Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Irgin's jaw hung down as Bo said that he was a Candidate. "So, you're going to protect us all one day?" He asked, slightly in awe. Being a rider was dangerous, he couldn't imagine what it must be like. Waiting for a dragon, then waiting to fight Thread and then one day, saving lots of people. Bo he reasoned, like N'ril, must be really brave. "I don't even know who Bresaith is." He said a little shyly, hoping Bo wouldn't be offended. He really didn't know many people at the Weyr in all honesty. Mostly the kitchen staff but that was about it...well, Bo and N'ril aside.

He stared mutely as Bo tried to calm down his firelizard, confused as to why they'd argue like that. Bo he thought, must be brave, and have many headaches too.
"Oh!" Irgin exclaimed, hearing that the Green wasn't his, but his friends. He peered along the line of people, smiling cheerfully at the girl Bo had been waving at. "She looks friendly." He said, quietly observing the girl.

Hearing that it was indeed ok for him to try for a firelizard, he grinned and thrust the meat out further. His brows knitted together in a frown of deep concentration, waiting for the next eggs to shatter. When they did, he was prepared to gasp in awe and make cute enthusiastic noises at the new babies. Instead, one of the blue's took a huge bite out of the brown and Irgin froze. Eyes wide, his mouth formed a small 'o' as he stood there, stiff as a board. Did they really eat each other??? He was calmed a little as the brown scampered away and found someone to care for it, even the light, icy blue found someone. What he hadn't been prepared for, was for the angry blue to tottle over and lunge at the meat in his own fingers.

Irgin stared down at the firelizard, who clung on to the meat until Irgin let go. That was gone, and he was barked at. Bemused, Irgin was grateful when Bo handed him more meat. At his comment, he stared, worried at the boy as he tentatively fed the small mouth lined with teeth, more food. Still uncertain, he nodded mutely as Bo said they had matching lizards. After a moment he blinked. "Friends?" He asked curiously, feeling himself puff up a bit with pride. "I haven't made any proper friends here yet." He said, growing enthusiastic and bobbing about a little, much to the blue's dismay who was trying to grab another morsel of meat and creeling angrily. "I'd love to be your friend." He beamed, feeling a tug on his hand. The blue was hanging by his jaws from the meat scrap Irgin had been waving about. Instantly, he let it go and watched him struggle for a moment, before gulping down the whole thing.

Hesitantly, he picked up the firelizard, holding it at arms length as if it may explode. He glanced at his bowl, discarded on the hearth and mused. Swiftly, he plugged the gaping maw of the blue with more food, then swung round, lizard in his outstretched arms to Bo. "N-now what do I do?" He asked, peering with raised eyebrows as the blue yawned widely and then seemed to flop in his hands, legs and wings drooping everywhere.

The last of the eggs split open, leaving only a large mess of shattered shells behind. a dainty brown and a brightly-colored green emerged, along with... a third lizard. It was not immediately clear if this one was a male or female, for the lizard's hide was distinctly blue-green, and too dark to tell which hue was dominant.

The brown was bright but not pale, a vivid cinnamon hue with a goldy-yellow tone to his wingsails. He was creeling in hunger insistently, glaring balefully at the pieces of meat held out by the crowd... Though he was starving, he did not trust the hands he saw reaching toward him.

The green was a bright mint color with pale green near white coating her limbs, underbelly, neck, and face. She seemed only disdainful of her brown brother and leveled an irritated glare ar him before barking harshly.

He hissed back, eyes whirling red.

Before there could be another scuffle, though, the green flounced away. Fine! If he wanted to sit there and starve to death, it wasn't her fault. There was plenty of food right there and she'd take it! She darted forward, snapping up the piece of meat in her mouth and growling at the offending hand. More meat!

Tahven

The dark lizard looked at the brown and flared his wings open. Cornflower blue stood out on the sails, and when he lifted his neck to creel hungrily, the same color showed on his exposed throat. A blue, then, though curiously colored. The brown paid him no mind, standing his ground crossly, and the blue gave him one more glance before giving up. Well, he couldn't do much more, not when he was this hungry himself! He was rewarded when a piece of meat thrust close to him. He snatched it up and then scampered after the hand, hoping for more.

The brown seemed to realize he was alone and grunted softly. Well-- well he could just hide in the shells all day... but his hunger really was bothersome. Downright painful. And now he had to take the risk too of exposing himself to danger while finding food... but he couldn't take it anymore! With a small cry he moved forward into the crowd, finding the first piece of meat that was offered to him and accepting it warily.

D'kir - tag Tahven

Some very unusual flitts had already hatched, and both D'kir and Tanohth made little sounds of approval and awe as they each flopped across the nest toward their new owners. Biscuit's genes certainly had a flair to them, it would seem! He glanced around at those who had managed to secure a hatchling, and noticed Tahven, one of his formerly fellow candidates, looking rather bedraggled. He frowned in sympathy for the man, he'd heard that the candidate hadn't taken well to his rejection... and he didn't really blame him, after how long he'd been Standing.

Just as he decided he would try and reach out to Tahven and offer some words of encouragement, he felt a small weight hop onto his hand and pull a chunk of meat from the handful he held. Looking down, he saw a squawking, imperious looking firelizard with the most unusual coloring he'd seen out of this batch yet. As his mind filled with the feeling of Impression, albeit a much duller version of the feeling he'd felt when Tanohth entered his life, he peered closely at the baby.

"You must be the palest... brown? I've ever seen... ouch!" D'kir exclaimed as the firelizard, sensing the meaning of the word brown, hissed and nipped him. How dare he be mistaken for a mere brown! As the hatchling shook his wings irritably, D'kir noticed how the sun reflected off of the clearly metallic hue in the hide, "Oh... you're a bronze! You're beautiful..."

That was more like it! The little bronze harrumphed and went back to stuffing his face. What should we call him? Tanohth's voice sounded amused as he peered at his little bronze cousin.

"I think... I'll call him Calen. After my great uncle. He acts just like that old grouch!" D'kir chuckled and turned to see how those around him fared, just in time to spot a lovely little green claim Tahven as Hers.

"Congratulations, Tahven! I knew you'd get one, she's gorgeous!"

always classy, never trashy
The last of the eggs burst open. Tahven’s heart leapt into his throat and at the last moment he remembered the meat roll he was holding. Maybe luck would smile on him today. Forgetting the crowd he put his hand out to the nest still crouching low. There was enough room down here, his long arm gave him an advantage, and no one seemed to notice him for the moment. He watched breathless as the little mint green barked at her brother. A grin came to his lips as his eyes looked into the little whirling red dots.

Then she struck, and the food he’d offered was gone. Tahven was silent, mouth dropping as the tingle of impression hit him. So that was what it felt like, the little creature growled at him, demanding more food. He could feel that slight edge of hunger, even after the scrap she was starving. Smiling he kept his hand outstretched. Tahven almost spoke to her, but was still in shock, amazingly enough she got his meaning and jumped into his palm. The little firelizard was so tiny and light! Holding her protectively in his hand he withdrew his arm and slowly stood, moving towards the edges of the group.

She growled at him impatient to be fed her fill. Thankfully a helper of some sort shoved a bowl with plenty of scraps in it at him. Tahven took it gratefully and began feeding the green as quickly as she could eat. He couldn’t believe it, this was his firelizard. He’d impressed! Well…he’d been there with handing out food…still there was hope now! She had become impatient with his way of feeding her, and promptly fluttered over to attach to his wrist. Bowl of scraps in front of her now she plunged her head in.

Tahven heard a voice near to him, and quickly looked around, nearly upsetting the little green latched onto his wrist. She screeched at him fanning her wings as if to slow him down. The candidate spotted D’kir, and couldn’t help but grin. It was a step forward, Tahven hadn’t been able to smile at any of the weyrlings before now. With a tiny dragon latched to him however, he couldn’t help but smile. Blue eyes regaining their warmth from the lifeless haze of before he strode over to D’kir.

Without thought he hugged the weyrling, remaining mindful of both newly hatched firelizards. Stepping back it was easy to see that there was a shine to Tahven’s eyes, a very unmanly wetness gathered at the corner of his eye. Looking down at the little green she turned her head up to peer at him. Her lovely mint face stained red with gore she chirruped happily now that her belly was full. Tahven set the empty bowl aside and very carefully pet her, mindful of her diminutive size compared to his hand. “Thank you D’kir…I…well, it seems I’m still capable of impressing.”

The size and color couldn’t be less important to him. This was his firelizard, and she was absolutely wonderful. Belly stuffed she cried at him, demanding to be held so she didn’t have to balance so precariously on his wrist. More than willing to oblige Tahven held her in his hands and kept her close to his body. She was not quite ready to sleep however, and she swiveled her head to look at her brother Calen. The green called out in greeting to him, bringing Tahven’s attention to the other new flit.

“Oh! Sorry I didn’t notice I’m just…” He looked down at the little firelizard staring up at him, “overwhelmed.” Smiling he bet the little creature, but she looked disgruntled with him, and herself. Vainly she licked at her face, trying to clear it off, and then she creeled at Tahven, admonishing him for his own filthiness. “Well he certainly is beautiful,” He said turning back to look to D’kir, “is he a brown?” The green snorted below, and Tahven inspected the hatchling more closely and noticed a metallic sheen this time. “Oh! A bronze? Well congratulations! I’m sure your own dragon will be delighted. Do you know how we’re supposed to name them?” Tahven should know, he had lived at a weyr his entire life, but his thoughts were spinning at the moment. If he had just taken a moment to think it over he’d realize he could just name the green right then and there, but for some reason he felt uneasy.

MASSIVE TEXTWALL

Atlen watched in horror as the huge blue sunk his teeth into his brown brother's hide, she pushed her way forward past a few people to try and get closer and holding out a piece of meat to try and get the little creature's attention. He picked himself up off the sands daintily, obviously favoring the wound, she wondered in the back of her mind if he would end up going between she did her best to project out that she would love and take care of him. Somehow it must have got his attention because when he darted into the crowd he immediately latched onto the meat in Atlen's hand. She pulled the tiny brown close and cradled him in her hands while she fed him. "It's alright now. Eat up, you're safe now." she whispered softly, offering him another morsel. He whimpered softly and kept eating but it was plain to see that the bite hurt him greatly. With her hands occupied by holding and feeding him she couldn't manage to try and stop it from bleeding.

--

Visani laughed quietly as Bo left with his parting warning of pestering her with firelizard appearances. She had no doubts that he would follow through on his word. She bounced on the balls of her feet, trying to see above the crowd and watching as new happy parents were exiting with their new charges. When she'd gotten Biscuit she hadn't quite been expecting to be quite this happy to see her babies go to new homes. It wasn't like with holders who bought eggs to show status, it was an equal opportunity for everyone to try their luck and if the hatchlings weren't happy with the people presented then they had the option to choose another. Vaioa truly was becoming quite a flutter with the colorful pets since the new queens had started to mature.

Biscuit thrummed as the last few eggs hatched, a green, blue and the final brown found bounds with people in the crowd. She nosed the red sands, looking for any eggs who's occupants might have been having trouble escaping but was pleased to note that they'd all been strong and healthy enough to hatch on their own. She spread her wings and lifted herself from the hearth to search the thinning crowd for her mistress. She shrieked loudly and barreled herself into Visani's chest. Crooning and growling with happiness.

Visani wrapped her arms around Biscuit, cuddling her and making equally happy sounds. Happy to finally have her firelizard back. She looked up wondering how much of a fool she was really making of herself and was surprised to see Atlen standing there with obviously a baby firelizard in her hands. But the face she was making was a mix of worry and pain.

Visani urged Biscuit onto her shoulder and hurried over to the girl, "Atlen, is everything alright?" She hadn't gotten to really see the girl since she'd Impressed, though she was sure that Atlen was perfectly capable of taking good care of Oceth.

Atlen looked up and there weren't tears in her eyes but they were surely a wetness there as she held out her hands, "He got bit by one of his brothers. I don't know if he's going to be ok." The baby surely wasn't looking too good, his belly was full but he had yet to fall asleep and he was whining softly every few moments.

Visani carefully examined the bite, it wasn't deep but ichor was still dripping from the punctures. Biscuit crooned softly and climbed down her mistress' arm to nuzzle the little brown while Visi dug around in her pockets for a tissue. "Hold that to the wound to stop the bleeding." she held out the small cloth and Atlen did what she was told. "He'll be fine, he's strong and healthy," Visani continued, "He just needs some numbweed and rest."

The girl looked up at her with hopeful eyes, "You sure?"

Visani nodded, "Yes I'm sure. Young firelizards are rather resilient. Once it scabs up though you'll want to make sure that he doesn't itch at it and you need to make sure you oil him every day and keep him happy and comfortable. So maybe get him his own pillow or a basket full of furs for him to sleep in."

Atlen let out a shaky breath, "Ok, yeah I can do that. Thank you, I just.. "

Visani laughed softly, "It's ok. If you need any help you know that Emanth is always listening. He'd probably love to meet Oceth sometime too."

"I'd like to see Emanth, Oceth would probably love him. I bet he was jumping up and down when I impressed." Atlen chuckled slightly at that mental image and gently ran her thumb over her hatchling's neck. "As long as he compliments her he'll be her best friend forever."

"More than jumping up and down, he couldn't hold still for three days afterwards. I'm sure she'll get sick of his doting. But really, I'm glad she chose you. You'll do Vaioa proud I'm sure." And she was fully confident that the young woman would. It was almost as though Emanth had known she was special without realizing why. He was strange like that sometimes.

Atlen was silent for a moment, "I will try. I don't really even know what I'm doing. The thought of ever Impressing a queen never occurred to me and now everyone looks at me as though for some reason I'm not myself anymore. But Oceth really hasn't changed who I am I don't think."

"You've got plenty of time to figure it out. If she hasn't changed you yet she will, there's no doubt. Emanth is still changing me and we've been together for nearly ten turns. I was a right spiteful bitra before he came along." she chuckled and looked down at the little brown who was now sleeping quite peacefully. "I think he's fallen asleep, do you know what you're going to name him yet?"

The girl looked down in surprise, she hadn't even noticed he'd gone to sleep, "Umm.. I didn't really get a chance to think about giving him a name yet.." she sat silent for a few moments while she sorted through possible names. One in particular came to mind, it had been used in a song that she learned to describe the colors of rock in a valley, "Hetch. I think his name is going to be Hetch." she finally said. "Hey, Oceth will probably be awake at around six tomorrow. You and Emanth could stop by the barracks and meet her if you like."

Visani grinned, the name sounded fitting and it had a nice ring it. She was surprised by the offer, she usually didn't spend much time around the barracks since she had no reason to really be there very often. "We would love to! I'll have Emanth bring breakfast for her if that would be alright."

"Yes that would be perfect, she'll love him even more!" she looked down at Hetch again, already in love with the little creature, "I should be getting back to her now. She's asleep but if she wakes up and realizes that I've got Hetch here she'll be running across the weyrbowl so she can meet him. So see you in the morning?"

"Yep we'll be there." she nodded. Atlen smiled back and hurried to the door with her new charge. Emanth you better catch a big enough bovine tomorrow that you can share. The brown was already excited beyond measure, he'd been wanting to meet the queen that had chosen the young woman that he had taken upon himself to search. Oh I will! You should hurry back and oil me so that I can look my best!
