Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Zelle grinned at Tallyn and nodded slowly. "I sure do my best to. This girl doesn't ever go down without a fight." Though she honestly preferred to get away without having to. Sure she enjoyed her 'fun' but when it stops being 'fun' and turns into a load of trouble sometimes its best to just walk away. Her father let her do mostly what she wished so long as she stayed focused on her apprenticeship. It was the best way for her to learn, trial and error and good old fashioned experience.

"You have a point. Ha! Escaping on dragonback. That would be rather...epic." She grinned once again at Tallyn and winked back at him. He really was interesting company. Maybe they could hang out after this. It would certainly be something to look forward to other than another day of chores and lessons.

She listened to him talk about Impressing and was rather curious about how he really felt about being left standing like he had. But that was something for another time. "Don't worry. I have a feeling you might get lucky this time. Third times a charm, eh?" Zelle gave him a reassuring smile to match is own. "Thanks. I guess we all need to be reminded we're not completely useless sometimes." She suddenly stretched her arms above her head and then rubbed the back of her neck. Feeling a pretty comfortable and relaxed now thanks to the water which also meant getting a bit sleepy.

Nodding to his words about adding to their stories soon she thought about how her father wanted her to do something with her life. She had intended to do that on a ship but...it seemed he didn't want that for her. It was like Tallyn had been reading her thoughts when he asked about whether or not she would stay or go if given the chance. She bit her lip for a moment before answering slowly. "If I knew for certain that I wouldn't Impress? Well...I'd leave. I...do like this place but...I miss the sea. Its where I always felt I belonged." She shrugged trying to seem nonchalant about it. "But, I do want to try and make my father proud. He seems confident in me."

Tis the season for santa dragons
The young man grinned and nodded in agreement. "Having instant transport is rather nice. Though most holders are fairly respectful of Riders. Or at least they use to be." He knew of the troubles Vaioa was having with some of the holders. The first sight of thread would probably change their opinions quickly. Especially with more young dragons on the way the Weyr was going to need every Hold to tithe.

He shrugged, not wanting to commit to getting his hopes up. "Maybe we will both end up getting lucky." Even if one of both of them did not impress they would still have plenty of opportunities left to stand. The ones who really had it rough were the ones with only a year or two left to stand. He still hated to think of once again walking off the sands alone and knowing there was nothing he could do to prevent it. He couldn't force a hatchling to choose him, he knew that from past experience, and he hated how helpless it made him feel to have no control over what happened. He was use to succeeding or at least knowing what he had to do to make sure he did. Zelle's movements caught his eye, and broke through his thoughts. He still at least had a chance and that was all that really mattered. "Once Lisenyth clutches we'll have the egg touching to look forward to. If there is a Gold all the female candidates will have the bonus of seeing that one up close as well. He watched her face wondering if she had any desire to impress a Queen. For some a Queen was the only dragon worth impressing, much like Bronze was what many of the male candidates hoped for. He had desired to Impress a Bronze once, or at least that was what his father had hoped for. Now colored did not seem as important as it had in the past.

An eyebrow arched upward in amusement, "I think everyone would like to know for sure whether or not they would impress. It would make things a lot more simple. He sighed considering his own predicament. "No one knows, not even the dragons, what makes one person a rider and someone else not. It's a mystery and I suspect always will be. He went silent for a few moments. At least you will have something to go back to if you don't become a rider. I've only ever been trained to a rider. I did spend a few years at a Hold when I was younger, but I never learned a craft. He said with a touch of regret, sliding a hand absently through the water. "I'm sure you will make him very proud. Even just being searched is an honor."

"Yeah it is nice. And you're right. They USED to have respect for us. I heard about all that mess they are pulling with refusing tithes. That's a load of herdbeast dung." Zelle said with a shake of her head. It really was ridiculous to her. The dragonriders were there to protect Pern even if thread WASN'T falling. What if something new and more dangerous came along? Where would Pern be without the dragons to help? That was one thing she could give the Riders of Pern, her absolute respect. At least the ones that deserve it anyway.

Zelle grinned at him and nodded to his words. "Yeah maybe we will get lucky. Time will tell right?" She sat in silence as he seemed lost in thought and did her stretching trying to relax. And feeling sleepy. When he spoke again she chuckled and leaned against the pool wall. "I actually look forward to seeing the eggs. Though all the other girls can keep the gold. I personally wouldn't want one. Doubt I'd ever get one anyway." She let out a laugh and smiled. Shifting in the water a bit she tilted her head thinking. "I'd want a dragon that was a real fighter. If I did Impress a leader I wouldn't complain trust me but I'm more fond of the others. The browns, blues, grays, greens, and those fiery garnets. I like those guys."

She smirked and relaxed in the water listening to him speak. He seemed...regretful about something. Maybe she would ask him about it sometime. But right now she just wanted to relax some. Not too much or she just might fall asleep in the pool. "If only we could see the future right? And yeah...I guess I'm lucky that I have something to return to if I don't make it here." When he said that she would make her father proud she smiled and chuckled again. "Thanks. I sure hope so." Zelle let out a yawn while covering her mouth. "Shards...didn't realize I was this tired."

Tallyn grinned at her response. The respect that dragons and their rider's had once held had slowly changed over to resentment in some. They could not see the use of keeping and feeding full Weyrs when there was no thread to threaten their lives or livelihoods. "We've been without thread too long. We've all forgotten what it is like to live with the threat of it. Once it falls again Holders will be glad to tithe what is owed. " He said confidently. Holders would be glad to fulfill their duty to the Weyrs once they could see thread for themselves. He hoped he to would one day be able to take part in protecting Pern from thread.

"A clutch of eggs on the Sands is quite a sight to see." He cocked his head, watching her. "Well if there is a Queen it's up to her to decide. Sometimes it is quite a surprise which girl she chooses as her rider. He was not surprised by her preference. She seemed the sort that would enjoy the thrill and danger of riding a fighting color. "Lucky for me I don't have to worry much about impressing a Queen. Though the Garnet from the last clutch did impress a male rider, but I think I fairly safe from that happening. He said a knowingly.

The warm water felt good as soothed tense muscles and washed away the scent and grit of firestone. "If only.He said in response. Though it would make things quite boring if we always knew what to expect. Might even be worse than not knowing. He shrugged. Part of him would have liked to have known if there was a dragon in his future. If there wasn't though he'd rather not. He chuckled as Zelle yawn, "This warm water will do that. A little too relaxing sometimes. He rotated a shoulder experimentally, he had spent more time than he had originally planned in the pool. Pleasant company had made him linger longer than he normally would.
