Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Zelle was feeling tired, sore, and maybe a little bored. She loved the work now since it kept her busy and kept her from thinking about her father and how much she missed the ship. But nothing ever HAPPENED in the place! Aside from the current change of Weyrleader that had some people a bit bent out of shape and people getting ready for thread, nothing exciting ever happened. Part of her was tempted to do something desperate to fix that. Though at the same time she didn't want to get in too much trouble. Maybe something small...While she was doing all this thinking she was currently getting ready to head into the heated pools at the candidate barracks.

It was barely four candlemarks past exactly noon that she stupidly went and got herself nearly run over by a herdbeast while doing her chores. Twisting her ankle she had been told to go to the infirmary...but she didn't listen. Instead she wrapped it up herself and was told to go back to the barracks after telling the white lie of it was taken care of. Cursing under her breath as she made her way to her room, then slowly made her way to the heated pools. Hardly anyone was around at this time yet so she figured she would get some alone time and soak her sore body in the delightfully warm water. Once inside she started taking off her outer clothing but kept on her chest wrap and her underwear. Limping heavily to the edge she slipped herself in with a loud sigh.

"By Faranth's egg shards this feels wonderful..." Zelle said loudly to the empty area and slid far enough into the water for it to reach her chin. Closing her eyes she just let the pain in her body melt away. She started singing a rather off key version of one of the many songs she learned from working on the ship. Not really caring since she believed no one else to be there. As such she suddenly got an idea and looked around still humming to herself and with a sly smirk started taking off the rest of the clothing. She was alone right? So why not? Tossing the wet garments aside she went back to lounging in the warm water and humming loudly to herself...

Tallyn tugged at the nape of his sweat stained tunic. Anyone who thought getting assigned to the barracks as a chore had it easy was very wrong indeed. Especially when instead of cleaning the barracks they were sent to the firestone pits instead. The sulfuric scent of the stones clung to his clothing and body and he felt a grittiness all over from the dust stirred up from breaking apart the larger stones in to smaller pieces. He hands bore scratches from the stones and newly forming blisters from wielding the pickaxe. Tallyn had taken some comfort in knowing he was helping the weyr prepare for thread. Perhaps one of the pieced he had helped bag would end up destroying the old foe. What he needed and wanted most was a warm bath to both remove the stench of firestone and help relax his sore muscles.

He left his tunic in a pile on the floor of his room and select a clean tunic and pair of trousers. He seemed to have the place to himself so was a bit surprised to find he was not the first to have decided to enjoy the bathing pool. He stood for a moment at the entrance to the pool. The girl was not yet aware of his presences. Any sound he might have made had been masked by her loud humming. The fact that she was naked didn't particularly bother Tallyn, but he wasn't sure how she would feel about his presence in her current state of undress. Ah excuse me. Sorry to intrude. Seems we both had the same idea. If you mind sharing I can wait until you're finished. He offered. I'm Tallyn by the way. Was just hoping to get a quick soak and wash off this firestone stink before I get any complaints. He offered a quick smile.

Zelle hummed and sang to herself while floating in the warm waters but nearly choked when she heard the sudden male voice nearby. Thank Faranth she was good in the water otherwise she probably would have dunked herself in surprise. Snapping her head around she blinked slowly as his words soaked in. Well alright... "Nah I don't mind. Go ahead. Not like I haven't seen a man in a state of undress before," She said with a smirk and nonchalant tone. It was true. She had seen plenty of men naked or half naked. It didn't bother her. Besides, sometimes it gave her a great view.

"Tallyn huh? I'm Zelle. I understand the whole firestone stink thing. It can get pretty bad if you don't wash it off quick enough," She was rather interested by the fact he didn't seem bothered by her lack of clothing. Sure Zelle didn't care, she was used to it. But usually other people (particularly males) made a fuss about it. Or didn't and instantly thought they might get lucky if the girl didn't mind. "Hop on in. The water feels great, especially on sore muscles and twisted ankles."

She slightly lifted her ankle from the water and tried to move it but hissed in pain. It still stung pretty bad but at least it was feeling better than before. "Word of advice. Never be in the pens when a dragon is feeding. You'll get your tailfork run over." Zelle said jokingly with a touch of seriousness to her tone.

Tallyn smiled his thanks, proceeding into the bathing chamber. He smiled inwardly at her words and tone, not quite sure if she was boasting or hoping for something else. She was attractive and if she hadn't been a fellow candidate Tallyn wouldn't have minded going beyond friendship. He knew the rules well enough though and would risk jeopardizing his own or someone else's chances to stand. He remembered her from their lessons, it was hard to miss the tallest female candidate in the group.

He helped himself to some soap sand and towel and walked over to the edge of the pool not quite across from Zelle. Well met. It will be nice to have a name to go with the face. He set his clean clothes to the side, then placed the towel and soap sand within easy reach from the pool. He chuckled, I guess you have some experience with the stuff then. I suppose we will all have to get use to it sooner or later with thread on its way. He pulled off his trousers and slipped into the warm water. A grimace crossed his face as the water touched the abrasions on his hands, but the pain lasted only a few moments. He could already feel tight muscles beginning to relax with the warmth.

Tallyn dipped down beneath the surface, pushing water and hair from his face when he resurfaced. He applied some sand to the wet mop and started scrubbing. Nope not really a spot you want to be in. I'll assume that's what happened with your ankle. He said with a nod. Have you been a candidate for long? He was curious and cold quite pin her origins down. She wasn't the typical holder girl, but not a Weyrbrat either.

Zelle watched as the other candidate walked forward to get into the pool. He was...cute but not really her type. Though it could be fun to see just how comfortable he really is sharing his space with a naked woman. Smirking to herself she tried not to start grinning devilishly at her own thoughts. She could be nice for a little while longer before having some fun. After all she might end up just leaving the poor fellow alone...Maybe.

She nodded her head to him as spoke and gave him a bright smile. "I agree. Sometimes its frustrating recognizing someone but having no idea what to call them. Hence why I like to introduce myself as soon as possible." Zelle said with a chuckle while watching him. Not even bothering to hide the face she was eyeing him up and down. "Yes I've already had to deal with bagging firestone. Can't really stand the smell but its better than rotting fish. Much better." She watched him take off the rest of this clothes before getting into the warm water and tilted her head seeing him grimace. Guess he was hurt a bit too.

Waiting for him to finish dunking himself she shifted in the water thinking about how she could mess with the guy. She needed to get to know him a little more first...When he came back up and then responded she let out a laugh. "Yeah that's what happened. I was dumb enough to try walking through the pen while some dragon was feeding. Tried to dive out of the path of a scared herdbeast." Zelle chuckled at herself for the foolish mistake she had made. She knew better than to do that but she hadn't been paying attention. When asked if she had been a candidate long she shook her head. "Not really. I'm still pretty new. I got searched some time ago while in port with my father's ship. Took me by surprise." Running her hands through her wet hair she grinned before continuing. "What about you?"

If Tallyn noticed her watching his movements he gave no sign as he entered the water. He'd grown up with it and unless someone else made a fuss it was nothing unusually. If any of them did become riders this stuff would seem pretty tame compared to waking up next to someone who's name you might not know after a flight. The fact that Zelle didn't freak out added a pint in her favor. I imagine it won't gte any easier on us once there are eggs on the sands. There will be even more nameless faces to frustrate us then. And odd smile played across his features as some stray thought crossed his memory. Rotting fish eh? That must be up there with rotten meat. Though if you even get to clean out the vegetable bins you'd be surprised how nasty a rotten tuber can smell.

Tallyn worked the sand down around his neck and chest. Usually someone will warn whoever is in the pens, but with being a candidate they probably want to see how quick you were on your feet. A teasing smile tugged at his mouth. Having a bit of fun with the new candidates wasn't uncommon. Usually those hold bred got the brunt of it since they were less familiar with the workings of a Weyr and could more easily be led astray. Next time keep an eye to the sky. Most dragons like to circle and pick out a beast from above before they scatter. Usually gives you enough time to get out of the way. He dipped back beneath the surface to rinse the suds from his hair.

He nodded as she answered, impressed. He wasn't all that knowledgeable about ships and sailing, but he knew it wasn't an occupation woman often held. Well I'm not surprised. To be working on a ship you're just the sort to do well on the sands. Not like some of the soft Holders girls that come through. He was often surprised at some of the candidates selected to stand. Some he could not imagine carrying for themselves let alone a dragon. He returned his attention to Zelle. Weyrbrat. He answered. Though not from here. I transferred from Highreaches.

"Once there are eggs on the sands it will just get a little harder and a bit more interesting in my opinion." Zelle said with a smirk as she watched an odd smile spread on his face. She stretched out one of her legs to flex it a bit and get a kink out of it. Trying not to bump her still sore ankle. "Rotting fish, meat, tubers...it all smells horrid. But I bet it can't compare to the dragon privy. I've heard that's the worst." She let out a chuckle thinking about how she overheard two others that had been saddled with the chore and how much they complained about the smell. It was rather amusing.

Zelle watched him as he cleaned himself and spoke at the same time. So far the conversation was pretty decent if a bit dull. "It wouldn't surprise me one bit. As annoying as that is, it makes sense. Testing a candidate to see what they got," She reached up and ran her fingers through her wet hair again. Not that there was much to run through of course. "I'll try to remember that next time. Thanks. Hopefully I'll be able to keep my ankles twist free." She joked with a quiet chuckle then watched as he dunked himself again.

She smiled at his words feeling a touch of pride in the fact someone actually thought she could do well on the sands. So far she wasn't all that confident in that fact. Not in the least. "I can hope so. Otherwise my father convinced me to come for now reason. And I don't know...some of the Holder girls are at least nice to look at." Zelle said with a devilish smirk. When he told her about where he came from she nodded and smiled recognizing the name. "Highreaches? I visited there once with my father. Pretty nice place. So why did you end up down here?" she asked with a curious tilt of her head.

The young man chuckled at Elle's remark about the dragon privy. "Perhaps the one downside to impressing." He answered in agreement. "It's a good thing once they get older they can go between. I wouldn't want to have to clean up after a full grown dragon." He shook his head at the mental image of what an adult dragon would leave behind. It wasn't a pretty one.

Tallyn nodded quickly in agreement, "Getting Searched in the easy part really. The holdbred seem to have the have the hardest time adjusting to Weyr life. Some do well and others just don't" He finished with a shrug. Life as a rider wasn't all about just flying around on a dragon, as some seemed to believe. Especially with Thread's return riders and dragons would once again be facing the chance of death whenever they flew to meet it. Not everyone considered that when they agreed to become a candidate. Tallyn struggled to push back such thoughts. He didn't have to worry just yet. Even if he was lucky enough to impress it would still be a while before he would have to face thread. "I doubt they will catch you unaware again. He answered, pushing a clump of wet hair away from his eyes, a smile tugging at his mouth. He didn't know much about ships, but you couldn't be slow witted if you were to last for long on one. Zelle did not strike him as being so.

Tally looked at her a bit surprised. Most jumped at the chance to stand upon the sands, and did not mind the interruption and sudden change in direction to their life. Though most likely his opinion was skewed by his own upbringing, he had lived and breathed this life since birth. Zelle's remark about holder girls received a snort in response. "Sure if I fancy an angry father coming after me for sullying his daughters reputation. I prefer to wait until after they impress. I don't want to be leaving too many broken hearts around the barracks. He finished with a roguish grin.

He should have expected her question, but it still caught him off guard. The easy smile on his face faltered for a heartbeat. He leaned back against the side of the pool, willing suddenly tense muscles to relax. "Just two failed attempts on the sands. Decided trying at another Weyr might help my chances. Vaioa was due for a clutch and Weyrbred candidates as always welcome so here I am. He forced a lightness into his tone. "How about you? How did you end up here in the desert? It seemed a natural progress for the topic with the added bonus of steering away from his own past.

Zelle just nodded and chuckled at his comment about the dragon privies being the one downside to Impressing and shook her head to get rid of the image he brought up mentioning cleaning up after a full grown dragon. "Yeah that would be pretty bad." So far she was enjoying Tallyn's company and it helped that the water was keeping her so relaxed. She almost didn't have the energy to try and do anything devious. Almost.

She nodded once again to Tallyn's words about some people having more trouble than others fitting in to life at the Weyr. That was understandable. Some people were just not used to it and just couldn't manage. Zelle wondered if she would be able to manage...so far she had been doing pretty good in her opinion but there were days that she wondered why she was still there. When he said that she wouldn't caught unawares again she let out a soft laugh before responding. "I sure hope not. Get me once shame on them, get me twice shame on me right?" Zelle was going to make sure she didn't get caught off guard next time. That had been slightly humiliating.

Tallyn's response to her comment about the holder girls made her burst into laughter and she took deep breaths to calm herself. "I've had that happen to me enough to know how to avoid their clutches. Course being able to hop on a ship and leave to sea helped. But i guess I should be more careful now that I'm stuck in one place." She said with a devilish grin again before tilting her head at the boys roguish grin. Not bad. Made him look rather cute. Meh, she had seen cuter.

Seeing his easy smile falter for a moment she wondered what it was that had bothered him. Something about his past obviously. But that could wait till later. Much later depending..."At least you are getting another chance right? I wonder how many times I'll be left standing myself." She said jokingly though with a bit of seriousness in her voice. When asked how she ended up in the desert she snorted and smirked at Tallyn. "I was found while in port by some brownrider who had been flirting with me. My father insisted that I take the offer. Said he didn't want me to 'waste my life on a ship'. Didn't even give me much choice. And...here I am." Zelle shrugged her shoulders in a nonchalant way and then rolled her head to look at the other candidate. "Not much to my story either eh?"

The young man smiled as she quoted the old saying, "Something like that. Though I imagine you give as good as you get. She didn't strike him as the sort to take things lying down. Probably could even a bit of a troublemaker if his suspicions were correct. Often they were the most fun to be around. He'd never been much of troublemaker, no more than most weyrbrats were prone to be growing up. His father had made sure both he and his brother were to busy to have the time or energy to get up to too much mischief.

Tallyn joined in her laughter. It was not quite as free and easy as her own, but it was a start. "Nope you will have to behave yourself now. Well unless you impress then at least you will have a dragon upon which to make your escapes. He finished with a wink. Zelle was pleasant company. Not overly flirty like some of the holder girl could be once out from under the watchful eye of their parents. Nor did she seem to be a man hater, convinced that all men were scum and wanted little more than a night in the furs. He found both boring and irritating. Having to be careful around both, but for vastly different reasons.

How he could he explain what it was like to be left on the sands. To his friends leave with such joy after their dragon lifemates had found them. To know you had been passed over for another. It wasn't rejection yet it was. His dragon had not yet hatched and there was the fear that maybe the one for him never would. He scrubbed a hand across the rough stubble on his chin, "I suppose I have quite few more chances really. Candidates are allowed to stand up until their 26th turn. Though by then it's probably nearly impossible to start learning craft." He tone was matter of fact, hiding the gnawing doubt that seemed to increase with each failed attempt on the sands. It hadn't been there at all the first time he had stood, he'd been so sure, so confident in his success. The second time it had forced him into an act of foolish, nearly suicidal desperation. He didn't know what he'd do if he never impressed. He didn't have any skills outside the Weyr, and to stay with the constant reminder of what he wasn't seemed like a cruel option. He pulled away from his mental meandering and focus on Zelle, shaking his head at her doubt. "I'm sure you've nothing to worry about on that account. In the end it's the Dragon's choice. Either your dragon finds you or they don't. Her offered a reassuring smile. No one knew how or why dragon's chose how they did. Some pairings seemed to make perfect sense and others were a down right mystery.

Tallyn listened quietly as she spoke, considering her words. He smiled faintly as she mentioned their stories. He wondered what she would make of his. "I imagine both of us will have a bit more to add to them not to long from now." He responded. Afterall it shouldn't be too long now before Lisenyth would clutch and the return of thread was sure to make things quite exciting around the Weyr. Tallyn hesitated for a moment before continuing "Having been here for a bit. If you had a choice to stay here or return to your father's ship what do you think you'd do?"
