Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Oh Faranth, Oh Faranth, Oh Faranth... That was the mantra Lyeot kept repeating in his head as he juggled with the large case of newly made kitchenware for the workers here. Why Pertor would send him to the weyr, thought, was what boggled the miner's mind at the moment.

No scary Lyesk, I protect, yes yes! It was fortunate that Lyeot was allowed to bring his wher to the trip, otherwise he might've totally lost it and left the pots and pans near where the riders slept and bolted back home. The thought of being surrounded by the large beasts these folk called dragons made him tremble and stare with wide, terrified eyes.

Which he was more than ready to leave this place as soon as he got these to someone. Anyone, honestly at this point. Lyesk see, there! Someone take them, yes yes? Perfect timing.

Lyeot wasn't able to get a good look at the person, but he wasn't in the mood either to stay and chat, honestly. Just give them the things and leave. That was all! Simple as that.

"Uhhh..." he said to the person shuffling about the storage. The long hair suggested a female, but he couldn't tell how old or what she did here. "Excuse me? Young miss? I have something to drop off here but I'm not sure who's in charge. If you could be so kind as to give it to them I'd appreciate it."

Look look! Lyesk has hat now, like last yes yes! The brown had managed to snuff out another pot from the pantry it seemed, and had it on his head like he did last time. Look nice, Lyesk keep yes yes!

"No, Lyesk" Lyeot muttered, "We have to go now. Please." Lyesk looked up with sorrowful eyes and darted over to the girl. Lyesk look nice! I can has, please? Watch over, yes yes? It was clear he was not going without the pot.

A smile was on Galide's face as she entered the lower caverns. As of today she was seventeen turns old. This fact was the first thing she thought of when she woke up in the morning, the first thing that caused her to grin in the morning. She had made it through another year without incident. True, she had also made it through another year without getting a dragon, but at least she didn't get hurt or in to any big trouble.

Not only was she a year older but so far her day had been great. Her clothes where freshly washed, making them nice and soft to the touch. Breakfast had been pretty much the same thing as it always was, but today it had seemed much more filling. Already she had squeezed in the time to go for a quick walk around the weyrbowl, enjoying the fresh air. Normally she wouldn't have the time to squeeze that in but today she had been exempt from chores. So far everything was going great.

Truth be told she had no real reason for being in the Lower Caverns besides having journeyed there while wandering around enjoying doing nothing. She had just entered the storage area when a voice cut in to her mindless pleasure. Galide turned around and fixed her brown eyes on the boy who requested that she give a load of pots and pans to whoever was in charge. A small frown creased her face as she began to say, "I would, but I'm afraid that I am not currently aware of who is in cha-"

It was when the man addressed someone called Lyesk that she stopped mind sentence. She flicked her gaze over to his side to be greeted with a hulking brown wher. Her eyes widened in the beginnings of horror when he spoke to her, asking if he could keep the pot that was on his head. A venomous look crossed her face as she turned back to the man and spat, "you brought a wher here!?"

It was no secret that Galide despised whers, although those that did not know her would not know why. Aside from thinking that they where unintelligent and only good for manual labor a wild wher had killed her sister, giving her reason to hate them personally.

A sigh of resignation came from the large man. Seemed his stay here was going to take a bit longer than he wanted it to be. "Alright, thank you anyway. Lyesk come on!" Leave the poor girl alone!"

But.. The wher looked to the girl, eyes saddened. Lyesk want stay, yes yes! Then he noticed the look she was giving him, and for once he had nothing to say. He took a few cautious steps back, trying to pinpoint what it was that made her look at him like that. A very un-wherlike squeak came from Lyesk before he scurried behind Lyeot, leaving the pail at Galide's feet. Scary, no like, no no!

"Lyesk, what on Pern?" The brown shuffled further into the man's tunic when Galide bespoke him, avoiding eye contact as much as he could.

Lyoet, on the other hand, wasn't really sure what to make of the girl and her scathing remark. Sure, whers weren't the most pleasant of creatures to look at, nor the most intelligent. But if with the right person, they were actually great allies. But the way Galide looked at Lyesk spoke otherwise. This was something entirely different.

Trying not to make himself frustrated or sound indignant to her, the miner replied, "Yes, I did bring a wher here. He's my friend, and I trust him enough to bring him here. And honestly, if I didn't, I probably wouldn't be able to be here right now."

Kneeling down, he pet the wher's head in comfort. "He's not that bad, really! Once you get to know him, he's a loveable old dimglow." Lyesk no scary! Me not think, no no. Slowly he approached the Candidate again, head lowered further to the ground to look less menacing. Maybe she was scared? He didn't mean to be!

Chuckling, Lyeot said, "Sorry to disrupt you. Any chance there might be someone here who would know?" All the better for him to get out of here quickly. This whole place was putting him on edge...

There was no sympathy on Galide's face when the wher made it clear that she had scared it. All she did was let out a snort of annoyance and give it a glare. So, this creature thought she was scary when all she had done was give it a look? Clearly this one was much more cowardly than most bloodthirsty creatures that she figure whers where. Instead of finding it calming she thought it was rather pathetic. She believed that these creatures didn't have emotions, why did it bother pretending that it was hurt?

For a moment she was torn on what to do. She was tempted to just walk away, but that would leave this filthy creature in the weyr. Besides, it might slip out of its cowardice when she left and decide to attack someone. If that happened someone might very well loose their life, and it would be all her fault. No, the best choice would probably be to make sure that this man and his beast left as soon as possible.

That was when the man spoke, saying that he brought the wher here because it was his 'friend' and he trusted it. A harsh laugh left her thought, Galide figured that this man must be delusional. Whers where never friends, they where mindless killing machines. They where kept around to do manual labor because the humans where to lazy to do it themselves, nothing more.

At the mans words that whers 'weren't that bad' and his creature was actually loveable she had to refrain from rolling her eyes. Yes, definitely delusional. She was broken out of her thoughts by the sound of the wher stringing together some words and seeming to attempt to say that it was not scary. A scowl crossed her face, fallowed by her flinching and jumping back. Disgust spread across her face as she snapped, "keep that thing away from me! And no, I don't know whos in charge here. I'm a candidate, I'm busy and my chores normally don't include working in the kitchens."

Okay then. Clearly the girl was firm in staying away from Lyesk, and Lyoet did not want to make her any more angry than need be. "Okay, okay. We'll leave you be. Come on Lyesk." The brown gave one last look to the girl before trotting back to his trainer. "And give that back." He snatched the pot back and placed it on a nearby shelf. "Good luck with your chores, m'dear."

Why no like me? Me scary, no no? "Of course not, Lyesk. Some just... don't know how to appreciate you." Uhpprreeech - "Don't know that you're nice." That had the hulking wher nod vigorously. Yes yes! Lyesk no scary, no no!

A call of a nearby dragon made Lyeot flinch. "Let's get this over with." He scurried off deeper into the Lower Caverns, still unsure of where he was going.

The miner had run into Candidates, Weyrfolk, Cooks, Weyrlings, the whole lot. But not one proved to be the Head Cook he was looking for. And Lyesk's presence didn't seem to help matters much as each person reacted differently to him. A wher was clearly not all that common here.

"Alright, thank you." The terrified apprentice nodded before darting back to her chores and leaving Lyeot on his own again. This Arley was a man that didn't appear to want to be found today. Lyesk no help, people scared! Must go, yes yes. "We can't till we find Arley, Lyesk."

Lyeot headed out again, only to find he had been this way before. And that way. And that way too. Oh shards, he was lost. Officially lost. Lyesk find way back! Lyeot sighed. What a day this turned out to be.
