on his behind, at least. That was something.

Mind, he probably SHOULD get out of bed. The thought did occur to him briefly as his stomach rumbled. Get a decent breakfast, report for some daily orders. He shouldn't be skipping anything just yet, he couldn't afford to do that. Not with being such a fresh face.

Opening the chest, he reasoned he was getting himself breakfast, after all.
What appeared to be a water skin of some kind had been among his things, and when he popped it open, it had a smell. It wasn't water, and it smelled nothing of tea or fruit. Certainly not a mild scent--powerful.
With a small chuckle to himself, Balusc toasted to no one in particular upon opening it, and slugged it down. He gulped and smacked his lips in satisfaction.
It was still a toast, however. To himself, to his good fortune.
The man's body sank back into the bed, a ridiculous smile on his face, his brow line raised. He placed one arm behind his head to offer his skull a little support, his mostly empty container at his chest with the other hand.
He belched, loudly and wetly, idly crossing his legs.

He did not rise for exercise, he did not rise to eat, or dedicate himself to chores. He was choosing to stay in bed, and relax, content to day dream and drink a little alcohol as he did so. Balusc had woken up only to remain lying down.

"Today," his deep voice purred, "Today, I celebrate."

Scratching at an eyebrow idly, he nods to himself. He'd been Searched and whisked away from a mundane life of herding. This was a major improvement, and it called for a day of do-nothing. His pride demanded it.

The morning was warm, summer was clearly on its way. Garel woke in a sweat and found himself in a bit of a foul mood. What a way to start the day. Grumbling quietly to himself, he peeled himself out of his cot and gathered up his work clothes for the day. Kailey chirped sleepily from her pillow on the cot, blinking her eyes slowly.

Garel smiled despite himself, "Lets just take a quick bath before breakfast, love." He disliked starting a day of work already sweaty... not to mention the normally fastidious care he took with his appearance.

The colorful little green chirped again and stretched slowly, fluttering to his shoulder as he made his way down to the common bathing caverns. The firelizard splashed and caroled loudly much to Garel's chagrin, and he grimaced at her, shushing her several times. Kailey paid him no heed, and continued singing happily as he dried his hair and returned to his room to drop off his dirty clothes. A few moments were spent tidying up his room, preferring to spare the Candidates in charge of cleaning the barracks any extra work if he could. He didn't like to make trouble.

"Hmm, we're still a little early, maybe a nice spot in the sun for a few minutes would do you good?" with the shadow of a smile, he cocked his head at the firelizard where she perched on his shoulder, grooming her tiny hands carefully. She paused, seemed to consider the option deeply, then bobbed her head once with a tweet. Chuckling, he left his room and went to head outside once more.

But as he passed the last room in the hallway before the commons area, he heard movement inside. During his time in the Weyr, room 12 had been empty... someone new? Oh dear...

Furrowing his eyebrows, he stood outside the door for a moment, debating with himself whether or not to knock and greet the newcomer, or to just continue on and not make any ripples. A gentle peck on his cheek came from a disgruntled Kailey, the little creature reminding him sternly of his vow to try and be more social... and he knocked softly, then stood back and straightened his shirt and ran a hand through his hair.

"Bah, knocking!" Balusc exclaimed, letting out a chuckle. Shaking his head a little, he again pulled himself upright from the cot. Who could be so gently tapping like that?

"Come in! There is nothing stopping you." Balusc's voice had a distinct resonance to it that one could, without the slightest amount of difficulty, likely find him among the clamor of a crowded dining hall. Even when being open and friendly like this, he came off as commanding.
He twisted around to his bedside, placing his feet firmly on the floor. Back hunched forward comfortably, he slapped his hands onto his knees, he sat and looked to the doorway with some impatience.

These were not fresh clothes Balusc was in. It looked like the same clothes he'd been wearing the day before, and the day before that. Same shirt, same pair of britches. He was at least barefoot, and had enough sense not to sleep in his sandals. Thousands of little wrinkles pulled and bunched the fabric of his clothes in various places, and he didn't seem to pay them any mind. His hair is mashed against one side of his face from his dead rest, and more annoyed to have it jabbing into his eyes than out of vanity, he growls and tosses all of it behind his shoulders.

He took another swig of booze as he paused there, waiting. Clearing his throat, he called out again. He addressed his visitor with flourish, sweeping an arm out and back to himself, waving this person forward.

"Fff-agh! Shaffit get in here! I don't bite." he huffs, craning his neck out of overwhelming curiosity, trying to get a better look without leaving his seat. The way he sounds doesn't seem entirely convincing.

Garel was taken aback by the growling, loud, flustered sounding voice from the other side of the door and stood for a moment, blinking and scratching his angular chin. Kailey chirped curiously and nuzzled his cheek reassuringly, causing him to clear his throat and reach for the door handle. Perhaps he had paused too long, because...

"Fff-agh! Shaffit get in here! I don't bite."

Startled, the tall, thin man opened the door and swallowed, his soulful, sad eyes gazing upon the occupant of the room with a mix of curiosity and horror. He couldn't keep his nose from wrinkling at the scent of the man, though he did manage to keep his eyes from roving quite so obviously over the wrinkled clothing he wore.

Clearing his throat again, he dipped his head a little in greeting, "Ah... hello there. You're new? I live next door, room 11... I'm Garel."

He seemed to hover in the doorway as though there were some invisible force preventing him from entering... and he gazed around in an attempt not to stare at the man's rumpled appearance.

And then, in the untimely way he had... he blurted, "Did you need help finding the Water Caverns? You can wash your clothing there and their bathing pools are some of the best I've ever seen..." Oh Faranth, that sounded rude. He blushed a little and stared at his boot toes.

WTF AM I DOING
There are several kinds of people that would be insulted by what the young man at the door was implying, and perfectly normal responses come to mind. 'Excuse me?' or 'You trying to say something?' but not Balusc.

Pleased to find company had sought him out, he straightens up his posture at the edge of his bed. Balusc gives his visitor a studying look with narrowed eyes, rubbing his prickly jawline with the palm of his hand. The very informative comment didn't sail over his head as the other man may have hoped. It instead made him aware his disheveled, uncombed appearance bothered this potential acquaintance, and he took the comment in stride.
So self-assured was he that he believed he was comely even in the most worn ragged of outfits, Balusc found himself amused by his visitor's antics instead of offended. It was morning after all, and one never awakened in pristine condition. Balusc was a man that when dedicated to his leisure time, it took him several hours of 'wake-up time' as opposed to a few minutes. To expect perfection at one's waking moments was just silly. His thoughts were tickled and in favor of mischief.

Liking himself just fine as he was just for the sake of being difficult, Balusc shrugged. He raised his thick arms over his head and stretched his back, the most casual of grins stretching across his face.

"Hm? Yeh. I kinda know where it's at." He blatantly eyes a chair nearby him for Garel to sit at, kicking the clothes off of it with a foot. "Come and have a seat with Balusc, eh? Is nice to meet you."

Garel scowled and his eyes flicked up to meet the gaze of the other young man. He fidgeted uncomfortably, unable to stop wrinkling his nose in disapproval, blatantly ignoring Kailey's reminders to be nice.

"Er, uh... well. Breakfast is being served soon, and with all the chores we get assigned, I don't like to miss a meal. Especially in this heat," a heat that, on top of all of its discomforts, made the herdbeast-pen-scent of the man just that much more uncomfortable to stand near.

"So I suggest you also ah... get yourself cleaned up and to the Lower Caverns for breakfast or you'll regret it..." he paused, glancing at the man's somnolent posture. "That is... if you were even planning on attending to your chore assignments today? Merilla won't like that..."

His voice rang with impending doom and he folded his arms across his chest, shifting from foot to foot.

His answer was immediate, he didn't even have to think about it. "Pff, I only barely got here." Balusc snorted, rolling his eyes. "If she don't like it, she can shove it. No harm in relaxing now, there is still much day to be had! I will do the work of three men, if not more, and when I choose to rise to do so."
Garel's warning was utterly lost on Balusc. Very few people intimidated him, indeed he'd more likely be intimidated by a dragon, if only out of respect for the creatures.

He shrugs, reaching into his bedside chest and producing another bottle. He could tell Garel was still not coming in for a chat, so maybe he could be tempted with a drink. A drink could not be refused.

"There is no rush. Do not be so hasty! Come, come in and have a drink with me, yes?" he insists, his welcoming voice starting to sound a touch threatening. He waved the dark bottle in Garel's direction with an outstretched arm. His expression even seemed more serious. His brow line flattened. "You should bring yourself in here and have a seat with that most gorgeous firelizard of yours. You are lucky to have her." He acknowledges the firelizard with an approving nod. "If you are my neighbor, let us drink and talk, let me hear about you, hm?"

He chuckles a little, pondering on something the fidgety Candidate in the doorway said a little late. "You know, my cleaning up now is a waste. Balusc knows what his chores are. I have been assigned to tend to much physical labor, herdbeast pens too. It is maybe more useful at the end of the day." Balusc smirks, "I consider it then."

Garel frowned, fidgeted, scowled, scratched his head, straightened his shirt, and looked everywhere but at the man. He felt his temper bubbling just under the surface and he coughed, trying to divert his mind from all the snippy, snarky things he wanted to say in response to the man's clear lack of respect for authority.

Finally, his mouth started talking and he couldn't quite filter it, "Look, it's great you're here and some dragon found you promising, but the Weyr is about rules and everyone's gotta follow them." He gesticulated with jerky, quick arm movements, occasionally nervously dragging his fingers through his hair. "You're new and you seem nice, but do you think this is a joke?" He pointed in the general direction of the Hatching Sands. "If you Impress a dragon, you'll have to fight Thread, and people die up there and..." he sighed, seeming to lose all his steam.

Kailey, on the other hand, responded with a happy chirrup at the clear compliment to her obvious beauty and fluttered from Garel's shoulder into the room, zipping from corner to corner in order to sniff every little thing. She circled around Balusc, projecting impressions into Garel's head about a stinky, friendly mountain.

Garel rolled his eyes and slapped his forehead with his palm, "I'm going to breakfast. I'm sorry, I don't drink. Maybe we can talk tonight after chores and you're a bit... more... um..." Less foul smelling? Less abrasive to my senses? "...approachable."

So it was that Garel continued to ignore Balusc's offering of booze. This was a wise decision for a Candidate, but not for a Candidate faced with Balusc.
Garel could not possibly ignore such an invitation, no one ever did. Not when Balusc was in a giving mood. Clearly this man was not yet familiar with this side of the former herder, and he would receive this lesson upon their first meeting.

Balusc listened, he may have nodded to communicate he was listening. His expression became an impenetrable mask of unruffled calm as he rose to his feet.

Finishing his own bottle and tossing it aside to wherever it happened to land, Balusc approached Garel at a slow, sure swagger. Tower of menacing muscle that he was, Balusc still had a few inches in height on the already tall figure directly in front of him. His visitor would not be having any breathing room today. He narrowed his eyes on Garel, a smug grin spreading across his face.

"Rules are for people who cannot a bare a person as they are. Cowards place guidelines, a real leader delivers them personally." He states, his voice a deep, rumbling growl, "You think Balusc will make a party of his candidacy? I will enjoy it, yes. This is a much improved position for me, and I know the risks. I look forward to the day where my dragon and I fly to fight the Thread, we will be glorious, the sky will be a sea of flame, and you will know that it was us."

Grabbing for one of Garel's hands, he moves to slap the bottle of booze there that he long ago decided was his. His neighbor had no choice, he had to take it.

"That will be the day where the most will be done to prevent death." he clears his throat, "I am being perfectly approachable now, but go and eat if you must."

Garel folded his arms across his chest as he listened to Balusc's brazen speech, but he didn't give way when the man approached him. He had a frenzied moment of panic, fearing for just a second that perhaps the man meant him harm... he was a wall of meat, this guy... But no, he kept talking and stopped mere inches from him, much to his nostril's dismay.

"A fair and romantic idea of dragonriding I'm sure. But rules are for dragonriders too, and those rules are given by our superiors. I intend on following them, you go ahead and chase your pretty ideas of glory and flame."

He scoffed down at the man's big, meaty... probably filthy hand as it grabbed his and shoved a bottle into it. He wrinkled his nose at it and held it with two fingers as one might hold a dead bug one just pulled from under one's boot.

"I don't drink," he said flatly, and dropped the bottle, caring very little if it broke.

"I will take my leave now, good day," he spun on his heel and huffed off down the hallway toward the Lower Caverns, inhaling rapidly through his nose to try and rid the smell of herdbeast from his senses.
