Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Zelle was taken by complete surprise by the hug she was given by Taavi. She just let out a laugh and smiled at the young man. Well he was certainly friendly. That just added to her good mood it seemed. "Guess I can understand all that trouble they give you. Especially being in the kitchens. Whatnots and whatfors certainly sound troublesome." She said a bit jokingly while turning back to the eggs. As more people entered the room she wondered if there would even be any room. But soon she was distracted by the sound of eggs cracking.

Her eyes became glued to the first egg to hatch. It was a handsome looking brown and she smiled watching it. When the bowl of scraps was brought she took a piece figuring, why not? Maybe she would get lucky. When the second egg hatched she grinned seeing the beautiful colors on the little blue flit. True blue turning into a indigo hue at the wings. There were a few other spots but his wet hide made it hard to see.

She held her breath and made sure to hold out the piece of meat for the little ones to see. At first she figured they wouldn't even notice her with all these other people but sure enough...the little blue turned her way and snatched at the scrap greedily. When Taavi touched her shoulder she turned to him with a bright grin and looked back to the little flit. Zelle quickly grabbed another piece of meat as the blue finished off the first piece and when she felt something...strange touch her mind. It was like a curiosity mixed with comfort and tinged with lingering hunger. "Hello there lil fella..."

He looked at her and moved closer chirping almost questioningly. This big person felt...right. Yes. They fed him and look pretty alright. They would do. Zelle tried to think...of a name. Yes yes a name. The little blue stretched his neck out with a hungry creel and she handed him the other piece of meat. "Tardis. I think that's what I'll call you." 'Tardis' surprised her by looking up at her and chirping loudly and proudly at the name. Stretching out his indigo colored wings and puffing up. "So you like that name. Good." She reached out her hand for him and the little one practically strutted into her hands and crawled up her arm. She smiled as he clung to her shoulder and creeled again for more food. "OK ok...I'll get you more. Greedy thing."

((Omg @.@ Sorry it got so long. Forgive my silly brain.))

Two greens and a brown simultaneously spilled out in a mess of wet wings and limbs. One green righted herself, chirping grumpily at the other two and giving herself a shake for good measure; egg goo and shards went flying, yet her hide still retained an odd hue, as though there was some sort of sheen or oil. Although she was a vibrant, deep green, the sheen made her appear somehow dusty. She turned immediately to her brother and sister and chirped again at them, almost bossily.

The green stepped out of the mess of eggshells and growled at her sister. She was a brighter shade of green, fading into an interesting yellow-green along all of her limbs. She seemed to be more aware of the crowd than her sister, but nevertheless showed resentment for the darker green's sassy tone.

Meanwhile, the brown meticulously picked off the pieces of eggshell the darker green had sent his way. He'd been incredibly hungry and focused upon only the nearby food-- he was sure he could smell it-- before the uncalled-for assault of gunk and trash. His own discontent was just compounded by the overriding hunger.

The dark green gave him up for a bad job; he was too focused on himself. However, the green gave a good reaction. She'd be fun to play with, or maybe fight. The green jumped at her sister, crying loudly.

The brighter green hissed immediately and darted away, directing an angry glare at her sister before running smack dab into a hand that was extended with food. She only had a moment to get over her dazed confusion before she swallowed it all in one bite.

Beneath the brown's shell-covered exterior he was revealed to be unusually pale, much closer to the color of beach sand than tree wood. His back legs, haunches, and tail were covered in deep brown markings. He discarded the last of the shells and took a step forward, enticed again by the aromas of food.

The dark green watched him speculatively before chirping hopefully at him. She was hungry, but the prospect of hands grabbing her when she ventured too close was scary. However, the brown merely leveled his sister a flatly condescending look and took measured steps past her, fastening onto a piece of meat.

Well, that was just silly! As if he was better than she was! The green puffed herself up indignantly. Anything that he could do, she could do too! She turned to face the hands nearby before finally rushing forward and grabbing some of the meat.

The kitchen was quickly becoming crowded and X'van was sure that it was only a matter of time before the cooks got irritated. It was bad enough that Samus had chosen to clutch in the kitchens, but now there was a crowd of people there while the little beasties hatched. The brownrider snapped up a handful of the scraps that were being passed around and sent the bowl into another set of waiting hands. He secured himself a fairly close position to the clutch and simply waited. his eyes darted from egg to egg, inspecting each one for fractures when one finally split open. A dark brown hatchling crawled out from the shell and looked around. Girl trilled sweetly welcoming him and the blue who hatched right behind him into the world.

The little brown looked around, unsure of where to go. he creeled and wobbled forward and X'van thrust his hand out and wriggled a piece of meat. It would be sheer luck to turn the creatures head, but lo and behold, the brown took a shaky step his direction. The brownrider let him have the meat and then offered another piece as he tried to lure the hatchling closer. Inch by inch the brown moved closure, fanning his wings as he began to dry. Even with the chaos erupting around him, the brown was unflappable and seemed to know exactly what he wanted. The tiny wedge head bumped against the rider's knuckles sweetly before accepting for food. Finally the brownrider was able to scoop the hatchling off the counter and stepped back to continue stuffing his gut.

X'van smiled, thrilled at his fortune. Even Girl seemed impressed with the new addition. "What shall we call him, Girl? Boy? Then I'll have a pair of you!" He laughed and stroked the tiny head, realizing that the hatchling was already dropping off to sleep. "Boy it is!"

It had taken Baer a while to get used to doing things again without a swollen stomach. Only through months of hard work trying to flatten it again did it finally listen. But now she had another problem to worry about: her son, Xalaer. Not old enough to start crawling, sitting up, or other movements of the sort, but old enough to realize that he wasn't with his mother, the babe was in constant need of Baer's touch. Right now, he was bundled up against her chest, happily asleep to the sound of her heart. She herself had made her way to the lower caverns, where Chryssenth had stated quite shortly that 'they' were being hatched.

Anatolia, Baer's wherry, sat on Baer's shoulder, tied to her master by a leather thong that attached to Baer's wrist. She was presently whistling a sing-songy tune that somehow wasn't truly befitting of a firelizard hatching. Her brightly-colored protofeathers stuck out in all directions; clearly, she was happy to be out of Baer's weyr. Strangely enough, Ana loved singing Xalaer to sleep, and Baer wondered with a sigh what would happen when the wherry died. Wherries didn't live very long, and Baer had had Ana for quite some time.

Dysis, Baer's green firelizard of only a few months older than her son, was nowhere to be seen. In fact, the blond woman rarely saw the green firelizard anyway, for she was shy beyond any reasonable belief. That Dysis kept to Baer's neck, hidden by blond hair, was one thing, but that Dysis was, of current standards, stuck in a hideaway somewhere, probably scared over a trundlebug... well, the sultry woman probably should have been worried but truthfully wasn't.

You won't get another? Chryssenth asked offhandedly, as if her mind was on more important things. She rather liked the company of the small creatures, when she remembered they were there. And she wanted more littler-than-her-dragons, because the one she had didn't even show herself most times. 'I'll let others go first, Chrys. You know I have two pets already.' Chryssenth just snorted, Humans don't choose. We do.

Except Chryssenth didn't get that firelizards weren't like dragons, only smaller. But she couldn't say anything.

"At one point, I was convinced I even saw a whyfor. But, looking back, I'm pretty sure it was just a garden-variety whatfor. That's far more likely," he said, solemnity clinging to his tone like an illness. Although it was awfully difficult to keep a straight face around the sheer adorableness that was firelizards. He watched with interest as Zelle managed to get one of the little guys, a rather lovely blue.

Well, good for her! He'd definitely have to try to get one too, if only so he'd have a reliable messenger to send things home. One of the larger colors would be better, he knew. Rumor had it, they were more intelligent and they could carry larger things, right? And look! There was a little brown right there, along with two greens, one of whom was quite the little spitfire.

"Hey, Zelle, have you managed to sneak a peek at the dragon eggs yet?" he asked, already distracted again as he jiggled a bit of meat at the newly-hatched flits. "I haven't gotten a chance myself. I've heard the clutch is huge, though an--Hey!"

Tiny jaws fixed around Taavi's finger. How dare he not offer her more food? The little green knew exactly what she wanted when she wanted it and she was not getting it, therefore he would be punished for it. She skreed at him, flaring out her wings defiantly. She wanted more food! Now! She was determined to show all of her clutchsiblings that her human was by far the very best!

Unfortunately, he was proving to be rather slow...

Taavi shook his hand until the newly-hatched green dislodged. "Little bratling," he murmured, but his annoyance wore off quickly. You didn't live with three little sisters for over a decade without getting used to being bitten. He offered the flit another bit of meat, cementing the bond. Gently, he picked the small firelizard up. "What a hide you've got there," he said, quite happy with the flit. Alright, a green would work just as well.

Even if she did have a bit of an attitude problem there. She hissed at him again and started to groom herself. Everything would be perfect. "Thyme," he decided. It sounded about right. "Either that, or Miss Bossybritches. What do you think?"

D’art – Tag Zelle:

D’art couldn’t help but feel slightly annoyed and possessive as more and more people gathered for the spectacle. Fire lizards streamed in from all entrances or simply appeared in middar. Their loud hum was nothing compared to that of a dragon hatching but it still went bone-deep and added an eerily welcoming atmosphere to the event. There was meat being passed around; no doubt some clever drudge had seen what he had and readied things ahead of time. D’art accepted it with a smile and turned that smile briefly on a girl who addressed him.

“They really are beautiful, but not all of them are tiny. The golds can get too big to sit properly on a man’s shoulders.” The first of the eggs was cracking, D’art held up a piece of meat in plain sight and squared his shoulders. No matter how much pushing and shoving people might do to get close to the fire lizard eggs, he had been here first. It might not be his queen sitting on those eggs but he’d been watching them like a dragon watched a fat wherry for far too long to let himself be jostled aside in the heat of the moment. The first hatchling looked almost like a dark bronze but there was no metallic sheen to his hide. As he dried, it was plain to see that he a brown and just as single-minded as any hatchling. D’art didn’t even have a chance to get his attention before the brown looked to a nearby rider.

Before he could wish Zelle luck, a pretty little blue had seized the meat right out of her hand and was squealing for more. “Oh! Congratulations! He’s beautiful. Make sure you keep him oiled, they grow really quickly at first.” There was a familiar weight on his shoulders then and a melodic voice in his ear. A brown cheek rubbed against the right side of his face and a blue one to the left. Ganon settled his bronze bulk atop his boy’s head. D’art’s smile was ecstatic. With his fire lizards crooning and humming greetings to the rapidly hatching eggs it wasn’t long before they attracted the attention of a hatchling.

D’art uttered a startled squeak rather unbefitting of a dragonrider as the bright green creature smacked into his hand. The brownrider laughed a bit as he realized his “all boys” rule for fire lizards had finally been broken. Not that he was complaining at all. He wanted this darling little creature just as much as he’d wanted the rest of his and if he didn’t snatch her up, someone else would. She squealed when he scooped her up, squirmed and tried to get away at first. But when he presented her with more food, she stopped protesting, focused on eating, and didn’t fight the tentative bond that formed between them. He could feel how pleased his boys were at the female addition to their ranks. Nemo took a particular interest in her, leaning precariously off his shoulder to get a better look at the infant.

“I’m glad you approve,” D’art laughed. “I’ll name her Rita.” He stroked her jewel-bright green hide and shivered a bit when she crooned adoringly up at him. Contentment filtered back through their tenuous link and he knew that she was his now. “Welcome to the family, Rita.”

Q'wyn sat at an empty table, idly poking at the bowl of rapidly cooling porridge as his mind poked at various thoughts. The new clutch, for one, and the new Weyrleader. That's my Wingleader, he thought smugly to himself, grinning a bit with his inside ability to rub elbows. Before he was Weyrleader he was MY Wingleader. And now I know the Weyrleader.

Everyone knows the Weyrleader, Jumeeth reminded him patiently. She had taken time from her ragged attempt to soak up as much winter sun as she could to remind Q'wyn not to get too ahead of himself. He sighed outwardly and capitulated to her pull at his humility. It was true, the Weyrleader WAS known by everyone, the Weyrwoman, too. Any more thoughts on the subject were cut short when a blue firelizard zoomed by his face, the little creature's wingfingers grazing his cheek. Following the line of sight of the flitter, he could see quite a few of them swarming over the heads of riders jostling for position. He could hear a shout about eggs, and he was out of his seat in a moment. What is it? Jumeeth asked worriedly, half-rearing on the heights in reaction to his jolt of surprise.

Firelizard eggs! I'm going to go see if I can get us one!

Oh, I thought something bad was happening. Jumeeth said with some irritation. Not for the idea of the flitter, of course, but just with the idea of being startled for no reason. Settling back down to her spot, she returned to her nap as Q'wyn nudged his way to a spot near the impromptu nest. He had never Impressed a flitter of his own, but his father had three and had advised the grudging young Q'wyn to have plenty of food on hand if he ever planned on acquiring a 'lizard of his own. Deftly, Q'wyn snagged a few scraps of meat from the overflowing bowl of someone standing nearby and knelt, still singing that ridiculously catchy tune under his breath as he waited to try his luck.

Tiael would have loved to have been first on the scene, first to watch the eggs split open and reveal their tiny occupants. As it was however, she'd only heard about the hatching when a weyrbrat had all but barrelled through the halls shrieking about Firelizard hatchlings.

Right, so, they were hatching. She should, why she should head along and try for one shouldn't she? After all she'd all but said as much to Ebylin the other week that she really wanted one. They were so pretty, but also, so very useful. Yes, she'd be kicking herself in the foot if she didn't at least try to get one.

So, she hurried along, edging round people and slipping quietly towards the gathered crowd. You couldn't miss it really, in the kitchen, a swarm of firelizards and a crowd of people. Quickly, she took up one of the bowls, sniffing the scraps of meat within out of interest. Oh, that was a familiar smell. Meats prepared by the kitchen, well, she could keep up a supply of those with no trouble at all. Always good to know what she needed to feed them. She also caught a comment about oiling them regularly. She was sure she could manage that too.

Carefully, she sidled past a bunch of people, sneaking through to the front and settling in amongst the others. Shards, she'd already missed several. Still, lots of eggs left! Peering around at the hatchlings, she spotted a pretty Blue and peered over to spoke Zelle, proudly holding her newest companion. Eyebrows raised a little, she smiled. "Congratulations" She commented, peering about at the others but realising she didn't really know many of them at all. She'd have to figure out some names in case she had questions about the wee beasties. The small boy talking to Zelle seemed to have a fair idea about things, so she listened closely in case his name was mentioned.

Her gaze wandered while her ears listened, taking in the clutch. Taking some meat, she held it out like the others and waited to see if she could attract the attention of a baby.

Patience, please: energy currently deceased
Brilis was lounging in the dining hall. She did that rather often in the evenings, honestly; that was where people were, and she and Eth were tired, so no acrobatics late into the night. Not today, anyway. It turned out to be a very good thing, for it was about when she was considering wandering back up to her weyr, since no one interesting had showed up like she had hoped, when there was a sudden burst of chaos. Brilis liked chaos. It was interesting. As such, she sprang up from her seat, her mug of klah entirely forgotten, and hurried into the kitchens with the rest of the interested crowd.

Want me to try for a flitter? she asked Eth teasingly. Be finally something that could fly circles around you.

The blue snorted over the former haunch of meat he was gnawing. Go ahead. Might be interesting. We could send it out to scope out interesting places to fly.

Good idea! Have to nab one first, though, and there're quite a few people crammed in here.

Evasive manoeuvers, of course!

Laughing, Brilis wormed her way through the growing crush, unabashedly squeezing between people and apparently stepping on a few toes in order to find a spot where she could see and potentially reach a firelizard. On her way, she cheerfully lifted someone else's handful of meat scraps to dangle in front of a baby's nose. Walking stomachs, they are, she commented drily. Or are you going to teach one better manners?

Of course.

Curse Your Sudden But Inevitable Betrayal
Humming lightly to herself, Selena made her way into the dining hall and glanced around for the Candidate she was supposed to be meeting. Bodan was nowhere in sight, so she grabbed a drink and sat down at an unoccupied table - she knew that she was a bit early anyway. The upcoming clutch was the talk of the Weyr and the Harpers were already working hard on the program for the Feast.

The Harper blinked and turned to look at the sudden commotion coming from the kitchens. It took a few moments for her to process what was happening and she scanned the room again to look for Bo. Her curiosity got the best of her however, and Lena got up and moved over to join the crowd in the kitchen. She'd never seen any kind of hatching before and didn't want to miss it.

The slim girl made her way between people in an attempt to get a better look at the flitts - a few had already made it outside their eggs! As she passed a kitchen worker she was handed some meat and the Harper blinked at the woman, but she had already moved on. A little unsure what she was supposed to do now, she looked around and then held the meat out toward the eggs like the others were doing. The babies were hungry when they finally broke through their eggs - it made sense. She smiled and watched as more eggs hatched, the fact that she was supposed to be meeting with Bo completely forgotten for the moment.
