Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Well this was unfortunate.

Firyn stared at the entrance to the storage room with a slight frown of contempt. A clear slip of his usual emotionless face, but he felt it was warranted. He’d been asked to take inventory of several items in the lower caverns’ storage areas by one of the Journeyman Healers and had been counting stacks of complete bandages. It wasn’t that the infirmary itself was low or anything but he could understand that it was always good to know how much was available for general use. It made sense that a lot of people in the Weyr wouldn’t run to the Healers for every little bleeding scratch. It would be impractical and in general people were not helpless in dealing with small injuries.

What he did not understand was why on Pern a weyrbrat had run into the room, grabbed a stack of the bandages that he had literally just finished counting, and ran back out. He’d had his back turned and hadn’t gotten a good look at the child and knew all too well that there was no point in trying to chase him through corridors.

Running a hand through his hair Firyn looked at the offending stacked bandages once more. He’d also been told to bring back quite a bit of garlic for the predicted onset of colds as the weather changed more. The herbs were stored in a different room though and now he was going to be taking twice as long to get back in order to give an accurate count of things. So he started counting. Again. Hopefully no one would think he was slacking off for taking so long. When he had been assigned infirmary chores he’d considered himself very lucky and did not want to give anyone a bad impression.

Corusek walked down the carved stone hallways of the weyr towards the lower caverns as he was instructed. He always wondered how long it took to carve everything out from the stone. What secrets did each chip hold? Where did those scratches come from he wondered. He shook his head quickly and hurried along. Now was not a good time to get distracted. The healers had given him a task, one he wasn't so keen about, but he would do as asked. It seems they sent someone else, presumably another candidate, to go and count supplies in the lower cavern storage room, and he hadn’t returned for a while. Corusek didn’t really mind that he was being asked to go check on someone and help them, but he wished he didn’t have to leave the infirmary to do so.

As the storage rooms loomed closer, Corusek slowed his pace, wanting to see what the person was up to before bursting in on them, in case it was something… personal. He tiptoed up to the room and knocked on the open door gently. "Hello, are you the one the Infirmary staff sent to count supplies? I'm Corusek, they sent me to assist you." He said, seeing that the counter, a young man maybe around his age, was doing just that. Counting. He stepped into the room and waited by the door. He didn’t want to intrude too far, as he had no idea what was counted and what was not.

Firyn was in the process of reaching behind one stack of bandages to count those that had somehow been shoved behind them when someone knocked on the door. He’d resorted to keeping track of what he found on each shelf and remembering the individual groups. If someone else happened to decide they desperately needed to run in and take some he’d at least not have to start over. Which would be ridiculous and of course not actually happen again, but he was a cautious person.

He would have completely ignored the knock until he was done with the present group of supplies, but the fact that the other young man had been sent to help him meant he should stop and be polite. When he turned he was surprised to recognize the Candidate as the one that had assisted the…beat up…fellow at the egg touching. He did not need assistance. But if this other Candidate had Healer training like he thought at least he would know what they were doing. Running his hand through his hair again he offered Corusek a smile.

“That’s me. If you’ve got some other task too you don’t have to help me. Someone came in and took some of the bandages I was counting and I have no idea how many.” He shrugged. “I’m Firyn. I remember you from the other day. Are you an Apprentice Healer too by any chance? I noticed you had some things with you when Indith taught that other Candidate respect.”

Corusek looked the red haired man up and down quickly, his stare just as blank as usual. He seemed familiar, but Corusek couldn't say why. The red head must have been a year or two older than him, judging by his looks. Perhaps it was in the infirmary he say him. No, that didn’t seem right. Corusek brushed his hair of his face and looked at the man. He couldn’t help but smile back as the other man did so as well. He held up a hand gently at the mention of other tasks. "No, no I don't have any other duties to attend to. That's why they sent me, so I do not mind." His smile faded quickly at the mention of someone taking supplies.

"Firyn? Nice to meet you." He said with a curt nod. He looked up quickly as the other man mentioned seeing him before. The only sign that Corusek was shocked at the recollection was the slight tremble of one hand. He hadn't seen him though! But that didn’t surprise him, actually. He needed to learn to stop getting so lost in his thoughts. "Yes, I do have training has a healer." He lifted his shirt up slightly to reveal the pouch on his belt. "I never go anywhere without a small amount of numbweed and bandages. You never know when someone will become injured and you're preparation for such an even can be the difference between life and death."

At the sight of Corusek’s frown Firyn raised a hand in turn and waved off the topic of whatever child had taken the bandages. Even if it wasn’t for an injury that some other weyrbrat had managed to get he didn’t think it was anything to worry over. Memories of his siblings made him dismiss it as simple mischief. If it had been herbs or something else then he may have tried to follow but it wasn’t his business to worry about it.

“Sorry I don’t remember you from the Hall, but having that pouch is a good idea.“ He hadn’t met another Candidate with a Healing background before now. It was even better that Corusek looked to be around his own age. Firyn was certain that for a little while he had been the oldest male Candidate at the Weyr.

“Well sorry for pulling you away from whatever you’d been assigned to first. This isn’t the most exciting thing…I’m betting you’re like me and would much rather be in the infirmary observing and helping there.” He took a second to add up the supplies he’d counted for a grand total so far and pointed to the other side of the room before turning to go back to the stack at the back of the shelf. “I think there’s a few more bandages over there, otherwise I’m just about done. We need to get garlic too, but I actually don‘t know what room they‘re in down this hall.”

His frown faded back into his blank expression as Firyn waved his hand nonchalantly. If the other candidate didn't seem to concerned, then there must have been a good reason. Corusek took a mental note of this and approached one of the shelves, looking over the supplies that were stacked there. "the hall? I'm sorry, I never went to one. I was trained by our cothold's healer. She was an excellent teacher, and encouraged me to come here when I was searched." he said, feeling a bit of back story might be appropriate. He left out the parts where he refused to go to the wyer at first, simply because it didn't matter to anyone.

"I wasn't pulled away from any other task, don't worry. You are right however, I would rather be on the front lines, observing, but these tasks are important in the long run, no matter how meaningless they seem." he said walking over to the pile Firyn pointed at. He quickly began to count them, slipping into that state of extreme focus, barely hearing anything Firyn said. "garlic... Alright, that's our next goal." he said, in a distant sort of way. Twenty stacks of three, they were small however, suitable for small children, or surface wounds. "Sixty small bandages."

If he’d been a more emotional person Firyn might have laughed at how similar their backgrounds were. Next Corusek would be saying that he had never really thought of himself as a Dragonrider until actually presented with the idea upon being Searched. The redhead instead smirked again as the other man turned away from him. The boring task he’d been given didn’t seem too terrible anymore. Unless they were going to have to search every room for garlic.

“I started off training in a similar way.” He offered, willing to talk about his past a bit if the other was. “My father was a Journeyman Healer and had met my mother at our cothold. When I started following him around while he worked he was happy to teach me. If I don‘t Impress I‘ll be just as content to stay at the Weyr as a Healer.” He looked around a bit while Corusek counted, making notes of what other supplies were in this particular room. Knowing the Weyr layout was one thing; knowing the layout of the caverns was another. Things probably moved around whenever the Headwoman had a cleaning spree.

Nodding, he added up the total again with the room’s contents all accounted for. There were more of the larger sets than smaller bandages but that made sense in a Weyr.

“Do you have any idea where the garlic would be? I haven’t been down here much.” Firyn asked after he had done the calculation. Maybe the other Candidate had been in the required room before. Firyn should have asked when he had still been in the infirmary. Too late for that though.

Corusek looked up at the red-haired man as he finished another pile, this one only had only fifty three bandages, and was one of the last few in the room. So he too trained from a young age, huh? It was nice to know someone else thought the same way as Corusek, not being overly concerned with riding dragons, and content with serving as a healer. "I agree with you. Healing is as noble and important a task as dragon-riding. I ever gave much thought to flying, until I was searched actually." He said returning to where the red head stood. "the last pile has only fifty three, medium sized."

He looked around the room quickly, then peeked out into the hall. There was no clear indication as to where the garlic might be. "Unfortunately, I have not been here very long myself, this is my second time being down here, the first time was part of my welcome tour." he said, noticing with a small chill that the hallway was rather dark at the far end. "Perhaps it would be best to search the other rooms, I am sure we will smell the garlic."

Firyn nodded, liking Corusek already. He seemed like someone he could get along with easily. “The Weyr is much more interesting than a small cothold though, I admit. We’re lucky to be here and have the two opportunities.” Of course he wanted to Impress. He was very comfortable with having a good back-up plan of sorts though.

Remembering their flying lesson a few sevendays before brought a small smile to his face. He did love the feeling of flying, but he would not consider himself a failure if a dragon didn’t find him suitable. The Candidate shook his head slightly and repeated the final number of different bandages in his head a few times so he would remember it later. He really should stop thinking about the odds at the upcoming Hatching. He knew there was no point in thinking about it but knew just as well that he was only going to more and more.

Corusek went to the door and he followed, wondering if they would be lucky enough to run into a drudge or worker who might know where the garlic stock was kept. It was the wrong time of day for anyone to be poking about the food stores though.

“We can move glows around if any in the rooms are out.” He suggested, taking a step around the other Candidate to stand in the hallway. “I can’t believe I didn’t ask in the first place. Hopefully we will be able to smell them like you said. So…I guess pick a room.”

The black haired boy looked at the red-head and nodded. " the weyr's structured approach to life is far more compelling then the free for all the cothold was. I am glad to be here." he said with a gentle smile. He looked back out into the darkness, shuddering a little at the darkness. At least he wasn't alone, and it wasn't all that dark, he could still see the outlines of walls and objects. He picked up a basket of glows, and made sure they were glowing as bright as they could.

"alright, well, let's try the one on the left." he said walking over to the door, setting the basket down. He pulled the heavy door open, struggling for a moment with it before it gave in. The light poured into the room, illuminating a wedge of light. corusek shuddered and took an involuntary step back. "uh... Did you want to look first? My nose has been a bit plugged lately."
