Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

There was a pile of furs, curled up in a chair in the common area and....not much else going on. It was well after lights out after all, why would anyone else be up? The furs shifted slightly as Tiael pulled the warming mug of klah to her lips. How the mug had been obtained? Well that was probably best not asked, so there she was drinking the warm liquid, in the small light of a glow basket nearby. It was needed, sharding deserts were cold at night.

So why was she up? Well Tiael was a bit miffed about that one too. Normally she slept well, but for the past few nights she'd found herself up at all hours. Maybe it was the knowledge that there'd be eggs again soon, or the restless feeling that hit her when she'd been in one place too long. Maybe she should find Ebylin again soon, ask if they could head out of the Weyr for a bit. Or she needed to find herself something else to keep her busy.

Lessons were fine, chores were ok; but she knew that if she continued to spend half the night up she'd begin to fall behind in both. For now though, rather than brooding fitfully in her room by herself Tiael had decided to get up. She'd attempted reading a few hides on their lessons but soon got bored, so she'd managed to wind up with a drink of klah, a blanket and now sat curled up in a chair in the common room. Her eyes were peering at a small gemstone placed carefully on top of the blanket in her lap, a sigh of irritation escaping her lips after a few moments.

It had been a rather bad idea to try sneaking around in the middle of the night. Especially after lights out. But Zelle just couldn't sleep. She couldn't stop thinking about her father, the ship, and the sea. She missed it. Though lately she had finally started getting out of her grumpy funk and being more herself again. Which was good for everyone in her opinion. Cause she hated herself like that. At the moment she was trying her hardest not to get spotted by anyone. Having somehow, someway managed to get to the kitchens and snatch up some bread. Oh she knew about the food shortage and all that, but this was bread they were going to throw out anyway. And she felt snackish.

Zelle found that when when you're trying to be stealthy, anything and everything became a possible way to get yourself noticed. Breathing to loud, sneezing, walking to loud, even your shadow was a threat. Thankfully, VERY thankfully, she didn't get caught but she nearly was. By a hair she was able to get to the candidate barracks with out anyone seeing her. The thrill of it made her feel great after keeping herself cooped up in her room all the time when she wasn't doing chores or lessons. Grinning like a fool she walked along quite happy with herself. Getting to her room she grabbed her lesson hides and headed for the common room.

She snuck her way to the room since she still wasn't supposed to be up this late after all. Getting inside she almost didn't notice the lump of furs sitting in the chair. Her eyes glanced over them but it didn't click there was someone in them until she got closer that is. "Ssshar-" Zelle bit her tongue to keep from finishing her startled words. Wait...this looked like one of the candidates. Well duh...who else would be in the candidate common room? The weyrleader? Letting out a breath she looked at the girl wrapped in furs and smirked. She was cute...and what was that shiny thing she was looking at? "Well...I wasn't expecting anyone to be here. Guess I wasn't the only one that couldn't sleep."

Tiael was staring rather fixatedly at the stone, mind turning over a few rather melancholy thoughts. What if she didn't Impress again? Would they just let her keep staying here until she did? Or until she got too old? What if they didn't? Would they let her work instead?...It was all a bit morose really and caused her to heave another sigh. The door to the barracks opened and a figure slipped inside, then straight past her and down towards the girls dorms. Curious but, not enough to make her go poking her nose into private business. What they got up to in their own rooms.... she went back to looking at the stone.

A moment later, a hissing sound caused her to start. Automatically she snatched up the stone in her lap, pulling it beneath the furs quickly. Peering through the gloom she spotted another Candidate and sagged back in her chair with relief. Not the Candidatemaster, or a rider, just someone who would get into as much trouble as she would if they said anything.

Hearing her comment, Tiael chuckled quietly and nodded. She pulled her mug to her lips, returning the smirk. "I see I wasn't the only one with the urge for a late night snack." She commented with amusement, noting the bread and scrolls in her hand. Grinning she glanced about, in the low-light, she gestured to the chairs nearby. "Seeing as neither of us is about to get any sleep, you may as well have a seat. You're Zelle, right? I've seen you in lessons." Tiael explained, careful to keep her voice at barely a murmur. "You can't sleep either then?" She asked, leaving the question hanging and clearly begging for more explanation than a simple yes. Until now, she'd never found anyone else up when she was. With the new Candidates it seemed, had come yet more interesting people. Tiael set out to do then, what any self-respecting and self-preserving young woman would do....learn about them.

When Tiael mentioned late night snack she looked at her hand holding the bread and chuckled before looking to one of the closest chairs nearby. At the words that she should take a seat she just nodded and sat down in a chair across from the girl. Might as well. No need to go sitting halfway across the room, not when she could have some company. Hearing that Tiael recognized her she nodded again and leaned forward with a small smile. "Yep. That's me. The ridiculously tall one. Or so people keep telling me. You're...Tiael if I recall. I've heard about you." Indeed she had. Most that she had heard of the girl was that she was a troublemaker. But then again Zelle had a habit of being just that too. So this could get interesting.

Tiael's question about her not being able to sleep made her look at the girl curiously. She could tell from her tone that she wanted more than a simple 'yes' and it intrigued her. Slowly smirking she tilted her head just slightly before responding. "Yeah, just can't sleep. Too much on my mind. Feeling a bit...homesick you could say? Then again my home was a ship on the sea. Didn't really have a real home," Zelle said with a chuckle and tried to keep her voice low. Last thing they needed was for the candidate master to come looking because she heard their talking. "What about you? What's a cute thing like you doing up so late?"

Her tone was genuinely curious but the flirtatious underlying tone made it clear she was interested in the girl. Zelle wanted to see how she would react too. Lately she had done some button pushing like she was used to doing. It was amusing to see people get so flustered by her actions or words. That was making this place more and more bearable to live with such fun people to mess with. Though she had to admit that she still felt lonely most of the time.

Tiael watched the other girl sit, gaze flicking over her from head to toe. When she spoke, the comment was met with a raised eyebrow. "Rediculous?....not always. Height can have its advantages". Instead of commenting though, she allowed the other girl to guess her name and nodded. "That's me." She said shortly, settling against the back of the chair for a moment, slight smirk on her lips still. "What exactly have you heard?" She asked, curiosity getting the better of her a little.

Listening quietly, Tiael had to hand it to the girl, she took prompts well. Both in the fact that she actually followed them, and that she even obliged to share a little more than most people she met. A ship aye? Well now, this was a new one. Tiael had dabbled with the idea of taking off on a ship, but most just seemed to fish and then head back in to port, plus opportunities for amassing objects didn't seem very high. Still.... "That must have been interesting, certainly more than a lot of the others anyway." She commented, glancing about the room before she flicked her gaze back to Zelle, debating. "Home's, aren't always a necessity. Some of us manage just fine without." Tiael commented, then grinned and pointed to herself. "Trader, well, mostly. Never had a fixed home, never needed one." The mug was pulled to her lips, watching Zelle over the top as she asked exactly what had Tiael up so late as well.

Thoughtfully she licked her lips, running a finger round the rim of her cup as she settled it in her lap. "Similar to you I suppose. Can't settle." Sitting up a little more in her chair, she tilted her head to one side. The tone hadn't been missed, though Tiael wasn't going to bite just yet to that. "Do you think you'll be ok? staying in just one place I mean..." She began, biting her lip for a moment before she grinned. "Would be a shame to uh, have one less face about the barracks if you can't hack it. Especially when it's such a pretty one too." She said, the grin from her lips reaching her eyes. Alright, so she couldn't actually leave the comment hanging wide open but then if she had, who on Pern would she be? Not Tiael that was for sure, so she watched the girl expectantly. Just how far exactly, did this one intend to play? She wasn't shy, or conflicted it seemed, a better start than most. Still, Tiael couldn't help but wonder if she was going to talk big and then run scared. Had to push some buttons to find that out and Tiael was all kinds of good at button pushing.

Zelle kept smirking as she noticed Tiael looking her over and then chuckled at her words. "Yes it does have its advantages. Like being able to see over everyone's heads and reaching high places," She said as if repeating the same thing she always said to people when they told her being tall wasn't all that bad. And it wasn't. If face Zelle enjoyed being so tall. It really did give her quite an advantage sometimes. Grinning when Tiael asked what she had heard she waved her hand in the air slightly. "Oh mostly that you're a nosey troublemaker with tendency to be rather blunt."

She smirked as she brought her bread to her lips to start taking small bites from it while watching Tiael. She couldn't see much of her while she was wrapped in her furs but Zelle had a feeling she had a cute body to go with her cute face. Yes, she was thinking of such things. It had been while after all. When she called her being on a ship interesting she let out a small laugh. "It was more than interesting to me. Going around Pern to see all the different Holds and such. It was a great life to me," And she missed it terribly. Though she was getting a little more comfortable at the Weyr she would always miss her home on the sea. "True, home isn't a necessity. Hence why I'm not troubled about never having one. The ship and the sea was all I needed."

When Tiael said she was used to be a Trader she smiled slightly and raised a brow in interest. Traders were some of her favorite people. When they would be at port she liked to talk to them about things they have seen or what they would be selling. They would sometimes even ride on the ship to get somewhere. So she wasn't the only one that was more used to traveling than sitting still. That was nice to hear.

Zelle found herself watching Tiael rather closely as she licked her lips before finally answering her question. Seemed they both couldn't get settled that night. Understandable if she was more used to moving around than being in one place. She chuckled when she was asked if she would be ok staying in one place. "So far I've been ok. Restless, sleepless, and mostly bored out of my mind but ok. I just might make it," She felt her left eye twitch ever so slightly hearing Tiael say 'if you can't hack it'. It wasn't an insult but deep inside it felt like a challenge. And Zelle never backed down from a challenge. But then she was slightly distracted from that when she heard Tiael call her pretty. A slow playful smirk spread on her face as she looked at the girl. "Don't worry. I won't deprive you of my pretty face any time soon. So long as you can keep your cute one around as well."

She added a quick wink with her words before going back to nibbling on her bread and watching Tiael with a devilish smirk and a curious spark in her eyes. Zelle was starting to think she just might have found someone VERY interesting to be around. And that always made for a happy Zelle.

Tiael listened as Zelle listed out positives to being tall, deciding to leave the subject. Her comment was familiar it seemed, so she merely left it at that and instead listened to what the Candidate had heard about her. She debated looking shocked, but instead settled for shrugging. Zelle wouldn't have believed her if she was any guess anyway. "I can live with that. I've not caused any scandal or been balled out though so, I can't be doing too badly."

Listening quietly she chuckled, nodding as Zelle's words sounded oddly familiar. She missed travel, it was a freedom she didn't realise she needed so much. Not till she'd been tied to one place anyway. At the girls' comment over home, Tiael nodded. "Can relate to that one." She commented. Sharing a little about her past shortly afterwards.

It seemed Zelle shared some of her problems in regards to settling. "You get used to it.......sort of." Tiael said, aware she couldn't promise it would all be fine. After all, here she was complaining about being restless herself. The twitch wasn't missed, but far from exploding, Zelle seemed to simply rise to the challenge of her comment and returned her playful tones with yet another comment. Innnteresting.

Watching the girl nibble on the bread, Tiael smirked and sipped her klah again. "I think I can do that." She said in amusement, placing the now empty mug on the floor by her chair. Unfolding the blanket a little, the stone from earlier was now safely tucked away in her pocket. Stretching, she inhaled deeply and then leaned forward in the chair. "Living on a ship must be pretty fun." She said, if the girl's earlier words were anything to go by. "You must have some interesting stories...care to share any?" She asked, glancing about for a moment and then shifting herself onto the floor, dragging the fur pile with her and patting the floor next to her. "Best not to wake the others up, you'll have to entertain everyone with stories."

Now that was interesting. Tiael seemed to just accept what Zelle had heard about her and just shrugged it off. Her words made her chuckle and realize that they had a bit in common already. "True. Must be pretty good if you've managed to keep your head out of trouble so far," She just nodded to the girl when she said she could relate to what she mentioned and then smirked when Tiael said that she would get used to it, sort of. Yes, it was hard to get used to staying in one spot when you were used to traveling all over Pern. Seeing new things and meeting new people. It was so much better than sitting in place and waiting...waiting for something to happen that there wasn't even a guarantee would bring any reward for such a long wait. "Maybe, maybe not. We'll see."

Zelle still didn't think she was meant to be there. Even if the searchrider had said she would make a good candidate she didn't really believe it. As much confidence she had in herself it just didn't seem like life in a Weyr was meant for her. Not when she longed to be out at sea again. If, and that was a big if, she did managed to go on those sands and Impress her life would change. She knew that much from observing things at her new home. Zelle wasn't sure if she wanted it to change though...as exciting as it might be and thrilling too.

Forcing herself from her melancholy thoughts she returned to watching Tiael carefully and smiled hearing her response to her comment. "Then its a deal. I'll stick around if you can. I'm sure we'll be in this place for a while that way," She teased playfully before watching the girl unfold the furs and stretch. Oh my. She really was a cutie. Not...super attractive or anything but just enough to catch Zelle's attention right away. Now now Zelle, down girl. Play first, then pounce. Gotta test the waters after all. As Tiael leaned forward in the chair she smirked and nodded at her comment about living on a ship. Chuckling as she mentioned having stories to tell. "Life was fun. And sometimes exciting. I don't really know if I have any stories you'd be interested in."

She watched as Tiael looked around and then moved to the floor with her furs before patting the spot next to her. At her words about having to tell more people her stories she let out a quiet laugh. "Like I said. I don't think my 'stories' would be that fascinating. But alright," Zelle moved from her chair and sat down next to Tiael and smirked seeing how she could slightly look down at Tiael even when sitting. She knew there was a reason she liked being taller than most girls. There was something satisfying and...empowering of being able to look down at some pretty thing next to you. "What exactly would you like to hear about? Where I've been? What I've seen? Or maybe you'd like to hear about the time I went swimming naked with some shipfish." She added the last part in a playful tone to see how she would react. Zelle was starting to like this girl. She certainly was interesting enough.

Tiael debated arguing against the accusations, though realised any further comment like that would just give Zelle reason to doubt her. So, she merely shrugged. "People talk and believe a lot of things, doesn't really matter what you do; they'll believe them anyway." She smiled though, she wasn't angry about it. So, she was earning herself a reputation? Interesting. It wasn't all that bad either, if she could keep blunt and a slight troublemaker to just about it; she should be fine here.

Tiael could understand Zelle's indifference towards settling in, she'd been the same. Then she'd been kept busy enough to not realise just how long she'd been in one place. Of course, when the notion had hit her, she'd jumped at the chance to get out of the Weyr, even for a while. Maybe she'd have to bring Zelle along the next time she went out flying with Ebylin. Maybe.

Grinning as Zelle agreed to the deal, she nodded. "I haven't gone anywhere so far, and I've already been to one hatching. They're kind of a doozy when they get going." She commented thoughtfully, then shrugged. Now, if Tiael hadn't noticed Zell watching her, she'd have been blind however it was still nice to know she could, get people's interest. Zelle also, was someone who didn't mind showing she was interested, apparently. Oh, oh, conundrums. To be good, curl up and go back to bed or...not....

Well, the worst thing that happened is that she furthered her reputation a little, even if only in terms of being a flirt and more. That was also ok, people rarely understood her points of view anyway. Zelle seemed reluctant to share stories, but still moved onto the floor next to her. Well that hadn't taken a ton of convincing now had it?

Smiling cheerfully, she listened to the offer of stories and burst out laughing at the final option. She shoved her hand over her mouth and scrunched down in the furs till she could be quieter. "Sorry." She whispered quietly after a moment, then leaned back a little and watched Zelle. "Most folk that come in are all.....uptight." She explained, then looked up thoughtfully. "I guess, I'd like to find out where you've been and what sorts of things you've found that you liked........as for you and shipfish, maybe we can visit that one in a little bit." She commented with a smirk, looking her over again. While it was so very tempting to just, dive on in with the last story...no pun intended, she also wanted to find out a little more about the other traveller.

Zelle chuckled under her breath at Tiael's response to her words and smirked slightly. "Very true. And only fools blindly believe everything they hear without knowing the truth." She said in a matter-of-fact tone with a tinge of amusement. Tiael wasn't going to confirm or deny what Zelle had heard huh? Smart move. Not everyone knew to avoid that trick. Instead choosing to get defensive and either making themselves looking like idiots or proving all that was said while denying it. It was actually amusing to watch sometimes and fun if done the right way.

She wondered for a moment how Tiael dealt with being stuck in the Weyr when she was used to traveling. Did she do like Zelle did and throw herself into chores and lessons? Or did she have some secret to keeping herself from going stir crazy with cabin fever? It was something to find out at some point but for now Zelle would focus on getting to know her a little more. See what made her tick an all that jazz.

"You've been to a hatching?" That got her attention. Hatchings were a mystery to her beyond what she heard from other people. And sometimes what she would hear just made her roll her eyes. "Doozies huh? I'll have to be prepared them. Guess that's what lessons are supposed to be for though," Zelle said with a smirk just as Tiael had started moving the furs and caused Zelle to get distracted. She was well aware that she was being obvious with her interest but that never mattered to her. When she had moved to sit next to Tiael she realized she could have SUCH fun being this close. But she reminded herself not to do anything fresh, yet. At least not until she knew what her limits were. THEN she could see if she could push them.

A devilish smile spread on Zelle's face when Tiael burst out laughing at her last suggestion. Oh yes, she was going to like this girl just fine. Normally saying something like that would have gotten her looks of disgust or even slapped. So this was a welcome change. "Hey, no worries. I totally understand the uptight business. Some of these people need to loosen up I think," She said in a low whisper as she smirked at the girl. Tiael had a nice laugh and Zelle always liked people with a sense of humor. It made life so much easier. Listening to Tiael tell her what she'd like to hear she chuckled at her comment about her and the shipfish. Winking at her she gave her a playful smirk before responding. "I can do that. As for where I've been...does 'everywhere' count for an answer?"

She said the words in a lighthearted tone but there was an underlying seriousness to her words. "Aside from the more southern seas I think I've been to almost every place with access to a port. Not all those places were friendly of course but business was business," Zelle glanced at Tiael then looked forward as she remembered her time on the ship. A majority of her memories were good ones which easily let her push away the bad. "One of the things I miss the most was going to the different ports and spending time in Holds. You'd be surprised what different sorts of food people make depending on where they live."

Tilting her head she suddenly smiled and turned to Tiael feeling a little more enthusiastic while talking about sea life. "Have you ever been to places that actually eat tunnelsnakes? That was a new one on me. Oh, and I love places with lots of green...EVERYWHERE. Really beautiful places. So the desert felt a bit like a disappointment at first. But it has its own kind of beauty I guess." Ok, maybe she should slow down. She didn't need to start rambling. That was a weakness of hers, when someone asked her about her life on the ship or things she had seen she just couldn't stop talking.

((OMG Zelle stop talking! @-@))
