Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Three more eggs split open in quick succession, and wet little firelizards crawled forward on the table, opening wings experimentally and licking the last of the egg goo off their hides. The first and smallest of the lizards stretched out each limb, reveling in the room now that she was out of her eggy prison. She was a bright and vibrant green, and as she turned and extended each limb bronze markings were revealed on her headknobs and hind legs, and in bands along her tail. The coloration seemed to be desirable because she suddenly found herself in the midst of pieces of meat all being thrust in her direction and thoughts of desperate hopefulness flung at her mind. She squawked in irritation and turned her back on the crowd, regarding her older brothers with a displeased hiss.

The smaller of the two, a pale blue with cloudy white-grey mottles across his hide, puffed out his chest and spread his wings wide grumpily. The silly green had no right to challenge him! His larger brother, whose hide had dried into a yellowy bronze, simply moved forward calmly and pinned the green with a pointed stare. There was no time for theatrics when he was so hungry!

The green screamed her displeasure and turned away from them both, darting off the table and between the legs of the onlookers. She only stopped when she collided with someone's leg, and then moved forward toward his offered meat in somewhat dazed confusion.

The bronze turned toward his blue brother and grunted once, but the blue only growled and spread his wings wider to intimidate his bigger brother. As his wings buffeted the pile of laundry, the various garments shifted, and a glint of gold gleamed out from among the baubles and dirty socks.

The bronze turned away from the blue with an expression of exasperation and surveyed the offered pieces of food warily. There was some confusion as to where the green had gone, but without warning someone put a piece of food directly under his nose. Without hesitation he clamped down hungrily on it.

For just a moment, the blue was the only firelizard standing. He puffed his chest out in triumph again, bugling in a high, newly-hatched sort of way. The cracking of some of the remaining eggs behind him seemed to not bother him, but there was suddenly meat being held out in his general direction. He clicked his jaws together and then darted forward, seizing one.

How far away are they?!
Bodan: tag Lena

Fire Lizards. Fire Lizards. Fire Lizards. Fire Lizards!! To say that he was excited was an understatement. Bo wasn't excited: he was completely and utterly elated. Ever since he could remember he had been fascinated, no, obsessed with the tiny cousins of Dragons and for about the same length of time he had wanted one... Or fifty. To have an entourage... That had always been the dream.

Ever since meeting Lena at the Gather he had not stopped talking about them. He poor girl had never told him to shut up or change the subject and so he had continued to bore her with every fact he knew about the darling little things... And these were numerous. He had intended to drag the girl with him when the Fire Lizards began to hatch but she had promised to meet him there and for this he was glad. In front of Lena he acted brave and confident but he could not have been more nervous. He wanted a Fire Lizard more than anything, it was the only ambition he had ever had (even becoming a Rider had been on the back burner) so what if he didn't get one? Well he would be devestated!!

Rushing into the kitchens Bo hurried to find himself a place as close to the eggs as he could and found himself next to Lena by accident. "Hey!" he said enthusiastically. "Glad you could make it." and he meant it. Nothing else was said as his gaze was drawn to the babies before him, a tiny sound of utter elation and adoration escaped his lips... Oh how he wanted one...

L'ren had heard the stories of the clutching gold who'd apparently taken over the outer kitchen area with her hoard of T'ech's valuables on a countertop. The kitchen staff had been a-flurry ever since, and he himself had taken to steering clear of that particular corner of the kitchens to avoid the flitt's wrath toward anyone who dared come near her clutch!

He didn't have a firelizard himself, but he was charmed by the little creatures on the occasions he had the time to interact with them. So, though he did stay out of arm's reach, he did make a point to park himself in a position where he could watch Samus's nesting whenever he grabbed a meal. The kindly man laughed in sympathy with the few who were unlucky enough to receive a scratch from the wrathful little gold flitter.

And so it was on that afternoon that he had been eating and watching the gold's antics that the Weyr became aware of the imminence of her clutch's hatching. It wasn't long before residents were crowding around to see the tiny wonder of life.

L'ren picked up the last half of his meat roll, deposited the plate near the sinks, and made his way over to the throng of chattering folks watching the now cracking eggs. They certainly are charming little things, he said wistfully to his dragon when he managed to squeeze past the taller people and get a good look as the first hatchlings flopped into their new owner's lives.

Don't tell me you want one of those, now? Torenith's voice was lazy as he awoke from a nap, and L'ren could almost picture the brown's scornful, if playful, expression.

Chuckling and taking a bite of the half-eaten meat roll, L'ren grinned as someone managed to secure a bronze, Well, it wouldn't be so bad would it? They are lovely little things, and just think what a great help it would be to have an eager set of claws to help with your baths?

Well I suppose that wouldn't be so disagreeable.

The man's low chuckle was lost in the chatter of the crowd and he turned his attention back to the tiny rocking eggs, curious to see what else this clutch had in store for those so eagerly watching.

Slaemyr had heard the gossip about a flitt clutch in the Weyr's kitchens, and he planned to be there when it hatched. He had always wanted a flitt, since they were useful critters as well as being cute little companions, but back in Bitra eggs were too valuable for trading to keep one long enough to hatch it. Now, though, he didn't have to worry about that. He paid a drudge to come fetch him when it looked like the clutch was close to hatching.

Now, he ran into the kitchen hoping that he hadn't missed the whole hatching. A quick look around told him that while several babies had already made it out of their eggs, there were still some left. Tosst was there too, and he had Impressed a little blue flitt.

"Hopefully I'll get lucky too," he commented to the bronzehandler, squeezing into a place near the front of the crowd. Not too close, though. The gold mother didn't look too happy to see so many people around her.

Firelizards were such amusing little things. While she cheered on the fierce little green who had the guts to stand up to her larger brothers, that firelizard didn't have a chance to come anywhere near her before plunging off the table. When a number of people dived down after her, Brilis squirmed closer to the babies. Hah! Their pain, her gain. Not that she stepped on anyone, at least. Well, not hard. Felt like she caught a bit of hair or shirt or something under one foot, but she didn't stay there long.

Nor did she need to! As she reached her new place and shoved her meat-bearing hand between the crush of bodies towards the hatching lizards, she felt a firm tug and a weight on that hand. Was this success?

He is the one who thought his brother was silly for trying to intimidate him, Eth commented idly. At least he won't get worked up over your moods either.

Quiet, you overgrown lizard, Brilis shot back cheerfully as she carefully brought her arm back through the mash of humans. There was indeed a firelizard perched on her hand, greedily tearing away at the meat! A little bronze. She grinned and lifted him out of harm's way before working her way out of the crowd. Name ideas for the little success? she called to Eth eagerly.

I'm sure you are better at that than I am. Besides, he's already making me sleepy. That is annoying.

Then go plop in the last of the sun. We'll go flying in the morning. What do you think of Iubi?

Works for me.

Aniese stabbed moodily at a roasted tuber on her plate. The vegetable itself had done her no harm, but she found it the most convenient source to take out her irritation on, not in the least because Cedar was nowhere to be found-- not that she had the heart to express her displeasure with him, anyway, because of how prone he was to panicking. And although she'd lost some weight (they all had), the serving was enough to keep her from being outright hungry. It was, in a sense, just barely enough to eat.

If O'zen's calculations had been correct, and she was inclined to think that they had been, then Thread would be here soon. In fact, it was nearly upon them. Tomorrow, numbweed would be boiled in the Lower Caverns in preparation for what would, no doubt, be a bloody First Fall. The days were still chilly but there was a noticeable difference; she no longer had to wear furs when outside unless it was evening or nighttime. If the air warmed enough to allow thread to survive....

Aniese didn't want to think about it. She was quickly realizing how useless she was, or at least, would become if-- no, when-- Thread fell. Sure, she'd brought food to the Weyr-- but so what? That wouldn't help when her parents restored tithes. And then she'd become truly useless.

She sighed in frustration but finished her food nevertheless. She wasn't that hungry now, but she knew that she would be later, if she didn't eat. Not to mention that wasting food was pointless right now, when there was already so few to go around.

Cedar appeared at that moment, dancing on the table before her eagerly. Aniese looked down at the brown with surprise; he was rarely this excited. And then she heard why; a humming began somewhere in the back of the kitchens and Cedar took it up, interspersing trills of his own. Soon, Lizards from the whole Weyr were swooping into the dining room. The air was full of chaos as they snatched food from the tables and took it to the clutch, or perched on surfaces left and right.

"Well, let me clean up," Aniese scolded Cedar shortly before heading back into the kitchens. The narrow corridor just outside the basin was quickly filling, and Aniese saw why; there was a nest made out of what looked like rags and scraps of cloth, and a gold was watching the assemblers jealously. Firelizard eggs gleamed unmistakably between her claws.

Aniese moved closer, just as curious as everyone else. Cedar hummed happily on her shoulder, encouraging the eggs to hatch forth.

Among the littered eggshells remained a portion of the clutch still, and the firelizards hatched with increasing alacrity. A green and two blues fell onto the tabletop surface, the green righting herself easily but the blues scrabbling on the fragments of shells and remnants of egg goo for a longer moment.

The blues were both very handsome; the smaller of the two was a vivid shade of royal blue but with deepest navy sprinkling this snout and 4 limbs, and the larger of the two was a very dark navy, only gleaming with blues when he moved. Next to her two brightly colored brothers, the green seemed less remarkable; a pale grassy green not far from new spines on a desert plant, and mottled slightly all over with faint grey pebbles. Still, despite her less-saturated hide tone, she possessed a clear femininity that the blues lacked.

For a moment, all three of them stood, gaining their bearings, shocked into this new world. But then the brightest of the blues moved forward, sniffing the air delicately. His stomach growled loudly, inaudible over the noise of the hatching song. He was hungry, and the food smelled good! There would be no theatrics from him; just common sense and a desire to be fed.

The green hesitated longer, but the dark blue seemed just as likely not to move; he, rather, was backing up slightly. He seemed reluctant to emerge far from the relative safety of the nest.

The noise of more eggs cracking and insistent firelizard chirping from the gathered lizards added to the din, and seemed to startle the green into moving. Despite her reluctance to venture close to the gathered people, she shot off in a quick scurry, darting under outstretched hands until a fresh morsel of meat was extended out to her and she stopped, almost unwilling to stop fleeing but sufficiently hungry to gobble the meat up.

The remaining blue was very unwilling to move; he seemed to prefer the relative shadow of the overhang and the comfort of the nest. But the longer he stayed, the hungrier he got; he mewled in frustration, hungry enough to know he needed to go out but not quite able to actually leave the nest. The world was too scary. Luckily for him, he was rewarded with the approach of food; hands carried the meat closer to him. Finally burying his dislike for interacting with others, he stepped forward and claimed some of the meat on one of the closest hands.

Two more eggs cracked open, but only one firelizard stepped forth immediately; the other was hiding for the time being, still well nested in the mass of laundry and baubles. Still, as the light hit the firelizard, he was anything but average: a pretty shade of dark sky blue covered in silvery markings all across his form. He gleamed as he walked, and quickly found himself the subject of thoughts pressing in-- hopeful, desperate for him to take the food, pleased at such colorations. He hesitated for a minute and looked back at the nest, although he was rather hungry.

There were few eggs left but the whole next was shifting, and as a head popped out, it was clear why. Apparently Samus had buried this egg deeper than the rest, feeling either possessive or simply motherly. Nevertheless, as the lizard struggled out of the wrappings, the unmistakable gleam of gold flashed out.

With two attractive firelizards, it was clear that the hopefuls were reluctant. The blue watched the gold for a moment, curious, but as she finally gained shaky footing on the tabletop, she simply looked away from him in disinterest. Her hide was a very pale color, but unmistakably yellow; white markings covered her torso, but these were nearly indistinguishable beneath the pristine gleaming of her hide. She spread her wings fussily, aware of the attention and proud of it.

Well, that didn't bother him. All he felt right now was hunger. Possessing an unusual calmness for a firelizard of his stature, he simply marched forward and chose a piece of food, beginning to devour it ravenously.

Only once the blue had been cleared away did the gold firelizard condescend to look at the other hands. Surely she didn't need any of them. Rather, she'd be doing them a favor by letting them feed her. Yes, that was it. With that decision made, she sprung forward unexpectedly and with an ungainly sprawl, landing on the nearest piece of meat she could find and gobbling it down.

Only five eggs of the original 18 remained; most of the lizards had hatched, and it seemed to have taken no time at all. The remaining creamy eggshells were cracking and buckling under the forceful movements of their occupants, and it was only a matter of seconds before three of the five eggs hatched, leaving the last twi eggs to twitch and wiggle among the dirty socks and eggshells.

The firelizards were brown, blue, and green. The blue immediately caught the attention of most of the remaining hopefuls, as his hide was a bright and heavily-saturated shade of ligher blue, a color found only on flowers if it ever was present in nature. The thoughts suddenly directed at him made him freeze up and hesitate shyly; he seemed reluctant to accept the attention.

Meanwhile, the green caused quite a stir too-- if, indeed, she really was a green. Her hide was so greyish that she appeared to be closer to charcoal than to green; it was only due to the pale mint undertones that the watchers could, indeed, confirm that she was a green. Even then, her coloration was quite unusual and difficult to tell. However, unlike her blue brother, she seemed to enjoy it; she chirped eagerly and nudged her brown brother eagerly. The smell of food was nearby and she was hungry!

The brown was a warm shade approaching orange. He was, in fact, rather pretty. Like the green, he seemed less interested in avoiding the attention and more interested in finding food. This was facilitated by a pair of hands thrusting forward to meet him, cradling some food. He leapt upon it eagerly.

The shy blue was faced with a dilemma; to eat or to avoid the attention. The attention wasn't likely to go away. He stared hungrily around for a moment, then leaped forward and snapped a morsel up in his jaws. At least he could do something about the hunger.

The gray-green watched the hands for a moment with apparent satisfaction, and then sauntered forward carelessly and located a hand with a morsel of meat that looked particularly delicious. She would have this one, then.

(( What a surprise! Thanks, Icy! ))

Xalaer burbled in his sleep, tight and cozy in the woman's warm embrace. He twisted his head slightly to help himself breathe, and continued to sleep. Baer cast him a happy smile, and Anatolia continued to warble on her shoulder. Perhaps that warbling was her own way of welcoming the eggs to the world. She unconsciously shifted her weight, for Xalaer was a heavy baby no matter how small he was, and settled into a lopsided standing position.

She'd ended up taking a piece of meat from a passing drudge even if she'd told Chryssenth that she didn't need another firelizard. But she massaged the meat in her hand, uncaring of the way its juices dripped down. Anatolia did not care, either, it seemed. She was sitting on Baer's shoulder, obviously ignorant to the fact that food was right in front of her. She was still singing away.

There was a particular green that had hatched that hadn't gotten past Baer's attention, though she was a dull-looking creature barely even green in color. Baer had no hoped, for she would not allow herself to hope, but the green firelizard hatched and, very quickly, found her way to the bleach-blond woman. A grin split Baer's face as Impression, though faint, was made.

"Look, Ana, a new sister." Baer said as the firelizard ate the meat offered and settled down to ask for more. She was a social creature, already talking to Anatolia as if Ana were a firelizard, not a wherry. Ana continued to ignore her, for what could Ana do? The wherry was tied to Baer, and she was not. More food was presented, and more food was eaten. "What should her name be?"

The answer, surprisingly, came from Chryssenth: Little Sister. I want to see the Little Sister.

Little Sister she was, though later she would be renamed Auge.
