Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The lower caverns were quiet that evening, the dinner hour having passed and most of the riders and weyrfolk having cleared out to their respective night time chores or beds. The drudges had just finished scrubbing tabletops and sweeping the floors under the supervision of the Headwoman before being ushered away to their beds as well. A few glowbaskets stayed open around the room, giving just enough light to late-night folk to avoid barking shins on benches and tables.

In the corner under one of the open glowbaskets, L'ren sat at a table, thumbing through a stack of hides and notes in his own handwriting. His eyebrows were furrowed and his eyes had dark rings under them, signs of a general lack of sleep of late. The unshaven half of his long black hair fell over one side of his face, and he absentmindedly tangled his fingers into it as he made a few more notations on one hide and pushed it to the side. Flight diagrams, maneuvers, Fall patterns. All copied from the older Records he'd been allowed to study, as well as notes he'd taken after wing practices.

Having no illusions of being a Wingsecond or even -third, L'ren had taken down all these notes to reassure himself, and to fill up his brain so he had no room to consider the other aspects of the coming Fall. Like deaths... injuries... losing one's dragon...

You really should sleep, you know. It doesn't do you any good to worry about this right now. You can't save the Weyr from Thread by studying more, can you? No. We will fly and we will fight. You and I will be safe with each other, as the other riders are with their dragons, the mellow confidence with which Torenith spoke was like a balm to L'ren's soul. Indeed he had been worrying so much for the others in the Weyr. He longed only to help others, but the prospect of the Fall looming in the not-so-distant future made him feel helpless.

L'ren sighed, setting down the hides in a neat stack and running his hands through his hair, scrubbing at his scalp with his fingernails. "You're right. You always are, Torenith." The man smiled distantly, turning his head in the general direction of his weyr, where he knew the brown was laying on his couch, kept awake by his rider's thoughts. "I'll come to bed soon, I promise. I'll just finish this set of notes and you can come down to get me."

Torenith's mental sigh made him chuckle. Humming a quiet tune, he picked up his pen and began writing again.

Ebylin had far too many thoughts running through her head. She had hoped that her late night flight with Harnteth would help clear it at least a little but her thoughts were plagued by certain events coming over the horizon. Raids, Thread, even celebrations. It was...daunting. Harnteth had tried to cheer her up by taking her near the coast again. Her rider really seemed to like it there but this time it didn't work. Ebylin was worried about many things and Harnteth just couldn't understand why. After finally landing near the lower caverns she watched her rider quietly as she climbed off her back. When Ebylin still didn't say anything to her she spoke up in a worried voice. It will be ok Eby. I promise. I won't let anything bad happen to you or anyone else. Her rider seemed startled out of her thoughts by Harnteth's words and came the dragon a small smile.

I'm sorry my heart. I didn't mean to worry you too. I'll try to cheer up ok? Gently patting her sweet green on the snout she kept thinking about what would happen if Thread came and she lost her. Ebylin would rather fly into the heart of Rukbat than lose Harnteth. You will not lose me. I won't go anywhere. The words were followed by a wave of warmth and unconditional love that Ebylin was so used to. The Greenrider quickly wrapped her arms around her dragon's muzzle in a tight hug with a smile before releasing her and turning to head into the lower caverns. Thank you love. I'll be getting me some food from the night hearth alright? You behave. She got a soft rumble in response as she went inside.

Thankfully the cooks left stew and klah out for riders that missed meals otherwise she would have gone to bed starving. After grabbing herself a bowl and a cup she headed into the dining hall where she noticed they had already cleaned the place up for the night. Shrugging she looked around for a table and blinked seeing someone still there. Well that was odd. Since being at Vaioa she was used to coming in at this hour and finding the place practically abandoned. Part of her was tempted to just sit as far from the person as possible and eat in peace. But in the back of her mind she remembered Harnteth's words about being more social. And then the memory of spending time with a certain candidate. Maybe she could be...a little less anti-social tonight.

Letting out a quiet sigh she made her way toward the person and then stopped at a table that was close by and sat her bowl and cup down with soft thuds. Hoping that it would be enough to get this man's attention. A little conversation might even be nice for once while she ate. But unfortunately she didn't have much choice in whether or not he would notice her, Rayne suddenly decided to pop up in that instant and let out a loud hungry chirp. Jumping she groaned and sat down. "A person can't be subtle with you around can they?" ,Rayne just chirped again and landed on the table next to her bowl. Turning to the man she gave a stiff apologetic smile in case they disturbed him. "Sorry. I was trying not to startle you."

[Sorry this took so long! I've had a craaaazy week!]

The thunk of a bowl and a cup hitting wooden tabletop shook L'ren from his writing, and he hastily pulled the pen away from the hide to avoid letting a scrawl muss up his notes. His hair straggled over his face, lending him a bit of a bedraggled appearance. The little flitt's hungry chirp made a slow, easy smile drift onto L'ren's face, and he chuckled.

"A person can't be subtle with you around can they?"

"Sorry. I was trying not to startle you."

L'ren held up his hand reassuringly, then carefully set his pen to one side and brushed his hair from his face.

"Oh no, it's quite alright. Nice to have a little company, it was feeling a little lonely down here tonight anyway."

The pale-skinned young man peered closely at the woman, "I'm afraid I don't know your name, terribly sorry! I've seen you about but haven't had the chance to actually meet you." His easy smile spread into a bright grin as he held out a hand. "I'm L'ren, rider of brown Torenith."

He cocked his head as he waited for her to provide her name, his somewhat diminutive stature causing him to peer up at her a little.

[No prob. ^^ I totally understand.]

Ebylin was noticed the man looked a bit of a mess but then again when you were someone that stayed up so late you tend to get a certain look about you. Usually people avoided you like crazy because of it too. When the man finally raised a reassuring hand and spoke she smirked. Though she wasn't into men she could say there was pretty handsome face behind that hair of his.

"Funny. I was just thinking the same thing. The place is usually deserted when I come in this late." ,see? She can be social and so far Ebylin felt she was doing good. Rayne let out another chirp from the table and made a move for his girl's bowl again. Turning to the blue flit she pointed a finger at him and spoke sternly. "Don't even think about it."

Rayne gave her an annoyed look then flopped onto his stomach with a huff. Chuckling at him she turned back to L'ren with a tilt of her head. Smirking slightly she reached out and took his hand. "It's good to meet you L'ren. I'm Ebylin, rider of green Harnteth." ,she released his hand and moved to sit down so that man didn't have to look up at her so. "And I'm afraid I didn't know your name either. Though I have seen you around as well." ,turning to her flit she waved a hand at him and smiled softly. "And the hungry fellow there is Rayne. His one of three...and I am surprised the other two are not with him."

L'ren's smile softened as she introduced herself and her firelizard, and he tipped a small salute to the flitt with a laugh.

"It is certainly a pleasure to meet you, Ebylin. And you as well, Rayne."

Harnteth? She's a strong green, and a pretty one too...

"Oh stop that, you're shameless."

His eyes came back from the slightly glazed over look that a rider got when speaking with his dragon and he grinned a little sheepishly.

"Ah... Torenith sends his regards as well." Coughing, he changed the subject, stacking up his notes dutifully and peering across at her as she sat down. "What is it that's got you up so late, if I may ask? Me, I'm just going over my notes here. Can't shake the feeling that if I don't, I'll miss something and forget something when... Fall starts."

L'ren sighed and shook his head with a little bit of a self-deprecating smile even as he winked at the woman and her flitt.

Ebylin managed a small smile back at L'ren as he saluted. "Pleasure is all mine." ,The salute to Rayne made the flit look at the man curiously then being spoken too made him lift his head and chirp in return. His owner just smirked at him before being distracted by the distant look on L'ren's face. Probably talking to his dragon. Ebylin assumed the brown was back at the rider's weyr since he wasn't outside when her and Harnteth had landed. Speaking of her green...To bad Torenith is not here. I would have liked the company too.~

She just rolled her eyes at Harnteth's words. You mean you would have liked someone to flirt with while I ate. And what is wrong with that? For a moment Ebylin wanted to groan but held it back quickly. Choosing to ignore her dragon for now and focus on the man talking to her. "And Harnteth sends her regards as well. She is waiting for me outside for now." ,she said looking toward the exit with a smirk. Turning back to L'ren she felt her smirk turn into a neutral expression when he asked why she was up so late. Rubbing her neck she chuckled quietly before responding.

"Actually tonight I just couldn't sleep. Worried about a few things. Thread being one of them." ,she tilted her head with a small smile. "I guess we're all a little on edge about it." It was something she kept forgetting. That she wasn't the only one that worried about things like that. Her fellow riders had the same fears and worries as she did when it came to things that could change their lives. L'ren's wink made her chuckle and Rayne chirped at him and moved to get a little closer to the man. Sniffing at his notes on the table. "Rayne, don't mess with his stuff. You know better."

Why didn't you say so in the first place? I'm coming down... L'ren rubbed a temple at the cheerful mental tone in his dragon's voice, and the two riders would hear the sounds of a larger dragon's wings fanning down for a landing outside, and the warbling vocalizations of greeting from the brown.

Well, I can't sleep till you're done anyway, now can I? You need a ride back up. It will be nice to have someone to talk to while I wait, said Torenith in a that's-that tone that made L'ren chuckle and repeat it to Ebylin, mimicking the dragon's tone of voice.

At her confession, he frowned a little, folding his hands in his lap. L'ren, too, had all but forgotten that the other riders were also worried and it broke his heart to see that genuine nervousness written all over her posture.

"I'm sure we'll all be ready when it comes. Fardles, we've had enough time to think about it, yeah?" He said this all slowly and firmly, as though he were also trying to convince himself. "Our dragons will know what to do, and our training will follow."

Rayne edged closer to his notes, and he grinned at the little blue, carefully putting the cap onto the ink vial and screwing it shut tightly. "It's alright, he can't really ruin anything, the ink's dry."

Reaching over to his mostly empty dinner plate, L'ren picked up the stew bowl and held it out to the firelizard, tilting it so he could see. There were a few bits left in the bottom, and he smiled gently, setting the bowl within a lizard-length of the blue.

Ebylin startled slightly when she heard the sounds of large wings fanning down outside. From the look on L'ren it was probably just his dragon coming down to join Harnteth outside. The thought made her chuckle and sure enough she heard her sweet green let out a return warble of greeting to the brown. Her assumptions were confirmed when L'ren spoke mimicking his dragon. Letting out a small laugh she smirked toward the entrance.

Outside Harnteth crooned at the brown and shifted to give him plenty of room to lay next to her if he wanted. Her eyes swirling shades of blue she spoke in a soft, flirty tone. So glad you could join me Torenith. Its always nice to spend time with such a handsome brown.

"Guess our dragons will be entertained for now. Be prepared for your brown's ego to get stroked." ,she said with a teasing tone. See again? She was even teasing. This wasn't all that bad. Ebylin just needed to relax. The guy wasn't going to turn into a pile of thread and eat you. So chill. When he frowned at her words and spoke she took a deep breath before releasing it slowly and smirking awkwardly. "I'm sure you're right. But even so...I still worry. If not for myself then for the Weyr if we're NOT ready."

She had no reason to care that much about this place since she had only recently come to call it home. But somehow it had gotten under her skin and now she felt she could protect the place from any threat if she had to. Even Harnteth was slowly coming to love the place. If only because she had started forgetting how much she had liked her old home.

Watching Rayne carefully she bit her lip and looked to L'ren when he spoke. "Still, he knows better than to mess with things that are not his. Not that he listens any. I still find objects in my room that he took from people." ,she said the words looking at the little blue who just looked back at her with an innocent appearance. When L'ren suddenly got his bowl and showed Rayne the contents before setting it down Ebylin raised a brow curiously. Rayne was now looking between her and the bowl and she let out another small laugh. "Go on you. You can have it."

He didn't need to be told twice. Rayne was on that stew like white on rice. Dipping his nose into it and immediately slurping and gobbling the contents with gusto. Ebylin watched with amusement as the stew was quickly starting to disappear. "I didn't realize he was THAT hungry. Silly thing usually eats whatever he finds while I'm away."

Torenith scooted his bulk into the space Harnteth made for him, and his eyes whirled happily at her flattering words and crooning. He flipped his wings to his back and puffed out his chest a little, arching his neck handsomely. L'ren groaned and covered his eyes with a hand, grinning and shaking his head.

"Oh dear, I'll be hearing about this for a week!" the man's voice shook with laughter.

You're just jealous that I get all the female's attentions! Torenith teased, knowing his rider didn't allow himself time for flirtations with the women of the Weyr. Thank you, Harnteth. The slim brown's voice was full of male flirtation.

"Well, that'll keep them busy anyhow," he said as he stacked his papers, hands shaking a little with nervousness he couldn't quite keep in check. "I often worry, too. All the studying in the world might not prepare us for... this! But at the end of the day I suppose we just have to put our trust in our dragons and in each other."

His strong, if small, hand reached out to pat her gently on the shoulder and his smile and soft brown eyes held genuine kindness, without the underlying lustful hunger many brownriders would hold for the average green rider. No wonder the rumors about L'ren were that he had no drive at all beyond his dragon's flightlust.

L'ren grinned at Rayne's hungry slurpings, and broke off a now-stale crust of bread, tossing it across the kitchen for the flitt to chase. He watched the little blue abesentmindedly, sighing and shrugging, "At any rate, it's nice to know I'm not the only one worried, if that makes any sense. Sometimes I wonder if we're all a little too cocky!" He grinned and shook his head, turning his gaze back to her. "If ever you get too worried, and have no one to talk to, just ask Harnteth to give Torenith a bother. I like having company like this in these uneasy hours of the night."

Harnteth crooned softly at the brown as he puffed himself up and arched his neck. Indeed stroking his ego. She had gotten pretty good at it over the years. Ebylin was trying not to roll her eyes at her dragon who was already enjoying herself. You're welcome Torenith. You must be working hard, you look so strong. Your wing must be proud to have you. Oh yes, she was laying it on thick. Which made Ebylin groan under her breath.

Looking to L'ren as he spoke she chuckled and nodded. "Yes I'm sure it'll keep them busy. I apologize ahead of time for if your brown becomes insufferable after this," She said with an amused smirk. Watching his hands shake she calmed down and smiled slightly. "So long as we all work together I'm sure we'll make it. I know that Harnteth would never let me down." She suddenly felt Harnteth's warm thoughts touch her from her words and it helped her relax even more.

When he patted her shoulder she flinched on reflex but settled down quickly. Giving him a small smirk and realized she could probably be friends with a guy like him. Most men got on her nerves and she distrusted them on sight. But so far L'ren proved to be decent company.

Turning to watch Rayne as he slurped up the stew she chuckled and then watched as L'ren tossed a piece of bread across the empty room. Rayne looked up with a snap and took off like a shot to get it. Chirping excitedly all the while. It made tickled Ebylin how hungry Rayne was acting. Her brow raised hearing L'ren's words but she smirked realizing what he was saying. "Yeah, I know what you mean. Some of us do seem to be a little too...full of ourselves. I just hope that they are able to do their duty when the time comes," Her smirk turned to a faint smile at his offer and she nodded her head as Rayne returned with his prize and landed proudly before munching down. "Thank you L'ren. The same to you if you ever...need someone to talk to alright?"

She could do that right? Try to be a friend to someone again? Yeah...she could do that. Besides, L'ren was a nice guy so far. What could it hurt?

((I'm really sorry this was so late. Bouts of depression and lack of inspiration can really get you. ^^'))
