Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The cold of between was replaced abruptly by the dry heat of Vaioa's late afternoon, making Rin gasp and loosen the top of her flight jacket almost immediately. Shards, when they said the desert was hot, they weren't lying. Not only did the few-hour time difference throw her off, but somehow she hadn't quite expected the oppressive weight that the desert sun inflicted. Still, it felt so very different from home, all the better for her peace of mind.

It even looked completely different from home, she noted. The rocks themselves were rusty red, the sand a bright expanse of orangey-redness as far as the eye could see, broken occasionally by darker or lighter boulders and scrub brush. Syzreth's vivid red wings cupped the air and she began to circle in slowly toward the ground, calling out a greeting to the watchdragon.

Syzreth and Rin, transfers from Telgar. Good afternoon!

The garnet bugeled happily at any dragons watching her arrival, enjoying the attention as Vaioa's first fighting garnet pair glided in for a landing near the Lower Caverns entrance.

You just love the attention, you shameless thing, Rin smiled and scratched Syzreth's neckridges.

And you will too, the garnet's voice was smug and amused.

Rin unclipped her riding straps and slid down her dragon's side to land lightly on the ground, gratefully stripping off her riding jacket and helmet and wiping sweat from her face. She paused a moment, gazing around at her new home, one hand resting on Syzreth's nose. Very different. This was a good move. She silently thanked Telgar's Weyrleader for the transfer.

She knew that she should probably report to the Weyrleader as soon as possible, but she figured the man would be busy at this time of day, as all Weyrleaders seemed to be, and wouldn't mind her taking the time to poke her head into the Lower Caverns for a drink and to see about introducing herself to anyone present. Jacket and helmet slung casually over one shoulder, she tossed her hair and strode into the dining area, looking around and taking stock of whoever happened to be there.

V'nan had managed to ease himself into the daily life of a Vaioan dragonrider, albeit with the harsh storm that struck the day of Threadfall. He never anticipated the winds being so destructive in the land of the desert, but he accepted it with stride. Hopefully nest time there wouldn't be as much of an issue, and thus not as many casualties that they had experienced that day.

There will always be trouble with Thread, V'nan. It can't be helped. All we can do is fight it. That is what we are here for. The copperrider sighed. I suppose you are right.

Of course, that would explain the heavy bout of drinking he had been doing the past couple of days. Shards, but even he had been terrified of what could have happened should he and Caith have made a mistake with anything. Currently his appetite had been on was a fancy fruit liquor from Igen. Wasn't as great as Benden, but it was enough to keep him happily sated.

The bugle of a dragon picked up in V'nan's ears. A transfer? Yes. A garnet one at that. His eyebrows raised. Didn't a garnet flight just happen not even a sevenday ago? What was another doing here?

No matter. Whatever the Weyrleader was planning was his own business, not his. But this...

Well, well, well. Seems like the Weyrleader picked good, if the woman's looks were any indication. A fighting pair, huh? That's new. Finally understanding, the man smiled.

Sending a friendly wave, he said, "Good afternoon, my dear! Welcome to Vaioa. Might not be the most friendly of places in terms of the heat, but you'll get used to it. Just be careful of sunburn cause that's never fun to deal with."

Caith in turn welcomed the garnet. Hello there. Syzreth, was it? It is nice to meet you. I hope mine doesn't scare yours off. He's always been like that. I am Caith.

V'nan rolled his eyes. "Who said anything about scaring her off?" He lent a hand. "V'nan, rider of beryllium Caith. Fancy a drink? Benden wine? Klah? Whatever this stuff is that I have now?"

The instant temperature difference inside the Lower Caverns made her sigh with relief. At least there was some escape from it! As she scanned the small crowd of people enjoying after-lunch drinks or leisure in the shade, she noticed a tall, older man walking up to her. Not offensively older, she was pleased to note, and just at that age that men tended to look so... spectacularly rugged. She arched an eyebrow as he strode right up to her and made his jaunty greeting, a smile tugging at one corner of her mouth.

"Rin, of garnet Syzreth. The sun is a welcome change, let me assure you!" she smiled at him cheerfully.

Well hello, Caith, a pleasure to meet you! Syzreth folded her wings neatly to her back and preened them daintily. What an unusual shade for a copper, very distinctive. She rumbled happily in Caith's direction.

"A drink would be just perfect right now, V'nan. Thank you." She sniffed delicately at 'whatever the stuff is that he had right now' and smiled. "Some of... that. Sure."

Rin draped her jacket and helmet over the back of a chair near one side of the entrance and sat down, facing in such a way that she could still clearly see the occupants of the dining area. She cocked her head and grinned when he turned his back on her to fetch a drink. Oh how she loved male riders, they always had such nice... ah... thighs from riding.

You're terrible.

Oh you, hush. Don't think I don't hear you out there, flirting with the first male to talk to you! Let us enjoy our games, shall we?

Like always D'nes was one of those guys that always kept his ear to the wall and found out things that were not 'fully' common to the rest of the Weyr. He had friends everywhere, from the different wings to the kitchen workers. The news of a transfer met his ears only the day before and he was shocked to have missed hearing the news even earlier. After all being Wingthird he would have thought O'zen would have filled him in on the news. That was unless the guy didn't have a clue either. D'nes shivered, he knew better then to ask O'zen, D'nes was so used to the man being the Weyrleader and then T'ech came along. Sure the guy was nice and all, but even D'nes was worried about the guy being Weyrleader while Thread was still new. Luckily the months passed and T'ech was holding himself up well. D'nes was also learning that he was a pretty good Wingthird.

His wingmates liked and listened to him, and Galanth was starting to show that he really did care about his wingmates, helping them when he can. The thought of his Brown being friendly and helpful really placed a smile on his face. One that would not go to waste today. He found himself today hanging around the dinning area, enjoying and drink and relaxing, when Galanth informed him of what was going on out side. That transfer you have been waiting for is here, a Garnet Wait, a garnet? But didn't D'nes information come with something about the new rider might be in his wings. What would, oh, oh now he knew what was going on. Well at least the guy had an idea, the pair must be a fighting pair, or D'nes info was all wrong and the only thing he got right was that there was a new rider in the Weyr.

She has entered the lower caverns, easy to spot. The Brown never looked away from the pair, watching each one carefully from the heights. D'nes watched as a women walked in, someone he had never seen before, and was greeted by V'nan. Guess he would just have to catch her later. Yea I already see her, V'nan got to her first. D'nes was ready to leave things alone, but Galanth had another plan. We will not allow a copper to greet them when we can do better. Move yourself now and greet the rider with charm. Great, D'nes knew better then to argue with his brown, if the dragon wanted something to be done then it would. D'nes left his seat and walked over to the two riders.

"Hope you do not mined me dropping by, but I pretty much know everyone here. Yet i have not had the chance to get to know you. We must fix this. D'nes rider of Brown Galanth and Wingthird of Shale Wing." With a smile and a pat on V'nan's should he also greeted the man. "You mind friend?" D'nes was nothing but smiles, and with a nod at V'nan he hoped the guy did not mind too much. Most people blamed it on his youth, but D'nes loved testing his limits. Galanth on the other had did not use any charm, instead this dragon was all about power and pride. He landed near the copper and garnet and moved head held high before them. He completely ignored Caith and gave all his attention to Syzreth. Welcome Syzreth to Vaioa, I am Galanth.

OOC: Hope you guys don't mind me joining, otherwise I can get this post deleted.

She had some spunk, V'nan would give her that. He liked women with spunk. More fire to them. "Well, Rin. Glad to hear the sun is the least of your worries." Oh, yes. V'nan liked her already.

He nodded to her suggestion. "Whatever the lady wants, she shall receive." The copperrider turned himself to the wineskin and poured himself another drink along with her own glass. Belatedly, he noticed out of the corner of his eye that she was staring at his... gluteus maximus, and he couldn't help the widening grin on his face. "I do hope you enjoy yourself here, my dear. There's much to be seen around here, and the people are quite friendly once you get to know them."

Way to be subtle about it, Caith said. Thankfully Syzerth did not fly off in a huff so all was good. Same here. So you flame, yes? It is not often a garnet fights with us, but it is welcome all the same. You will be a great addition to the wings here.

And you say I'm the subtle one, V'nan jokingly countered. Handing Rin the glass, he sipped at his own, continuing to gaze at her with a knowing smirk. "So Rin from Telgar. To what does Vaioa owe the pleasure of your presence here? Has Telgar been overrun with Trundlebugs? The food not so delectable? Or maybe the desert sands just tickled your fancy?"

The sound of D'nes' voice had the copperrider turn to the younger man for a moment, returning the pat on the wingthird's shoulder. "Not at all, D'nes. There is plenty of drink to go around, so please join us."

Caith had turned quiet when Galanth arrived, eyeing the brown suspiciously. Well, that was certainly rude not to even say hello. Whatever the reason, the copper knew better than to leave things on a sour note. Hello Galanth. I hope you are doing well. Syzerth is supposed to joining your wing, yes?

Rin accepted the drink with a bright smile, sniffing at it before taking a delicate sip. "Mmmm, delicious, thank you." This copperrider had a good smile, and she was enjoying herself thoroughly and they hadn't been there but ten minutes already.

"Hmm yes, if your attitude is anything to go by, I think I might just like it here at Vaioa, all things considered," she paused and frowned at him, touching his hand with her fingertips briefly, "My deepest sympathies on the recent losses. I hear the last Fall was... wretched in that regard."

Taking another few sips of the drink, she rolled the fruity liquor around on her tongue for a moment before answering V'nan's next question, "Ah well, that is a rather long story. But the short version is I lost my... someone rather close to me in the first Fall that Telgar flew, and it was hard to live there anymore with the memories." Her face grew dark and she gazed off to one side for a few moments before shaking herself and continuing on briskly, "So, I requested a transfer to the first Weyr who needed a fighting garnet, and here I am."

Outside, Syzreth settled down on the ground, scooting her stomach into the hot sand with a pleased rumble, Yes, I do. From the way I hear it, you don't currently have any to fly with, hence why I'm here. Though I hear you have a young one growing up at the moment, perhaps there might be a second fighter in the making there.

Rin looked up as another rider approached, smiled, and swallowed her mouthful of drink, "Pleased to meet you, D'nes! I'm Rin, of garnet Syzreth and, as it so happens, the newest addition to your wing. Please, join us. I don't mind at all." Goodness but there were some charming men around here, and all of them sun-bronzed in some way!

Hello, Galanth. Thank you both for your kind welcomes, I think we're going to like it here. Yes, very much indeed, Syzreth's eyes whirled happily as she basked in the hot sun and male attention.

D'nes smirked and took a seat across from V'nan. "A drink? Oh you know my weakness I see." D'nes was never one to pass up a good drink, Galanth was never much of a fan, but he dealt well with his rider's drinking habit. D'nes felt that he did well in adding himself into the group and hoped that his dragon was doing the same. Sadly D'nes knew better, his beast wasn't the friendliest out there. Galanth could only ignore poor Caith for so long, he would have continued but the copper had asked him a question and it was only fair to answer. From my understanding yes, my wing will have the pleasure of Syzreth's grace and power. Even D'nes had to wonder what made male dragons so.. charming to their female counterparts. He would not question his dragon's actions, after all in the end it would only lead himself to trouble. Galanth never took lightly anyone questioning his motives, not even his own rider.

D'nes smiled at Rin, she was a good looking women and he would remember that fact for later. "I will be great to have you, the wing enjoys new additions. You'll fit right in, I warn you, a pretty one like you will catch the attention of my wingleader pretty quickly." In his head he couldn't help but laugh and make a comment. Not that she has not caught my attention as well. D'nes knew he had a strong attraction to pretty and he also knew it would probably lead him into trouble one day. "So what do you think about Vaioa? I've been here since I've impressed, never transferred between Weyrs."

The comment she gave had the smile grow even bigger. Careful or your jaw might break. Oh quiet, you. "All things considered, huh? Personally, I don't think there was much to consider when I came but that's up to you, I suppose."

Her fingertips grazed the top of his hand, and the morose feeling from earlier returned. "Yes, we lost a lot of good people that day." But the past was the past. There was no time to think of it all. "I can only hope that it will not be as terrible next time."

V'nan stopped for a moment. Now this was a path he did not want to tread. Did she perhaps lose a loved one? Or... maybe even a lover? Either way, he knew better than to overstep his boundaries. "I am sorry to hear that, Rin." Well, his loverboy routine passed up and flopped. "But I'm sure that wherever they are, they're happy." He gave a squeeze on her hand, giving what comfort he could at the moment.

The copperrider had to laugh at the D'nes' comment. "D'nes, it would be irresponsible NOT to drink." He poured a glass for his friend. "Drink it up! There is plenty more where that came from."

Caith inwardly grinned. At least the brown was on speaking terms now. There will be much to see from her. Flopping down himself into the warms sand, the beryllium cocked his head towards Syzerth. I certainly hope you do. The sun is nice to have when it's here almost all day.

V'nan chuckled. "Ah, O'zen." The wingleader's name alone had him laugh. "He is an interesting man, I'll give him that. You'll have some fun with him, I'll tell you that, Rin."
