Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

She couldn’t even quite recall how long she’d been here. Regardless, she still didn’t have the nerve to approach anyone. She’d spoken to Dart that one time, he’d seemed like a very ambitious young boy. She wasn’t sure that she was quite on the same page as him, but when was she ever on the same page as another? Volcom was curled up in her lap as she sat there on the floor of the barracks, her back leaning up against the side of her cot. The floor was cool underneath her, but the girl that was usually sensitive to temperature felt warm with all of the stress-inducing thoughts running through her mind. There was a hatching that had been set to come up, and she hadn’t shown up. All she could think about was what had happened last-time, and she just... hadn’t gone. Was that wrong of her? Was she going to get in-trouble for it? What if one of those dragonets had been waiting on her and now because of her one had gone /between/ forever? Stop, you’re going to make yourself sick. She was rather good at sickening herself.

Volcom sensed her discontent and awoke, looking upon her with adoration. He shuffled closer, if possible, his body tight up against her stomach. She smiled down at him, trying to be brave for her little flitt at least. She needed to be brave, because she was afraid. She didn’t want to disappoint anyone, namely the candidate master. She hadn’t seen Cayden lately; she knew that it was best to just let her and her gray focus on the duties they were bound to. Raising a young dragonet must have taken up all of one’s time; she couldn’t see how one would have time for anything else! I won’t be a distraction, she thought assuredly. It’s not like Cayden would miss her, she rarely ever said anything of much interest.

The blue chirruped, raising his head once more to tilt it to the side questioningly. He wasn’t sure what was making His sad, but she was indeed sad. Sad was no good, he’d have to fix it somehow. Perhaps another like her could fix it. Yes, this was logical. He shot up, beating his wings as hard as he was able. He grabbed a hold of her sleeve in his claws, and tugged. ”What is it?” she asked in alarm. ”What’s wrong?” Her voice was loud enough to be heard in the hall, the alarm hard to miss.

Tiael was sitting in the common room, holding up a small green stone. It wasn't opaque, the light passed through too easily. She was admiring the way the light hit it and refracted, bouncing off what seemed like lines in the middle. It was pretty. She was also developing a new found respect for mining. It seemed, they came up with some very interesting finds indeed.

Tossing the gem lightly into the air, she caught it and smiled to herself. It had been hard not to spend the morning looking at it instead of working, it was so very pretty. But, she'd had chores and she really was trying this time around to settle down and work. So, her downtime had been spend studying her new 'find' and admiring it accordingly. It would go with her very meager collection well.

Opening her hand, she was going to lift it up to the light again when she heard a raised voice. Sitting up in her chair slightly she paused. It sounded too panicked to be just people messing about and as she tilted her head, the voice came again in the same alarmed tone. She'd thought the barracks were empty, but apparently not.

Curiosity was not something she could easily ignore, so she hopped up and strode along the hall to where the noise was coming from. "Is everything alright?" She called ahead, locating the room where the commotion was. Not being one for formalities, she pushed the door open and peered inside. For a moment, her breath caught in her throat at the way the girl was slumped against her cot. That wasn't right, but then she realised it had been her that had been yelling and Tiael felt the small knot in her stomach ease. "Sorry, I heard yelling.....everything ok?" She asked, feeling a little foolish as she also spotted a blue firelizard flapping and trying to pull the girls sleeve off. It was probably just him being lively, still she leaned against the door frame and waited, gaze flicking quietly over the girl and offering her a small smile of greeting.

If it were Zane, thinking something may have been wrong, she would’ve cowered behind the person’s door and spent an eternity trying to build up the courage to speak-out. This girl, however, called out to her asking if everything was alright, and then came right on in. If only Zane could be as bold, her life would’ve taken a turn for the better ages ago. At first she didn’t respond, just peering at the entranceway with wide eyes. Was she really that concerned? she wondered, questioning the girls motives regardless of the fact that she had zero reason to. Not yet, anyways. Volcom stopped tugging hyperactively at His’ sleeve, instead zooming across the room to hover before the new girl in question. He chirruped a friendly greeting, though kept his distance. He was a wary one, though once he got to really know a person he warmed up relatively quick.

The question of her-Zane-being alright, was raised once more. ”I was just... I was-,” she attempted to speak, a blush coloring her face. She could feel her skin becoming hot to the touch. ”Sorry... Just my flitt, he’s trying to, um...” she trailed off, not sure how to explain herself. The truth of it was that he had been trying to get her to go out and socialize, but turned out that the opportunity had come to her instead. ”I really am sorry,” was all she offered, her perceptiveness picking up on her fellow candidate’s offered smile. She attempted at a small smile in return, hoping it didn’t look forced. She really was sincere.

Zane reached a hand up to brush away a few stray locks of hair that had been curtaining her face. She disliked her long hair sometimes because it was a lot to wash, and it got in the way. It was thick too, which didn’t help matters. The blue flitt held his position, as curious as ever. Sometimes he got to be a bit too nosey but Zane felt bad scolding him. She wasn’t brave enough even for that. Everyone and everything ruled over her. What a pathetic dragonrider you’d make, she criticized herself. She truly was embarrassed that she hadn’t shown up at the hatching. What a thing to do. Her smile turned to a frown. Unfortunately she was an open-book, as much as she disliked being one. She’d give anything to be able to keep a straight face, but no, she had to have her emotions written all over her. Even her body language failed her. She drew her legs up into her chest, arms wrapped around them tightly. This was the part where she was supposed to ask for the girl’s name, or what she was doing here at Vaioa. It was only polite, and a part of her wasn’t sure whether or not she wanted the girl to leave.

”So you’re a candidate... also?” she inquired. Small steps, small steps.

Tiael blinked in surprise as the blue flitter zoomed up and peered at her, his curious chirp was greeted with a grin. She held out her hand towards him but didn't attempt to stroke him, he was cute and Tiael was struck with the notion that one of these little creatures might be very handy indeed. Perhaps she could even look into getting one for herself, now that she was back to being just a Candidate again. For now though, there were other matters to attend to. Other, very shy matters it seemed.

As the girl stuttered and tried to speak, Tiael flicked her gaze downward to her, head tilting to one side. There wasn't any scorn in her expression, merely puzzlement. Shyness was not something she was familiar with, nor something she'd ever felt herself. She'd felt fear, but only when it was her life or limb on the line. People, now they were easy to deal with. Even fun on occasion. It became very apparent that socializing was not this girls strong point. A pity, for even as she pushed locks of hair from her face it was clear that she was pretty.

As her smile was returned, Tiael flicked her gaze to the blue, nodded to him politely and then crouched on the floor so she could get a better look at the ball of candidate in front of her. She really was a ball now, all wrapped up in her own limbs. "Nothing to apologize for." She said gently, chuckling softly. Normally she hadn't the time for shy people, but Tiael was now feeling a little bit adrift and was not about to turn away from an opportunity to get to know someone. It just, was going to take some time it seemed. "You look like I'm going to bite you. I can promise I don't do that unless you ask nicely." She said with a mischievous grin.

There was a definite pause, the girl seemed to be scrambling for words. Finally she asked a question, one that Tiael was rather hoping would be avoided. It was obvious she was a Candidate, still, a fact that she'd rather was not rubbed in. Her lips thinned for a moment, her jaw a little tense as she fought to keep herself calm. The girl was more scared than a wherry being dragonhunted. Finally, she exhaled deeply and lifted one corner of her mouth in a half smile. "Yup, I am. Still. I didn't have much luck this time around." She explained briefly, then shrugged. "Maybe next time....I'm Tiael by the way, and you are?" She asked, extending her hand to shake the other girls. "Are you new? I, don't remember seeing you on the sands." It was clear conversation was going to be like pulling teeth, but it seemed to become more of a challenge than a deterrence for Tiael.

Volcom liked this one, she seemed... more so intelligent than the other specimen’s he’d encountered. He would continue to study her to see whether or not he approved of her being around his Zane. He took the grin on her face as a friendly means, for Zane bore such an expression sometimes when looking upon him. As for her outstretched hand, he daintily touched his maw to it before making a u-turn to land on His’ shoe. He chirruped, and yet was looking at Tiael again. Inviting her over-perhaps? He more than knew that Zane liked her space, but he wanted to break her of that. He was a bit of a distance keeper himself, but he had his reasons. He supposed that Zane had hers too, even if he didn’t understand them. The blue was like a small guardian for the girl, because goodness, she sure as shards needed one.

Zane could feel Tiael’s gaze on her, and when she diverted her brown eyes to the other, the way she was being looked at made her feel judged. Feeling judged made her feel the need to be smaller, and therefore she crushed her legs against her chest all the more, resting her chin upon her knees solemnly. She could feel her blush deepening if at all possible. The numbness of her face was a nuisance, and made it hard to talk even if she wanted to. You’re such a mess, why do you even bother? Negativity wasn’t bound to get her anywhere fast, but she’d never been going much of anywhere fast, anyways. She knew it, her flitt knew it, and even this new girl likely knew it. She heaved a sigh, not having meant for it to be heard, but when her lips parted it came out louder than she’d expected. She wanted to be a whole other person. She even dreamt of it sometimes, being anyone but herself, that is.

The respectful nod was also well received by Volcom. Tiael’s reassurance and chuckle made Zane smile of her own accord. ”Thank you,” she said quietly, looking rather child-like. She did tend to appear far younger than what she was. Then Tiael was stating the obvious, and Zane started at the spoken words. It was one thing that she suspected everyone was thinking that she didn’t trust them, but it was another thing entirely when they actually admitted it. ”I’m really sorry—I am. I’m not meaning to seem that way. I do though, I know, and I’m not meaning to hurt your feelings or anything either. You really do seem nice, I bet you are. I know you are,” she rambled, not having remembered to take a breath in-between. When she inhaled sharply, it came across as another act of distrust, and she cursed herself for it. The mischievous grin set her on edge, and she fought with herself to be open-minded. Expressions weren’t always what they seemed, and she couldn’t always know what people were thinking! She had to give others the benefit of the doubt, no matter what she assumed of them sometimes. Don’t be stupid, you hardly know her, and she really does seem nice. You didn’t lie... Zane was rather incapable of lying.

Then Tiael’s expression changed entirely, and despite her former thought, she was assuming again. She’d made her angry? How—why? What had she done wrong? Was she being rude by sitting like this? Should she offer that they sit on the bed? Would that seem weird? What if she thought she was hitting on her? She wouldn’t do that! No, certainly this girl wouldn’t even think that. What’s a matter with you? She too looked rather disgruntled at that point as she waited for an answer from Tiael. The half smile set Zane right again, and she shuffled a bit, her hair falling forward over her right shoulder. She didn’t move to push it back, merely remained still. Oh... Tiael’s response made the brunette frown deeply. So that’s why she’d responded the way she did? ”It’s okay, I know you’ll impress. I didn’t impress the last two times,” she explained, though she still couldn’t help but wonder if the latest time had been her fault or no... Should she even ask if any of the dragonets had gone /between?/ Zane bit her lip nervously, shrinking down.

”Oh... yes! Definitely, next time for sure. I just know that somehow you will,” she said, attempting to encourage the candidate. ”Oh!” she exclaimed, almost having missed the other’s introduction. ”Zane. Me... That’s me,” she chuckled softly, shrugging a shoulder for no apparent reason. ”I’ve been here a while, actually,” she nodded. She didn’t know why but it didn’t embarrass her to have stood a couple times now. She had gotten into the routine of being a candidate, and change was not her thing.

The mention of being on the sands made her face blanch... She was as white as a sheet, her eyes going wide like she’d just seen a dead man walking. ”I-I-,” she stuttered, the sudden urge to run and hide overly strong. Volcom sensed this and rubbed his wedge-shaped head up against her leg, crooning to her soothingly. She cleared her throat, sitting up taller, not that it was at all helping her cause. ”I didn’t go. I didn’t show up, when I should’ve,” she explained. She truly was incapable of lying. She’d almost seemed calm while explaining herself, but her faux calm turned into pure exasperation: ”Please don’t tell anyone! I was just so sure that I wouldn’t impress after last-time! Please, I don’t want to have to leave. Did any dragonets /between?/ I’d feel awful, but I doubt any were mine! I doubt it!” She didn’t even notice that her voice was slowly but surely raising until she was practically shouting at poor Tiael. She looked like she was about to cry. Maybe she was. She stared into the face of the other, begging and pleading for her to keep her secret.

The blue was cautious and briefly Tiael wondered just how much about a person a firelizard could read. Dragon's seemed to have a good sense about people, she was unsure how far firelizards went. What if he knew exactly what Tiael was like? It wasn't that she apologised for who she was, but she knew that many didn't see things the way she did. It was frustrating more than anything. He settled on his bonded's shoe though, watching her. She hadn't been seen off so she could only assume he was still making up his mind about her.

There was a brief moment, when the other girl actually looked at her. It was brief, and seemed to make her uncomfortable but Tiael didn't shift her gaze. Maybe she was starting to feel a least a bit more comfortable? Apparently not as she tried to curl herself into an even smaller ball. It was hard to tell just how old she was, what with her scrunched into as small a space as possible. Perhaps she was very young, unsure of herself yet? She'd seen a few like that around, though Tiael had always been sure of herself so again, she didn't really understand it. She even sighed and Tiael grew even more puzzled by her actions.

As the tentative conversation continued, Tiael was pleased to find the girl now smiling a little instead. She was like a scared critter, one moment cautiously venturing forward, the next she seemed to want to run, terrified. What on Pern made someone like that? Curiosity thoroughly peaked Tiael silently decided that it would be, interesting, to find out about her. She hadn't understood what had made someone a dragonrider, so she'd wanted to learn more. Now she didn't understand what could make someone so fearful and again wanted to learn more. People were curious creatures, far more interesting than she'd previously thought possible.

Just as she thought they were making progress, the girl started and began to ramble. Apologising yet again. "Hey, hey. Breathe there." She said quietly, smiling again and shaking her head a little. "You worry far too much, it takes a lot more to offend me so you can stop thinking like that ok?" Yup, just like a critter. Decidedly odd, but not frustrating enough to leave alone.

Impression was a slightly uncomfortable subject all round it seemed, as the girl explained she'd also been left alone on the sands. Not once, but twice. Was she talking to the right sort of person then? Perhaps, maybe she could learn what didn't work on the sands. Or perhaps, the girl really did worry too much and that was the problem.

Sitting herself down on the floor, the girl's abrupt change made her a little startled. She seemed so desperate to encourage Tiael yet she hardly even knew her. The older girl simply smiled again. "Well thank you, I'm sure you will too." She said, trying to see if encouragement was the way to get her talking more. "You have a pretty name, just like the rest of you." She added, tucking the name away and flicking her gaze over the girl once more. It was sharding tempting to push her hair back out of her face so she could get a better look, but right now it would probably send her screaming from the room.

It soon became clear why Tiael wasn't familiar with her face, the girl probably lived in her room and hadn't even made it to the hatching. Alright, she'd seen they could be a bit scary, but why be a candidate if you weren't even going to go to the hatching? Self-doubt, it seemed. It seemed to gnaw at her deeply if her reaction was anything to go by. Leaning back slightly as the girl all but yelled at her, Tiael remained quiet for a few moments. Pursing her lips thoughtfully, she debated whether to turn the girl in or not. It would certainly make her good at keeping to the rules, but then...Tiael wasn't much for rules. Besides, at least now she was talking? "None of them betweened." She said calmly, leaning forward and resting her elbows on her folded legs. "You definitely shouldn't miss the next one though....I wont tell anyone, if you promise you'll go how does that sound? It would be nice to stand with a familiar face."

Briefly, Tiael wondered if this was really worth the effort, if she was really worth the time. However, she found she couldn't just, up and walk away. She was so scared, so pathetic, left on her own she was going to continue to be a mess. Alright then, she'd have to fix that. In return Tiael would have someone else at the Weyr she knew and who would hopefully trust her. That was always useful. Plus, she was pretty. That was also something she couldn't say no to easily. Though she still didn't know how old she was, hopefully not too young or Tiael was going to have to have a serious look at her own perspectives.

At least Volcom wasn’t one to judge unfairly, Tiael had that on her side. He merely watched, and determined, and watched some more, and then made a decision. He wasn’t the most intelligent of flitter’s, certainly not in comparison to a gold or a bronze, yet he wasn’t the daftest either. He didn’t have the overeager personality that a lot of the flitt’s had, most literally flitting about without a clue. He had some thought procession going on in his little head; otherwise he likely wouldn’t still be on Zane’s shoe trying to grasp what the pair was going on about. Of course he wouldn’t be able to understand, not unless Zane clued him in with some simple picture messages, and even then he’d be lost. Ah well, he was doing his best.

As easy to read as Zane was, she did send plenty of mixed messages. She was constantly having that other conversation with herself in her head, and sometimes she outwardly reacted to thoughts she was having. People, whom obviously weren’t in her head, could easily be confused. She wasn’t meaning to confuse Tiael, if anything she wished that people could understand where she was coming from. It wasn’t likely to happen, but it’d be nice! To have her gaze met was daunting, and she was the first to look away. She was far more submissive than was right for any one person to be, but she’d always been that way. It was fair to say that she knew nothing else. Her foster parents had been good people, and treated her right, but during her being raised something had gone wrong... What that was something was, was a clear mystery to any and all.

Zane was an observer, so she discovered things about people that way. She never participated, so instead she listened in on conversations and found out what people were really like. (What she should be like.) A lot of the time she closed herself off, and shut the world out. She’d been doing that for a few days by not leaving her room. Okay, who was she kidding; she’d hardly left her room here at Vaioa. She went out to eat, and glance around a bit, and then she’d come racing on back. It was sad, but it was undoubtedly the truth. Volcom did his best to keep some semblance of contact between His and those about the Weyr. He knew that men were a write-off, boys like Dart were just fine (especially what with how young he was) but men were unquestionably a write-off. A part of him knew not to overwhelm her with too much too soon.

Her nervous chuckle was a result of being told to breathe. She began rocking back and forth a wee bit, hoping she didn’t look crazy. She stared forward, but her brown-eyed gaze flickered back to Tiael. She nodded her head rapidly as she was once again being reassured. She was always worried about offending people, so it was nice to hear that she wouldn’t offend Tiael. ”Thank you,” she said again. Likely she was to say that quite a few more times during this little... meet ‘n greet. ”You’re very nice when you don’t have to be. So thank you.” (Yep, there it was again.) People didn’t have to be nice, that was just it, and Zane wasn’t sure what she’d do if confronted with someone who was the opposite of her fellow candidate. Probably find a means of escape... Tiael’s words were soft-spoken which helped too. In truth, she missed her foster mother’s comfort. She had none of that here.

Smiling at Tiael was becoming far easier, and far more natural, even. She was still rocking, not at all noticing. Her grip on her legs had loosened, however, and her arms moved further down to her ankles. She scanned Tiael’s face, also not noticing that she was doing so. It wasn’t a conscious thing, and so once she realized she was staring, she all but set to stuttering again. ”I didn’t mean to,” was all she muttered, burying her face in her legs. Volcom was displeased, His was still having troubles. When was she not having troubles, was the thing? ”Please don’t feel obligated to stay,” she half-whimpered, her voice muffled.

She was being told that she would impress also, and in hearing this, she tilted her head to the side, keeping against her legs. ”You think so?” she mused, seeming to have faith in the girl’s opinion for the most part. She’s probably just saying it back to be polite you wherryhead. Then she forgot all about Tiael’s opinion on that subject, in light of another. ”Y-you think that-wait... Did I, uh...” Just calm down, swallow. On command she did swallow. Hard. ”You’re pretty too,” she decided on, doing her best not to stare. Tiael was pretty, nothing wrong with telling her that... or was there? Zane hit a whole new shade of red, and thus she couldn’t feel her face again. ”You’re really sweet,” she added. She’s going to think you’re hitting on her! Are you? No... No! How would you-why would you-no! You wouldn’t do that. She could hear her heartbeat thundering in her head. Had she been hitting on her? Oh god! In all of her jumble of thoughts she was still staring! She closed her eyes over tightly out of not knowing what else to do. She was an odd one.

Her hair crossed over her cheekbone, and when she re-opened her eyes, she just smiled innocently. Not that she needed to smile to be innocent. She’d hardly lived, and that alone made her innocent in one-way. When it came to moralistic innocence? She had that in the bag, too.

Tiael had the right idea about her and the way she was. As much as Zane wanted the facts to be anything but facts, they were, inevitably, facts. Hearing that no dragonets had /betweened,/ put her at further ease. Just sitting here with someone was relaxing, and she found herself enjoying it. ”I promise!” she was quick to declare, sounding very determined. ”I’ll be there, I feel so guilty about not being at the garnets. I do, I do, I swear I do...” Her voice got quieter and quieter as she spoke until she said the last in a near inaudible whisper.

Trust was a big thing for Zane. It didn’t come easily, and even when she got close to it, she always second-guessed herself, and the other person. It really was hard to tell her age with her all crunched up like she was. She didn’t really have much by way of a chest, and she was lean, and of average-height, so there wasn’t really much to go on there either. Her voice wasn’t all that mature sounding and her baby face had most guessing at sixteen turns and down. Fifteen even... But no, the girl was assuredly a solid eighteen turns come the past fall season. Quite a long ways from fifteen! She had some curves, not that she suspected anything about her form was appealing.

Well now, here seemed to be a little progress. Quite, which direction that progress was, Tiael wasn't sure though. While she had relaxed herself slightly, she was also now rocking back and forth. Fighting the urge to back away slightly, she forced herself to relax a little more; attempting to pretend that this was a completely normal situation. It was a bit odd for Tiael, to be thanked by someone. Though it was clear that Zane was perrilously close to swinging back to frightened again. Encouraging her seemed to be the right tact though, so Tiael merely smiled. "You're welcome. I generally find people get along better when they're nice to one another." It also helped her stay under the radar too but that wasn't something she needed to share out loud.

As she unfolded slightly, Tiael grinned and ran a hand through her hair, twirling a lock of it round her finger thoughtfully. The thing that was becoming blatantly clear about Zane, was that she lacked any form of tact or subtlety. It wasn't that she went out of her way to do things, she just seemed to catch herself doing things without realizing it. Like now, as Zane finally met her gaze, she then just sat there. Staring. Some might find it unnerving but Tiael merely sat there and watched back, blinking calmly. Hearing her stutter and almost apologize again made Tiael laugh, covering her mouth with the back of her hand to muffle the noise slightly. As she offered Tiael a very easy out, she calmed down and sighed, leaning back on her arms behind her. "I'm quite comfy here and enjoying the company thank you." She said lightly, though her gaze did sweep over the room for a moment. Typical candidate room though she was hard pressed to see anything that really stood out or caught her attention. It was rather like Zane in a way, she fought to not be noticed, her room seemed very ordinary.

Her gaze flicked back to the girl as they continued to chat, nodding firmly as she questioned her own ability to Impress a dragon. Her mannerisms and conversation were very child-like, it was rather hard to tell if these fit her or not. She was still puzzled about how old Zane was. At her compliment, the girl all but faceplanted into the floor as she began another verbal waterfall of stuttering. It was....cute, Tiael decided, making her smile and tilt her head to the side. "Well thank you." She said evenly, hearing a compliment in return. As the girl turned a deeper shade of red, something Tiael was almost sure wasn't possible, she stuttered out another compliment and Tiael raised an eyebrow. Uh..huh. Interesting. The second the words were out, she had closed her eyes as if trying to shut out the world. Or pretend she hadn't said anything. Well, well, well. "Well thank you again, a girl could get used to hearing compliments like that." She said with another grin. She sat up then, leaning forward as Zane opened her eyes again. "How old are you?" She asked curiously. Mind quietly whirring away behind a gentle expression.

Hearing that Zane wouldn't miss another hatching was strangely relieving. It was only hurting her chances to remain cooped up in here. Besides that though, Tiael didn't fancy facing the sands alone again. "It may have been for the best that you missed it, a boy died on the sands." Tiael frowned for a moment, and finally gave in to the irritation at watching the lock of hair falling across the girls face and tucked it gently behind her ear. "Much better." She said absentmindedly. "I'm sure the next hatching will go better for us both. In the meantime, don't let it eat at you too much. It's not good when you stop smiling." Tiael said with another mischievous grin. Aware her implication was probably flying right over the girl's head, didn't phase her. Nor did it stop her from seeing just how much the girl was actually taking in and what kinds of reactions she could get.

Her gaze flicked once more to the girls firelizard and she nodded to him again. "What is his name? He's a handsome creature." She asked suddenly, easing off the pressure a little and trying to keep the mood light.

Zane wasn’t sure what she’d done to warrant Tiael’s friendliness, but she didn’t mind. It was far better than having the girl upset with her, or treating her unkindly. The other girl had a point anyways, people got along far better when they were nice to one another. Zane managed to treat everyone with the same respect, if only because she was afraid of confrontations. She didn’t think that everyone necessarily deserved to be treated the same way, but who was she to judge? She didn’t think herself anything close to a gem, so it was better not to have karma rolling around to bite her in the backside. ”I agree completely.” Her own small smile spread further across her face. She hadn’t really thought anyone able to make her feel better about everything, but somehow Tiael was.

The teenaged candidate didn’t expect Tiael to just stare back, it was giving her a tingly feeling that she couldn’t decide if she welcomed or no. She couldn’t help that she stuttered, she just got so shardin’ nervous! Tiael was at least trying not to laugh at her, but Zane heaved a sigh regardless. Might as well just let Tiael leave now, surely she couldn’t have found anything pleasant about sticking around with someone as boring as her. You’re such a stick in the mud, she told herself, bringing an undesirable frown back to the brunette’s face. She was corrected, however, when the other girl informed her that she’d stay. Had she really just said she enjoyed her company? Zane’s gaze had wandered due to further, unsurprising, embarrassment. At hearing Tiael would stay, however, she permitted her eyes to wander back to the other’s face. Seeing as she couldn’t read minds, she was clueless to the fact that her newfound acquaintance was coming to realizations about her. Perhaps Tiael already knew her better than she knew herself. There were a lot of things that Zane attempted to both deny and ignore when it came to both her, and the way she dealt with the world around her. It was far too depressing to think her unusual, for she was; unusual that is.

Shutting down completely after being complimented, and being bold enough to dish out a compliment in return, she made a muffled squeaking sound when Tiael pointed out that a girl could get used to compliments like the one she’d given. ”I-I’m sorry if I... I didn’t mean to say anything to make you uncomfortable. I just figured that I should be honest!” she exclaimed rather loudly, causing Volcom to hiss. ”I just mean that you are, so I thought I should... you know, tell you?” There was a very clear pout on her face as she explained herself. Obviously she couldn’t just ever let something be when she had the slightest inkling that it may have been the wrong thing to say or do. Why would it be wrong? What makes complimenting someone wrong? Is it because you don’t want to give her some type-of impression? What impression would that be even? Her mind was running through questions like clothes through a wringer. Her head ache inducing questions were thankfully interrupted. ”How old are you?” she asked shyly in return, and then was quick to answer first since it was rude to not answer a question you’d been directly asked: ”I’m eighteen.” She wondered if the other girl believed her. Had she been asking for any particular reason? Did she think her a child? Zane suppressed a groan, feeling her stomach tense and knot once more. The gentle expression on Tiael’s face made her want to believe that the girl was thinking only good things of her, but she was wholly uncertain.

It took mere moments for Zane to completely pale, going as white as a sheet. She really did seem like a child by how quickly her eyes were made to shine with the formation of tears. ”Died?” she asked, choking up. ”From a dragonet?” she inquired, shuddering at the idea. ”Did you see it?” She wasn’t sure what made her want to know so much about the boy’s death. A part of her was hoping it had been quick, and therefore painless. Zane suddenly bit her lip, guilt thundering over her like a wave. ”I’m sorry if I’m making you remember when you’d prefer not to. You don’t have to answer, its okay. I just wanted to know whether or not it was quick,” she said, trying to keep her sniffles quiet. Her sniffles came to a screeching halt when she felt a hand in her hair. Her whole body tensed up, like she’d just been sucker-punched. Her face let on much of the same, for her nose was all wrinkled up. If there was ever anyone uncomfortable with contact, it was Zane. Something about touch set her on edge, and made her feel vulnerable, even if it was the simplest of things. She had the urge to move away from Tiael, but out of politeness she stayed. She looked to Volcom, because at that moment he was her only real source of comfort.

She focused on the other’s assurances that the next hatching would go better for them, having completely missed Tiael’s comment of: ”Much better,” once having moved her hair out of the way.

As typical as it was for such a comment to go over Zane’s head, and for her not to catch a mischievous look when she was being shot one, the girl seemed to grasp both Tiael’s comment, and her given look. ”I-I... What do you mean?” she heard herself asking before she could stop herself. Great, now she’s going to think you’re a bloody fool. For as often as she cursed in her head, she’d never dare to do so aloud. Feeling the need to quickly correct herself before Tiael thought she was weird, she quickly came up with: ”I mean... How is my smiling a good thing? I don’t really have a nice smile, at all, actually. You do, however, but I don’t really. So I was just confused as to why you’d say that. I guess you were just being nice, which I can understand. Thank you...” she paused at the end of her ramblings. ”... for being nice,” she finished quietly.

Volcom rumbled in laughter, not seeming to mind for the moment that His was scatterbrained. He looked over at Tiael, warming up to the idea of the other candidate being around. Perhaps it would do His some good! His needed all of the good things she could get! ”Volcom,” she blurted out. At hearing his name the blue flitt snapped out his wings, raising his head up high. He was a proud little flitt, and enjoyed being talked about. He really did do his best to keep His safe. She had no one to protect her and thus he’d taken it upon himself to be her saviour. His eyes whirred a slow mix of greens when he studied Tiael, still planning on keeping a watch of her, even if it did seem like she had the best of intentions.

(::) (::) (::) ...mmm cookies.
Zane seemed to go through about fifty emotions in a minute, each one spreading over her face in a myriad of expressions. Tiael had a feeling there were more thoughts going on inside her head though, the rate things seemed to change. She knew people could get funny about things but Zane seemed to jump at the slightest thing, worry over nothing and get herself into such a state that the notion that it might all be an act did flicker across her mind for a moment. Then the girl was stumbling over herself to apologise, overly apologising in case she'd offended her with what, a compliment?.....Curious. Well, mostly curious though a few thoughts began knocking about in her head that she didn't press together yet. They'd do that on their own if they fitted. “Do I look like I feel uncomfortable?” Tiael asked quietly, trying to carefully keep her features calm and pleasant. She didn't want to smile too much, because that would be laughing. Shards she was having to watch every little thing she did. Was that really healthy? “Look, if you offend me, trust me when I say you'll know, because I wont hang around.” She explained after a moment. “You haven't said anything that warrants me being offended.” Tiael stated simply, wondering just what was the best approach to things now. Watch her every move, or just plough on and hope the girl got used to it before her head exploded or she ran away. Hearing her own question turned on her, Tiael held out until she said how old she was. Eighteen? Eight, shading teen and she was like this? Were Holds really this bad on people? True she was not the first pretty girl from a Hold who was miserable that she'd met but they at least hadn't jumped at shadows as it were.

Curiosity was a terrible thing, it was what kept Tiael rooted in the room despite the fact that this girl would usually be more trouble than she was worth to the Candidate who found emotions a rather foggy affair at the best of times. “I'm nineteen, though very nearly twenty.” Tiael said, a smile quirking one side of her lips. “We're almost the same age.” Same age but not much else Tiael added silently. Tiael had no problem with confidence, you either had it when you were by yourself, or you were dead.

What Tiael hadn't been expecting, was for the girl to almost break into tears at the mention of the hatching. Oh Faranth, mistake. She rattled on, trying to explain her strange question while Tiael wondered just what kind of answer to give? No, actually he drowned in his own blood was possibly not going to help the situation, but still, you couldn't exactly sugar coat it could you? “It can happen, if you don't keep alert and move when an angry hatchling comes towards you. It was swift though.” She said, adding just a little sugar to it. At least that way, she wouldn't be terrified of the sands but at the same time, she wouldn't be so clueless she let herself get barrelled over.

Tiael stared as Zane broke out into a mumbled explanation of her own confusion, she'd paused, hand mid-air as Zane rambled. So much so that Tiael laughed after a moment and then relaxed back, leaning on her elbows. “I thought I said not to worry so much.” She said with a wink, then slumped forward and rested her elbows on her knees again. “I wasn't being nice...well, I was but I was also being honest.” She said in a matter-of-fact tone. “Even if you don't think so, take it from an observer, your smile? Very pretty. All the guys would be thrilled to see it...all the girls too for that matter I'm sure.” She said, another curve upwards of her lips though there was a familiar playful glint to her gaze.

As she was introduced to the firelizard, she remembered to keep things light and focused then upon him. Volcom. She turned the name over in his head. “A handsome name for a handsome creature.” She commented almost absent-mindedly. “He seems very well cared for, I bet he's been an invaluable friend.” She said softly, flicking her gaze back up to Zane curiously.
