Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Firyn followed the taller Candidate down the hall a few paces behind, wondering how lucky they would be. It had to be one of these closer rooms. As the other opened the door to the room on the left the redhead began looking for a second glowbasket so that he might check the room next door. Corusek’s voice stopped him though, and for the first time Firyn caught onto the nervous aura around his companion.

“Sure…you start on one end I‘ll start at the other.“ He replied in a flat tone, not really understanding the hesitance but for once not thinking much of it. He came back and moved the glowbasket to sit at the hinge of the door to allow a little more light in before stepping into the room. He wouldn’t pry into Corusek's worries, and focused instead on finding any scent of garlic. Poking around a few shelves gave him no hint, but there were a few sacs hanging off the ends of some of them. Firyn knew that his mother had stored bulbs and roots in a similar fashion, so he started looking in the ones closest to the door.

Unfortunately luck was not with him and one of the higher, heavier bags somehow dislodged from the peg it was hanging on. Reflexes apparently were not on his side either, because he reached to catch the thing automatically and felt the bite of wood in his left hand where he was gripping the shelf support. How the combined weight of the swinging bag and his own body managed to kick the door shut…

“Jays!” Firyn practically shouted into the suddenly dark room, mostly due to the ridiculous situation. “Corusek, sorry…one second let me get the door...” Faranth he was not usually a klutz at all. His hand was throbbing and he had to wonder if he had multiple splinters in his palm. Coursek would probably get a laugh out of this considering they had just been talking about being prepared for any injury.

Corusek cautiously stepped into the illuminated part of the room, glancing around a little nervously at the dark. He stood close to Firyn as he entered the room, cautiously looking around at the pots on the other side. He inched his way nervously towards the darkness, trying not to panic. He reached out and grabbed a pot, shuddering at the darkness behind it. He took a deep breath, and opened the jar, frowning at its emptiness. He closed it and put it back up, just as he heard a crash from behind him.

'Firyn, are you alr-" It went dark. The room. It was pitch black now. The words stuck in Corusek's throat. He trembled, and gasped for breath for a moment. The darkness was closing in on him, it's cold wet hands were wrapping around his body. He tried to make a sound, he tried to scream, but the dark stopped him. He was going to die…

A voice! There was a voice! Oh thank Faranth! Corusek threw himself at the sound, latching onto the warm body. He trembled in fear against whoever it was, closing his eyes tightly. "get me out get me out get me out get me out I can’t breathe get me out." he muttered, his terror showing clearly in his voice.

Firyn had been expecting a chuckle or maybe a shout of slight surprise when the room went dark. It was disorientating and he was having a hard time finding the latch for the heavy door. He was fairly certain that the darn thing was literally right behind him and to the left a bit, but he wasn't sure at what height it was at. Only using his right hand made it more difficult and ridiculous at the same time. Apparently he should not be allowed to take simple inventories anymore. Corusek had gone surprisingly silent though, and the redhead attempted to peer in the direction of where the other Candidate had been.

His eyes only caught a darker area moving quickly before he was pushed back against the door from the weight of the taller man. They at least didn't fall but Firyn stiffened at the sudden contact, hissing in pain when his left palm hit the door on reflex to catch himself. It took a second for him to comprehend what Corusek was saying. Annoyance was washed away at the sound of his companion's voice.

“Did something happen....are you scared of the dark?” A stupid question. But he couldn't move with his arms pinned to his sides let alone find the sharding latch.

Not trying to disentangle himself just yet he settled for trying to figure out where Corusek's face was, voice changing to a soft comforting one. “It's all right the door's right behind us. Just breath like I am...but I can't find the handle without using my arms.” He kicked the door with his heel for emphasis, finding Corusek's shoulder and attempting to loosen the Candidate's grip. “Could you let go a bit?” Firyn was trying not to think of how awkward this was.

((I'm SO sorry this took so long Sage!))

Corusek clenched his eyes tightly against the darkness, happy to have something warm to hold onto, but even that warmth wasn't enough to calm him down. His breath still came with difficulty. His mind was filled with images of rushing water, and chocking coldness. He pressed his face into the other warm body, feeling slightly better. "Please. get me out. Into the light into the light into the light into the light. please." He whimpered, holding the body closer.

His mind barely registered the words that Firyn was saying, but they held some importance. Dark… yeas, that was a frightening thing. "d…door?" He turned his head toward the hand that placed itself on his shoulder. He whimpered gently as he slowly loosened his grip. "Don’t leave me." He said quietly, hoping Firyn wasn't like his brothers. His hands griped the boy's clothing tightly around the waist instead, shaking like a leaf. "Hurry… get me out, please!"

The dark haired lad felt a tear run down his cheek from the terror, wanting nothing more than to be free of this horrible inky blackness. He couldn't think of anything that was more terrifying then this moment right now. "Just… please. tell me when it's light again… please…"

Firyn stiffened again when the other Candidate pressed his face into his chest. If he had not been preoccupied with the pain in his hand he would have shoved the other boy off no matter how bad he felt. 'Scared' didn't seem to cover Corusek's fear at the moment...terrified was more accurate. The fact that the redhead was actually also trying not to blush was not helping. Ridiculous. He pushed insistently at Corusek's shoulder, not wanting to have to be forceful but seriously considering it.

Thankfully his words yielded some results, and he let out a breath he hadn't known he had been holding when there was suddenly a little more space between them. Corusek's nervousness when they had first approached the room made a lot more sense now, and Firyn had dealt with scared children enough via his younger siblings to understand irrational fear.

“Of course I'm not going to leave you in here. Healer, remember?” He chided, voice still dry. He pried Corusek's right hand free of his shirt and gripped his wrist, turning to use the fingertips of his left hand to quickly and finally find the latch. Moving over to the side and tugging the other man over with him he yanked the door open. Light spilled into the opening, leaving the two standing in an illuminated triangle.

“There we go.” Firyn stated, still holding the other's wrist. “You can open your eyes.” He had to stop himself from questioning whether or not Corusek had walked to the Weyr. A reaction like that wouldn't work well Between. Indifference was a skill he had though. Instead he raised his left hand and waved it in front of him as a distraction, frowning when he counted two slivers of wood.

“I won't say a word about this if you'll help me now.” One of the pieces was embedded in the skin fairly deep, and Firyn knew he'd have a hard time pulling it out with his right hand.

Had Corus not been petrified by the darkness,he may have noticed the other healer's discomfort, however at the moment other things were distracting him. He honestly could not tell why the darkness frightened him so but it did, simple as that. He felt the hand on his shoulder and turned his head towards it gently, loosening his grip a little in the process. Like a scared child, Corus nodded as Firyn reminded him of his status as a healer.

The terrified youth felt the other moving, when suddenly he felt his hand be pried free from the shirt. He was about to protest and panic, but not after feeling his wrist be gripped so. He gasped a little at the feeling, when suddenly from behind his eyelids,he could see that wondrous faint red tinge. There was light now.

Corus opened his eyes, and practically threw himself into the hall way slumping against the wall opposite, and curling up. His breathing was slowly returning to normal, however he was still a lovely shade of white and covered in a cold sweat. He looked up at Firyn, slowly rising to his feet as he did.

He walked back over to the boy, his inner healer curious and willing to help more then his inner child wanted to hide. "What is it you need assistance with?" He said walking over to the red head, his gaze as far away from the closet as it possibly could be. He didnt need any reminders of his fear right now. "Your hand is it? Let me see."

Firyn stared for a second when Corusek flung himself into the much brighter hallway, the hand that had held his wrist slowly moving to hang at his side. The redhead even crossed his arms disapprovingly. It was odd for him to see someone lose their cool so easily and he again had to force himself to not be too harsh and blurt out something that he would regret saying. The Candidate wiped the annoyed look off his face when Corusek finally looked up again. Firyn let out a heavy sigh, not moving from the triangle of light but glad to see that at least the other was not terrified to come closer to the room again.

“Over here.” He said shortly, moving right back to the other side of the hall. He slid to the ground with a huff before holding out his left palm. “Someone should do something about some of those shelves apparently.” He muttered, trying not to sigh as he looked at the two splinters again.

Obviously he did not fancy the idea of having his hand cut open so close to the Hatching; especially his left. “I'm left-handed.” Firyn added as an afterthought so he didn't appear incompetent.

Corusek ignored the dark room behind him, wishing Firyn would just walk out into the light and shut the door, so he wouldn't have to deal with that horrible darkness ever again. He shuddered a little, feeling a chill along his spine as he put his back to the darkness. "Your left hand, alright." He said in his cold voice, the wall in his mind was slowly reforming. The act of healing certainly helped it. He looked at the splinters, there were large ones, but nothing overly serious. The angle of entry made them miss anything vital, the only trick would be pulling them out. It was times like this that Corusek was grateful he always travelled with a small medical kit. Now, did he have a pair of forceps on him?

He opened the pouch and began rummaging through it, hoping he had packed a pair of tools. Gauze, that would be useful, numbweed would serve a purpose soon. A small glimmer in the bag caught Corusek's attention. He extracted a small pair of forceps, minuscule, but enough to grab a hold of slivers and grit from cuts. He looked back at Firyn and gingerly took his hand, not wanting to cause any motion in the palm, which may cause more discomfort then was necessary. "I will pull the largest one out now, please hold still." He said gripping the tip of the splinter, carefully pulling it out slowly so as not to tear it. "Left handed? I see." He said, his voice calm and unwavering, as he normally was. "I appreciate you're offer to keep my loss of... control between us." He added, trying to make conversation to keep his patient's mind off the procedure.
