Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Irgin beamed and puffed up his chest as N'ril said he'd be popular. "I'm going to try to be the best baker ever!" He asserted, bobbing on his feet a little. His parents wanted him to do well, so he'd be the best. He was sure that with just a lot of effort, he could manage it. Irgin peered around thoughtfully, his eyes growing wide. "I can't keep up with all of that!" Irgin said astounded at the notion of being in charge of everything. "Well, not yet anyway. Just one thing at a time for me." He said, cheerfulness returning almost instantly.

N'ril was possibly the nicest Dragonrider Irgin had ever met! He made him feel so confident, like he could march in there and bake more bread than anyone in the Weyr had ever seen! Instead of that though, he stayed close to the rider, enjoying talking to him. "I just want to be useful. Like you are, all the riders do such an important job."

Watching N'ril sigh, he frowned, watching him closely. "You're sad a lot now?" He asked, slightly confused. "You make sure everyone is safe though. When you come back, we all know we're safe. That's a good thing." Irgin insisted, hoping that if he explained it enough, it would help convince N'ril to be happier.

Peering around the kitchen, Irgin was struck by an idea. "Come with me." He said, clasping the rider's hand and dragging him forwards. "Something yummy will cheer you up." He said firmly, dragging him towards the cook making the tarts. "If I help you to make extras, can I have one of those? There's a rider in distress.....well, sort of, behind me." He said, peering hopefully at the tarts and waving his hand over his shoulder at N'ril. Irgin then looked imploringly up at the round faced woman up to her elbows in flour and tart bases.

N'ril's eyebrows shot up as the boy dragged him into the kitchens. He was strong for such a scrawny little thing! After a few moments N'ril followed willingly, hoping he wouldn't get in the way. He couldn't help smiling as he let Irgin lead him through the bustle. This kid is so sweet. He's great. I hope he never changes.

That's nice.

Unperturbed by his dragon's disinterest, he refocused his attention just in time to hear Irgin's last words. He chuckled a little and tousled the boy's hair fondly.

"I'm alright," he told the woman. "You don't have to."

Her eyebrows rose and her mouth formed a dramatic O shape. "Oh, no, I think the lad is right!" She paused to give Irgin a wink and a smile. "You look just awful N'ril. Really, it's a good thing you ran into this boy. Here, lad. Pick out a tart for him." She gestured to a nearby tray of shiny, delicious-looking tarts. "Careful, though. They're still hot."

Irgin grinned as N'ril tried to deny that he needed anything. Clearly, the man didn't understand just how wonderful a good snack could be. He would have to change this! Here he'd thought Riders knew just about everything too!

Irgin laughed as the cook agreed that N'ril really was in dire need of good food. Perhaps some people here understood then. "See? I told you." He said sagely, peering up at N'ril. Having been given permission to pick out a tart, Irgin stood on tiptoe and looked them over. "These smell better than the ones we used to make. We didn't get good fruit." He commented in awe, his eyes wise as saucers.

Finally, he picked out a tart and carefully handed it to N'ril. "It's hot though." He reminded him, in case he had forgotten. If he hadn't known about the effects of good food, he might be the sort to burn himself. Irgin wasn't about to let that happen. Him, getting a rider burnt! Not if he could help it.

"What do you think? Feel better?" He asked, looking at N'ril and wondering what he'd make of the tart. "I'm supposed to start work here today." He added to the cook as N'ril ate. "I'm going to work very hard." He assured her, then peered back at N'ril, almost bouncing with anticipation to see what his reaction would be.

N'ril took the tart from Irgin carefully and gently blew on it to show he'd heard the boy's warnings. After a few minutes, and more excited urging from Irgin, N'ril took a big bite out of the tart, nearly severing it in half. The treat had been perfectly baked and his eyes rolled up in his head as the warm filling oozed across his tongue. The dough held the perfect balance of doughiness and crispiness. He smiled down at Irgin as he chewed, his eyes wide with appreciation. The round-faced woman chuckled warmly as she kneaded her dough.

"Looks like he likes it!"

N'ril nodded and swallowed enough to speak. "Mm, yes! It's delicious! You were right, Irgin. This is just what I needed. Thank you." He smiled warmly at the lad and then patted him fondly on the back before polishing off the last of the tart.

The baker smiled and began rolling out her dough. "I think you'll fit in nicely here, dear," she told Irgin. "You know the value of good food, and what it can bring to people. That's just the sort of spirit we like to hold to around here. You can help me for the rest of the day. I'll teach you all you need to know about Vaioa's kitchens and in return you can lend me your strong back and clever fingers! Hee hee hee!"

N'ril licked his fingers as he watched the old woman get Irgin settled. There was something heartwarming about a new young person finding their place in the Weyr. He felt much better. When he was able to get a word in edge wise, he leaned down to Irgin's level and said, "Well, it look like you're in good hands now. I'd better be going. It was nice meeting you Irgin. I'll see you around."

He gave the boy one last pat and then headed out toward the weyrbowl.

(woo! that's that. :3 I think it would be fun to do another post with them some time. N'ril would love to father the kid a bit. just hit me up with a PM if you're game.)
