Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The sun was only just beginning to set on the horizon. By all means a young sixteen, nearly seventeen year old girl should be wide awake and full of energy at this time. However, that was not how it worked for Galide. As she entered the Candidate Barracks the first thing she did was walk straight over to her bed and collapse in to it, even though she was still wearing her day clothes. Today she had had Barracks chores, like she always did. There where many different assignments for that category, but today she had gotten the one assignment that she didn't think fit the name. Mine duty. All day long she had been down in the mines, slaving away like some wher.

A scowl crossed the redheads face at this. There had been so many whers down there and outside the mines, helping their handlers. It wasn't the fact that they where put to work that upset her, it was the way their handlers spoke to them. As if they could understand them or had emotions. The idea was preposterous in her mind, whers didn't have feelings! They where little more than animals that should be loaded up and put to work.

A sigh left her mouth at this thought. Maybe if they had the whers do more work the miners wouldn't need candidates to come down and help them. Like most people Galide enjoyed fresh air, being trapped down in those mines was horrible. That will end once I have my own dragon, she thought. Weyrlings have more important things to do than go down and work in some scummy mine. With that thought in her head she closed her eyes and attempted to go to sleep.

((hope you don't mind me jumping in here))

She had been calm all day. Why did she have to act up now? Tahven wouldn’t have been able to stand the mines without his tiny companion. Now that there was clear sky above her head however the young flit thought she could dash away. Feeling rather grimy he trudged on after her. Thankfully Nim was making enough noise for him to follow, but to keep within hearing distance he had to run. Not that running was difficult, he had planned an excursion after a quick rest, but right now it was annoying. Working in the mines had been incredibly difficult for him, especially since he had to go underground today. The ceiling had actually scraped against his head! Shivering at the memory he ran on.

Nim chattered far ahead. Ungainly but quick for a hatchling she made her way closer and closer to the candidate quarters. She bumped into a rather unfortunate drudge and with a squeal of surprise she fluttered away. With a quick snap at the workers face she darted off feeling rather offended. Hearing the commotion ahead Tahven sprinted forward, nearly running into the drudge himself. The woman appeared quite flustered and after being attacked by a firelizard hatchling and almost being run over by a candidate she was not in a friendly mood. Tahven ducked away from her angry swats, mumbling an apology for his actions and Nim’s. At least that confirmed the hatchling’s direction.

Meanwhile Nim had successfully located the candidate barracks. However, she had made a left when she should have made a right and found herself quite misplaced in the girl’s section of the barracks. Tahven wasn’t too far behind, and had finally made it to the entrance of the candidate area, but now Nim’s chattering seemed to echo everywhere. Figuring she had gone to his room that’s where he initially headed.

The little mint green firelizard had discovered a different room however. It didn’t matter who this person was. It was a thing like Tahven that could feed her and she was very hungry after being in the mine all day. That’s why she had flown away from her bonded after all; she would find food quicker than he could bring it to her. Quite tired from her long flight the little flit landed on Galide’s bed. Then with a few hopping jumps she gave a great squall and leapt onto the girl’s stomach. She creeled again begging to be fed.

Having discovered that his firelizard was not in his room Tahven began to get nervous. He tore his room apart wondering where she might be hiding, until he heard her hungry cries. Without a thought to the restrictions he dashed in the direction of her noise. Running into the halls of the girl’s area he called out, “Nim! Where have you gotten too? Nim!”

The young firelizard was ignoring him for the moment. This fire haired girl would feed her. This creature must feed her she demanded it. Nim’s frustrated roar of hunger came out more like a squeak as the annoyed flit nipped at Galide, demanding that she find food.
