Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Biscuit's First Clutch; 18 eggs Fresh out of the oven!

Visani

Visani looked up from her glass of wine when the commotion started and the humming met her ears, Biscuit's eggs are hatching! the brown trilled loudly from his ledge before Visani could even form the words in her own mind. She eagerly jumped up from her seat, not bothering with the bowls of meat that were being passed around. She only wanted to see her queen's babies as they finally hatched. She'd been surprised that there had been so many especially for Biscuit's first clutch, but also slightly worried that she wouldn't quite know what to do with the eggs. But her pet had proven her wrong and been a vicious defender of her nest even against her mistress. Visani had earned herself more than one nip on her fingers in the recent weeks.

More than anything Visani was just relieved to be able to finally have her Biscuit back. Sure she was proud and excited about the eggs but she missed snuggling with the gold, and even her morning attempt to smother her had been dearly missed.

She heard her name called and Bo bounced up to her, "Hey Bo! Yeah that's my Biscuit up there." she smiled back at him, how could she not? He must be in his later teens but still she felt this overwhelming urge to pick him up and carry him around like a little kid. She refrained though, "Yeah they're pretty wonderful. I can't believe I went so long without one. But Biscuit is perfect." she wanted to talk more but it seemed as though the lad was distracted by the hatching, clearly eager to join the fray. He squeezed her forearm and offered his company if she ever needed to talk and then telling her that she was 'great' it made her laugh softly "Yes of course, I might take you up on that." she watched in amusement as he held out a piece of meat to try and attract one of the buggers. She hoped he did, he was a caring young man that would surely be wonderful at taking care of one of Biscuit's babies.

A strong healthy brown hatched then a green disappeared into the crowd. She gasped when she caught sight of what seemed to be a gold but green tints were clearly visible so it had to be a bronze. Well that was slightly disappointing but he was still a bronze and there were plenty of eggs left. A green with a personality that in some way's mirrored Biscuit's hatched and found a partner in a dark haired young woman. Then there was a pretty little blue and it was heading in Bo's direction! She held her breath even as the little creature took its first meal from the lad's hand. She grinned even as he winked at her and gave him a quick pat on the shoulder, "Now go feed him till he sleeps." She watched on excitedly to see what else would hatch and who would Impress a new friend.

Olayla

Olayla could hardly contain her excitement, she'd almost forgotten how cute baby flitts could be in their silly baby antics but now she watched intently. Trying to attract any one of their attentions. It was strange, every other time she'd gotten a flitt she hadn't had to try and do this. Jasper had almost literally landed in her lap. Shiva and Gaia had been gifts while Onyx and Zircon had decided that she would be the one who fed them. Three new eggs had just hatched and she eyed the little bronze but he darted elsewhere, which was probably for the best. Jasper wouldn't have liked to have to deal with a little upstart male. Those who had managed to Impress were moving away and she was able to push forward, a pretty little green lounged on the sands and she offered the meat hopefully but she seemed to not mind, she would find food when she was ready.

Jasper chirped and crooned to the pretty baby, his little claws digging painfully into Ola's shoulder. She reached up to swat at him, she really should have worn a thicker shirt or tucked a piece of leather there. If only she'd known that there would be a hatching. She felt a tug on her hand while she was distracted and looked down to spy the little green grabbing the meat from her, "Oh!" she squeaked excitedly and offered another piece which was immediately snapped up. She reached out her hand and carefully scooped up the pretty baby, who squawked with irritation but was immediately pacified with more food. Ola backed away from the crowd so that she could feed her new charge in relative piece.

"See that's a good girl. Eat all you want, there's plenty." she shifted through names in her head, she'd been tossing one back and forth for awhile now if she were to impress another little female. "Danu. Do you like that name little girl?" she cooed. Danu only creeled impatiently for more food which Ola immediately provided. She was perfect for their little family, surely the others would love a new little one to watch after and teach. Finally Danu yawned hugely and immediately fell asleep while she kneaded her little claws into Olayla's shirt.

Since arriving that afternoon, F’sh had formed a few solid opinions of his new home. It was too sharding hot to be about much in the afternoon but if you could stand it the orange-red desert was extraordinarily beautiful, having a Hold across the Weyrbowl was terribly convenient, and shards and shells the weyrfolk were better looking down south. Trouth seemed to agree as he’d spent the afternoon sunning on his new ledge and shamelessly admiring the local greens. Yes, they were going to be quite happy here.

F’sh left his electric blue dragon to that pleasant pastime and set about exploring the rest of the Weyr. The lower caverns would take months to memorize, but there was always the kitchens and the Mess Hall. The latter was likely to be buzzing with activity at this time of day. The bluerider wasn’t disappointed; the mess hall was indeed seething with people, particularly around the hearth area. Fire lizards of all colors dipped and dived and before he could open his mouth to ask what all the commotion was about, a small boy with the knots of a brownrider was shoving a bowl of meat into his hands and smiling up at him.

“Don’t just stand there looking stupid,” D’art told the new rider with a cheeky grin on his face. His own fire lizards fluttered excitedly about him, only bronze Ganon and Brown Bootstrap staying put on his shoulders. “Aren’t you gonna try and get yourself a fire lizard…oh shaffit. I don’t know your name. Are you new? You look new.”

A fire lizard hatching? F’sh was instantly buzzing with an over excess of energy to match D’art’s blatant enthusiasm. He’d never had a chance to Impress one of the little buggers before and Faranth only knew Trouth had been prodding him to get one for some time now. He stood on his tip toes to get a better look at the hatching. “F’sh. My name is F’sh. Thanks, kid.” He pushed his way through the crowd, grinning ear to ear and left D’art behind him, too small to pierce the roiling crowd and looking very puzzled.

“What kind of name is F’sh?”

Three eggs hatched in quick succession, sending shattered eggshell fragments flying. A brown, a blue, and a green emerged, eliciting some oohs and aahs from the crowd. They each had dramatic coloring, perhaps inherited from their biological mother.

The green was very dark, somewhat mossy and shadowed all over with charcoal. She hissed angrily at the crowd and took a few steps back, baring her fangs angrily. The blue next to her nosed her and chirped. He was a midnight or royal blue on his torso, but along his head and wings, the color faded into a purply brown. On his wings the edges were fully nutmeg-colored.

The green did not take well and barked sharply at the blue, but the blue stood his ground calmly, chirping once more at her encouragingly.

Their bigger, brown brother harrumphed impatiently and stepped forward. His stomach was hungry and something smelled appetizing. There was no time for silly antics. His hide was a mix of bright, coppery brown, and a more dull, greenish brown on his wings and back. He didn't take time to preen, however, but stepped forward and found the first piece of meat thrust at him. Insistently he latched onto it, growling his hunger.

The blue remained a moment longer, trying to encourage his sister. The attention was not bad; it was quite good! And there was food! She was having none of it, though, and finally he shrugged and moved away, spying one plump morsel and vanishing between outstretched fingers until he chomped down on the one he wanted.

The green gave a hiss again at the crowd but was surprised to hear a hiss back. She looked up sharply only to see Rita (a larger and older green) circling the crowd but spitting angrily back at her. She puffed out her chest grumpily and marched forward, eyes on the more brightly colored green. The nerve! Just to be contrary-- she hurried forward and found D'art, snarling at him and sending images of raw hunger. She'd show them-- she'd show them both. Food, now!

Irgin watched in awe as more shells split apart. Every now and then he popped a small mouthful of food into his jaws and chewed. This was frequently interrupted as tiny limbs and wings poked through shells and fought for freedom. They were even smaller than he was! The whole thing was rather special. They'd only had a few eggs back home and he'd missed seeing them all hatch. He was pleased though, that he'd been roused from his nap and hadn't been chased off from watching. This was too exciting to miss.

He was content watching, staring with huge eyes as the babies squabbled amongst each other or went in search of food and happy new owners. Suddenly though, there was a boy pushing meat into his fingers. For a moment, he wondered if he was trying to help him eat; funny Weyr people. It soon became evident though that he was trying to help him. Help him with what though? Obediently, he held out food like the others. Was he even allowed? He looked about for a moment, then peered up at the boy as he continued talking. His name was Bo? That was easy to remember. He smiled at the boys beaming face, and looked at his firelizards. "I'm Irgin." He said, puffing up his chest a little. "I only got here recently. Do you work in the kitchens to?" He asked, curious.

Another firelizard, this time a green came and plonked itself on Bo's head and Irgin giggled. "You have so many friends!" He exclaimed, clearly impressed. He peered at the meat in his fingers, held out towards the eggs. "I'm really allowed? We didn't get many eggs at home and they were for all the adults. Mostly the stuffy ones." He said with a thoughtful frown. They'd strutted about like proud wherries, firelizards on their arms and shoulders. He didn't want to be like that. He sure hoped it wasn't mandatory. Bo didn't seem that way though.

Three more eggs hatched, leaving only seven of the original eighteen rocking impatiently and cracking out of their shells. Two blues and a small brown emerged from the eggshell remnants, creeling with hunger. The first blue was a bright and pale color, and decently sized, but the second blue was as large as any of the browns who had hatched this round, and nearing the size of most of the adult blues in the room. Somehow he was unexpectedly large. His hide was very warm, and darker than the smaller blue's, being something like an indigo or cornflower blue; however, his four limbs and the tip of his tail were dipped in bronzy-brown markings. There wasn't much time to admire the large blue, though, because he immediately creeled loudly and turned upon his small brown brother and sank his teeth into the soft brown hide.

The brown squealed in pain and rolled away, scattering droplets of ichor from near his ribs. The smaller, pale blue had been distracted by the thrusting meat pieces, but at the brown's squeal he whipped back around. His stomach growled but he marched over authoritatively. Smaller or no, this was silly!

He barked at the bigger blue while the brown picked himself up carefully. The brown only had to give the two blues a scared glance before realizing his assailant was properly distracted. Finally he would find some food-- the scents were overpowering to his small, hungry brain, and the pain of the attack further confused him. He squealed and hurried into the crowd, finding a piece of meat attached to feelings of loving comfort. He could be safe here... or at least be fed.

The big blue didn't notice the brown disappearing. He screeched at the smaller blue and bared his fangs, but the smaller blue stood his ground, chirping determinedly. The bigger blue snarled furiously. This was stupid and he was hungry! He lunged forward, looking to take a swipe out of the little blue, but the little one dodged and he overbalanced, crashing onto the table and getting tangled in his own wings.

The little blue gave a satisfactory snort and turned back to the meat. Now where was he? There, that meat was plenty tasty looking. He snapped it up in his jaws and crawled forward, searching for more.

The large blue stood his ground, or rather lay, tangled for a moment, and screeching his irritation. Those good for nothing tricksters! In just another moment he'd had them, too! Grumpily he pulled himself to his feet again, and then unexpectedly a piece of meat was thrust right under his nose. That was what he'd been looking for! The smell was that of food... He lunged forward and snatched it up, eating it quickly and barking at the person who had offered it. More!

Candidate
Z'kan hadn't come to the kitchens for firelizards. In fact, he'd slipped into the bustling array of cooks and Candidates and apprentices in hopes of snagging himself a sweetroll or two fresh out of the oven. It was pretty easy to barter or bribe yourself a treat in exchange for some pretty words, a kind smile, and a spare hand lent to fetch or carry. It was something that the greenrider had often done at his old weyr, and while he hadn't been at Vaioa long enough to know all the kitchen staff by name yet, he was working on it.

Today, however, was unusual. Today there was a large crowd around the hearth, and many of them didn't look like cooks. Puzzled but curious, he went over to investigate, and saw immediately what was happening. Baby firelizards! Baby firelizards everywhere! Oh, how charming! He grinned despite himself, and resisted the urge to edge forward to get a little closer... As much as he wanted a better look, he'd have to wait until a few people moved aside if he wanted to get any nearer. Without pushing, anyway - that would be rude.

Z'kan had always been terribly fond of firelizards. He'd secretly (or not-so-secretly) wanted one for a long time; since his accident, it seemed like having a little bonded companion might well help a great deal. But eggs weren't exactly the easiest commodity to come across. You had to be lucky enough to get one from someone who owned a gold (or recovered their green's eggs, which was a gamble). And you had to be in the right place at the right time. Looking around at how many people were already there, Z'kan was sure he was in the right place - right time, however, would remain to be seen. The eggs might already be spoken for.

If they were, however, no harm done. He would at least get to see the little darlings hatch. That was still worth a trip down to the kitchens.

Two females and a male hatched quickly, hot on the tails of their siblings. The first green immediately caught the attention of the audience. Her hide was a bright, spring green, but all over she was mottled with random patches of pale, pale green. She appeared almost sickly, and her spindly appearance didn't improve this effect.

Her sister rushed forward boldly, eager for attention and perhaps food. Too many eyes not on her! She flared her wings open and squawked. Her hide was almost as loud as her sister's, with yellow undertones lighting up the entire thing. A grassier-green ribbon led the edge of her wingsails.

Well, she was bright enough certainly, if one could look away from her sister. But the third firelizard was something of a mystery. He seemed perhaps to be a very bulky, pale, brown firelizard. He was certainly large enough to be a brown, but his color was unclear... because he was so pale, near a sandy color but with less yellow, it was hard to tell.

Biscuit's clutch certainly had yielded a number of colorful dragonets; and there were four eggs left, rocking and cracking already. Well, she wouldn't wait-- she was hungry now! The bright, yellow-toned green rushed forward, snatching at a piece of meat and gulping it down. More, more! She was hungry!

The second green surveyed her larger brother for a moment, giving a not entirely friendly look somehow archly. The bigger firelizard chittered at her shortly and widened his stance. Go get some food... And get out of my way! The green gave a definite huff. The nerve! Nevertheless she turned tail and trotted carefully into the crowd, picking up speed as the smell of food reached her brain. Well, here was something tasty! She gobbled up a morsel straight out of the fingers holding it and creeled hungrily for more.

The last firelizard surveyed the hatching eggs and had time to witness the hatching of another green before he turned back to the delicious food smells. Other ones were much less important, as long as they stayed out of his way! His hide, pale tan as it was, held a very odd sheen for a brown; it was clearly metallic from the way it reflected the light as he moved. He seemed pleasantly oblivious as he settled on the first piece of meat he came to, but the crowd finally realized it was an oddly colored, second bronze.

Tahven spent as along as he could with his candidate duties. It helped to try and keep busy. There was too much his mind could dwell on if he didn’t stick to his tasks. Still he shouldn’t be so late for dinner. The past few days he had skipped it entirely. Utter hopelessness had been creeping into his head, mining like some tunnelsnake into his gut. Now fully ingrained that depression clung to his mind and made him ache. Even his legs felt sore, and they were used to abuse. Unable to even conjure a smile he ran a filthy hand through his tangled hair. He should stop running so much.

Candidate chores weren’t enough, they didn’t take up enough of his time and he was having a difficult time sleeping. Sure the celebration feast hadn’t been wretched, that Tallyn guy had been pleasant company, but the aching head from the day after still hadn’t faded. No reason for that, but he still felt wretched. Clothes sticking to him, a smear of dirt on his cheek he walked barefoot into the dining hall. A bedraggled mess of a thing, his feet filthy from his most recent run around the weyr. Even exerting himself that way didn’t seem to get his mind off yet another failed hatching.

Looking blankly around the room he barely registered the activity surrounding the firelizard clutch. Truth be told he hadn’t really noticed the little queen with her eggs. By the time he reached the dining hall these days he was more stone than man. As he grabbed a cup of klah and a meatroll he nearly ran headfirst into the crowd. Blinking rapidly the tall candidate mumbled an incoherent apology to some small guy he’d nearly knocked over. It was enough to make him raise his gaze. And for a moment his deep eyes came alive once again. A flicker of life returned as he looked at the bustling new fire lizards. So many had hatched already!

For long moments he stood dumbstruck at the bustling activity before him. Tahven could not let hope get hold of him again, not after all those failed hatchings from before. This would not be his first firelizard clutch. Though he had never really tried to impress a little flitt before, he’d been too focused on the real prize of a dragon. A clatter woke him from his dumbstruck reverie. Warmth spread between his toes. Looking down he realized he had dropped the cup of klah. Tahven barely registered the offense, only slowly bent down to clean up the mess as best as possible.

Since he was quite late to the hatching he couldn’t really expect to impress. It would be rude to knock away everyone else. Yet, now that some were hastily moving away from the mess he’d made he could actually make out the tiny nest. More bodies moved, some glances of disgust being sent his direction. Tahven didn’t care; there had been no time to go bathe after his run. The dining hall would have been closed. At the very least he wouldn’t let himself starve. Using the space given him he looked closely at the nest, forgetting the mess he’d made and not really caring either way about how he might look right now.

Tis the season for santa dragons
Arryn leaned forward in anticipation as more of the miniature dragons hatched. The excitement level was near that of a dragon hatching as those surrounding the eggs hoped to capture the attention of one of the newly hatched flitts. She pushed pushed her hand hold the meat forward with the rest. The creatures didn't seem to waste too much time in finding something to fill their bellies, though it was difficult to tell just what influenced their choice other than their stomachs. A number of those newly hatched darted or flopped into the crowd and snatched the meat offered for them, but none grabbed for Arryn's. Her arm was beginning to ache from holding it outward. Even as people "impressed" and moved out of the circle there was always one or even two more ready to take their place. There were more empty, broken shells than not now.

Arryn switched the meat to a fresh hand, still hopefully she might attract the attention of one of few remaining flitts to hatch. Three eggs hatched in quick succession, everyone trying to catch a glimpse of the new arrivals. Arryn stretched her hand forward, dangling the meat in what she hoped was an appetizing manner. It took a hungry creel for her to realize a mottled Green had devoured the meat she had been holding. A ecstatic smile washed over her face and she felt the insistent touch of another mind, not quite as all consuming as Perdoth's, but still there. Someone was kind and smart enough to press a bowl of meat into her hands. "Alright, here you go. She held out another piece, which after a quick scolding for the delay was quickly consumed. Eager to be a bit closer to the food source the Green gave a fluttering hop and attach herself to Arryn's arm, once again issueing a few sharp trills at the delay in food. The girls laughed, shoving more meat at the Green as she stepped back from the table.

"Oh you got one!" Arryn smiled at her dragon's excitement, still feeding the small Green, who's sides were beginning to bulge. "And she is pretty. Can we call her Pretty?" "Welllll" Arryn stalled, she ahdn't given much thought to a name yet. "Please?" "Okay love, we can call her Pretty. Arryn gave in with a sigh, well the little Green was pretty so the name would fit. Pretty seemed to have had her fill, with just a few pieces left in the bowl. With a purr she snuggled up into the crook of Arryn's arm and fell asleep. How adorable was that. Arryn set the bowl on a nearby counter and began a slow and careful trek back to the Weyrlings barracks.

How far away are they?!
Bo chuckled and nodded as Visani told him her Biscuit was perfect; he knew exactly what she meant - since gaining Silence he had found a best friend like none other, his dreams had come true in fact. "You'd better take me up on it." Bo said without looking back at her, a determined look set to his young, handsome face. "Or else I'll be bothering you constantly with Fire Lizard appearances." He grinned slightly.

Grinning at the pat on the shoulder he nodded and took himself off with his newest friend. Thankfully having Silence made all of this a lot easier, the panicked feeling he had felt when Silence had chosen him didn't exist now, he knew what he needed to do this time.

"Nope." Bo said with a grin. "I'm a Candidate, I'm going to Impress when Senyrae's Bresaith has a Clutch." Obviously there was no way he could know this but the young lad had been given a confidence boost ever since he had spent some time with the Weyrling and her and Queen - both had shown him that good things came to those who waited, and Silence and Shiver were clear examples of this as well. Bo made a mental note to show the Queenrider his newest friend when he got chance - he needed to thank her again for making him feel better about everything.

Suddenly there was something on his head and chaos started. The lovely greeting from Melody was drowned out by the scream of terror from Shiver (who had been woken rather rudely from sleep at her arrival). "Hush Shiver! She's a friend!" Bo said quickly, stroking the Blue as he tried to reassure his friend. The Blue looked at Bo as though he was lying then he looked at Melody as though she was pure evil with wings. Sighing heavily Bo shoved a piece of meat in his mouth to sedate him while Silence clambered up onto his head to join the Green, humming happily at his friend. "Oh no this is Melody. She belongs to my best friend Selena. That's her over there, the pretty girl with the other woman. I'll introduce you to her later." He smiled, waving at Selena from afar, sighing in a slightly dreamy fashion. "Allowed?" Bo asked, confused at the question. "Of course you are! I know the person whose Queen Clutched this bunch, Visani will be happy that Biscuit's little babies get good owners. I'll take you to meet her once you get one."

A laugh escaped his throat and Bo handed Irgin several pieces of meat. "Told you you'd get one. Best feed him before he takes your finger instead." He winked to show he was joking. "Blue too! Just like my pair. Makes sense really, best friends should have Fire Lizards that match."
