Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Tahven stumbled into the hallway. A high pitched shout echoed after him as a shoe whistled past his head. The candidate grimaced while holding a hand to his bloody nose in a vain attempt to stem the flow. “You wherry brained little bitran!” The candidate spun, using his free hand to block the small cavern worker’s fist. Even now as he looked at her through his blood stained fingers he couldn’t help but grin. She really was a pretty little thing. Unfortunately she noticed the smile and her assault picked up with renewed vigor. Soon she had her remaining shoe in hand and tried to smack his head.

The tall candidate wouldn’t fight back, it was like watching a bronze get belittled by some green and just stand by for the abuse. At least she wasn’t too strong, that skinny little figure had nice curves, but there was no strength behind those punches. Lucky for him. But then she mananged a chance hit to his unshielded eye. Wincing as he stumbled back Tahven raised both hands out in front of him to try and keep her blows from hitting anything sensitive. “Stop! What did I do?”

A rain of blows descended and she shrieked, “What do you mean what did you do?!? You think you can come see me down here after…after…” She couldn’t breathe between her seething anger, couldn’t find the words. His guard was down however, and she delivered a quick and lethal kick to his groin. With tears in her eyes and a rather justified air she stomped away, pausing only to retrieve her shoe as Tahven doubled over in pain.

His nose was ignored now, and for some long moments all he could do was hold himself and groan. Then wincing he pulled himself up to a sitting position and slowly edged his way to the wall. Leaning against it he breathed deeply, sniffing hard at the blood and wincing as the bruised cartilage was irritated. Blood running down his throat he closed his eyes and tilted his head back to stem the flow. Was his side bruised to? Seemed a little painful to breath.

Laughing to himself he checked down the hall to make sure she was gone. “Well, that wasn’t nearly as bad as that greenrider…” Supposed she had seen him flirting with her sister down in the dining hall. That would be a mistake, right? Did it really deserve such action from her? How was he to know which one he liked until he got to know both of them? Sighing again he looked down at himself to see the mess he was in. Well there was no way he’d have any chance with her sister unless he cleaned himself up. Unless…did she go for the broken look?

The unsuspecting candidate hurried down the hall. She was on her way to the dining hall after a long day of chores, and she was looking forward to spending some time with friends and a nice cup of klah. Then she saw someone slumped over by the wall.

Maylina let out a little shriek of surprise at the sight of the other candidate's battered face. "Shard it...what happened to you?" she demanded. There wasn't anyone else around, so it seemed like someone had beat up the poor guy and left him standing there. Even with the bloody nose, she recognized him vaguely as one of the newer candidates, who had shown up late to the lesson the other day. "Do you need help?" she asked, bending down so she could be on his level. For once, she wasn't thinking about charming or flirting, she was just trying to be nice.

Tahven breathed deeply, the ache he’d felt in his side was nothing. Just a twinge from her hard heeled shoe. It might bruise, but the pain was already fading away. The nose however, before he could fully examine it he heard the familiar sound of soft steps coming down the hall. With a bit of a nervous edge he flicked his head to the side, letting out a breath of relief when he realized it was not his attacker approaching. Though his eye was slightly swollen and his nose was starting to impede his vision he could still notice the shape of the woman that approached.

Suddenly all thoughts for his attacker’s sister faded from his mind. She had been beautiful, but there was no way she had matched the creature approaching him now. Something caught in his throat, and suddenly his nose didn’t throb so badly. She gave a shriek of surprise and ran towards him. Thank the first egg she couldn’t see his eyes as he watched her run towards him. How could he look away from such a form? By the way she carried herself it was apparent she was used to the attentions of men, why else did she wear such form fitting clothes. Tahven swallowed hard as she bent down to his level. She really was making it difficult with such a low cut.

Praise Faranth at least her eyes were equally beautiful, concentrate on that and he would be alright. Thankfully Tahven was used to such practices with girls and he was able to focus on her. He raised his head, his nose had ceased bleeding, but his face was still a bloody mess. She actually sounded nice as well, there was genuine concern in her tone. For a moment he struggled to tell her the truth, wouldn’t it be impressive to make a story? But lies simply weren’t an option. Tahven grinned as best he could, blood cracking on his face.

“Made a pretty girl mad at me.” Hopefully she didn’t ask for too much more. Though it was shameful to be beaten by a girl. It was more shameful to run away and there was no way he could strike back at her, no taking the hits had been the best way to deal with the problem. Now he would just have to deal with the consequences. Tahven just hoped it didn’t make him miss a chance at the girl, no woman, in front of him. That form was not a girl’s body. “Think I’ll be alright, she was accurate, but didn’t hit too hard.”

He put a hand to his nose and felt it, pushing it and testing the give. Almost made him tear up, but it also let him know it was broken. Another stroke of luck that was. He might’ve shifted it out a place had it been really broken. “Nothing broken except my pride. What did you say your name was?”

It was hard for Maylina not to flinch as she looked into the boy's bloody face. She wasn't the most squeamish person in the world, but that didn't mean she liked gore, and all the blood had her stomach twisting up. When he offered an explanation for his state, however, she had to laugh. She knew it was wrong, but she loved the idea of a girl giving this man a piece of her mind.

"Don't even tell me what you did to deserve that," she said, rolling her eyes. Really, though, she was just teasing. Romance was just a game to her, so she didn't have the same enmity some women would for a "bad boy." She wrinkled her own nose as he poked at his. As far as she could tell, it wasn't broken, just banged up. "I didn't say...I'm Maylina. And you are?"

She straightened up, offering him her hand. "There's a room with a sink down the hall. You should get cleaned up...I'll help you." She knew the lower caverns well enough after all of the laundry chores she had been doing, and she didn't think anyone would be using that room right now.

Tahven couldn’t help but grin at her response. At least he wouldn’t have to give the details. Despite not fighting back it was still embarrassing to get pummeled by a woman. Besides if she had asked what he’d done to deserve the attack he didn’t think he could give a straight answer. Women were so fickle he could barely tell when they were pleased and when they when they were annoyed. Well his attacker had seemed happy enough earlier, but then she’d gone and become all moody. When he tried to ask her sister what was up well he couldn’t help be charming. Both had seemed rather pleasant to his face until he’d asked a question, but that was in the past now. Maylina…that was a pleasant name.

“Name’s Tahven.” He said as he took her offered hand. It felt so soft, looked so small beneath his large hand. It was truly a mystery how woman kept their skin so smooth. His own palm felt rough and callused but he was gentle as he tightened his grip. Carefully letting her help him up. Tahven remained mindful to do most the work himself, she was strong, but she was also much smaller than him. Letting the wall and his legs to the majority of the work but still giving some pressure so she felt like she was helping. It was nice for her to offer and it did keep him steady. Tahven simply didn’t want to pull her down on top of him…wait…

The chance was over as he gained his feet towering once more. He’d been ungainly in his youth, but now that he twenty-three years of age he had filled out well. No more the klutz and clumsy boy with hands and feet too big while he grew into them. “I just transferred from Benden.” He was thankful she knew where to go. Tahven avoided the laundry chores as best he could. Being trapped indoors soaking suds was not very appealing. Felt better to get out into the open air and do more manual labor. “So I’m glad you know where we’re going, I was beginning to feel a bit turned around.”

Tahven did his best to walk normally, but his nose had not been his most painful injury. He was still sore, but he put on a grim smile to cover up the twinge of pain he felt. Best try to make some kind of small talk to get his mind off it. “So, you don’t look to be as young as most of the other candidates I’ve seen. How’d you end up here? Figure a pretty thing like you would’ve broken some Hold Lord’s heart by now.” Too blunt, he really was rusty with all this. But by Faranth she was hot and it was muddling his head. Hopefully that sink was close so he could get the blood off his face.
