Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Biscuit's First Clutch; 18 eggs Fresh out of the oven!

Biscuit growled quietly from her perch above the hearth she had chosen. The last few people were clearing out for the night and she was tired of waiting. Her eggs sat heavily within her belly but she refused to lay them with anything less than absolute privacy. She carried the concerns that every new mother would, but mainly she was afraid of somebody trying to take her babies from her before they hatched. So as the final few cooks and staff filtered out she settled with a sigh onto the sand that had been so graciously provided to her by Visani a week earlier when she'd noticed her queen eying up the hearth. The last person turned to get one last glimpse of her and she shrieked angrily at him. Her message was clear. Get. Out.

Not long after she sunk into the sands with a contented huff. There were eighteen of them, all perfect and safely buried in the sand that she now lounged on. She was hungry but there was no way that she would leave her babies unprotected for a moment even if nobody was around to disturb them. She watched the sky growing lighter and suddenly a blue popped from between her hiss turned to a croon. She'd gained a certain fondness for blues and their pretty colors. This one was no exception with a rich deep blue like the night sky interspersed with speckles of lighter blues and white. He hovered for a moment then dropped down on a table nearby.

Onyx had participated in the flight when she'd called for every male, to chase. He'd done well until he'd been smacked in the face by a rude bronze. But his little mind remembered Biscuit. How could he not? She was so pretty and strong and now she was here with her newly laid clutch! He trilled sweetly at her and she trilled back her request for food. He immediately perked up. This pretty queen wanted him to help her! He launched himself off the table and flitted into the kitchens, there had to be something here.

An early rising cook caught sight of him and tried to shoo him off, he stubbornly settled onto the counter and whined softly. Finally after a brief standoff between human and firelizard the man gave in and tossed him a scrap. He wiggled in happiness and flew back to where Biscuit was waiting. He carefully approached her and she gobbled up the bit. But she was still hungry. Onyx returned to the kitchen again and settled in the same place. The cook sniffed but threw him another piece which he promptly took back to the queen. After the third time the cook followed him out to where Biscuit was brooding. "Oh so that's what's going on. Good to see you finally decided to lay your clutch there my dear. She hissed at him and he left with a soft laugh only to return a few minutes later with a bowl filled with enough meat for both her and Onyx. Biscuit bumped her head against Onyx's with a soft croon of thanks and the two of them settled in for breakfast.

Biscuit's eyes traveled the walls of the dining cavern and over the faces of those near her. It was dinnertime and the area was a hub of activity. Hardly anyone bothered her these days after becoming accustomed to the queens lurking and growling at anyone who drew near. Except for Visani nobody had dared touched the sands where her eggs lay and even then after some intense bribing on her mistress' part did she finally allow the woman to carefully uncover and count each of the eighteen eggs.

But now the queen was silent in her growling and even when somebody stepped close enough to the hearth to otherwise have earned an angry shriek she did not bother to yell at them. She instead had her nose to the sands, snuffling quietly and uncovering one of the creamy shells. It was twitching and she could hear a muffled peeping from within. Biscuit crooned in encouragement and picked up a soft hum. At first it was quiet enough to go unnoticed by the other firelizards in the room but soon enough it caught one or two other flitter's attention and they passed it onto the others. Within moments the thrumming was loud enough to be heard over the babble of conversation and people were glancing towards the hearth and the irate mother who guarded it. Scraps were passing hands and people began crowding towards the otherwise jealously guarded hearth.

Biscuit threw her head back let out a happy trill when cracks began appearing on the surface of the egg she was watching. Her previous sullen protectiveness over her eggs quickly evaporating under her joy of becoming free of the almost constant activity of the dining cavern and finally getting to see her babies.

Gale was helping out in the kitchens again. One of the drudges had cut his finger and was unable to do his regular work. So, Gale was back to providing extra hands and scrubbing dishes.

The little gold that had built a nest nearby proved a momentary distraction for the young woman, but there was far too much work to be done for Gale to let herself be distracted. She ignored the little beast's presence as much as she could. But when the humming began she paused in her work and looked around at the others. What was happening? She turned away from her basin and dried her hands on her apron, watching the others as they suddenly began to scurry about. A woman close to gale fetched out a large hunk of meat and began chopping it into small pieces. Finally gathering what was happening, Gale sprang forward, grabbed some bowls, and began tossing the little chunks of meat into them, working quickly.

She craned her neck and stood on her tiptoes as she worked, trying to catch a glimpse of what was happening near the queen.

Ebyln had been one of the many crowding the dining hall just trying to get another meal down for the day when things started getting interesting. Harnteth was off sunning outside, the boys were there with their mistress eating off her plate as usual. Said woman was in a happy haze lately that left everyone in a good mood around her. Harnteth would tease that she knew why but Ebylin didn't mind really at this point. But something snapped her out of her pleasant daze, all three of her flits started humming loudly and with unanimous trills they took off toward all the commotion near one of the hearths. Ebylin had known that there was a gold nesting there but had tried to give the queen her space.

Now it seemed they eggs were ready to hatch which made her smile. It had been a while since she had been to a hatching. Maybe she should check it out...Standing up she moved toward the growing crowd and grabbed herself some scraps, just in case of course. With her three boys she didn't know if she could even handle another flit but you never knew. As she moved closer she smirked seeing the queen and the twitching eggs. There were quite a lot in the sands, which meant there could be plenty of people going home with their own firelizard soon. Rayne, the silly blue, had moved to perch nearby where the queen was and crooned at her before continuing to hum loudly to the eggs. His brothers had chosen to perch a bit further away but close enough to watch. All curious about the little eggs ready to hatch and humming in encouragement to them.

Ebylin shook her head at the lot but was also a bit excited. If she did manage to get a new firelizard then the boys would have a new sibling...oh shards what would she even name it? Now, one step at a time. No need to count your dragons before they hatch...she thought with a chuckle to herself while turning her gaze back to the nest of eggs.

Klah was always a nice thing to have, Cl'sen thought. Not as great as bubbly pies, of course, but it was nice, mellow sugary taste he had come to enjoy more here. People had begun to pool on for the evening meal, workers starting the fires and cooking the food. The weyrling gazed about, wondering if Nerilan was somewhere nearby. Despite the uneasy and awkward way they had met, he had gotten used to the woman's irritability, and had formed a steadfast friendship.

She is nice when she is not angry, Rhoth said from the weyr. He had already fed himself beforehand, and had rested out for some sunning whilst waiting for Halieth.

The bluerider hummed a random tune, swirling his cup of klah to the beat he had created. Huh, he must be really good. It sounded so in tune, and... were others joining in with him?

Excitement buzzed within the walls as people rushed over to the kitchens, murmurs bustling over the crowd. Was there something going on I wasn't told about? It is the little dragons. A queen has laid a clutch and they are now to hatch.

How hadn't he known about this, Cl'sen thought. He really needed to pay attention more when T'lsin chatted about the day and what had been going on in the weyr. The greenrider liked to gossip about stuff like this.

Curiosity got the better him and Cl'sen saw himself pushing through the growing crowd to see the queen firelizard crooning at the noticeably rocking eggs. A sudden wave of want came over the boy, saying "You should have one, too. Why not? Just grab the meat and feed it to them! Not that hard." Well, why not? I would like a little dragon to play with! Cl'sen's hand grabbed at the pieces, shoving it unceremoniously towards the nest, heedless to the fact that he might get bitten for his hastiness.

Food. Food was good. C'amryn sat at one of the benches and ate his fruit contemplatively, watching Coeus chow down on the meat roll and Calysto smashing a pie into her face. Some of the pie hit her mouth, but the rest seemed to manage to find itself in her hair and on her cheeks. But today Cam let her act out. She needed a bath anyway, and this was a fine time to do it. Still, he took his napkin and tried to wipe up the worst of the mess. Being five, Cally was just getting into that 'I don't like food so I'll do anything to make it look like I ate it' phase, and from what he'd heard, Cam got it easy. Without a mother, it was harder, too, for the little girl. But she seemed to manage just fine, especially since she had 'mothers' in the creche.

"CoCo's eating my pie." Cally wrinkled her nose.

"You gave it to him." Cam said easily, and at that moment, the little gold who'd been brooding for a long while it seemed trilled out a happy song. Coeus pricked and began a little strangled hum, but did nothing but sit there.

"Hatching?" Cally asked, picking apart her pie and putting the small pieces in her mouth one at a time. Cam pulled another piece out of her hair.

"Maybe." He said, but didn't move quite yet.

His ears prickled, the sound of the tiny flitter humming causing an almost ticklish sensation as Rujin popped his head into the dining hall. Oh, well, there was a cause for excitement! He'd been ambling, bored, but a solution to his woes had just arrived, beautifully packaged. If he could manage to pawn one of the babies off of it's mother, he'd have a delightful little companion.

Thoughts of teaching a firelizard how to sing in accompaniment with his gitar immediately flooded his imagination, and Rujin insinuated himself into the hustle and bustle of firelizard-hopefuls, neatly filching some scraps from someone's nearby bowl without even a pinch of guilt. They should have been paying better attention.

They were hit by a smooth criminal.

He squeezed between some shorter males, wriggling himself further towards the front. Rujin was able to catch a glimpse of the mother gold, and he took a few moments to appraise her, as if scrutinizing her genetics. How much would the flittlings take after their father?

Atlen

Atlen chugged her klah. She actually wanted to be awake tonight rather than behave like an undead zombie. Oceth had fallen asleep earlier than usual which had left her a little more time this evening to get things done, like writing to her parents. They'd finally sent her a message but she'd had other things to worry about than them trying to tell her how to raise her queen.

She'd stopped in the lower caverns to grab a couple rolls but had gotten distracted by her third mug of klah and had been there longer than she had anticipated. She'd paid the brooding mother on the hearth little mind since she'd set up her nest, she had plenty to do than be interested in another firelizard. But still, it would be nice to have another one about she mused. Leno was wonderful but generally he was useless unless he really actually wanted to please his mistress or suck up for having done something regrettable. The blue was back with Oceth, watching over the little queen while she slept and guarding her from faranth knew what might try and bother her.

She looked up when she finally noticed the shift in mood, her eyes trained in the direction of the hearth. It was hard to not notice the intensifying humming of the firelizards that now flocking around the room. At this point Atlen had two choices, either watch as people impressed to baby flitters, or participate and perhaps manage to get one for herself. She smirked and set down her mug. She could use another flitt and Oceth was sure to dote on the little creature the same way she doted on Leno.

She glanced about and snatched a bowl away from the hand of another who wasn't paying attention. They didn't need it really. She hurried towards the crowd and squeezed her way between people until she could finally reach the hearth. She was in time to see the queen lash out and nip the fingers of some boy who had gotten too hasty and reached his hand closer than she liked. Atlen chuckled but kept her hands to herself, if she saw the opportunity then she'd take it but she wouldn't be as foolish as that.

Olayla

Jasper let out a happy trill and all but pulled Olayla by her shirt towards the hearth. There were babies! He liked babies! All of his were grown up and he didn't have any new ones to look after now. Even Eyoith was all grown up. "Hey stoppit Jas!" she grabbed a hold of him and he stopped but his humming was interspersed with quiet whines. "Ok ok. I get it. Comeon, maybe it is time to add another member to our little family eh?" She trudged between the tables, scooping a handful of scraps out of a large bowl and carefully sliding her way through the crowd so that she could see the hearth and the nest in the gap between two people. She noted again how pretty the mother was with her lovely variations between her colors, surely these babies would be wonderfully marked like she was.

Two eggs immediately split open as the humming of the gathered firelizards grew to a crescendo. A strong anf sturdy little green picked herself up out of half her remaining eggshells; her hide was a bold and saturated forest green, very pretty and eye catching, and as she stepped onto the table and creeled hungrily, shaking off the last bits of egg, pale green stripes became visible to the gathered crowd. Her hind legs were this same color.

The brown rolled for a moment from the force of his hatching, before coming to a stop and gingerly picking himself back up. He was more boldly marked, with dark pinions, paws, and nosetip, and light underbelly all the way down to his tail. He shrieked in surprise and hunger, and sent a matching wave of emotions to those closest. He was hungry! He caught sight of his green sister and immediately chittered angrily at her. He was going to get the food, HE was hungrier!

The green instantly tucked her tail between her legs and darted into the crowd, vanishing. Though most eyes were still on the brown as he latched onto a nearby piece of meat, the green was suddenly accosted by a piece of meat herself, in the midst of the crowd, and she accepted it greedily.

Gale squeaked with surprise as the little brown suddenly attacked the piece of meat she was holding on its way to the bowl. She snatched her hand back, allowing the brown to scarf the meat down, and looks around at those around her. Someone nudged her.

"Feed it, girl! Feed it!"

"Oh!" Gale scrambled for more meat and started popping the little morsels into the browns mouth as fast as she could. The bowl she was using had been far from full when she started and she soon emptied it. She grabbed up another and held it close to her chest, a piece of meat poised in her fingers.

The brown, displeased by this added distance between him and his food, darted up to cling to her arm and shoulder. His claws pierced through her shirt and scratched into her skin, drawing a sharp gasp from her. He shrieked at her when she hesitated with the meat and she hastily shoved it into his mouth.

As Gale continued to feed the little lizard, she felt his mind touch hers and she let out a gasp of awe. It was an amazing sensation. She cooed to the little creature as she fed him, overcome with affection. Before long, his eyes settled to a content blue and he leaned against her, crooning. She smiled foolishly and set the bowl down so that she could pick the little brown off her arm and cradle him to her chest. She rubbed him behind the headknobs with one finger, drawing a pleased croon from him.

"Aww, you like that don't you?," she cooed to him. "Ohh, yes. You can have all the attention you want my little Sisco."
