Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

...Seriously? This is Vaioa? What the shards kind of shaffit was that bluerider saying about this being a pleasant and friendly place? A scowl crossed the woman's face, irritated that she had to come to this rundown place of a weyr. And for what? For not having good behavior? That this would be a great change of pace for her? Iscia was more than irritated now. She was downright pissed.

It's not that bad, Iscia. I mean, we've only just arrived, a grey dragon said from outside the weyrbowl, taking in the scenery and sounds of their new home. If you just give it some time -

Please shut up, Hinleryth. I don't want to talk about it now and I sure as hell don't want you mentioning it later. The blonde snapped. "Fardles, this is so annoying. Of all the places I had to go to it had to be here. Faranth knows what the Weyrwoman and Weyrleader here are like. Probably a bunch of idiots like G'rat and whatnot." Oh, how she missed creeping out her Weyrleader and his woman back home. So much fun to see their faces... They were incompetent wusses anyway, the whole lot of them. No wonder they sent her away. Too scared of what she was truly capable of.

"Doesn't matter..." Why do you always have to be like that? Iscia snorted. Why do you always have to back sass me? Last time I checked you weren't my mother. Draconic eyes narrowed into yellow slits. Hinleryth really wasn't in the mood for her rider's bad attitude. So she took off to nearby ledge to sulk and sun herself.

That's what I thought. Well, might as well get acquainted with some of the dimglows around here. "You!" the greyrider barked to one of the kitchefolk. "Yes? Is there something you - " "I don't need all that goody-goody nonsense. Go and get me some wine. And make sure it's the good stuff. None of that crap from Southern Boll, either." The woman gaped at her. "U-Um... I-I don't think we - " Iscia's hand slammed on the table. "I said now, girl. Are you too daft to hear what your superiors tell you? Or are all people in this desert wasteland too stupid to understand? I want it now." Utterly terrified, the woman scurried off to the back to retrieve the blonde's request.

Can't you be a little bit nice? Iscia slumped into her chair, waiting. 'Nice' isn't in my vocabulary, last I recall.

N'ril wandered into the kitchens, looking for a stiff drink and maybe a hand of cards if there were any players about. He located his drink and looked around for someone to sit with. He paused as he spotted an ill tempered-looking woman shouting at one of the serving girls. He wandered in their direction, wondering what was going on.

By the time he reached the unfamiliar woman the girl had scurried off. Not knowing what the problem had been, but still wanting to help, the brownrider decided friendliness would be his best tack. He smiled at the blond and raised a few fingers off his glass in a sort of wave.

"Hi. I'm N'ril. Recent transfer?" He sipped his drink, studying her face. She was really pissed. He braced himself for a tongue-lashing, but kept up his pleasant demeanor.

Faranth, she officially hated this place. She wanted to go back to Keroon, back home where things weren't so hot and icky and disgusting. Where the hell was that drink of hers?

Well, at least it wasn't all that bad. If people like that worker just now, settling herself in here would be a cinch. A word here, a little nudge there... yup, she would have this place in the palm of her hand in no time.

Speaking of... seemed she already attracted some company. And a brownrider, no less! If there was anything she liked more than back sassing anyone it was getting into people's minds. And that meant those who were high up in the ranks. Still, she didn't want to give the man any ideas that she was soft-hearted.

"What do you think?" she snapped out. "I'm not one for this horrendous heat you people call weather, as you can see." Sweat was already beading on her forehead, mussing her hair and making her more annoyed. "But what can I do? Guess some find enjoyment in getting sunburn and sweating on a daily basis."

"But anyway, I'm Iscia. Greyrider of Hinleryth." She checked his knots, a grin spreading on her face. One of her wing, huh? "And I suppose you'll be one of my wingmates, correct?"

The sun is hot, I'm tired now. I'm going to go eat, you should eat too! I can feel your tummy and it is hungry, Orillanth cheerfully chattered away as the greenpair circled down into the Weyrbowl after a long and boring patrol. Ever since he'd arrived, patrols had doubled and he'd taken up his fair share of them, not that he had to like it.

Right you are love, just drop me by the Lower Caverns and you go see yourself to the herd pens. How's a bath sound later? D'ras grinned and thumped Orillanth's patterned shoulder.

Good good good! I'll roll in the mud now so you can scrub it off, the green's voice rippled with laughter as she touched down and let her rider off.

Scowling briefly up at her as she swooped over to the herdbeast pen, he shook his head and picked up his heels in a little dance. Felt good to stretch his legs after the long flight. Whistling brightly, he ducked into the dining hall and blinked as his eyes adjusted.

"I'm not one for this horrendous heat you people call weather, as you can see. But what can I do? Guess some find enjoyment in getting sunburn and sweating on a daily basis."

D'ras turned to see a new grayrider speaking with his friend N'ril, and chuckled quietly to himself as he moved to retrieve a bowl of fruit and some cooled juice for his lunch. The rest of her irratable speech was lost on him as he whistled cheerfully again, skipping a little and swooping over next to N'ril with a dramatic dance flourish, plopping down on the bench.

"Oh 'ello mate, how goes it?" He clapped the brownrider on the back in a comradely sort of way. "WHEW, how about this heat eh? Nothing like it to bring the hairs out on yer chest, hmm missy?" He turned his gaze to the new woman, his blue eyes glittering with suppressed amusement.

"What do you think? I'm not one for this horrendous heat you people call weather, as you can see."

N'ril's smile faded a bit under her harsh tone, but he didn't waver. He glanced up at her forehead as she indicated, and noticed the sweat beginning to form there. He felt a pang of sympathy for her. It was only Spring. This heat was bearable. How would she cope come summer? He wondered if she'd transfer away again, but she continued, drawing him out of his thoughts.

"But what can I do? Guess some find enjoyment in getting sunburn and sweating on a daily basis."

N'ril smiled at little, his tone gentle and matter-of-fact as he said, "Believe me, we hate sunburns and sweat as much as the next person. The lower caverns offer quite a bit of relief, however. You'll cool off once you've been in here long enough."

"But anyway, I'm Iscia. Greyrider of Hinleryth." She grinned as he checked his knots, and he smiled cheerfully back at her, thinking perhaps she wasn't always as thorny as she seemed. "And I suppose you'll be one of my wingmates, correct?"

N'ril nodded, seeing from her own knots that this was true. "Yes. I'm actually acting Wingsecond for the time being. Allagoth was severly Threadscored during the first Fall. So until he recovers, Nazacth and I are filling in."

Before the brownrider could say any more, D'ras came in and smacked him on the back. N'ril looked over at the greenrider with a vaguely amused look on his face. D'ras was something of a force to be reckoned with, but he had a good heart. N'ril wondered how Iscia would react to him.

"Oh 'ello mate, how goes it?" N'ril opened his mouth to speak, but D'as carried on before he could make a sound. "WHEW, how about this heat eh? Nothing like it to bring the hairs out on yer chest, hmm missy?"

N'ril let out a hearty laugh and looked at D'ras with an expression that said 'Come, now. Really?' "D'ras. Ladies hardly get hairs springing off their chests. Especially one as lovely as Iscia here." N'ril hoped the compliment would help sooth her nerves.

He turned to her and gestured to D'ras. "Iscia, meet D'ras of Orillanth. He also flies in our wing. D'ras this is Iscia of Hinleryth. She's also a new transfer." He smiled softly at them, hoping they'd get along.

Well, she had to guess that to deal with this on a daily basis most would have the same issued as her. Not that she would ever agree to saying that. Iscia had no need to to worry about other people's problems. And what N'ril said was true. It was starting to slowly cool off, thank Faranth. "I suppose so. But I'm not one to really like to get all messy and sweaty. Some do like to keep their appearances nice."

She rolled her eyes. "No idea who Allagoth is. But congratulations, I suppose. Must be a nice change for you, I would think?" He seems nice. Isicia sighed. Nice doesn't make a person a good companion all the time, Hinleryth. You can't keep being naive to that anymore.

A loud, booming voice rang out, and Iscia had to resist the urge to yell at the offender for scaring the living shaffit out of her. Who in the bloody hell thought scaring people was a great first impression. Certainly not this guy.

And to add on to the irritation was he sickly sweet cheerfulness. Faranth, she hated folk with those annoyingly bubbly voices like his. Forcing a stressed smirk, she replied to D'ras with, "Maybe for you, greenrider. I for one, however, have no hairs you speak of to... bring out, as you say."

Letting N'ril introduce her himself, she noticed the one drudge returning with a glass and the still petrified look on her face. Sighing, Iscia took the glass and shooed the girl away, who gladly took the chance and darted off. "Ah, D'ras. A... pleasure." Taking a sip, she sighed. "So wingmates, may I ask who our wingleader is for upcoming Fall?" Hopefully not a dimglow like hers back at Igen.

Dextrous hands spun and flipped a redfruit from side to side as he listened to their polite exchange and his face lit up when the grayrider addressed him.

"Ah yes, m'dear. Our Wingleader is none other than the Weyrleader himself, I'm happy to say!" he grinned, his crooked smile usually enough to charm any lady into at least a giggle. But not this one, it seemed. Not even a slap on the face for his annoyance!

A tough nut to crack, this! Hmm.

"You know, it can be a lot of pressure, being a new addition into the Weyrleader's wing. Orillanth and I can always look out for you. It gets nervewracking up there for a delicate flower like yourself. Everyone watching you... Thread falling all around, the Weyrleader's judgement hanging over your head..."

He waggled his fingers and his voice dropped an octive into a mysterious tremor.

Suddenly, he perked up again and took a bite out of the redfruit he'd been juggling around, "But you're well-come at any rate and I'm sure such a lovely lady like yourself wouldn't crack under the pressure! Being trained in ah... where was it you said you were from?"
