Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Samus's First Clutch (WEYR EVENT); 18 eggs

Samus had always been quiet and not very troublesome outside of occasionally hiding her master’s valuables about his weyr for fun. But now, heavy with eggs, the golden fire lizard was an absolute pest. No matter how T’ech tried to stop her, his possessions seemed to be vanishing one by one and the warmed pot of sand he’d set up for her in his weyr went completely unnoticed. In fact, Samus had set up shop just outside of the kitchens on a countertop. Her nest consisted of the bronzerider’s stolen clothing and his various valuables.

From this nest, the normally antisocial queen snapped orders at any male fire lizard unfortunate enough to cross her path. She needed to be fed and fawned over while she readied herself for a good long month of taking care of her eggs. And she knew that if she left them even for a second, the greedy weyrfolk would snatch them up. One bronze in particular had been spending afternoons with her as she built her nest. Gaston had disappeared shortly after the mating flight but this plain greeny bronze fire lizard had appeared the moment she’d started to construct her nest. He brought her bits of food he stole from the kitchens and even pieces of jewelry and shiny rocks to decorate with.

And there was another queen nearby, the one that belonged to the friend of her master that occasionally visited her. Samus tolerated her presence but if Hyssop dared to touch her nest she would regret it. It was a relief that she was nowhere in sight when Samus began the long process of laying her eggs. Despite his horrible parenting skills, Gaston had been an ideal and healthy mating partner because her eggs were large and healthy, and there were fully eighteen of them. All in all, it was a pleasing first clutch, and one she’d be guarding jealousy in the weeks to come.

((Sorry the post is so short. Babysitting today. But here be babies! Well…soon at least.))

D’art was many things; friendly and trusting, a genuinely good person for the most part. But if one had to name his biggest vice, it would probably be greed. He never meant any harm really, but anyone who’d known him for any stretch of time would know that he was utterly fascinated with fire lizards. Ever since he was old enough to form coherent thoughts, his mind had been filled with images of himself surrounded by the creatures. He’d never had a family or consistent friends to call his own and the more of the creatures he surrounded himself with, the less alone he felt.

Not that he was alone anymore by any stretch of the word. Sadorth would have been enough for most people, and in many ways he was for D’art. But even the brown liked watching their little family grow, liked watching the efficient way his rider trained their pets until they were less like pests and more like contributing members of a team. A team at their beck and call. So though he monitored D’art to make sure he didn’t take on more hatchlings than he could handle, the brown generally let his rider do as he pleased.

For four weeks now, D’art had been keeping a sharp eye on the clutch near the kitchens. He knew he wasn’t the only one lusting after one of those eggs, but he was probably the most persistant. It was his bronze that kept Samus company on her nest, feeding her and showering her with shiny baubles. Perhaps that would give him an edge in attracting one of her hatchlings to him. An hour or two every night before bed, he sat nearby with one or more of his fire lizards keeping him company and simply watched her.

This evening, his patience would pay off. One moment the kitchen area was quiet, but for the steady murmur of the Mess Hall in the next room over, and then the air was full of bright, humming fire lizards and Samus was reared up and flapping her wings, calling imperiously to them. The creatures seemed drawn to birth of any kind and they’d come from all over the Weyr to witness a hatching. A grin split D’art’s face as he scrambled to his feet and shouted into the kitchens, “The eggs are hatching! The eggs are hatching!”

D'art was definitely not alone in his 'totally eying up the flit eggs' hobby. Taavi considered himself to be quite advanced in that field. Just wait. When the Weyr finally had some sort of sport event, he'd totally take home the gold medal for sheer egg watchery, which was totally a sport. Of course, it helped that he worked in the kitchen anyway. Waiting for bread to finish baking or rising gave him plenty of time to keep an eye on the gold's clutch.

At first, he assumed that there would be problems with Arley's gold; he'd heard that golds didn't get along particularly well, a fact that inspired about a dozen sexist jokes that he had to quell. But, it seemed like the two golden girls got along just fine.

It was just barely dinner and the kitchen was finally winding down when the air suddenly exploded into firelizards. One moment, nothing. Next moment: Firelizards. Thousands of them. Well, dozens, really.

Well, there were a lot of them. Taavi wasn't about to count and muss around with numbers. They were tricky things. One moment you thought that one plus one equaled two and the next moment someone was talking about numbers that weren't really there and were also letters somehow.

... ALSO EGGS. THE EGGS WERE HATCHING OHFARANTH. Once he was done being frazzled, Taavi choked down the rest of the breadroll and went to look at the eggs. His own excitement refused to let him stand still though, so the Candidate was constantly jostling from one foot to the other, always shifting his weight. It was the first time he'd seen a hatching of any sort and the sheer excitement of it was immense.

Zelle had been feeling pretty good the past few days. She was meeting new people and getting to know her fellow candidates. And not to mention she recently heard about a certain gold dragon laying her eggs. Life felt great...up till she had worked so hard she felt sore all over again. She was getting into fantastic shape it seemed but man it felt like it was going to kill her before she made it to the sands sometimes. The tall female candidate had gone into the dining hall to get some food before finally going to her room for the day.

Settling down with a plate of roast herdbeast and some bread to go with it she was just about to dig in when she suddenly noticed firelizards...tons of them! Flying toward one spot which looked like the kitchens. Her curiosity nagged at her but she was still hungry...She inhaled the bread and downed it with some klah and was about to eat the meat too when she heard voice...

Eggs? What eggs...OH SHARDS! That's why the flits were acting up! That little gold flit must have laid her eggs. Wow, she had completely forgotten about the fact she had flown recently. It had been a sight seeing them fly about that time. Looking at her plate she shrugged her shoulders and picked it up to head for where the nest had been made. When she arrived she blinked seeing it had been made of someone's clothing and others little things. Especially socks...lots of socks. Zelle smiled seeing all the flits gathered and at how many eggs there were. "Wow. They are tiny little things aren't they? Beautiful too." She said to D'art and to another fellow there that she instantly recognized. "Hey Taavi! Long time no see."

She looked at the flits flying around and tilted her head seeing three of them that were perched nearby. All huddled together and watching while making a soft humming sound. Those three looked familiar...especially the blue one. Shrugging her shoulders and continued to look at the eggs and the young fellow that seemed especially excited about them.

Between his own bites of roast, X'van offered small morsels to his green firelizard Girl. She was most appreciative, carefully taking each piece and nibbling daintily before licking every last trace off of her paws. When Girl was happy, the brownrider could breathe a little easier. For the most part she was quite pleasant company, but when she was hungry she got annoyed and when she was annoyed then X'van got no peace. She could be rather irritating, really. Having just devoured another bite, Girl's head popped up, gazing off into the distance. She trilled joyously and then hurriedly licked the juice from her forepaws. X'van took the opportunity to shovel more food into his mouth. Girl trilled again and the note levelled out into a pleasant hum. She unfurled her striped wings and rocked back onto her haunches as she gazed toward the kitchens and hummed. It took a moment for her message to sink in, but the brownrider was on his feet in an instant. He had been waiting for this clutch to hatch, hoping to try his luck at gaining a beast that would hopefully be a little less demanding and condescending then Girl. She was worse than his mother.

The brownrider nodded to the drudge who took away his dirty dishes and he wove between the tables toward the kitchen. He hesitated at the door and when Girl bit him on the ear he slid into the room, hoping Arley wouldn't appear from no where brandishing a ladle. Girl hummed happily and sure enough, the eggs were rocking.

Every once in a while, Tosst journeyed to the Weyr kitchens and huddled himself at the table closest to the central fire. When the relative silence of the wher handler's quarters made him restless he would seek out the harmless hubbub of the dining hall at Vaioa and make himself comfortable, feet propped on the bench, a pipe hanging out the side of his mouth. He mostly just chewed on the stem, not caring much for the lingering scent and aftertaste of the tobacco.

He was comfortable and warm, the lulling sounds of conversation washing over him. Human chatter was a comforting thing, when he didn't have to be a part of it. Tosst could feel the gentle tugging of Tossk, who had woken and wondered where his handler had gone. Silently, he reassured his beast, turning his head to observe a few of the kitchens women that seemed to be in a huff about something.

Firelizards were beginning to swarm into the door that separated the dining hall from the kitchens, and Tosst smirked, wondering if someone had put the conglomeration of them up to some mischief. Quickly it became apparent that there were far too many of the creatures for it to be organized, and Tosst debated getting out of his seat to survey what the impending chaos was going to be. The voice of a young man rung out into the now more-or-less quiet hall, putting all of Tosst's curiosities to rest.

A firelizard clutch, then. Deciding that he had nothing better to do, he eased himself up off of his bench, loitering his way over to the increasingly crowded doorway. His height and general aura of filth was more than enough to allow him access to the front lines, and he found himself looking down on an imperious little golden flit, her eggs rocking and shaking amongst what were probably stolen valuables and baubles.

Hmm. Ever since the turn's end gather he'd been thinking about acquiring one of the creatures for himself. May as well make an honest attempt while the opportunity presented itself.

When Soliska had heard about Samus having a clutch she couldn't wait to see T'ech. Though when he had become Weyrleader she backed off and stayed away. Was she scared? Slightly, maybe, she wasn't sure. T'ech was her friend, but now he was also someone that was important. She had no clue how to speak with him, so she left him alone. Pond on the other hand had been one of those males that had been kind enough to bring the little gold some food. He was a good boy and very respectful, even if he made a mess of bumping into things. Luckily the blue fire lizard knew well to be careful around the gold's eggs.

Standing around a corner to the area with Samus in it, she watched for a distance with a bowl of scraps in her hand. Ever day she would come by with Pond checking on the gold from a distance. Of course she made sure to never come around when T'ech was there. This time she would have no way to escape now, the fire lizards were humming the eggs were going to hatch. She had decided a few days ago that she wanted to try and get a new fire lizard. Pond was great, but he was getting old and his flying had gotten worse. She wanted a new friend to join the family, maybe a lizard that was a tad brighter then her little blue.

With a deep breath she walked into the room still holding the bowl in her hand. With a weak smile she looked at T'ech and Samus. "Hello T'ech." Pond gave his own greeting as well, by stealing one of Soliska's scraps and hopping down to give it to the little gold. The blue seemed proud of himself as he dropped the scrap and returned to Soliska's shoulder.

As usual, V'sili kept to himself in the dining hall, eating his dinner quietly off to the side. For a while, Epolith would keep him company, but, of course, the brown was far too large for that now. Chewing contentedly, his eyes drifted across the hall, taking in the familiar sight of the evening crowd. The dining hall was busy, as always.

Not for the first time, V'sili cast a glance towards the kitchens, aware of the tiny gold firelizard hunkered down over her clutch. Word around the Weyr was that her eggs would be hatching soon. That was an exciting thought. V'sili had always liked firelizards, but had never considered impressing one after Epolith came into his life. That brown had taken up all his time. However, Epolith required less attention now; V'sili had the time to raise a firelizard, if he so pleased.

Of course, it all came down to timing. He hadn't even been near the kitchens the last time there was a clutch. Besides, so many people clamored for a hatchling, it was probably nearly impossible for him to snag one. He shoved the rest of his breadroll in his mouth and leaned back, casting another look over towards Samus.

He nearly choked when firelizards began streaming into the hall. He swallowed and stood, trying to get a better view as commotion in the hall rose. A cry rose up, confirming his suspicions - the eggs were hatching. He hurried from his seat to join the accumulating crowd. It wasn't likely that he would gain a firelizard today, but it couldn't hurt to try.

Adult fire lizards flocked to the site of the dirty nest Samus had made from worn laundry. Green, blue, brown, bronze, and even the golds of the Weyr flickered through the crowd, filling the air with a strong hum. The hatching song only intensified as the eggs wobbled more and more forcefully... and without warning, the first one split open, spilling a small and dark body onto the countertop.

Bowls of meat were passed around, rather generous scraps considering their lack of tithes, but the Kitchen had enough in stores to spare the apparent excess. The little lizard struggled to his feet, crowing hungrily as the scent of food reached his nostrils. He ruffled his wings in irritation as he realized the food was far away and would require venturing into an unknown zone. He had not been able to surveil the assembled hopefuls for long with red, whirling eyes before another egg cracked open behind him.

The new firelizard fell out of the fragments of his shell and landed on his feet, immediately spreading his wings. Although he was wet, some shades were visible nevertheless, and they appeared truly striking. He seemed to be dominated by a mixture of pretty true blue near his feet and along his torso, but it deepened into an indigo-based hue along his wings. He seemed to not be aware of the attention, however, for he immediately turned on his brother in castigation.

The brown watched the blue curiously for a moment, seemingly unruffled, before his stomach growled and he was reminded of his mission before this new distraction. Food! Food was the most important. He turned away from the blue and before he could change his mind, seized upon a piece of meat being held out nearby.

The pretty blue was furious at having his rebuke ignored. He squawked loudly in protest, head weaving back and forth, but before he could further vocalize his displeasure, a piece of meat descended from above, attached to a pair of fingers. The little blue was sufficiently distracted and darted forward greedily, locking his jaws onto the scrap.

Meanwhile, the eggs continued to rock in increasing intensity, and the sound of cracking began to fill the air.

"Zelle! Fancy seeing you here!" Taavi said, giving the other Candidate a hug as though they were old friends rather than people who had literally just met each other once. There was nothing lewd about the gesture. It was just something he did. He never seemed to be able to do something without touching someone else, be it a friendly touch to the shoulder or a hug. Or, rarely, a punch.

With one last clap to Zelle's shoulder, Taavi turned his attention back to the clutch. "Yeah, they're delightful. It'll be more delightful when they're all gone, to tell you the truth. The kitchens have been overly crowded lately, what with all the gawkers and the whatnot. Especially the whatnot, I'll tell you. I can't even walk around in here most days without tripping over some whatnot or a whatfor or something."

More people managed to get into the kitchen, each one jostling for a place. Not anyone else he knew, sadly, but that was alright. Everyone was a stranger until you took the trouble to meet them, right? That was just how life worked. Worst case scenario, you'd screw things up and they'd never want to see you again.

But that really was a worst case scenario.

Two of the eggs split open, revealing a boisterous brown and a rather beautiful blue. The latter of which ended up bonding to Zelle. Taavi grinned. "Congrats!" he said, although his attention was already wandering back to the wobbling eggs.
